I enjoyed eating out and having wine with my meals but I couldn’t get results when doing so and I’d feel guilty for enjoying myself, I wanted balance. I am about to share with you some key principals that changed my outlook on dieting and fitness forever and it’s these key factors that allow my clients to have a life without worrying about not getting results. Step 1: Track Your Calories There are many calorie calculators online you can use that will give you a great starting point. A Coach/Personal Trainer will be able to work these out for you on a more specific level, however lets just get you started first and foremost. Now it’s important to highlight that eating healthy nutritious food is very important and should still make up 80% of your diet. However tracking your calories and being more calorie aware of foods will allow you a mass amount of flexibility in your diet, meaning you can have things you might have previously deemed ‘bad’, like pasta, chocolate, and cheese, to name a few. It means you can still enjoy the foods you love, so long as you stay within your calorie target. It is worth bearing in mind though, the more junk you eat, the less likely you are to be full, so be mindful of your choices.
Years ago before I was a successful Personal Trainer I thought I was doing everything right, exercising a lot, eating fairly well but I wasn’t seeing results. Does this sound a bit like you? Do you enjoy socialising but always feel like you’re having to turn plans down when you are dieting? Then keep reading…
Step 2: Plan for Social Occasions If possible, go to a restaurant where you can still track your calories. Most big chain restaurants have the calories for their meals online, making staying on track easy. Save calories throughout the day and estimate your meal. In fact, OVER-estimate. That way you know you will have enough calories left that day to enjoy your meal without the guilt.
Step 3: How to Factor in Alcohol
Calories can be worked out across an entire week rather than daily. So if you know you are going to have a drink on Saturday night, save some calories throughout the week and bank them for your night out. If you can save 100-200 calories Sunday to Friday, that’s 600-1200 calories saved up that can be added to your Saturday night, enough for some beers and quite a lot of gin! This then means your weekly calorie consumption stays the same so you can continue getting results.
Top tip: opt for white spirits such as gin or vodka and diet mixers for lower calories.
Step 4: Calories: Track-Accommodate-Adjust
To keep progressing and to get even better results, you will need to know how to make changes to your plan as you go. You may need to adapt your diet to suit your lifestyle in order to get desired results.
