Living Proof interview with Donna Dixon Donna has experienced the worst kind of tragedy and heartbreak but somehow knew her experience could help prevent others from suffering in the same way she had, and in this interview she shares her story to help inspire others to reach out and help others too. Donna is a truly remarkable & inspiring lady! As I arrived at Donna’s home, she met me at the door and greeted me with such a warm welcome and gave me a big hug. For anyone who knows Donna, she’s always got a big smile on her face and has such a warm and friendly nature about her. But, it wasn’t only this that drew me to want to interview Donna for our ‘Living Proof’ feature - it was Donna’s journey throughout life that drew me to her. Despite the tragedy she has experienced, she still stands strong throughout it all and shows us how to find courage, even in our darkest of moments. She is brave, courageous and has an extra special quality that enables her to use the experiences she’s had in life to help and give back to others in so many ways.
The Interview What were you like growing up Donna? As a child, I was always very happy. I lived with my Nan and Grandad and was very lucky to be brought up in such a loving home. We didn’t have a lot of money, but that didn’t matter because I had such loving Grandparents who supported me, loved me dearly and I always felt like the apple of their eye. My grandparents took me everywhere as a child - I remember holidaying in Blackpool, going for days out on the bus with my

Nan to Seaton and I look back with fond memories. I lived with my Nan until I was 19 and until I met my first partner and we went on to have our first son, Keiran, in 1997. Keiran was born a whopping 9 lbs and was perfect in every way and, even though I was only a teenager myself, I felt so lucky to have a beautiful son.
When did you move out of your Nan’s house and how did you feel about moving out? Moving out of my Nan’s was hard as I’d always been there but it was natural for me to want my own house. Then, in 2001, I had a second child - another little boy, Harry. He was so beautiful. Shortly after having Harry, Harry’s Dad and I split up and I moved back to my Nan’s house. I had so much support from Nan and all my family were close by too. I loved living with my Nan as the estate she lived on was where I grew up, I had so many friends and family nearby who all looked out for one another. After living back at home with my Nan and the two boys, I got my own house, which was to be our home for the next 10 years and during this time my partner and I moved into this home together.
My partner and I went on to have another 2 beautiful children, Aliyah, now 9 and Faris, 7. At this point we still lived on the estate and, even though we were cramped in our little house, we loved it, but then one day we knew we had to move.
So what made you move house? At the time life was good, we were enjoying parenthood and had 4 children between us and we loved our little house. Then one day my life changed forever, it was 7th June 2012 and it was like any other Thursday. It was half term and my Mum was looking after the kids whilst I was at work. Then at 12pm I received a call from Harry and I wondered why he was calling, but I answered the call anyway and it seemed strange at first because I couldn’t hear Harry at the other end of the telephone. All I could hear was screaming and wailing and I knew it was my Mum’s voice and I stopped in my tracks, I immediately knew something was very wrong. I can remember the day like it was yesterday, it was a noise I’ll never ever forget. My Mum was saying over and over again, ‘Keiran has taken his life,’ and at first I couldn’t register what she was saying and then it registered what she had said and I just collapsed at work.

GOSSIP My colleagues immediately took me home and all I remember was running into the house and running up the stairs to his bedroom where he laid on the floor, there were paramedics all around him, working on him and I just remember being in shock, it was almost like a daze.
‘Keiran - Everyone’s friend’
I just remember having hold of his hands and praying he was going to be okay. We ended up in the hospital and I remember being paralysed with shock. We waited in the relative’s room whilst the Doctors tried to bring him back, they tried everything, but the wait felt like forever. After some time, the Doctor came into the relative’s room and said ‘I’m sorry, we tried everything we could, but I’m afraid there is nothing more we can do.’
I had a massive support network and my cousin didn’t leave my side. I can’t remember the first year, I was just numb and in shock still and all I remember that year were the firsts – the first birthday when he wasn’t here, my birthday – everything!
Keiran was 14 years old and gone too soon. They’d done everything they could and, looking back, they were never going to bring him back - he’d been gone too long by that point.
The first year was so hard, it was all the firsts that really got to me but, despite what happened, I knew I couldn’t go on and live a negative life. In the second year after Keiran had passed, I met a lady called Jessie Watkin through a mutual friend who was going through a similar thing to me. We helped each other and we became great friends and we helped one another with our loss.
How did you cope with everything and how did you manage with family life afterwards?
He was missing out on it all and it wasn’t fair. I visited the cemetery all the time and spent a lot of time there. I couldn’t face people but had to get on with life as I had 3 other children who needed me.
Keiran was 14 years old and gone too soon.
Kieran died on 7th June 2012, this was the day that changed my life forever and I knew things would never be the same. Even now, when I look back, I’ve got nothing but admiration for the staff. They were amazing and they worked on him for what felt like forever. I can’t really remember what happened afterwards but Keiran’s funeral was amazing and we gave him the send-off he deserved. All I remember in the days and weeks afterwards was being surrounded by lots of family and friends. We were astounded at the support that others gave us, even those who didn’t really know us, but everyone came together to support us and the money they gave us paid for the funeral and we bought a bench which resides next to Keiran’s grave.
How did you find the strength to move forward?
I knew I had to - I had 3 children who needed me and what happened with Keiran has taught me to be grateful for everything I’ve got.
We decided we wanted to help others in the local area and we set up our own charity ‘Mind you don’t forget!’ and together we’ve raised thousands of pounds to help other charities. We also got the support of a family friend, Glen Evans. We work together on this and make a great trio!
How did you find the strength to move forward?
We will always be forever grateful to these people and this community where I once grew up as they supported us in so many ways. I truly don’t think Keiran intended for this to happen, he seemed like he was loving life and was the most loving kid I’d ever met. He never caused any trouble and was everyone’s friend and that’s what we wrote on his headstone,
As a result of the work we’ve done, we’ve been nominated for many awards and we feel so honoured!
Donna this has been by far the most emotional interview we’ve ever done, thank you for being so open and honest about everything, you are truly amazing! Could I kindly ask you what’s been the biggest life lesson you’ve learned so far? That time is precious and tomorrow is never guaranteed! You have to be brave in life and no matter what life throws at you, you have to find courage from somewhere to live fully and give back in some way to help others.

My name is
Natalie Collins I have lived in Stokesley since 2004 and have dreamed of opening a chocolate shop on the High Street since completing my chocolatier training. I have met some wonderful customers over the past six years of selling my handmade products at farmer’s markets and food festivals across the North East, and they have been so supportive of the shop since it opened November 1st, 2016.
I first got into hairdressing around 8 years ago. I always felt throughout school that people didn’t think I was going to get anywhere and that I would be held back because of my dyslexia. I decided that I wanted to use my creativity and hands-on attitude to prove them wrong and give myself the opportunity I deserved. At the age of 15, I became a Saturday girl at Saks and gained vital experience and training up from a Saturday girl to a senior stylist. I was also a member of the creative arts team after going to an interview down in London while still a mere 17-year-old apprentice and I became the youngest member of the Saks creative arts team. I strived to prove to them that it was the right choice to make and started organising photo shoots in my own time, assisting backstage at events and showcasing my work in magazines and other publications. I made the decision to go freelance at the end of 2016 - I wanted to provide my own unique ideas, skills and experience without the trip to the salon which, in the busy world of today, can sometimes be a struggle for some clients. I have chosen to work with high-quality, well-known brands to provide a professional, salon quality experience in the comfort and convenience of a client’s own home. I really take pride in my work and want all my clients to have a pleasant and positive experience ending with a smile on their face. My advice to Gossip readers is to trust an experienced hairdresser who can give you the knowledge and products for amazing hair. I discovered through my hands-on approach and passion for what I do that you really do always get out what you put in. Dream, Believe, Achieve - I live my life by those three simple words.
My career path has certainly been varied to say the least. I’ve trained in media, and worked in TV & Radio, but my main focus has always been retail. I’ve spent many years selling everything from beauty products, to flowers, to jewellery, to candles, and homewares. I was even employed as a professional taste-tester, which gave me the chance to hone my palate, a skill I regularly use when developing new chocolate flavours for my customers. These experiences have all helped in some way in preparing me for opening my CHUNK Chocolates shop! My two absolute favourite things about what I do are meeting and interacting with customers, and getting to indulge in creativity. I love creating! It could be a new and surprising flavour combination, animal lollies, or an Easter egg shaped like a unicorn; being able to use my creative side on a daily basis is a real privilege. I am also very proud to always try and work with local producers as much as possible. I believe it is so important for local traders to support each other. And I am also very lucky to supply local businesses like Whinstone View in Great Ayton, Roots Farm Shop in East Rounton, and The Deli at No 85 in Skelton. I work with fine Belgian milk, white and dark chocolate. I also have a range of the darkest single origin for those who really love dark chocolate. You can also find dairy free, gluten free, palm free, and vegan selections in the shop. So whether it’s a gift for someone special, an indulgent treat for you, or a chocolate touch for your wedding or event, I hope to see you at the shop or one of the many markets and festivals you can find me at across the North East.

GOSSIP As a London lad, Dean started his playing days with Crystal Palace, making over 200 appearances before spending an eventful four years at Middlesbrough, then going on to play abroad in Cyprus and New Zealand. Dean has since returned to his adopted home in the North East where he now coaches, in the hopes his experience can inspire others to live their dream. “I always wanted to be a footballer as a kid” recalled Dean. “For as far back as I remember, it’s what I wanted to be.” It was clear from a young age Dean had a talent for the game but coming from a religious family, when it came to Sundays there was a bit of a problem.

“I had a team that wanted me to play Sunday league, but I thought there’s no chance when there’s church on a Sunday. However, I managed to convince my mum to let me play at least once a month. That got my foot in the door and it went from there.”

Gossip chats with former Middlesbrough defender Dean Gordon, as he reflects about his professional days and how he’s hoping to inspire the next generation of talent. 28

Dean went on to play for local and county teams Croydon and Newham before being spotted by a Tottenham Hotspur scout. As a 14-year-old, Dean was travelling across London for multiple teams a week on the evenings, which was far from ideal. So when he was offered a chance with his local team, Crystal Palace, he snatched it. “It was probably the best decision I made. I got my head down and focused on my football and made my debut by 18, was a regular by 20 and got myself into the England Under-21 team.” Dean was part of the young Palace team that won the First Division in the 1993-94 season that was captained by Gareth Southgate, who went on to captain and manage Middlesbrough before his current role as England manager. “The papers started talking about a move to Boro but there wasn’t anything in it. I like my fashion so I came up regularly to go to Psych. That summer I went to the World Cup in France as a fan and I went down in the hotel lobby one morning and there was Bryan Robson and Viv Anderson. I couldn’t believe it. A total coincidence I ran into them and a week later I signed for Middlesbrough. Destiny finds a way.” Dean joined a talented Middlesbrough team that included the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Gary Pallister, Andy Townsend, Gianluca Festa and Mark Schwarzer. In that time ,Middlesbrough became a steady Premier League club and Dean had some

GOSSIP memorable moments, including his stunning goal in the 3-2 win over Manchester United. Dean also scored in memorable fashions against Chelsea and Coventry; he started his youth career as a forward before becoming a full back so the strong left foot was always a staple of his repertoire. The 2001-02 season was a time of change for Middlesbrough as Steve McClaren took charge and it signalled the end of Dean’s Middlesbrough career as he was loaned to Cardiff and later released by the club. The following years saw Dean play for a number of clubs including Coventry and Reading before looking abroad. “There was a chance to play for APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus, and Chris Bart-Williams was there at the time too. Playing football in the summer - who wouldn’t want that?” Once his playing days came to an end, Dean wasn’t done with football and wanted to help others achieve what he had. Alongside Gary Bennett, he has worked on the Show Racism the Red Card campaign by going into schools and educating children about racism in a bid to end it. Coaching, too, was a natural progression for Dean and is what he now dedicates himself to, having set up ProMotiv8 and Back2Basics. “I was always positive and ambitious because I set the bar high for myself and if I can do it, others can. If I can help at least one kid make it then it’ll have all been worth it. A career in football is tough but there are great rewards. There’s so much pressure and sacrifices need to be made.” Millions are being poured into grassroots football in England but success has been limited; the issue is with the method of coaching in the country and that is what Dean aims to remedy. “There’s more money, more coaches, but we’re getting fewer players coming through and why is that?” Dean established fortnightly Futsal leagues in Sunderland and Newcastle; a game played on a smaller pitch and fewer players with rules designed for a fast-paced game with a weighted ball to keep it grounded. “Futsal is great; it’s so fast-paced that it raises your fitness levels and the way the game is set up means you improve your dribbling and passing. The speed of thought is improved massively as you have to act immediately and it’s so important for a player to learn improvisation – off the

I grew up with street football and that’s what happens in Spain and Brazil, there needs to be less adult involvement and let the kids actually play the game without all these structures and rules in place.” Outside of being a proponent of a different kind of grass-root technical coaching, Dean also helps nurture the mental side of the game. “It’s not just a physical sport, there’s a mental side to it on and off the pitch. You have to be intelligent while playing but also have mental strength to deal with the pressures of playing and to have the right attitude and focus on pushing yourself to succeed, which is what I want to pass on.” “I know the right people to get trials and opportunities as well, so alongside getting the opportunities, I now represent players as an agent to stay with them once they have been signed by a pro or semi-pro teams and I’ve had a few successes already.” The role-model Dean aims to be is no doubt encouraging for young players, to have someone there who has been there and done it to not only help your technical ability but also to continually nurture you promoting focus and continuity. Even outside of football, Dean is a big proponent of young people and, through Back2Basics, is offering a range of traineeships that cover customer service, business administration, employability and more. The 12-week vocational courses aim to get 16-to-18-year-olds back into work and/or education by leading to potential job interviews, Apprenticeships or Level 2/3 College Programmes. Dean Wilson was a huge support to us for organising the boxers and offering support to everyone involved. He had been scheduled to referee for us but unfortunately, work commitments meant he was unable to attend.
He didn’t leave us short, though, and arranged for Gary Jowers to take his place, who provided exceptional refereeing skills. The talented kids at Scorpio Kickboxing Gym took to the ring between bouts and gave us an exceptional demonstration. We saw excellent fights from men and women alike. Some were showcasing their skills, others were fighting for bragging rights. Some even fought more than once! They were all superb to watch and I think everyone in the audience was in agreement that they all worked their hardest. No one left disappointed as every competitor was presented with a JPC medal for taking part in our event, while Jake Osgood and Allan Haley put up such a battle in the main event that the judges awarded them with ‘Fight of the Night’. They each took home a JPC Trophy and split their prize winnings with ‘Fighter of the Night’ Basil 'the Boro Bomber' Al-Khabass who was exceptional to watch while winning both of his match-ups - such a showman!
Why were 16 men and women knocking 10 bells out of each other, you may ask? Well, they all came together to raise money for JPC Community Farm, which aims to establish supported living accommodation for young people in the local area. We want to offer residents an indoor and outdoor recreational area, trampoline/rebound therapy, and an equestrian arena for riding, horticultural therapy garden, café, day care, animal petting farm and hydrotherapy pool. The list is endless, however we are prioritising what is most needed first. The JPC Community Farm will be enriching and educating to the highest standard. We’ve had such success from our first ever boxing event that we are already planning our next - keep an eye out for more details.

i, we are Taylor and Ed, company directors of TNT Fitness. Ed loves to play football and supports Liverpool FC as well as keeping himself fit. Taylor plays guitar and writes songs, in between fixing things and cracking (terrible) jokes! Combined we have over 25 years worth of experience working in the fitness industry, and have worked with a range of ages and fitness levels, from children to pensioners, from amateur to professional, which isn’t bad considering we are both under 35!
We are both passionate about what we do, and about working with individuals; seeing the real benefits that can be gained from doing the right kind of exercise no matter what your background or age. There isn’t really a typical day at TNT because there isn’t a typical client. We have people who come to classes or to the gym for many different reasons; motivation, weight loss, strength, toning, mobility, flexibility, rehabilitation, social reasons, and to improve confidence. It’s a really social job and a thoroughly enjoyable one in a warm, welcoming environment with lots of laughs and smiles along the way. We worked together at Whitby Leisure Centre for the past 10 years and always half joked about setting up for ourselves. So we started running exercise classes in Guisborough in September 2013 from Sunnyfield House and St Nicholas Hall. This led to TNT Fitness growing and needing a permanent home. After viewing Stokelds old Toymaster building in Summer 2014, we knew that it was the building for us. Three months of non-stop building work (done mostly by ourselves), 20 hour days while
keeping classes running as well, saw us finally ready to open in Jan 2015. With a studio for classes and kids activities, 2 different gym areas, a soft play area, custom clothing shop, changing rooms with showers, lockers and a lounge area, we are now looking into expanding even further, working with other organisations and businesses and utilising the additional space that we have as well as outreach work with community groups such as the MS Society in Skelton. Our customers get results! Whether they are after a quick, fun workout or have a long term goal, the experienced staff really care about customers and their individual needs and strive to help them achieve it. We can also offer support and guidance, even if you don’t exercise at TNT. The environment we have created is laid back, relaxed, fun, innovative and exciting but the results are serious. Members and non-members get a sense of belonging and many wear our branded TNT Fitness Crew clothing with pride and really feel part of something - something positive.
