PLAYER TO WATCH Freshman wide receiver Tyrone Walker is coming off the best game of his young career at Illinois State. The Indianapolis, Ind., native caught four passes for 112 yards and touchdown in last week's loss at Southern Illinois. His touchdown was an 81yard strike from Matt Brown in the second quarter and was the second of his career.

THE GAME After splitting a two-game road trip at North Dakota State and No. 6 Southern Illinois, Illinois State returns to Hancock Stadium today to face off against Indiana State in its 90th Homecoming game. The Redbirds are 43-40-6 all-time in Homecoming games, including a 69-17 win in 2007 over the Sycamores that saw Geno Blow, Cortes Rice and Rafael Rice each rush for over 100 yards in the victory.

THE SERIES Illinois State leads the all-time series 30-28-2 and have won 10 out of the last 11 meetings against Indiana State. The Redbirds have outscored the Sycamores by a margin of 238-71 in the last four meetings between the two schools and have averaged nearly 60 points per game during the four-game winning streak.

THE COACHES Illinois State: Brock Spack (Purdue, 1983) is in his first season as the head coach of the Illinois State Redbirds (2-4). Prior to taking over the program at ISU, Spack spent 12 seasons as the defensive coordinator at Purdue, where he guided the Boilermakers to the top-ranked defense in the Big Ten Conference in 2002 and the 13th-best defense in the nation in 2003. He coached in 11 bowl games while at Purdue, including a Rose Bowl appearance in 2001. Indiana State: Trent Miles (Indiana State, 1987) is in his second year as the head coach at his alma mater (0-18). Prior to coming to Indiana State, Miles completed his third season as the Washington running backs coach in 2007, after having spent the previous three years on Tyrone Willingham’s staff at Notre Dame as the wide receivers coach.

THE PROGRAM Illinois State was home to the Missouri Valley Football Conference's Defensive Player of the Year each season from 2002-06. The Redbirds had at least one player selected in the NFL Draft each year from 2005-07. In each of the past four years, ISU student-athletes have contributed more than 2,000 hours of community service to the Bloomington-Normal area. Redbird student-athletes posted a school-record 3.13 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) during the spring 2009 semester.

GAME 7 • VS. INDIANA STATE • OCT. 17, 2009 THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT Indiana State University is located in Terre Haute, Ind., and has an enrollment of 10,457. The Sycamores compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and are members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Sycamores return 39 lettermen and 19 starters from last year's team that posted a 0-12 mark overall record and a 0-8 mark in MVFC play. Indiana State is led on offense by junior running back Darrius Gates, who is averaging four yards per carry on the season in 50 attempts. Senior defensive back Donye McCleskey paces the Sycamore defense with a total of 58 tackles on the season, 31 of which are solo stops. McCleskey has also added three tackles-for-loss, a sack and an interception in six games this season. The Sycamores currently hold the longest losing streak in the nation at 32 games. They have started the season 0-6, including a season-opening loss at home to Quincy in overtime and road losses at Louisville, South Dakota State and Northern Iowa. Indiana State is coming off a bye week, after suffering a 62-7 loss to No. 4 ranked Northern Iowa in the UNI Dome on Oct. 3. Quarterback Ryan Roberts started his second game of the season for the Sycamores, completing six passes for 60 yards and adding 21 yards on the ground. Antoine Brown totaled 10 rushes for 10 yards, while Bryant Kent led ISU's receivers with a pair of catches for 35 yards.

TIES WITH THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT Edmund Jones, the father of Illinois State junior cornerback E.J. Jones, was a former assistant coach at Indiana State during the 2008 season. The elder Jones master’s degree in physical education from Missouri Valley Football Conference member Western Illinois. Indiana State head coach Trent Miles played for the Sycamores from 1983-86. During that time, Illinois State posted a 3-1 record against Indiana State with the only loss coming in 1984. Illinois State assistant coach Luke Huard was a member of the Washington coaching staff with Indiana State head coach Trent Miles. Huard spent two years on the Huskies' staff working with the quarterbacks in 2007-08, while Miles worked as the running backs coach from 2005-07. Illinois State's Nick Broome (Columbus), Jayme Comer (Brownsburg), Drew Kiel (Columbus), Matt Lancaster (West Lafayette), Corey Shandrick (West Lafayette), Tyrone Walker (Indianapolis) and Mike Wood (Greenwood) all hail from the state of Indiana. Illinois State assistant media relations director Mike Williams worked for two years at Indiana State, after earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Illinois State while working in the Redbird Athletics Media Relations Office.

A CASE OF DEJA VU For the second consecutive week, Illinois State senior wide out Eyad Salem grabbed a career-best and school-record-tying 14 receptions in Illinois State’s 43-23 loss at Southern Illinois. The Elgin, Ill. native had 114 yards receiving and caught a touchdown pass from Redbird quarterback Matt Brown. Salem caught 14 passes in Illinois State’s 27-24 win at North Dakota State during the previous week. Both efforts tied Laurent Robinson and Dwayne Smith at the top of Illinois State’s single game receptions chart and is the second-most in a MFVC football game behind UNI’s Eddie Galles (16 vs. SIU in 2003). Salem is the Redbirds’ reception leader with 52 grabs this season.

THE KID CAN PLAY Illinois State true freshman wide receiver Tyrone Walker posted the first 100-yard receiving game of his career against Southern Illinois. Walker was the Redbirds’ second leading receiver in both receptions and yards as the Indianapolis, Ind., native caught four balls for 112 yards. Illinois State quarterback Matt Brown connected with Walker for an 81-yard strike in the second quarter, the longest play of either players’ career. Walker has 22 receptions for 300 yards and two scores on the season. He’s averaging 13.6 yards per catch.

(INSERT NAME HERE) WITH A CATCH Despite completing a combined 28 passes to Eyad Salem in the last two games, Illinois State redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Brown has been quite judicious when it comes to spreading the ball around. Brown connected with 10 different receivers in Saturday’s game at Southern Illinois and it yielded a careerbest 321 yards through the air. Brown hit both Redbird running backs, two tight ends and six different wide outs against the Salukis. Brown has completed passes to nine different receivers twice, with a season-low of seven receivers completed to. The Marion, Ill. native is averaging 25.2 completions in his five career starts.

Illinois State had 10 different receivers catch a pass in Saturday’s game with the Salukis from redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Brown, the first time the Redbirds have had double-digit receivers since Sept. 10, 2005. Former Redbird signal caller Luke Drone completed 24 passes to 10 different receivers in the 56-19 win over Drake and passed for 344 yards in the contest. Laurent Robinson led the Redbirds with nine catches for 163 yards and three touchdowns in that game.

PICKED OFF The Redbird secondary has been much improved during the 2009 season, logging an interception in five of Illinois State’s six contests. The secondary has intercepted eight passes, more than double last season’s total (3). Junior cornerback E.J. Jones leads the team with three interceptions and senior cornerback Chris Garrett has two, including one for a touchdown. Junior safety Kelvyn Hemphill joined the fray with an interception on a desperation pass by Chris Dieker, just before halftime of last week’s game at Southern Illinois.

AMONG THE BEST IN THE NATION Illinois State’s passing attack is one of the best in the nation. The Redbirds averaged 266.0 yards passing in the first six games, which ranks as the No. 13 total in the nation. After turning in back-to-back 14 catch performances, Eyad Salem is also near the top of the receptions per game leader board. Salem is second behind Fordham’s Terrell Hudgins (10.83), with 8.67 catches per game. Salem’s 87.5 receiving yards per game is the 16th-best tally in the nation.

CAN YOU SPARE A DIME? Illinois State started six cornerbacks against Southern Illinois on Saturday. The Redbirds have used the nickel, a five defensive back formation in several games, but started six for the first time this season against the Salukis. Chris Garrett and Johntel Franklin started at corner for the Redbirds with Casey Kociuba as the nickel back and Otis Merrill as the dime back. Jermaine Malcolm and Kelvyn Hemphill also started as safeties.

ABOUT MR. BROWN Illinois State quarterback Matt Brown threw for a career-best 321 yards in a personal homecoming game at Southern Illinois last Saturday. The Marion, Ill. native has topped 300 yards in back-to-back games after passing for 320 in the Redbirds road win at North Dakota State (Oct. 3). Brown, a redshirt freshman, has three games with over 300 yards passing in the first five starts of his career. The mark ties Kevin Glenn for the second-most games over 300 yards passing in a single-season. Glenn accomplished the feat twice, first in 1997 and then again in 1998. With five games left in the regular season, its conceivable that Brown could reach Luke Drone’s mark of five games over 300 yards, set in 2005.

GREAT START AND FINISH Illinois State quarterback Matt Brown had quite the opening act during Saturday’s 27-24 win at North Dakota State. Brown completed 20-of-23 passes for 213 yards and two scores before halftime. He continued to perform well after the intermission en route to a career-best 30-of-42 passes completed and a career-high 320 yards. Brown saved his best for the Redbirds’ last drive of the game when he completed 3-of-4 passes and scrambled for 20 yards while leading an eight-play, 68-yard scoring drive to put Illinois State on top for good. Brown’s 320 yards are the most by a Redbird quarterback since Luke Drone threw for 342 against Drake in 2005.

Eyad Salem

Redbird senior wide receiver Eyad Salem hauled in a career-best and school-record-tying 14 receptions in Illinois State’s 27-24 win over North Dakota State Saturday. Salem tied Laurent Robinson and Dwayne Smith at the top of Illinois State’s single game receptions chart. The mark ties four others for third-most catches in a game in Valley history, and second-most in a MFVC football game behind UNI’s Eddie Galles (16 vs. SIU in 2003). Salem also finished the game with 172 yards receiving. Through five games, Salem is the Redbirds reception leader with 38 grabs on the season.

PUNTING WITH AUTHORITY Senior punter Kevin Mazur has had two of his best games as the ISU punter in his last two. Against Southern Illinois (Oct. 10), Mazur punted four times for an average of 45.2 yards per kick including a career-long 51-yarder. Those numbers bested his previous career marks of 41.8 yards per punt and a long of 49 yards in the victory at North Dakota State (Oct. 3) that earned him MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. On the season, Mazur has punted 27 times and is averaging 38.7 yards per kick.

INDIANA STATE • OCT. 17, 2009 THREE FOR THREE Senior placekicker Zach Kutch set a new career high by going 3-for-3 in field goal attempts in Illinois State’s loss at No. 6 Southern Illinois (Oct. 10). The trio of field goals bested his previous high of two made in a game, which he achieved at Illinois (Sept. 12) and at North Dakota State (Oct. 3). Kutch booted a 25-yarder in the first quarter, connected from 33 yards in the second quarter and tied the game at 23-23 early in the third quarter with another 33-yard boot. Kutch is now 8-for-12 in field goal attempts on the season and has made his last five tries overall.

THE CERTIFICATE IS IN THE MAIL Eyad Salem tied a school record with 14 catches, including three on Illinois State's final scoring drive, and Kevin Mazur averaged nearly 42 yards per punt as the Redbirds outlasted North Dakota State, 27-24, to win their first Missouri Valley Conference game in the Fargodome (Oct. 3). For their performances, Salem and Mazur were named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, by the league office (Oct. 4). The award for Salem, a 2008 All-Valley Football FirstTeam selection and 2009 Preseason All-Valley pick, was the first of his career at Illinois State. The honor was the second for Mazur, who won the league's special team honor for the weekend of Sept. 9, 2006, when he was the ISU placekicker. It was the third weekly honor of the year for the Redbirds, as running back Cliffton Gordon earned Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 20).

FANTASTIC FROSH Illinois State true freshman wide outs Ben Ericksen and Tyrone Walker combined for nine catches and 86 yards against North Dakota State (Oct. 3). Ericksen caught the first five passes of his career, in his first collegiate appearance, for 26 total yards. Walker had the second-most yards for the Redbirds with 60 on four catches. Walker is third on the team with 18 receptions through five games and second with 188 yards.

GETTING THE BALL IN THE RIGHT HANDS For the first time in 2009, Illinois State did not turn the ball over on offense at North Dakota State. Redbird quarterback Matt Brown attempted 43 passes – the second-highest amount this season – but didn’t throw an interception. Brown and Drew Kiel combined on 30 attempts without an interception in the seasonopener at Eastern Illinois (Sept. 3), but the Redbirds coughed up the ball on a fumble against the Panthers. Brown, Geno Blow and Cliffton Gordon ran the ball 30 times without a fumble against the Bison on Saturday.

SO CLOSE Illinois State safety Jermaine Malcolm and defensive lineman Eric Brunner are kicking themselves after letting passes hit them in the hands, but fall to the turf at North Dakota State. Both were credited with pass breakups, but failed to help the Redbirds keep their streak of games with an interception alive. The Redbirds failed to pick off an opponent pass for the first time in 2009. Illinois State had picked off at least one pass in each of the four previous games, including a season-high four thefts against Austin Peay.

GENERAL NOTES • PAGE 5 FIRST-YEAR REDBIRD COACHES Jim Heacock, 1988 Heacock and ISU posted a 1-10 record in his first season at the helm of the program in 1988, with the lone win coming against Missouri-Rolla on Homecoming. After that first season, the Redbirds won at least five games in the next seven years as Heacock finished with a 37-49-2 overall record in eight seasons in Normal. Todd Berry, 1996 Berry took over the team in 1996 and struggled out of the gate with two 2-9 campaigns. However, in 1999 he got his team turned around and the Redbirds earned their first-ever playoff berth after an 8-3 regular season record and a 4-2 conference mark. The 'Birds lost in the first round of the playoffs in '98, but came right back with a 9-2 regular-season mark in 1999 that earned them a conference title and another trip to the playoffs. This time, ISU advanced to the semi-finals before being defeated by the eventual national champion Georgia Southern. In four years at the helm, Berry posted a 24-24 record. Denver Johnson, 2000 Johnson inherited a team coming off a semi-finals appearance in 1999 and led the team to a 7-4 finish in his first season at the helm. The Redbirds opened the season with a 75-10 thrashing of West Virginia Tech at Hancock Stadium, but then suffered four-straight defeats. The team rallied in conference play and won six straight to end the year and just miss out on a second consecutive playoff berth. In eight years under Johnson, ISU went 45-46 and advanced to the playoffs p y in 2006 with an 8-3 regular-season record. Brock Spack, 2009 Spack fell to 2-4 in his first season at the helm after a 43-23 defeat at the hands of No. 6 Southern Illinois last Saturday in Carbondale, Ill.

Illinois State rumbled for a season-best 436 yards against the Bison - motor-clichés aside, a pretty impressive performance. Matt Brown threw for a career-best 320 yards, his second game over the 300-yard mark, and three Redbirds combined to rush for 116 yards. It was the first time Illinois State has surpassed 400 yards of total offense this season, despite coming close with its previous season-best 398 at FBS and Big Ten opponent Illinois.

GOING FOR IT When faced with a decision to go for it or punt on fourth down, Illinois State head coach Brock Spack has shown a confidence in leaving his offense on the field. The Redbirds have 10 fourth down attempts through six games, five times the amount of their opponents. Don’t look for that to change however as the Birds have converted on five of those attempts, a 50 percent rate. Illinois State’s opponents are 1-for-4 (25 percent) on fourth down tries.

PICK SIX Illinois State senior cornerback Chris Garrett nabbed his second career interception in Saturday’s loss to South Dakota State and turned it into his first career touchdown. The 30-yard interception return for a touchdown was the Redbirds’ first defensive touchdown since Jesse Caesar’s 45-yard interception return in the playoffs at Eastern Illinois in 2006. The Redbirds have intercepted a pass in all four games this season and have seven picks as a team.

COMING THROUGH IN THE ‘KUTCH’ Senior place kicker Zach Kutch set a new career long with a 48-yard field goal in the third quarter of Illinois State’s 38-7 win over Austin Peay (Sept. 19). Kutch set his previous career high the week before – a 45-yarder at Illinois (Sept. 12). Kutch is now 8-for-12 on field goal tries in 2009 and is 11-for-16 (.688) on field goal tries in two seasons as a Redbird after transferring from Auburn.

CLIFF’S NOTES Illinois State sophomore running back Cliffton Gordon ran for the first touchdown of his career in the Redbirds 38-7 win over Austin Peay (Sept. 19), but he didn’t stop there. Gordon added three more scores to tie the Hancock Stadium record with four total rushing touchdowns. Gordon rushed for 96 yards on 17 carries, both also career highs. Gordon's four touchdowns on the ground were the most by an ISU back since 2005, when Brian Thompson rushed for four scores in an upset win over No. 1 ranked Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. The quartet of touchdowns rank as the third-best performance in a game by a Redbird runner in school history.

After rushing for four touchdowns and nearly 100 yards against Austin Peay (Sept. 19), Cliffton Gordon was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The Chicago Heights, Ill., native rushed for 96 yards on 17 carries and rambled for four touchdowns against the Governors in the home-opening win for the Redbirds. The award is the first for a Redbird player this season and the first for Gordon in his career.

TAKEAWAY ARTISTS Illinois State picked off four passes in its 38-7 win over Austin Peay (Sept. 19). The single game total surpassed the entire 2008 season mark, when the Redbirds intercepted just three passes. ISU now has six picks through three games, led by E.J. Jones’ three interceptions. The three picks are the first of the junior cornerback’s career. This year’s Redbirds are coached by an entirely new defensive staff including defensive coordinator Phil Elmassian who combines with defensive backs coach Lamar Conard to lead the secondary. Elmassian brings more than 35 years of coaching experience to the Redbird sidelines.

More than likely, it’s Illinois State’s new spread offense, as the Redbirds completed passes to seven different receivers at Eastern Illinois (Sept. 3). In each of the first two contests the top-three targets each snagged rece five or o more passes. The Redbirds completed passes to seven or more different receivers three times but never had an equal distribution at the top. The last time Illinois State completed five or last season, s more passes to three different receivers in a single game was Oct. 29, 2005 against Western Illinois m in Hancock Stadium. In that game, Jason Horton and Laurent Robinson each had six catches and Pierre Jackson had five. P

BLOW-ING PAST THE REST Illinois State’s Geno Blow is in his final season with the Redbirds. Blow heads into his final season as the featured running back, after previously sharing time in a multiple back system in his previous three seasons. However, he has put up some impressive numbers in his time at ISU He currently ranks 11th on the all-time rushing yards list at Illinois State with 1,908 yards. With 386 career carries, he ranks 11th place all-time just 10 carries behind Milt Kadlec in 10th (396). In three seasons, he has scored 16 rushing touchdowns, which ties him for ninth all-time with Quincy Washington (2001-02). His 4.94 average yards per rush mark ranks him 10th on the all-time list. His 63.6 yards per game place him ninth on the all-time list.

INDIANA STATE • OCT. 17, 2009 THE FIRST OF MANY True freshman wide receiver Tyrone Walker caught the first touchdown of his career in the first quarter of Illinois State's 38-7 win over Austin Peay (Sept. 19). The eight-yard connection from Matt Brown gave the Redbirds a 7-0 advantage over the Governors and also gave ISU its first lead of the season overall.

IN THE RED ZONE The Redbirds have made 20 trips to the red zone in six games and have converted on 17 of those trips for an 85 percent success rate. Only four of those scores has come off the foot of placekicker Zach Kutch, while the other 13 have been touchdowns by the Redbird offense.

TOUCHDOWN SAVERS The Illinois State secondary helped keep points off the board with interceptions in the end zone in back-toback games to start the season. Junior cornerback EJ Jones saved a touchdown with an interception at Eastern Illinois (Sept. 3) and senior corner back Chris Garrett ran under an errant Eddie McGee pass in the end zone at Illinois (Sept. 12). The interceptions were the first of each player’s career.

NOT BAD FOR A FIRST TIMER Despite being the first Redbird signal caller since 1999 to start as a freshman, Matt Brown completed 27-of-45 pass attempts and threw for 312 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Illinois State’s 45-17 loss to Illinois. Brown’s mark was the first over 300 for an Illinois State quarterback since Luke Drone threw for 305 yards against Missouri State, Nov. 4, 2006, and the most passing yards since Drone torched Indiana State for 440 yards Nov. 12, 2005.

HEMPHILL’S SAFETY NET Kelvyn Hemphill, a 2008 All-Missouri Valley Football Conference Honorable Mention selection, didn’t make a tackle in Illinois State’s season-opening loss to Eastern Illinois, but the junior safety recorded a team-best 14 tackles against Illinois. Hemphill proved to be a pest to Illinois’ Eddie McGee, bringing down the quarterback twice in the backfield for both his tackles-for-loss. Hemphill sacked McGee for an eightyard loss on third down to force a field goal in the second quarter and dropped McGee behind the line on a run play during the next drive.

KIEL’S COMPLETE EFFORT Illinois State quarterback Drew Kiel completed his first 15 pass attempts en route to a 20-for-22 effort fort in the season opening loss at Eastern Illinois (Sept. 3). Kiel’s .909 percent completion percentage wass the best ever by a Redbird quarterback in a single game with more than 20 attempts. The mark surpassed sed Dusty Burk’s 31-of-37 effort against Hofstra (Dec. 4) in the quarterfinals of the 1999 FCS Playoffs.. The 15 consecutive pass completions tied Youngstown State’s Tom Zetts (vs. WKU in 2004) for the fifth-longest ngest streak all-time by a Valley quarterback.

KIEL OUT AT LEAST SIX WEEKS AFTER SURGERY Sophomore quarterback Drew Kiel had surgery to repair a torn ligament on his right thumb Wednesday, Sept. 9. Recovery time will be at least six weeks for the Redbird signal-caller. An MRI done after the Eastern Illinois game revealed a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in the thumb on Kiel's throwing hand. The Columbus, Ind., native suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of ISU's season-opening loss at Eastern Illinois on Sept. 3.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS The injury to Drew Kiel presents an obvious challenge for the Redbirds, but it also presents a tremendous opportunity for redshirt freshman Matt Brown. Prior Brown’s start at Illinois (Sept. 12), the Redbirds hadn’t started a freshman quarterback since the 1999 season when Dusty Burk took over for injured starter Kevin Glenn. Burk earned Valley freshman of the year honors after leading Illinois State to the conference title, then the Redbirds’ first playoff and road playoff wins. Burk’s Cinderella story ended in the semi-final round of the playoffs when the Redbirds fell to eventual national champion Georgia Southern. Will the slipper fit for Brown?

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Illinois State quarterback Drew Kiel was nearly perfect, completing 20-of-22 passes, but the effort wasn't enough to keep pace with Eastern Illinois in a 31-6 season-opening loss at O'Brien Field. Kiel, who started the game with 15 consecutive completions, threw for 140 yards and connected with Ben Graves for a score in the fourth quarter - the Redbirds' lone tally of the contest. On the other side, Jake Christensen threw three touchdown passes in his Eastern Illinois' debut and the Panthers used a varied ground attack to outgain the Redbirds 384-186 in total yards. Geno Blow was the Redbirds top rusher with 13 carries for 37 yards as the Panthers limited the Illinois State ground game to 20 total yards. Kiel connected with seven different receivers in the game, most frequently with Casey Cline, who finished with six catches for 69 yards. Graves and Eyad Salem each had five catches in the loss. Jermaine Malcolm led the Redbirds defensively with a career-high 10 tackles. Kiel finished the first half 10-for-10 and moved the Redbirds into Eastern territory on the team's first two drives of the game, but a botched field goal attempt and a lost fumble left ISU with nothing to show for the effort. Illinois State's defense stopped the Panthers on their first two drives, but a six-yard run by Mon Williams gave Eastern Illinois a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. Illinois State cornerback E.J. Jones picked off Christensen in the end zone for his first career interception, but EIU went up 14-0 after Christensen hit Jimmy Potempa with 14 seconds left in the first half. Christensen and the Panthers pushed the lead to 21-0 with another strike to early in the third quarter. Kiel threw his first incomplete pass deep inside Panther territory after 15 attempts, but later put Illinois State in the end zone with a three-yard toss to Graves. The extra point failed after another snap mishap. Eastern Illinois added another touchdown at the beginning of the fourth and kicked a field goal to reach the final score. Williams finished with 87 yards on the ground for the Panthers and Chavon Walker carried 10 times for 68 yards. The Panthers rushed for 217 yards as a team.

NORMAL, Ill. - Head coach Brock Spack recorded his first victory as leader of the Redbird football team and sophomore running back Cliffton Gordon rushed for his first career touchdown - then his second, third and fourth as Illinois State defeated Austin Peay, 38-7, in front of 10,158 at Hancock Stadium. Gordon led the Redbird (1-2) rushing attack as he racked up 98 yards on 17 carries and a career-high four scores. Illinois State's defense posted its best performance of the young season. The Redbird defense recorded six take-aways - four interceptions and two fumble recoveries - and held Austin Peay (1-2) to just 109 total yards. Junior cornerback E.J. Jones picked-off two interceptions to give him three on the season. On their second drive of the game, the Redbirds converted on two fourth down conversions that led to the first score of the game. Matt Brown found freshman wide receiver Tyrone Walker for an eight yard touchdown pass. The touchdown was Walker's first of his career as the `Birds jumped out to an early 7-0 lead at the 4:20 mark of the first quarter. In the second quarter, a pass interference call in the end zone against the Governors set up a two-yard touchdown run by Gordon which was the first of his career. After a 24-yard touchdown run by Ryan White cut the ISU lead to 14-7, Brown led offense on a 9-play, 84-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a nine-yard touchdown run by Gordon, his second of the game. The Redbird defense took over the third quarter. Senior linebacker Kyle Siskowic recorded the first interception of his career and Jones picked off his second interception of the season. Later, junior Jermaine Malcolm grabbed his first interception of his collegiate career. On the ensuing drive, Gordon recorded his third touchdown of the game on an eight-yard run to run the Redbird lead to 28-7 at the 4:43 mark. The ISU defense held on a fourth and one to lead to a 48-yard field goal by senior Zach Kutch, to push the Redbird lead to 31-7 with 4.1 seconds remaining in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, another take away by the Redbird defense via fumble led to a five-yard touchdown run by Gordon, his fourth of the game.

GAME SUMMARY Gordon, Defense Lead ISU To 38-7 Win Over APSU

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Matt Brown used his first collegiate start to post Illinois State's first 300yard passing performance since 2006, but the aerial attack was overshadowed by 384 yards on the ground as Illinois ran past the Redbirds, 45-17, at Memorial Stadium Saturday night. Brown, a redshirt freshman starting in place of the injured Drew Kiel, completed 27-of-47 passes for 312 yards and two scores - both to Eyad Salem. The mark was the first over 300 for an Illinois State (0-2) quarterback since Luke Drone threw for 305 yards against Missouri State, Nov. 4, 2006. Salem was one of nine Redbirds to catch a pass in the game and finished with a team-best seven catches for 103 yards. Illinois (1-1) didn't waste any time moving the football on the ground as quarterback Juice Williams scrambled 49 yards on the Fighting Illini's first offensive play from scrimmage. Williams was lost for the game with a strained quadriceps muscle after the play, but it set-up a one-yard touchdown run by Jason Ford, led all rushers with 137 yards, to give the Illini a 7-0 lead. Illinois continued to run the ball with Eddie McGee guiding the offense under center and collected 136 yards on the ground while building a 24-0 lead by halftime. The Fighting Illini made it 31-0 with a 24-yard run by Daniel Dufrene early in the third quarter. The Redbirds finally got on the board in the third quarter when Brown found Salem his first touchdown, a three-yard strike. That play was set-up by a 41-yard pass from Brown to Illinois State running back Geno Blow, who was wide open coming out of the backfield. Illinois State added a 45-yard field goal by Zach Kutch later in the quarter to make it 31-10. Brown found Salem again in the fourth quarter before leaving the game for freshman Matt Lancaster. Defensively, Illinois State was led by Kelvyn Hemphill's 14 tackles. Redbird cornerback Chris Garrett notched his first career interception in the first half when he picked off McGee in the end zone.

NORMAL, Ill. - Chris Garrett scored Illinois State's first defensive touchdown since 2006, but it wasn't enough as the No. 17 Jackrabbits marched into Hancock Stadium and handed the Redbirds their first home and conference loss of the season, 38-17. ISU senior running back Geno Blow led the Redbirds' (1-3, 0-1 MVFC) rushing attack with 58 yards on 17 carries. Redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Brown was 17-for-32 for 184 yards with two interceptions in his third consecutive start. Senior Eyad Salem led the ISU receivers with six catches for 66 yards. On their first drive of the game, South Dakota State (3-0, 2-0 MVFC) quarterback Ryan Crawford completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Saunders Montague. The touchdown capped off a six-play, 43-yard scoring-drive and gave the Jackrabbits an early 7-0 lead. The score remained 7-0 until the second quarter, when Illinois State senior kicker Zach Kutch connected on a 42-yard field-goal to cut the SDSU lead to 7-3 with 12:26 left in the first half. On the ensuing SDSU drive, Garrett intercepted a Crawford pass and returned it 30 yards to post the `Birds' first defensive touchdown in three years. That gave Illinois State a 10-7 lead with 10:47 left in the half and put the Jackrabbits behind for the first time all season. Just before halftime, an interception by SDSU defensive lineman Jake Steffen set-up a 62-yard touchdown pass from Crawford to wide receiver Glen Fox to send South Dakota State into the locker room with a 21-10 lead. A 23-yard field goal by SDSU kicker Peter Reifenrath pushed the Jackrabbits lead to 24-10 at the 10:37 mark of the third quarter. Later in the half, Crawford ran for a 7-yard touchdown to complete a four-play, 31-yard drive. The score ran the Jackrabbits lead up to 31-10. In the fourth quarter, SDSU running back Kyle Minett ran a 64-yard touchdown to drive the Jackrabbits lead to 38-10. With 9.9 seconds left in the game, ISU freshman quarterback Matt Lancaster scored his first touchdown of the season on a seven-yard run.

FARGO, N.D. - Eyad Salem tied a school record with 14 catches, including three on Illinois State's final scoring drive, as the Redbirds outlasted North Dakota State, 27-24, to win their first Missouri Valley Conference game in the Fargodome Saturday. Salem caught a career-high 14 passes to tie former Redbirds Laurent Robinson and Dwayne Smith for the most catches in a single game. Salem was one of eight Redbirds to catch a pass from Illinois State (2-3, 1-1 MVFC) quarterback Matt Brown and led all receivers with 172 yards. Brown completed 30-of-42 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns. On the final drive, Brown hit Salem over the middle for 14 yards and a critical third down conversion while moving the Redbirds into Bison territory. Brown found Salem on the next two plays before scrambling for 20 yards to set up a first-and-goal for Illinois State. Geno Blow blasted through the right side of the defense from two yards out to put the `Birds up 27-24 with 1:24 remaining. North Dakota State (1-4, 0-2 MVFC) attempted a final drive but a personal foul penalty negated a play that would have put the Bison with a first and goal from the nine with a little more than 30 seconds remaining. Instead, the Bison were pushed back to the 50-yardline and eventually attempted a deep pass on fourth down that was batted down. Brown picked apart the Bison secondary en route to both of his touchdown passes in the first half - a 17-yard strike to Salem and a seven-yard flip to Cliffton Gordon. Illinois State's first points came on a 38-yard field goal from Zach Kutch, his first of two in the game. Brown had 219 yards at the break and helped the Redbirds pile up 282 yards on 42 plays before the break. Illinois State's defense was equally stout in the opening half, allowing just seven points. The Birds held the nation's leading rusher, Pat Paschall, to 29 yards and limited the Bison to 185 yards of total offense. More than half of that total came on a 95-yard strike from Nick Mertens to Gary Williams - the longest touchdown pass in NDSU history.

GAME SUMMARY No. 6 Salukis Wear Down Redbirds, 43-23 CARBONDALE, Ill. - Illinois State wide receiver Eyad Salem turned in another schoolrecord tying performance with 14 catches, but his effort was trumped by a career day from Southern Illinois running back Deji Karim as the No. 6 Salukis dashed to a 43-23 win at McAndrew Stadium. For the second consecutive week, Salem hauled in 14 passes to tie former Redbirds Laurent Robinson and Dwayne Smith for the most catches in a single game, but it was Karim's own career-best 273 yards that propelled the Salukis (4-1, 3-0 MVFC) to the Missouri Valley Conference and homecoming day win. Salem finished with 114 yards and caught half of Illinois State (2-4, 1-2 MVFC) quarterback Matt Brown's 28 completions. Brown, a native of nearby Marion, Ill., threw for a career-best 321 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. ISU freshman receiver Tyrone Walker caught four passes and also surpassed the century mark with 112 yards. Karim scored twice in the first quarter and helped Southern Illinois to an early 16-3 lead. Illinois State answered with its own long play, an 81-yard strike from Brown to Walker. The Redbirds added a field goal by Zach Kutch, the second of three he hit in the game, to cut the SIU lead to three, and both teams traded touchdowns in the final minute of the first half en route to a 23-20 score at the break. Illinois State turned in its best defensive performance in the third quarter, when the Redbirds held the Salukis to 68 yards and tied the game after a 33yard field goal by Kutch with 9:52 left in the quarter. Southern Illinois answered with a field goal of their own at the 7:12 mark and proved too much to contain while rolling up 17 more points in the fourth frame.
