God Had
His Hand on me By Josef R. Watts
On May 7, 1984, the doctor’s told the Family of Josef & Joi Watts, a Fraternal set of Twins, that were born prematurely, that there was no sense of attaching oneself to the twin Boy, for he is not expected to live…… But…. “God Had His Hand On Me” I was raised by a Praying Church going, Loving and Funny Family. My Two Sisters (Joi & Mufyn) and I were Raised in the Church (Tangelo Baptist Church), In which we went every Sunday for Sunday School and Service. And Grandma made it clear that we were “Born” to attend Church. But as I got older I strayed away, and eventually started getting into trouble. Like most Intelligent young Brothers, I had no problem with grades and school work, I just got Bored because I finished before everybody and that’s when the trouble started, which in turn affected my grades, because I was always suspended or in Juvenile Detention Facilities, due to me also breaking the law several times as an adolescent. Growing up, I also learned I loved Music. All Types of music which in turn led me to writing songs, and I performed my first Rap Song…..In Church! But that was a one time thing, and I eventually started writing wordly on secular songs, that were nothing but words of destruction and confusion. Because I was confused, but I knew I had Talent, I was just using it in the wrong way. I then at 19yrs. Old, got sentenced to 5-months in prison and was right back in society worser than I was before, and 3-weeks after my release I was right back in the county Jail, facing a Life Sentence. And that’s when I decided to Pray under one condition- That God get me out of this mess. But we all know God is not a conditional God, to my Situational Spirituality. I was Praying, Fasting, going to church service and all to no Avail…..I lost Trial and was sentenced to Life in Prison…But “God Still Had His Hand On Me” My first 5-years in prison were filled with anger at 4

God, Pain, Bitterness, Resentment & Loneliness, but Most of all Guilt. Spiritual Guilt, a conviction that it’s not over, if only I surrender, and It took 5-years for me to surrender and stop running. In Prison I was known as being “Real and “Solid”. And I fell into a Friendship with a Brother, that was known as being the same, but the only difference between Him and I was he went to Bible Study at night in the dorm and I didn’t. In Prison it’s all about Image and I didn’t want anyone to think I was “ Soft” by going to Bible Study, but here it is a Brother was going and nobody thought of him as “Soft” and that amazed me. Now around this same time, my Family Relationship was Strained because me being in prison took a toll on my whole Family, and all my Mother could and would say when I called was to “GIVE EVERYTHING TO JESUS”! but I still refused due to my Stubborness and denial that God Still Cared About me and….. “God Still Had His Hand On Me” The Brother I Spoke about earlier, eventually got released and Introduced me to a young Woman by the name of “LATOYA GRACE” and we started a Correspondance that eventually led us to falling in Love. But one of the very first things she told me , was that she had Faith, and the only way for me to come home is to “GIVE EVERYTHING TO JESUS”….. We got Engaged in June of 09’ and June 2nd, 2009, I Dedicated my Life to Christ and Started a Blessfilled and wonderful Spiritual Journey. Not saying there weren’t Bad Times, because there most certainly were, but because I held onto my Faith and Stayed Strong I have been more than a Conquerer. I am Currently in the Appeals process of my case, in which the Courts said I wasn’t able to start the process, but then God Stepped in and Showed out, and I am now Awaiting a Decision as to my Release. But I am still in the Potters House and Jesus is Molding me inti the Man of God He needs me to be in order to start a Family, and start a Street Ministry (Full Force Ministries) and Continuing to write Raps that Glorify, Edify &
Magnified The Lord. God Has His Hand On Me..Until I “Jumped” into His Hands and Now I AM Resting in the Promises of GOD. He Promised Me DELIVERANCE, IF ONLY I WOULD “GIVE EVERYTHING TO JESUS” AND I DID, and my Appointment with my Miracle is Right Around The Corner!!!

Character of a Champion
C
omposure and execution, two critical components in any pressurized, challenging situation, make up the character of a champion. The only senior to play throughout the season with the Dr. Phillips girls basketball team, Tanisha Wilson, is celebrating with her entire school as the Lady Panthers claim the Class 6A girls state title during the 2011 Championship Tournament at the Lakeland Center, making it the school’s first state title since 1992. The game’s MVP, Tanisha Wilson, snatched the rebound in the final seconds of the overtime game against Lake Mary, only to have the ball stripped away; and seconds later, picked up by her teammate, giving the championship title to Coach Anthony Jones and the Lady Panthers. As we congratulate Coach Jones and the Lady Panthers, MVP Tanisha Wilson steps aside from the business of basketball to invite GospelNow into her championship experience.
You were the team’s only senior to play throughout the season. What was that like? Being the only senior was exciting and fun. It allowed me to be a big sister to my teammates and display my leadership skills. Let’s rewind a bit, before we talk about the championship game. Where did the skill and love for basketball come from? I would have to say I gained the skills and love for basketball when I was younger. My aunt Lillian played and from watching her, it inspired me to play. Once she found out I was interested in the sport, she taught me what she knew. Did you start playing as a freshman, and was that the follow up to a middle school basketball career? I began playing basketball at the age of five or six, and never stopped playing once I learned the game. I played YMCA ball under our very own Darrell Carter, Jr. Magic, 3 years at Southwest Middle School, AAU, and I played on the Freshman & JV team as a (freshman) and Varsity as a sophomore through my senior year at Dr. Phillips. Do you have any ambitions to continue playing in college? Where will you attend college? 12
www .G ospel Now. Net
I am attending the University of South Florida this summer, but I will not be participating in any sports. At this time in my life, I just want to focus on my Academic goals and maybe in a few years I will be playing again, but only God knows. You were the team’s captain for how long? What attributes did you find necessary in order to lead the Lady Panthers? Is leading your peers difficult? I was only granted the title of captain for the State semi-final game and State Championship game. I did not allow not having the title of captain all season to stop me from being the leader that I am. My mother and grandmother always taught me, “having a title doesn't define you, you define the title.” I took what was instilled in me and continued to talk on the court by directing my teammates on offense and defense, being a positive influence, and reminding them to be great student-athletes on and off the court. Leading my peers was not hard for me because I showed them respect and gained respect in return. What did you say or what methods did you employ to keep the team motivated and focused? To keep my team focused and motivated, I would always remind them that our team goal was to get back to State
and play in the Championship game; as well as quote our assistant coach Soko "Let's do this thing!" Now that the title belongs to the Dr. Phillips Lady Panthers, what would you say was the key to capturing the state title? First, I would have to say God, because without him we wouldn't have been able to reach our goal. Secondly, I would have to say listening to the coaching staff, playing great defense, staying disciplined and most of all, working together as a team and not allowing egos to get in the way. You were also named the game’s MVP. How did you capture that title? Working hard in practice, always giving 110%, and playing great defense gave me the opportunity of earning the MVP title. What does all of this mean for you and your family? For me, this means a lot because I am the first senior on the Varsity girl’s basketball team at Dr. Phillips to help accomplish a state title since 1992. Knowing this gives me a sense of pride that I will have for the rest of my life. This means a lot to my family because they were able to share in my success. They have always encouraged me to never give up, stay focused and remain humble, knowing that God will exalt me in due time. They now know that all of their sacrifices of finances, time and encouragement have paid off. If you had to play the championship game all over again, is there anything you would do differently? If I had the opportunity to play in the championship game again, I would play harder by boxing out more, rebounding more and being more offensive-minded on the court. Do you consider yourself to be a champion? Yes I consider myself a champion because I was created to be a champion. God has favored me and afforded me opportunities to overcome and accomplish many things in my young life. You’ll be graduating this year, leaving your teammates behind. What advice would you give to them and other aspiring champions? First, listen to the advice someone is giving you because you don't know everything. Second, KNOW that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13), and put God first in everything you do. Lastly, remember “Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the ME for the WE." (Head Coach Phil Jackson, L.A. Lakers)

HEART DISEASE
L
THE SILENT KILLER
ike any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients that are carried to it by the blood in the coronary arteries. When the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged and cannot supply enough blood to the heart, the result is Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). If not enough oxygen-carrying blood reaches the heart, the heart may respond with a pain called angina. The pain is usually felt in the chest or sometimes in the left arm and shoulder. (However, the same inadequate blood supply may cause no symptoms, a condition called silent angina.) When the blood supply is cut of completely, the result is a heart attack. The part of the heart that does not receive oxygen begins to die, and some of the heart muscle may be permanently damaged. CHD is caused by a thickening of the inside walls of the coronary arteries. This thickening, called atherosclerosis narrows the space through which blood can flow, decreasing and sometimes completely cutting off the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the heart. Atherosclerosis usually occurs when a person has high levels of cholesterol, a fatlike substance, in the blood. Cholesterol and fat, circulating in the blood, build up on the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries and can slow or block the flow of blood. When the level of cholesterol in the blood is high, there is a greater chance that it will be deposited onto the artery walls. This process begins in most people during childhood and the teenage years, and worsens as they get older. In addition to high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking also contribute to CHD. On the average, each of these doubles your chance of developing heart disease. Therefore, a person who has all three risk factors is eight time more likely to develop heart disease than someone who has none. Obesity and physical inactivity are other factors that can lead to CHD. Overweight increases the likelihood of developing high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, and physical inactivity increases the risk of heart attack. Regular exercise, good nutrition, and smoking cessation are key to controlling the risk factors for CHD. Research on coronary heart disease (CHD) has contributed to the decline in cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality that has occurred during the
past three decades in the United States. However, life expectancy and rates of illness and death from CHD have not improved as much for blacks as for whites. Blacks have not experienced the full benefit of research advancements for a variety of reasons, including insufficient scientific data, lack of research focused on minority populations, and limited access to health care resources and technology. Consistent and universally accepted racial and ethnic categories have not been established, and definitions may vary according to the social and scientific context. The limited data base currently available leaves a number of paradoxes unresolved. Controversy remains, in particular, regarding both chest pain and sudden death. Available data indicate that the probability of dying from CHD is greater in black Americans than in white Americans and that there is a higher prevalence of smoking, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in blacks. Blacks are also less likely to receive coronary angiography or coronary revascularization. Although major advances in therapy for CHD have occurred in recent years, few data are available on the clinical value, effectiveness, and efficacy of newer therapeutic modalities in blacks. Innovative therapeutic approaches to CHD have been based on data obtained primarily in white male populations. Blacks, especially women, are at greater CHD risk. Therapeutic algorithms focused primarily on the relief of chest pain have been refined in majority populations, but other algorithms may be more efficacious in populations with higher prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and differing clinical presentations. Although information regarding the interactions of LVH, hypertension, and CHD has increased, there are few data in blacks.

Hebni Nutrition Consultants, Inc.
FOCUSED ON IMPROVING THE HEALTH OF THE COMMUNITY!
he American Diabetes Association estimates that as many as one in three Americans could have Type 2 diabetes by 2050, according to an analysis released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2010. Hebni Nutrition Consultants, Inc. (Hebni) is a community-based, not-for-profit agency formed by a group of registered dietitians in 1995 to educate high-risk, culturally diverse populations, and provide nutrition education and strategies to help prevent diabetes, obesity, heart disease and hypertension. Hebni is committed to improving the health of the community we serve for people living with diet-related diseases in Central Florida.
WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL FOR HEBNI NUTRITION CONSULTANTS?
T
he main goal is to fulfill the mission and vision statement, which is to provide nutrition, education and strategies for people that are at risk for obesity, heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. Hebni’s goals are to facilitate the prevention of nutrition-related disease through appropriate nutrition intervention, and to foster dietary compliance for people with existing diseases.
HOW HAS HEBNI NUTRITION CONSULTANTS BEEN BENEFICIAL TO THE COMMUNITY?
H
ebni is on the cutting edge of providing nutrition services to the community. Roniece Weaver and her team have developed a state-of-the-art Nutrition Resource Center. Their goal is to provide an easier way to deliver nutrition messages to the community. Taking the FUBU approach, they created the Soul Food Pyramid and the Soul Food Pyramid for Kids. At the office where the kitchens are located, Hebni teaches behavior modeling techniques through cooking demonstrations, and classes. Central Florida now has a Nutrition home where people can learn in a warm environment, which increases the ability to learn and retain information. We strive to keep the message simple so that people can 18

understand it.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU ALL TO DO WHAT YOU DO?
W
e saw a need to bring health and wellness awareness to Central Florida. There are not many black dietitians serving our communities, so we had no choice but to bring knowledge of holistic wellness to the community. We tailor our vision and strategies to serve people of color. Our service is not only limited to people of color, but for anyone who is looking to increase overall better health.
ALSO WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE FOR OUR COMMUNITY AND THE NEXT GENERATION TO OVERCOME IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
I
would say the greatest challenge among the people in our community is the acknowledgement and understanding of how to prevent diseases such as diabetes and obesity. We must get out of this phase of denying what our ailments are, and how we plan to reduce the problem or remove the health issue we are living with. Proactive strategies are vital to the health of our community. Chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and some cancers are nutrition related diseases. These diseases afflicting African-Americans are really related to our food intake, or lack of certain foods. Lack of knowledge, will-power/ desire, and lack of access to proper health care, quality grocery stores, and inability to talk to
a dietitian that understands your culture and eating habits can contribute to the health risk that we are currently facing in urban populations.
WHAT HAS BEEN GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT FOR HEBNI NUTRITION CONSULTANTS?
T
he greatest achievement has been the development of the Nutrition Resource Center (NRC) building, thanks to our many community partners. This center was created in 2009 and includes four test kitchens, classroom, a nutrition resource library, computer stations and office space for staff members. Since its opening, HEBNI has provided healthy cooking classes to youth and adults.
and childhood obesity incentives. We also offer after-school programs and summer camps which are held throughout the year, following the “Let’s Move” campaign created last year by the First Lady, Michelle Obama. HEBNI’S FUTURE PLANS ARE TO HELP LOCAL SOUL FOOD RESTAURANTS REVISE MENUS TO INCORPORATE HALF-PORTIONS AND HEALTHIER ENTREES. SOUL FOOD IS NOT GOING TO GO AWAY; WE JUST NEED TO GIVE IT A FACELIFT!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO UPCOMING ENTREPRENEUR AND/OR MINORITY DIETITIANS?
D
ream big, but have a plan! Be strategic and consistent. Most importantly, always remember to make sure you are aligned with the goals of your community. Stay on course and have smart goals. S.M.A.R.T. goals are (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely).
Roniece Weaver, MS RD LD, Excutive Director
YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS HAVE BEEN SO PROFOUND IN THE CENTRAL FLORIDA COMMUNITY, CAN YOU ENVISION HEBNI NUTRITION CONSULTANTS IN THE GLOBAL MARKET? HOW?
I
can envision expanding in a bigger market but it would take political will and money! Policymakers, government officials from state and local, would need to understand the purpose and the need to develop a facility such as ours. Federal funds such as, CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) can be used to develop in many urban environments and communities. Seeking professional help may begin with your local mayor, county commissioner, community leaders and community foundation is where we suggest people start.
Fabiola Gaines RD LD, President
WHAT AMENITIES OR SERVICES CAN THE COMMUNITY ANTICIPATE FROM HEBNI NUTRITION CONSULTANTS THIS YEAR?
O
ur facility has four beautiful state-of-theart kitchens that can seat up to 35 people for group cooking classes and individual cooking demonstrations. This facility allows us the opportunity to film webisodes in our office. Social media is really big, and we see the need to follow the trends of providing nutrition education through social media outlets. When you come to our office we try to impart 5 principles to healthy living. These principles include Purchasing, Preparation, Plating/Portion, and Physical Activity. We integrate these same principles into our webisodes. The new webisodes will be filmed, aired and launched online, focusing on diabetes management, weight-loss,

Here Comes The P-Factor !! s Americans face national unemployment rates of nearly 10%, it has created foreclosures and homelessness. Financial pressure has prompted a rise in depression, suicides, murders, crime and divorce. Individuals are reacting to this extreme stress in frustration, anger and even violent outbursts, because they have lost hope for their future. Pam Powell, known as “The Hope Doctor” is an author, life coach, minister, television host and professional speaker. She is no stranger to life’s storms. She has had more than her share of life’s tornadoes and hurricanes. Pam Powell has used her “P-Factor” Keys to Survival to overcome each challenge. Pam Powell, the “Hope Doctor,” has dedicated her life to the injection of hope into the hopeless and discouraged across America. Pam Powell, the “Hope Doctor,” has survived the loss of her decade old business, breast cancer, spinal surgery, hurricane damage to her home and eventually the loss of her home as a victim of mortgage fraud. She is the eldest of five siblings and at the age of 12, her father was murdered. Pam also helped her widowed mother, a former housewife with little income, to pull the family through. She states, “It has been a journey, but I refuse to let it consume me. Life will give you what you are willing to fight for and God is faithful.” "Dr. Pam" has personally met two United State presidents. After being cured from breast cancer, "Dr. Pam" was inspired to author the self-help book, The P–Factor. In this book, she has packaged seven powerful ingredients: Be Positive, Be Passionate, Be Persistent, Be Patient, Be Prayerful, Be Powerful, Be Prosperous. She credits her faith in God and her “P-Factors” Keys to Survival as being the catalyst that helped her to experience the thrill of victory rather than the agony of defeat. It was endorsed by the late Dottie Walters, CSP, Greater LA National Speakers Assoc. and "Mr. Motivator” himself, Les Brown. Likened unto the Biblical characters, Ruth and Job, Pam rises after being stripped of her material possessions. How did she overcome? The keys lie within her seven P-Factors. She quotes, “On this journey called life, know for certain that you will fall down, but rest assured, you can get up.” "The wizard lies in us” said "Dr. Pam." Pam, "The Hope Doctor," puts the “P” in survival 20

and her P-Factors can help you get through any situation you may be facing. In times like these where people all over the world are seeking even a glimpse of hope, her daily injections of a dose of hope will change your life. The P-Factor is a book that you can not afford to miss reading. Pam Powell, “The Hope Doctor,” after having survived many of these life-storms is currently a television talk show host for the Colours TV on the DISH network channel 9407 network. As a host of her own nationally syndicated television talk show, she has been featured on numerous radio and television shows around the country, including Rejoice 1140am, Time Warner Cable, Brighthouse Networks, and the Black Family Channel. She is also an international speaker for churches, corporations, schools, colleges, and non-profit organizations with her much-needed "P-Factors” Keys to Survival. Easter = Sundays Best… Easter fashion has a rich history, but its glory is that CHRIST has RISEN!!! The history of the Easter ensemble come from the philosophy of wearing one's Sunday Best to the glory of God. On Easter, style expectations are notched up a bit, in recognition of the day's enormous religious significance and to reverence EASTER as a symbol of REBIRTH. Almost every holiday has its fashion component, but few have as rich a legacy for finery as Easter. The day remains one of the last of old-school style. It has hairstylists recalling the best method for setting Shirley Temple curls. And it makes parents who normally are gender-neutral to putting daughters in frilly dresses and boys in pin striped suits and clip-on ties, but the sight of seeing dolled-up girls and duded-up boys, tends to bring a smile to many faces. Easter Sunday tends to bring prodigal congregants back into the church, and their spiritual devotion is no less admirable than their desire to be part of the fashion fellowship. There was no mandate that people had to wear “new clothes” on Easter Sunday, but that was certainly part of the tradition. Once upon a time, even if a woman couldn't afford an entire new ensemble, she would at least get herself a new hat or even fancied-up on an old favorite. Easter Sunday still reflects an old-fashioned approach to clothes - those women who believe that a head covering on Sunday morning, and particularly on Easter, is a sign of respect and reverence. And, of course, it doesn't hurt if that hat also happens to be just a wee bit fabulous.
EASTER FASHION FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
On Easter Sunday, folks got dressed up because they wanted to celebrate life and the generosity of spirit. When is the last time anyone ever combined those characteristics with the fashion industry? Predominately black churches were once filled with hat-wearing ladies and men in suits and spit-shined shoes, because on at least that one day out of 365, fashion symbolized something good, mighty and redemptive…HE HAS RISEN!!!

inister Javis Mays is being declared one of this season’s most phenomenal worship leaders. On the heels of the 2010 release of Javis Mays and Restoration’s freshman project, The Oil of Worship, Mays’ song “You’re My King” has been named the 2010 Rhythm of Gospel’s Praise and Worship Song of the Year. More recently, Minister Mays and Restoration have captured the confidence of judges at the Gospel Heritage Praise and Worship Conference at the Potter’s House in Jacksonville, winning first place in the talent showcase. The lyricist and leader of worship has exercised his gifts in many arenas, teaching and training worship teams and congregations how to effectively enter the presence of God and tap into the fresh flow of God’s anointing and power. While faithfully serving as the Youth Minister and Worship Minister for the Apostolic Worship Center of Orlando, under the leadership of Pastor Frank Thompson, Minister Mays has made his way to the throne room again, birthing out the group’s sophomore project. Has music always been a part of your life, and to whom would you accredit the artistic influence? I’ve been singing since elementary school , and I started writing in middle school. I started taking piano lessons at 5-years old under the tutelage of my grandmother, Ernestine Johnson. I accredit my artistic influence to Psalmist Andrea Wilson, Pastor Lamar Simmons, Israel Houghton, Jonathan Nelson, and Jonathan Butler. They have been strong influences in my life concerning praise and worship. You demonstrate an unquestionable thirst for God when you worship. Where did this passion for God’s presence come from? I have always had a desire for worship. I was always listening to Hillsong Music and would be found writing songs that were unfamiliar when I was a teenager. At the age of 15, I became the minister of music and began initiating the flow of worship in our services. Worship has always been my safe place. It’s my secret place. It is where Jesus hides me under the cleft of the rock. It’s my daily interaction with the Lord. Worship for some is this formality that people go through in church, but for you it is a lifestyle. What does that mean? It means that I am available. Worship keeps me focused on Jesus. I’ve never considered myself to be a perfect individual. However, I always want to keep a

free flow between us (Jesus and me), so I present my life to Him daily. This relationship guides me throughout my days and nights. It influences my behaviors and my decisions. I want to please Him and make Him smile. You’ve only completed one project so far, and you’re already winning awards. Do you have your sights set on the Grammys, Stellar and Dove Awards? I am under a new management team, and we are definitely looking forward to stepping into those venues soon. Honestly, winning awards has not been my focus. Every time we have won an award, it was a surprise. I never even knew I was nominated until someone would call and tell me. It has been a blessing! We will be submitting music this year to those venues, and we are looking for great things to happen. Tell us a little about the project you are working on. We are currently working on our new project and it will be a compilation of new and old songs that we’ve written. This project will have more cross-cultural and Sunday morning worship music. I believe that the sound on this project is foundational and prophetic, as it will speak to the hearts of pastors, worship leaders, and saints. People will be healed, delivered, and set free because of the sound that the Lord is releasing. Most of these songs were written during prayer and worship times.

n today's society, criminal background checks are more and more common. They are used when applying for school, work, housing, loans, grants, special licenses, getting promotions, security clearances, and at any other time when your criminal background is an issue. Most people do not realize that even if you were arrested but never formally charged, or even if you had a criminal case dismissed or you were found not guilty, the record of your arrest and court case still exists. Your non-judicial criminal record includes police or corrections reports and your judicial criminal record includes court files and State Attorney files. These are public records and contrary to popular belief, a criminal record is not automatically sealed nor does it go away over time. That means that anyone can go into the court file and read everything about your case. Your record remains public and permanent until ordered sealed or expunged by a judge. If you qualify for sealing or expungement of your criminal record, and a judge grants your petition, you no longer have to worry about that one mistake you made or crime you were wrongly accused of following you around. Florida law allows an individual who has never been convicted of a crime (including misdemeanors and traffic cases such as DUI, driving while license suspended and reckless driving) and who has never received a previous record sealing or expunction, to request that the court seal or expunge non-judicial records and judicial records. Once ordered to be sealed or expunged, all records of your arrest and/or court case are physically sealed by the clerk of the court and any other agencies having information about your case; it is removed from the public record and is thus no longer available for public access. What is even better is that once sealed, you can legally deny or fail to acknowledge that you were arrested for the crime which has been sealed or expunged. This opportunity is only available one time per person, and is not available for all crimes in certain circumstances. Additionally, you can only seal a single charge from your record, or multiple charges if all of the charges arise out of the same incident. Thus, if you have
BY
KarlYn hYlTOn
multiple criminal charges on your record from different dates, if you qualify, you will only be able to seal the record from one of those dates. Even if your arrest and/or court record was sealed or expunged, you may have to divulge the fact that your record was sealed or expunged in certain situations. These situations include when you are applying for a job with a criminal justice agency, the Department of Education, Department of Children and Families, any charter private or parochial school or any local governmental entity that licenses child care facilities. Additionally, you have a legal obligation to divulge that you have had a record sealed when attempting to purchase a firearm, when you are a defendant in a criminal prosecution and/or when applying for licensing with the Florida Bar. You will also likely have to divulge a sealed or expunged record when you are the subject of immigration proceedings. It is important to note however, that it is illegal for anyone to whom your sealed or expunged record is disclosed, to disclose information about your record to anyone except you or anyone having direct employment or licensing decisions. How did you get your start in interior design and event coordinating? I have always had a niche for interior design, starting with my first home that I designed from ground zero. It was displayed as a part of my talent, which gave me great recognition and business in the community. At what point did you realize this was a passion that could lead to prosperity? When interior design was all I could think or dream of, I then found myself researching the most profound artifacts worldwide. Is there any particular type of event or design that you would say is your specialty? All of my events and designs receive top priority and my full attention. How do the design ideas come together? With a host of sample layouts for the client, until we reach a desirable design for our clients.

A true meaning of sheer Elegance, Style, and Grace! Southern Glamour Design Firm encompasses more than event coordinating and interior design. What else does the company specialize in? WHY iS A MediCAl eXAM reQUired For A Green CArd?
W
hen a foreign national is trying to immigrate to the United States or adjust his status in the United States, a medical examination is required. Many foreign nationals are unclear as to the purpose and scope of the medical examination. Medical examinations are necessary to verify good health and admissibility to the United States on medical grounds. All medical examinations include: • Physical Examination: applicants are required to have a physical examination (to include complete disrobing), and a mental status evaluation. • Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test: All applicants 2 years of age and older are required to have a tuberculin skin test (TST). • Vaccinations: Most applicants need to show that they are current with all vaccinations recommended by US public health officials. You should have vaccinations for mumps, measles, rubella, polio, tetanus, diphtheria toxoids, pertussis, influenza type B, and hepatitis B. If you are unable to submit all of your vaccination records at the time of the exam, or if you have never had certain vaccines, the Civil Surgeon or Panel Physician can administer them to you. It is important to not try to fulfill your vaccination requirements before you meet with the Panel Physician or Civil Surgeon, in case it is not medically appropriate for you to have one or more of the required vaccines. As of Dec. 14, 2009, the zoster and the HPV vaccine were no longer required.
Who gives the medical exam? Medical examinations are given by licensed and experienced doctors, called Civil Surgeons (in the
U.S.A.) and Panel Physicians (outside of the U.S.A.). Doctors who qualify as Civil Surgeons or Panel Physicians receive special and ongoing immigrationoriented medical training and policy updates. Note: A medical exam performed by a doctor NOT approved by USCIS will not be recognized. What if I am pregnant? If you are pregnant, you are required to have a medical exam, but some parts of it may be postponed until after delivery of your baby, depending on the circumstances of your case. If you have any concerns, you should discuss them with your family doctor before the medical exam, with the Civil Surgeon, or with the Panel Physician. What if vaccinations are contrary to my religious beliefs or moral convictions? If you have firmly held religious or moral beliefs that do not permit vaccinations, you may still be eligible for an immigrant visa or adjustment of status. You will need to apply for a waiver of vaccination requirements. Who pays for the vaccinations? The applicant is responsible for paying the appropriate fee for all vaccinations directly to the Civil Surgeon, as agreed upon with the Civil Surgeon. You should ask about the price of the vaccinations before the medical examination or the administration of the vaccinations. Can I be forced to be vaccinated for immigration purposes? If you refuse to receive the vaccines required for immigration purposes, as mandated by the immigration laws of the United States, your application for legal permanent resident status may be denied. What happens after the medical exam? After the medical exam is complete, the Panel Physician (if you are abroad) or the Civil Surgeon (if you are in the United States) will certify the results on the appropriate forms and place them in a sealed envelope. DO NOT OPEN THE SEALED ENVELOPE. Turn in your envelope with your immigration application to your attorney or the office that requested the medical examination. PASTOR
JUSTIN FELTON
E
& PRAYZE TEAM
Ushering in a Fresh PRAYze
nergetic, exciting, and empowering! Pastor Justin Felton and the PRAYze Team bring to every arena an exuberant praise, charging atmospheres and electrifying the hearts of believers with a “fresh praise” experience. Raised on the altar, and in church all of his young life, Pastor Justin is no stranger to choirs, praise teams, and the worship experience. This Central Florida, native son had both the impact and influence of a mother and grandmother who have always been known as “songbirds.” Getting it honestly, Pastor Justin captured the heart of another songbird, Minister Vonetta Felton, and the two of them make beautiful music together, as they lead the PRAYze Team. At what point did singing become a part of your life? How long has the group been together, and how did it form? Wow! Singing became a part of my life ever since I was conceived. My mom and grandmother (Stephanie Felton and the late Mattie Bell Felton) sang all the time around me. Growing up in the church and being influenced by them, I literally had no choice. Around 12-years old is when I began to take music a little more seriously. I had my first studio experience with Bishop Allen T. D. Wiggins, and that moment seeded the next level of music in me. Describe the musical style of Justin Felton and The PRAYZE Team. The music style of Justin Felton and The PRAYze Team can be compared to a cross-blend of Tye Tribbett, Kirk Franklin, and Fred Hammond. Now, that may seem like a lot in the melting pot, but they’re my major influences. I’ve taken the stage presence of Tye, the musical sound of Kirk, but the heart of worship from Fred. Somehow, through the anointing, we’ve managed to make this melting pot a genuine and original sound. Is there any one particular group of praisers and worshipers that your ministry targets? I believe our music ministry is targeted towards young adults and teens. The music is so contemporary in its praise and worship style that it tends to attract that audience; but, I’ve been taught to never forget where I’ve come from. So we’ve added music that helps young adults and teens appreciate Gospel music from back in the day. Your group has ministered all over. Tell us about some of the doors that the Lord has given you access to. Well, last year we had the opportunity to sing at Walt Disney’s Gospel Choir Fest at the Night of Joy and we were awarded the Silver-Finalist. The judges were EMI Gospel executives who are currently awaiting the finished CD project. As a result of that, we have traveled extensively since and many other doors have been opened as well.

The PRAYze Team has been together now for about three years. The name TPT actually came when the group went through a transition period from another group name which was Sevyn. We formed that group back in 2006 and around 2008 God had us to change the name to what He purposed us to do, which is praise Him. I used to be apart of the Christian Methodist [Episcopal]denomination, and every two years they have a national young adult retreat. In 2006, they asked me to be totally in charge of the music for the week, and from there, we kept the group moving. Where does the material that you minister come from? The material that we minister comes from time with God, good and bad moments in my life, worship experiences, and uncommon inspiration. Are there any projects on the press or in the wings? Yes, our first live recording will be released in May of this year, entitled “I Am Praise…” Live in Orlando. Tell us what we can expect once it hits the street? Once the project goes into distribution, I really think you can expect to hear a new sound for this area. I believe it really would give this area a deeper sense and appreciation for national artists. As music consumers, we often don’t think about the hard work that went into making an album, especially on a national level. With this project, I believe listeners will appreciate a hometown, homeboy who’s right in their backyard, making quality national music.
