STAR

94.5

WORKING HARD TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE From the morning show to moving and shaking in the community, STAR 94.5’s Monica May is not just a personality; but a passionate, woman of purpose whose ear is bent to the mouth of the community and whose finger is definitely on the pulse of Central Florida. Ms. May is the host of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, as well as news/community affairs director at STAR 94.5, a COX Radio station in Orlando, FL. Her compassion and commitment to the community have earned her the well-deserving title of “THE HARDEST WORKING WOMAN IN RADIO.” Monica May will serve as one of the hosts for GospelNOW’s First Annual Christmas Gala at Rosen Shingle Creek on December 4, 2010. In a brief interview with “the interweaver,” as she calls herself, Monica May shares with GospelNOW, her passion and mission as moderator and motivator.

GN: MM:

Where did the name “Monica May” come from?

on the radio,” but work from the community perspective, which I really have a passion for.

I was named after my paternal grandmother who was from St. Kit in the islands.

You really do appear to be the “hardest working woman” in radio. How were you introduced to the business; and is it more than “business” for you?

Being a native New Yorker, what reason or season in your life would you say is responsible for you being in Orlando? Radio moves you all over and I was blessed to begin my career right after college in Washington, D.C. Over time, I had the opportunity to move to Florida in 1994 to work at 102 JAMZ in morning drive.

How long have you been STAR 94.5’s “Monica May,” and what did you bring to this market? I left 102 JAMZ after 5 years, and once my non-compete clause ended, I began to fill-in for JoJo at STAR 94.5 while I built my own company. After 2 years I was offered a position in Houston, TX. to work for a non-profit faith based organization. When I got the call that STAR 94.5 wanted me to do News and Community Affairs, I admit I was hesitant initially. I never considered moving back to Florida. However, the challenge to work at the station and really help “brand” their community affairs was quite 4 appealing. So, for me it wasn’t just coming back to “be

I don’t think I was ever introduced, I knew it was what I wanted and went after it. It always was a business for me. I realized how I could become my own commodity and worked really hard to perfect my craft as a radio personality.

We see your face in many places; you are very active in the community. What is the motivation behind your consistent community involvement? I enjoy people and have always become entrenched in the community I’m working in. Orlando is a lovely place with warm people whom I’ve developed a strong attachment to and I believe they care about me also.

Is there any particular group, or any particular cause that you are more inclined to advocate in the community? Those who know me know that I’m just as passionate about the personal development of young people as I am my radio career. Being able to mesh the two brings me great joy!

Growing up in Harlem, with a father who was a jazz musician; what early exposures in your life helped to shape where and who you are today, both personally and professionally? My father, Earl May was a bassist for Billy Taylor, Dizzy Gillespie and he had his own trio later. The Earl May Trio featured singer, Gloria Lynn. I was raised around jazz greats and practically grew up in the Apollo Theater. So my appreciation for entertainment comes from my father. My work ethic however, is all mom. She worked for the City

of New York and went to work every day. She did what she had to do and went home. I’m able to get up at 3:15AM every day and do what I do.... It was a great life!

We can catch you on STAR 94.5FM during the weekday broadcasts of the Tom Joyner Morning Show and on Sunday mornings for Community Connection. Beyond these platforms, where else can we find you? I moderate both educational and political forums, provide encouragement to teens in our middle and high schools and host various entertainment events.

You always appear to enjoy what you are doing. Would you say that you are at play when you are at work?

14351 GREATER PINES BLVD CLERMONT, FL 34711 Member of Better Business Bureau

I just make it look that way (smile)....it’s work though that I happen to really enjoy and that’s a blessing.

What deliberate footprint or thumbprint are you making as you journey? That my life is not my own...I work hard every day to make a difference some way and in someone else’s life.

DEFEATING DOUBT BY: SHANNAN LEWIS-BLAIR

Dealing with and defeating doubt can be a challenging crippling experience, because it has the tendency to permeate our life without so much as fair warning. It appears that in one moment of belief we are buoyant in spirit, engaged in the moment, excited about the prospects. Then something happens or someone comes along and does something, which shakes our feeling of confidence and belief. Regardless of our determination to maintain emotional composure and some semblance of rationale, what often happens is that we give in to the momentary lapse in confidence and give in to the feeling of disbelief, whether it is in us, in others or in a system. Living in a fallen world plagued with imperfections; and being susceptible to inner struggles based on our self-image and background, means that doubt will take hold from time to time. However, those moments or (extended periods) can be conquered, if a decision is made to deal with and defeat it. Doubt can be dealt with and defeated so that our personal, professional and spiritual lives can blossom. Frankly, there are times when the vicissitudes of life become overwhelming and we find our strength, motivation and inner belief slipping away like sand through our fingers. It is usually in those moments of human frailty that doubt slowly creeps in, causing former feelings of courage and confidence to be replaced by disbelief and doubt. Granted, it is not odd to succumb to those feelings from time to time when something or someone causes us to assume a position of doubt. In fact, 8 by virtue of the fact that we are human, simply means

that our emotions will fall prey to the outer and inner elements that strike at our self perception. As the popular saying goes, “LIFE HAPPENS,” so it is not strange to respond with doubt when life unfolds in ways that shake our belief or cause us to grapple with thoughts, feelings and people we once held in high esteem. However, that does not give us sufficient reason to accept the doubt when it creeps in. One must be cognizant of the reality that life is a mixed blessing and various situations can shake us to the core, but we must not give those circumstances or people that kind of power over our confidence. Regardless of the issues that come our way, doubt should never be allowed to creep in and fester, but should be dealt with and defeated. Doubt can be dealt with by acknowledging the feelings, putting things in proper perspective, and being intentional about moving back to a

bold belief. Once we realize that doubt has taken hold of our thoughts, feelings and emotions, we have an immediate decision to make. The time it takes to plan and participate in the inevitable ‘pity-party’ in which we allow ourselves to wallow in the disbelief and justify the negative feelings that are associated with them – we could choose another way to deal with the doubt. Identify the feeling for what it is – doubt, disbelief; then immediately choose to evaluate the reason/cause and put things in perspective. Sometimes that requires taking the emotions or preconceived notions out of it, and really being objective. If we can embrace that reality then the next part is easy, simply because we have to make up our minds, to move back to the place where we first believed. If it is a case of self-doubt, we must have an honest conversation with ourselves in which we boost those feelings of self worth, sharpen the self-esteem, bolster the self-confidence and turn that internal dialog back to objective optimism. When that is successfully accomplished, the dark dismal dreary doubt will no longer have a safe place to stay and we can move forward confidently believing and embracing the possibilities – which quite frankly are endless!!

CONVERSATION WITH

Pastor Riva Tims Being a woman and a pastor can be tough and challenging. Being a young woman as a pastor can be even more difficult. Now, being a young woman in the pastorate for fourteen years and having to go through not only a major life "transition,” but a major publicized life "transition" is beyond any words of difficulty. Many would crumble and give up on faith. Many would turn away and desert their calling; especially if they walked in Pastor Riva Tims’ shoes. But Pastor Riva decided to leave her footprint for other young women to follow. She picked up her pieces, and kept it moving towards a successful health and wellness business, a brand new church recently celebrating its one year anniversary, and four beautiful children who keep her organized and a "Jewel of Christ.”

What was the inspiration to begin your own ministry? Well, for me it was a call from the Lord. I was in the midst of transition and I went through a major healing process...and it was wonderful. I really did not think I would ever become a pastor again. I didn't think I really wanted it. But over time, I started working with an outreach [program] which I started, The Majestic Life Institute. It was going well and more people started coming and asking how they could join. I would tell them they couldn't join, but they can volunteer. Then it got to a point where it mainly turned into a church. And it has been about one year; and it’s been wonderful.

Wow, that's nice. So with the first year of starting your ministries behind you, what's your focus?

10

Our focus is to equip the members to do the work of the ministries. The Lord told me "Don't grow the church. Grow the sheep.” So, most of our efforts are poured into the members; so they can have not only the understanding of the word of God, but they can also take it with them and use it with what God has gifted them to do. You'll notice in our ministries that our members get to exercise the gifts that God has given to them. And we challenge them so they aren't always just sitting there getting the word and getting constipated with the word. So we give them a venue and the opportunity to exercise their gift.

Being a young woman in such a prominent position, what's your strongest advice for other young women?

I like that! So, what else do you have going on at the moment?

Never to lose your identity that God gave you. Often we I also have my own business, a health and wellness get caught up in what other people want us to be. I really company. I started it two years ago and it’s been very believe as a young successful. It's woman, there are The Lord told me "Don't grow the church. Grow a body shaping problems and there the sheep.” So, most of our efforts are poured into the business, as well are assignments members; so they can have not only the understanding of as nutritional. It’s we were given for the word of God, but they can also take it with them and healthy, and it’s a purpose. And use it with what God has gifted them to do. something I [said we are the only I] would never do; ones that can do it network marketing. because we are the original persons that God called to do it. But in my transition, I never really had many opportunities I would say never lose yourself. that I could reach out for. My background has been a pastor for 14 years. I didn't know what I was going to do in that With all that you have going on, how do you balance being transition; but God blessed me with that business, and I'm a single mom to four kids? able to help others start their businesses as well. It gives Organization is very key, very important. Because as me a very nice income to continue doing what I'm doing. I you know, [being in] ministries is packed in itself. But also have a daily radio broadcast, and also have a television when you have four kids, and I have a special needs son as broadcast. well, I organize very well and I have my family. My mom and my dad have been unbelievable. They really help me out a lot.

That's wonderful. So, tell me about Jewels of Christ? Oh, that's an amazing ministry! Sometimes we women have problems with our self esteem and valuing who we are. But when we get a realization of who we really are, we are the jewels of Christ; we are created by him and wonderfully made. So we teach our women in this ministry, which was actually around before the church was in existence, about their value. We notice their esteems are stronger. They learn never to come out of character of what God called them to be. And that's a woman of grace, a woman of power, a woman of character. And no matter where we are, it’s recognized that we are a jewel of Christ in just the way we carry ourselves.

Majestic Life Ministries celebrated their first year anniversary in October, with a celebration to the glory of God, featuring local pastors extending well-wishes. The church is located at 6782 N. Orange Blossom Trail Orlando, Florida 32810

WITH DEMICA PAIGE

D OES THE HEALTH CARE REFORM HAVE THE FORMULA FOR SUCCESS ?

Q:

KISS (Keep It Simple Silly) is a great cliché that should be used for everything. With that in mind, let’s define and understand what health care reform is. How will we recognize reform when we see it?

DEMICA PAIGE:Health is defined as a healthy state of wellbeing, free from disease. Reform simply means to change into an improved form or condition. Health Care Reform would then be the treatment and prevention of illness into a wellbeing that is free from disease. At the end of the day, health care reform should begin to show that more US citizens are free from diseases. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S. A disease that reoccurs or continues to be repeated even after cured or has been reversed, is called a chronic disease. The four most common causes of chronic disease are not enough physical activity, bad eating habits, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Statistics show these are the main causes of death and poor health. These causes are preventable, and can be modified through lifestyle changes. Trust for America’s Health - 2009 “F as in Fat” report states, obesity alone cost the nation a total of $139 billion in direct and indirect costs per year. A 2008 study reported that obese employees cost private employers approximately $45 billion a year in medical expenses and excessive absenteeism. Obese people pay 36 percent more for health care and 77 percent more for medication when compared with normal weight people. The cost of obese related disease alone is higher than the cost associated with smoking or alcohol consumption.

♦ ASSESSMENT: An annual health and lifestyle assessment used to identify health risks, early detection and treatment. (e.g., blood test, blood pressure, BMI, fitness, etc.) Also assess the organization’s environment: Does your organization’s cafeteria and vending machine offer healthy choices? ♦ INTERNAL MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION:

Utilize frequent and several forms of communication: emails, newsletters, paycheck stuffers, posters etc. to market and communicate a consistent message of wellness. ♦ ACCESS TO HEALTH EDUCATION & RESOURCES: Increased knowledge of healthy lifestyle behavior is invaluable. Offer explanations of health care benefits, self-care programs, workshops, software, nutrition, physical activity, stress management, smoking cessation, etc. ♦ REWARDS AND INCENTIVES: Motivation is the key in participation that involves lifestyle changes. Using incentives to reward people for participating in healthy behavior modifications has proven to be highly effective. ♦ OUTREACH: Programs that offer participation for spouses and dependants have proven to have a higher return of investment. Family events such as: Fun Family Field Day, Family Olympics and Iron Man Chef Contests will extend the impact of your wellness program. ♦ EVALUATION: Regular program evaluation, outcome analysis, ongoing health tracking programs for physical activity, wellness activities and events must be present in a successful wellness program. As the new 2010 Health Care Reform unfolds, look for these key success components on your job, at schools, churches and community programs. This proven prevention and wellness formula will reduce your monthly premiums, increase employee and employer savings; decrease the risk of preventable diseases and improve overall individual and corporate productivity. It is a formula for health care reform success.

Nevertheless, a comprehensive wellness and prevention program is effective in reducing the cost of health care and the risk factors associated with common chronic diseases. Johnson & Johnson is a leader in the field of corporate wellness. A 2009 “Kaiser Health News” interview with Dr. Fikry Isaac, Executive Director of Global Health Services and a properly designed prenatal exercise program, at Johnson & Johnson states, the company launched its first you will maintain cardiovascular and muscular fitness wellness initiative in 1978. More than thirty years later, throughout the duration of your pregnancy. the program has over 80 percent employee participation. In 2002, there was a $225 per employee per year reduction in health care cost. In 2007, $400 per employee per year For more individual and corporate cost savings. Within the first two years of implementing the solutions to your fitness and health initiative, the company began to see the impact. HEALTH

Good mental health is essential to your overall

good physical health. Years ago, just the mere subject of mental illness was surrounded with mystery, stigma and fear; which stood in the way of people receiving help. Most people still believe that mental disorders are rare and “happen to someone else." In fact, mental disorders are common and widespread. An estimated 54 million Americans suffer from some form of mental disorder in a given year. Most families are not prepared to cope with learning their loved one has a mental illness. It can be physically and emotionally trying, and can make us feel vulnerable to the opinions and judgments of others. Today, we have made tremendous progress in our understanding, and especially in our ability to offer effective treatments. Mental illness causes mild to severe disturbances in thought and/or behavior, resulting in an inability to cope with life’s ordinary demands and routines. Mental illness is common, and the milder conditions are very common. The vast majority of individuals with mental disorders continue to function in their daily lives, although with varying degrees of impairment. There are more than 200 classified forms of mental illness. Severe and persistent mental illness is less common, but still afflicts three percent of the population. Many of the problems Americans face in obtaining good mental health services are similar to the problems in obtaining general medical services. Mental health problems may be related to excessive stress due to a particular situation or series of events. As with cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, mental illnesses are often physical as well as emotional and psychological. Mental illnesses may be caused by a reaction to environmental stresses, genetic factors, biochemical imbalances, or a combination of all of these. Recently, the nation’s sagging economy has negatively affected people’s lives and the lives of their loved ones. 14 Health care providers have noted sharp increases in sleeplessness, stress, depression, anxiety, and overwhelming

fear and frustration; as well as, other negative mental health indicators since the recession has taken hold, with job loss and financial insecurity pushing these increases even higher. State of the art treatment for mental illness is very effective—as effective as treatments for high blood pressure, cancer, and arthritis. With proper care and treatment, many individuals learn to cope or recover from a mental illness or emotional disorder; but good treatment for mental illness takes a comprehensive approach (like treatment for ulcers, diabetes or heart disease require). Psychiatric treatment involves a full mental and physical health evaluation, and an individualized treatment plan. Sometimes the misuse of drugs or alcohol is present and will require treatment also. Treatment may include psychotherapy (talk therapy), psychiatric medication, or other modalities. Mental Health professionals help patients understand illnesses and understand what they can do to resolve life problems that contribute to illnesses. This may involve issues on the job, in school, or within the family and community. Educational, medical, spiritual, and interpersonal, as well as basic issues such as adequate housing and nutrition are considered, and can include such activities as spending time with family and friends, praying, attending religious services, proper nutrition, exercising, watching television, reading, or listening to music. Keeping your mental health in balance during times of increased stress – such as the current economic crisis – is an important part of your overall health and well-being. Recognize that stress affects your entire body. The challenge is to find effective ways to cope with this stress. Physical activity, diet, sleep and stress management all play a part in having a healthy mind and a healthy life. Taking care of your own needs will help you remain healthy and able to respond to the needs of your family.

The American Psychiatric Association offers the following tips for Maintaining a Healthy Mind: • Surround Yourself with Supportive People Look to family and friends for support when facing an emotionally stressful situation. • Surround yourself with people you trust and who have your best interests in mind. Their encouragement and feedback will help you think positively. • Focus on the Positive Avoid activities that cause you to dwell on why you are stressed. • Amid the steady drumbeat of negative economic news, limit your news consumption and make time for other activities, such as listening to music or reading a book. • Make sure conversations with friends, family or co-workers do not dwell too long on stressful or negative topics. • Socialize and Have Fun Invite friends and family for low cost and fun activities – watch a movie or play a game at home, take a hike or a walk, and/or arrange a neighborhood cookout. Inexpensive social activities can help keep you and your family healthy and focused on the positive. • Stay in tune with how you are feeling if you notice that stress is interfering with your daily life, even when you are taking positive steps to manage stress, or if you think you or someone you know may have a mental or emotional problem, you can get to a point where you need additional help. There are many places you can turn to for help and support – including your family doctor, religious or spiritual advisor, or a mental health professional. Know when to get additional help and support; it is important to remember that you don’t need to face it alone…… there is hope. Or an

PRE-DIABETES

What You Need to Know to Prevent the Disease

Did you know if you are 45 years of age or older, overweight, and inactive, you may be at risk for developing diabetes? In other words you may be pre-diabetic. Pre-diabetes means you have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough to be called diabetes. Too much glucose in your blood can damage your body over time. Pre-diabetes is also called impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). If your fasting glucose range (mg/dl) is between 100 – 125 or, between 140 – 199 two hours after eating, then you are considered pre-diabetic. Most people who are pre-diabetic don’t have any symptoms. Your doctor will need to test your blood to find out if your blood glucose levels are higher than normal. If you are 45 years old or older, your doctor may recommend that you be tested for pre-diabetes, especially if you are overweight. Being overweight means your body mass index (BMI) is over 25. BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height. Please ask your physician or a registered dietitian for more information on what your BMI status means if you are not sure. Being overweight and physically inactive can contribute to pre-diabetes which can lead to Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. You can sometimes reverse pre-diabetes with weight loss that comes from healthy eating and physical activity. In fact, The Diabetes Prevention Study shows that losing 5-7 % of your body weight, exercising for 1/2 hour per day and following a healthy diet can reduce your risk of getting diabetes by up to 58%. If you are concerned that you may be prediabetic, please contact your health care provider or 16 a registered dietitian in to help you achieve better glucose levels.

how thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind? Job 37:17

ith summer behind us and winter coming, it's time to look forward to the cooler weather, the fashion it will bring, and the impact it will have on next year. Perhaps it’s time that we as Christians update our wardrobes a bit. Yes, Autumn / Fall trends are on the horizon. With the new season comes a lot of new looks, and for those that aren't new, new takes on established fashion trends. As always, church-goers must be in tune with Fall’s fashion. Top designers have done their jobs… it’s our turn to do ours! (Yeah!) Let’s make sure that the churches are filled with fashionable women and men, with fabulous winter style this season! ;) Christian ladies, you can wear sweaters, boots, and even leather to church, YES CHURCH! The rule of wearing only knits, wool and faux are a thing of the past, but NOT obsolete! In terms of colors, black, brown, and gray are the traditional hues for winter coats. You will see these colors on most women, but if you truly want to stand out from the winter crowd, a little attitude won’t hurt. Venture in bright plaids, pinks, reds, or go all winter white (or beige/cream) for a fabulous winter look that will pop. This season, also try colors such as camel, green, and animal prints always make a BOLD statement. I have noticed that a lot of church ladies prefer faux. One thing about faux, try to choose something that goes over the top, something outrageous, and something that is clearly a fashion statement! FASHION FOOD FOR THOUGHT: So whether you go bold, bright, real, faux or traditional, the important thing to remember is that your piece should look fabulous. And if it doesn’t - it’s not worth 18 the money!!

Stella Award Nominee From Detroit Michigan

ROB

J

PERFORMING LIVE AT SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4TH

MORE THAN A SINGER

In the midst of uncertainty and untimely events, Michigan native, Robert “Rob J” Jones turned to the truth and timelessness of the music that has cradled and carried him throughout his lifetime. When Michigan’s automotive industry was impacted by the country’s economic catastrophe, gospel artist “Rob J” was also; but he found favor and faithfulness in the will of God for his life; and in response, has reached out to strengthen the community around him. His love for God, his commitment to community, and his passion for his purpose are the elements that have empowered the life of singer, songwriter, and producer, “Rob J.” As he makes preparations to participate in GospelNow’s first Annual Christmas Gala, the 2009 Stellar Nominee for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Gospel CD of the Year opens the window to the path that has propelled him to this place, and the passion that is certain to keep him on top.

GN: Coming from a region where it seems as though everyone grew up with a microphone, was it ever your ambition to become recognized for your music?

As a singer, songwriter, and producer; are there any projects that we should look for in the near future?

RJ: Yes. I have always been involved in music. My grandfather was a Pastor and he sang in different quartet groups. My grandmother was also well-known locally for being an amazing soloist. So, music and singing are what I grew up around. It’s in my blood. My ambition with music grew even more as I got older.

Yes! In January 2011, I will be re-releasing my “Crucified” CD on EGI Records, nationally. It is being remixed and re-mastered, with some surprises! Also I will be announcing a planned tour called “The Restoration Tour.” Also, in 2011 I will be releasing another CD titled “The Restoration.” It will feature both live and studio songs.

How was your interest in gospel music piqued, and what path did you take to get to this season in your life and music?

You recently hosted a benefit concert for the Flint community. Who were the beneficiaries and how did the idea develop?

I was raised in church. With my grandfather as a Pastor, Gospel music has always been a big part of my life. I also was in two different Gospel groups before becoming a solo artist. Gospel music for me is inspirational, uplifting, thought-provoking, and as real as real can be.

Yes, yes….It was amazing! The concert was called “A Night of Restoration.” It featured both local artists, and artists like Gwen Covington from Orlando, Florida. Portions from the love offering are being donated to The Vera Rison Library, and to a community organization called CBOP. CBOP helps many other local charities that help the youth, and places that help drug users get clean. The library I decided to help is in danger of closing. This library serves thousands of people. It would be a great loss to the community. The idea developed from my desire to give back; to be more than a singer. I feel that as a Gospel artist, my ministry has to be in a leadership role for being a help, where help is needed.

Growing up, was there any particular artist or group that you tried to emulate? Now this may seem strange, seeing as I am a Gospel artist; but, I loved music from artists like Prince, Michael Jackson, and Janet Jackson. I also loved artists like Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, and Marvin Sapp.

Your style of music is considered to be a blend of Pop, HipHop, R&B, Christian, and Gospel. What is the motivation behind the blend or how did the style develop? I want my music to reach people who may not listen to Gospel music. I want to be a leader in making Gospel music the most popular music out. I love many different styles of music, and honestly, most of us do. So, blending different styles together with a Gospel message is the right progression to bring more people in, and then minister to them.

As the “Rob J” brand continues to develop, and people become more familiar with the moniker “Rob J,” what impact do you intend to make through your music and ministry? I intend to be an inspiration through my music. I plan to impact Gospel music in a way that is inviting to all people. The Bible says, for you to come as you are, not after you change for the better. I plan to offer excitement, innovation, 21 and praise!

You Deserve All Praise

W

alking by faith, and praising God all the way is Orlando resident, national recording artist, Madelyn Berry on the BerryTightMusic label. Debuting earlier this year, her 2010 sophomore release, “You Deserve All Praise,” is a compelling compilation of energetic, exciting exhortations to give God all the praise. The praise and worship masterpiece produced by Madelyn’s husband, Taron Berry, commands atmospheres and ushers worshippers into an unforgettable experience in God’s presence. The skill and anointing of this gospel powerhouse is a “prerequisite for any psalmist to be most effective,” according to Gospel Artist, Darwin Hobbs, with whom Madelyn has previously had the opportunity to sing backup. Madelyn Berry’s passion for God and her genuine, sincere heart for worship are not newfound experiences; but rather, the lifelong fibers that have kept her focused and faithful to the God she has loved and sang about since childhood. She speaks with GospelNow about the influences on her career, and the impact she intends to make in the Kingdom of God and the Gospel Music Industry.

GN:

What impact has the recent release of “You Deserve All Praise” had on your life and schedule?

The release of "You Deserve All Praise" has had a huge impact on my life and schedule. It has been an amazing journey so far. Many people have been so blessed by the project, and we have received numerous positive responses from YouTube videos, Facebook® fan page, etc. This is so important to me because, it's always my prayer that the music God gives my husband and I will minister to and bless people. My schedule has definitely changed. This year I made my first national appearance on Bobby Jones Gospel, featured artist at the House of Blues Sunday Brunch, opened for several artists such as Vickie Winans, Smokie Norful, Canton Jones, VaShawn Mitchell, and Judy Jacobs. In addition, I have ministered with Darwin Hobbs, Richard Smallwood, and Jonathan Nelson. I recently joined Martha Munizzi's team, which I minister and travel with her. God is AWESOME!!! He has opened all these doors within a year!!! He Deserves All the Praise!!!!

MB:

You can’t sing as passionately and powerfully as you do without having a strong foundation in the Gospel. Describe your childhood exposures to God and Gospel Music. I grew up in church. I gave my life to God at an early age. I have always had a passion and a heart for God. I remember as a child my parents always played gospel music in our home. My parents always made sure I would use my gift for God. I did my first solo at the age of eleven. That experience changed my life forever. I remember singing the hymn "Blessed Assurance" and by the time I got to the chorus, I saw people shouting, crying, waving their hands, and singing along. Although I was young, I knew that it wasn't me, but the power of God.

Most artists have a playlist. Who are the artists, and what are the songs on your playlist? My playlist consists of various artists such as Mary Mary, David & Nicole Binion, Martha Munizzi, Darwin Hobbs, Marvin Sapp, The SoulSeekers, Ce Ce Winans, and Jonathan Nelson etc. I love it all, from praise & worship to contemporary gospel.

Of these, which artist(s) would you say has/have influenced you the most? I would say Ce Ce Winans and Martha Munizzi

Your husband Taron Berry, and yourself are making a double impact in the Kingdom. How would you say the body of Christ benefits from your partnership? I believe people benefit from the songs we write. We always come together to pray and spend time with God. It's important that God guides and directs us in everything, including the songs we write. When people tell us the different songs that minister to them, I have to say thank you God for using us for your glory!!!

Here in Orlando, you have a local Pastor. How important is it to be covered when your ministry has become so public? It is very important to be covered by your local pastor. Pastor Zachery Tims and the entire New Destiny Christian Center Family have, and still are very supportive and are always praying for us. I am very thankful for our pastor and our church family.

With your increasing visibility on a national level, where is your focus now, and what can we expect of you in the future? My focus now is on several things. I am finishing my first inspirational studio project. I am very excited about this project. This project is very important to me because it shares my personal testimony of how I have overcome personal obstacles and struggles to believe in myself and my destiny. Taron and I wrote all the songs featuring the best producers in the Orlando area! The songs include "Moving Forward,” "Break the Addiction,” "You Can Make It,” "Never Alone,” "Beautifu,l" and more songs that will inspire and uplift people from all walks of life. The CD will be released on February 27, 2011 at my live praise & worship recording of "The Sound of A Worshiper" at New Destiny Christian Center. Proceeds from the CD sales will go to the Orlando Union Rescue Mission of Central Florida.

JOHNSON'S DINER

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN….SING?

Congratulations Charlene Coleman

A GOSPEL SINGING COMPETITION

T

he iconic, and literally historic downtown Johnson’s diner, frequented by many, has closed its doors for good. A soul food, community staple situated in the heart of the city since the 50’s has plated it’s last dish. Johnson’s originally opened circa 1955 as a sandwich shop in the Parramore community. With the passing of time, Mrs. Lillie Johnson and her husband Willie witnessed the evolution of the sandwich spot as it increasingly became a favorite of fans and families from all over. With national acclaim, transformation, and relocation, Johnson’s endured the trials of entrepreneurship; but eventually succumbed to the pressures of financial hardship. Amway Center construction and financial management are cited by the owners as two of the culprits responsible for the operation’s inability to bounce back in turbulent times. Johnson’s owners, the grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, and children of the former owner, the late Earlene Taylor; will be greatly missed for their presence of professionalism, compassion, and commitment to the downtown community. For the meals prepared with loving care, and the generosity extended to those who couldn’t quite pay their fare, THANK YOU for impacting and contributing to the life of our community. Like saying farewell to a friend who has long sustained, strengthened and satisfied many; Orlando bids best wishes and farewell to Johnson’s Diner.

he event, hosted by GodChild Records, was recently held @ Bible Teachers International Ministries, 2005 Johns Ave. Leesburg, FL. An invitation was sent out seeking anyone with the gift of the psalmist ministry. Ten contestants answered the call. In the first round, held on October 2, the contestants sang as a group and then displayed their God-given talents inside of a solo of their choice. That night, it was narrowed down to 5 finalists: Charlene Coleman, Chakiyra Lewis, Betty Gammage, Sharon Smith-Hooks and Andre Brown. The 5 finalists took the next week to perfect their performances and apply all of the advice and critiques that the judges had given them the week before. The finale of “So You Think You Can…Sing?” was held on October 9. The finalists were nervous, but they put all their trust in God; after all He is the one that gifted each and every one of them with the gift to sing. One by one they sang their hearts out. The competition was so anointed that during the judging segment, judges Miriam Benton, Sharon Wright and Helen Miller were left speechless. One judge told one of the finalists, “You have taken us to the throne room of Heaven.” But ultimately, only one person could win the grand prize of $1000 and the opportunity to record a single with GodChild records located in Leesburg, FL. The judges turned all of their score cards in and it was now the moment to announce the winner. The finalists stood on the stage, all praying that their name was called. Finally, Michael Thomas of GodChild Records, said, “And the winner is… Charlene Coleman!” Congratulations to Charlene Coleman of Praise Tabernacle in Umatilla, FL for winning the title and grand prize of “So You Think You Can….Sing?” Auditions for Part II of “So You Think You Can…Sing?” will be held December 4, 10:00 am at Bible Teachers International. Pastor David Uth of First Baptist Orlando

by Brandy Nikole

C

oming a long way from 19 years old serving as a pastor in a small church in Murfreesboro, Arkansas is a full story in itself. Taking a multitude of missionary trips to such places as Zambia, Honduras, Brazil, and Canada; later to take a permanent missionary trip to Orlando is enough for an entire separate interview. It only goes to show when God chooses a shepherd, he appropriately chooses their sheep. Pastor David Uth of First Baptist Orlando (one of the largest churches in the city) is blessed in moving people to follow in the way of Christ. His ministries are highly respected and devoted in the community. I get a chance to learn how a young man from Arkansas brings God into the lives of so many Orlando believers, and how Pastor David truly believes how important it is for the community and the church to go hand-in-hand. terrible situation. I felt like as the pastor, I got called in to level them. So I went in there, and I began to level them and they really helped me to learn so much for the three years that I served as pastor over there.

Pastor David Uth Did you always know you wanted to be a pastor? My journey started growing up at the home of a pastor. Later in college, God opened up a door for me to pastor at a little bitty church in western Arkansas in the fall of 1976. From that day, I’ve been a senior pastor all those years. I didn’t know as a teenager [or] as a college student that I was going to be pastor. I knew I was going to be doing something where I can somehow bless people and be a part of people’s lives…see God change people’s lives. I just didn’t know exactly where, until God opened that first door to me when I was 19 years old. Ever since then, God has confirmed over and over that’s what he wants me to do.

Describe that first opportunity with the church back in Arkansas.

32

It was to pastor over twenty one people. And what I didn’t know was there was a split in the church. It was a

How do you describe the growth of First Orlando Baptist? This church has a history of reaching people and being real effective in Orlando. Thankfully the Lord allowed me to step in and we continued to grow. One of the things we like to say to Orlando is we are a church for anybody. I don’t mean everybody; I know God puts people in different churches. I say [anybody] because there’s not anybody of any color, race, or economic condition that is not welcome. We just want to make sure that no matter the language they speak or where they come from, they feel at home and feel the love of Christ. We just feel that’s what the church is about; that’s the reflection of the body of Christ and what it’s going to be like one day in Heaven.

What are you ministries built upon? Our ministries are built around our vision statement. Our vision is to be a people who have a “Passion for God, Passion for People, Passion to Serve.” A passion for God is worship ministries. It’s helping people engage [in worship] in their personal life, and also corporately when they come

together. A passion for people is connecting people with people. Encouraging them to be in a small group where they can grow together. The passion to serve is where we really try to encourage every member of our church to be involved in serving. Whether it’s inside the walls or outside, we believe that there’s nothing more like Jesus than when you’re serving.

You’ve had some amazing events like “The Promisekeepers,” and also partnering up with neighboring churches to feed over 2000 families. Tell me a little more about that?

The way I’ve said it before is the bulk of the community is not “our church” or “that church;” its churches working together to bring hope to individuals that live in that community, and empower to lead the way and transform their community. It’s very hard to come from the outside in. Whenever Christ comes in our lives, he comes inside of us, he changes us. A change starts inside and works its way out. I think communities change that way. Change from the inside. Start with those that live there.

Yes, that was a part of our real desire to really bring hope to Orlando. And when the Southern Baptist Convention, the convention we are affiliated with, came into town, it was an effort on the part of a lot of us to really bring hope. We were able to do that through partnership. In October, we had “Acts of Love.” When we studied the book of James together, we saw they brought and shared their things with each other; met needs, and gave their possessions to the work of the Lord. We believe God wanted us to bring our possessions. We sold those possessions, and not only did we help those people by selling them, but we gave the money from the sales of our possessions to meet needs in our community.

I have a friend who attends your church and she mentioned to me about a memorable service one Sunday morning where you helped people find jobs and pay bills. Could I hear more about that day? One Sunday in church, we had people stand up that had a need and they came forward. We then prayed with them, and took their information. I brought them back to the worship service, and announced their needs. People got out of their seats and walked forward to meet a need. We did that with over 150 needs. It was just amazing! Those kinds of things have really helped continue with what I believe God is doing with our church. He is awakening us to what it means to be the body of Christ, and to love people like Christ loves people.

That is so wonderful. I’d like to hear your perspective on community empowerment. Do you believe the church can really change the community? If so, how do your ministries exercise this? Yes, I definitely believe in community empowerment.

In Loving Memory of “The Law and the Maestro

Dr. William Patrick Foster FAMU Marching “100” Founder

And the band plays on…at least The FAMU Marching “100” does. The August, 2010 passing of the band’s founder, Dr. William Patrick Foster, drew sentiments of deep regard and respect from around the nation. It was Foster who introduced at least 30 innovative techniques that helped to revolutionize and reshape perceptions of the collegiate marching band. These techniques have become standard operating procedures for many high school and collegiate marching band programs around the country. Dr. Foster’s goal upon becoming director of bands in 1946 at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University for Negroes was to have a 100-piece band. National and international acclaim followed Dr. Foster and the Marching “100,” landing them in films, commercials, magazines, newspapers and televised performances. Going from good to great, the game-changer redefined the band’s presentation, exhibiting unparalleled mastery and expression of up-tempo beats and energetic flair, characterized by the double-time marching step of 240 steps per minute or four steps per second, the triple-time marching step of 360 steps per minute, the death-slow cadence of 20 steps per minute or one step every three seconds, and memorization of all music played in stands, parades, pre-game and half-time shows. Under Dr. Foster’s leadership, the band has been the center of many opening ceremonies, including the Bastille Day Parade in Paris, France, Disney’s 15th and 25th Anniversary National Telecasts, and the Inaugural Parades of President Bill Clinton. Foster’s revolutionary creativity led to his induction in several halls of fame, as he molded the marching masterpiece, from 1946 to his retirement in 1989; leaving a legacy that “slides, slithers, swivels, rotates, shakes, rocks and rolls,” as Dr. Foster once put it. Long live “The Law and the Maestro.”

embers of the clergy often neglect their own personal needs and comfort in exchange for ensuring the needs of their parishioners are met. Congregations around the country position themselves each October to minister to, celebrate, and appreciate the pastor and pastoral families who work so diligently; in many cases without adequate compensation. It is this sacrificial, selfless, steadfastness that motivates congregants to rally behind their leaders, lifting their hands, while strengthening their hearts. The members of the Sanctuary of Praise in Orlando joined thousands of churches and ministries around the country to encourage and affirm their Pastor, Dr. Jonathan L. McKnight. I Timothy 5:17 reads “The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching." The motivation to honor leaders is more than a nice idea propagated by the pastor’s aid committee; instead, it is the instruction lifted from the Word of God.

Members, community friends, covenant partners, ministry protégés, and even elected officials joined the celebration at the Sanctuary, as words of exhortation were released into Pastor McKnight’s life by Pastor Derrick Hutchins of the New Life Church of Orlando COGIC, Pastor Terrance Gray of St. Mark AME, Ruling Elder James McKnight of Starke COGBF (Pastor McKnight’s eldest brother), Bishop Allen Wiggins of The Hope Church, Apostle Dannie Williams of Citadel of Hope in Leesburg, and Bishop Kelvin Cobaris. Gifts and Good News flowed throughout the week to simply say “Thank You” to Pastor McKnight for his diligence in delivering Truth in each sermon, and for fostering an atmosphere of faith to take God at His Word. GospelNow was there; and wishes not only Pastor McKnight, but all clergy and ministers, success in their assignments, and sustaining strength for their journey. www .G ospel Now. Net

SINGLE WOMEN’S CRY by Patricia J Helligar

Sitting at my breakfast nook

You should live and not die

And looking life over

To proclaim the works of the Lord

I said to myself No More Sheets

Here is the cry for the single men and women

I embraced all the women wrapped in sheets

Around the nation

On these hospital beds Women with issues

No more sheets is the cry But I can’t do it alone

In their tissues

If I but touch the hem of his garment

What can I do

I will be made whole

I am crying home alone

Here is the single women’s cry

This sister is rejected When will another sister hold her and Say Live your dreams

For the nation of singles We will live and not die to proclaim the works of the Lord
