The Indiana State Sycamores With last weekend’s 17-14 victory over Western Illinois in Terre Haute, Ind., the Sycamores ended what was the nations longest losing streak of 33 games. Indiana State had lost its first seven games of the year by an average of 28.3 points, but gave up a seasonlow 14 points to beat the Leathernecks. Indiana State has been shut out three times this season and have scored 10 points or less in 5-of-8 games this year. The Sycamores average just 177.6 yards of total offense a game and allow 385.8 from their opponents. Sophomore Ryan Roberts serves as Indiana State’s multi-purpose man. He is their leading rusher who has scored four of ISU’s six rushing touchdowns and is its leading passer with 38.5 yards a game. The Sycamores have used three different quarterbacks, but all three of them have not completed more than 48 percent of their passes. As a team the Sycamores are last in the conference in eight offensive categories. They only convert 25 percent of their third down attempts and are going up against the Saluki defense that in the past two games has only allowed its opponent to con2009 Indiana State Schedule vert 7-of-26 third down attempts. SIU and Indiana State - The Series After Indiana State won nine-straight games over the Salukis from 1994-02, SIU countered by winning the last six in the series in big fashion. Southern Illinois won the last six games between the two schools by a 43.5 average margin of victory and the closest game was in 2005 when the Dawgs won 42-20 in Terre Haute. Indiana State does lead the overall series, 23-22, but the Salukis can tie things up with a win on Saturday. SIU is 9-14 all-time against the Sycamores when playing in Terre Haute. 11-Straight With the 27-8 victory over Youngstown State, Southern Illinois has now won 11-straight Missouri Valley Football Conference games. Southern Illinois has only lost four fumbles this season (three on offense and one on a punt return), which are the fourth fewest in the nation. Senior running back Deji Karim is the one Saluki best at securing the ball. In his two seasons, he has touched the ball 237 times and has yet to fumble it. He has 215 career rushes, 14 receptions and eight kickoff returns with zero fumbles. The Salukis as a team have forced 17 turnovers, but have only given up eight of their own to stand plus nine in the turnover department. SIU has two games this year with no turnovers, including last week’s 27-8 win over Youngstown State. The other was in a win over North Dakota State on Sept. 26.

2009 Saluki Football Game Notes 2003 • 2004 • 2005 • 2008 MVFC Champions holds the league record for the most consecutive conference victories, as the Panthers reeled off 13-straight from 1993-95. SIU’s last Valley Football defeat came on Oct. 4, 2008, when No. 6 North Dakota State overcame a 20-point first half deficit to win 35-27 in Fargo, N.D. Since then, Southern Illinois has had a mixture of blowout victories and tight wins. When SIU defeated then second-ranked Northern Iowa on Oct. 17, the Salukis ended the Panthers’ nine-game MVFC win streak to take over league supremacy. If the Dawgs are going to tie UNI’s league record, they will have to win their next two games on the road and that includes the Nov. 7 game at No. 9 South Dakota State. The Salukis are 5-1 under head coach Dale Lennon in league road games. McIntosh Up To Bat Redshirt freshman Paul McIntosh, who transferred to SIU from Army in October 2008, replaced an injured Chris Dieker in the first quarter against Youngstown State last weekend and led the Dawgs to a 27-8 victory. He entered a scoreless game late in the first quarter, but produced almost immediately as the high-powered Saluki offense registered their 16-straight game with at least 300 yards of total offense. McIntosh stepped into the Saluki record-books with his first pass, which was completed to Joe Allaria for an 86-yard touchdown. The pass was the second longest in school history and only one yard behind Rick Johnson’s record 87-yard pass to Cecil Ratliff against Drake in 1983, the year SIU won its only national championship. McIntosh finished the game completing 10-of-14 passes for 133 yards. His agility made it hard for the Penguins to defend and he finished as the games leading rusher with 81 yards on 12 carries. McIntosh, from Evansville, Ind., was the 2007 Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year when he threw for 2,400 yards and 22 touchdowns while leading Reitz High School to a perfect 15-0 record and a state championship. He rushed for 1,600 yards and 34 touchdowns as a four-year varsity starter, so using his feet like he did last Saturday was nothing new to him. Tough to come by Southern Illinois only allowed Youngstown State to gain 50 net yards running the ball last weekend. The Penguins came into the game averaging 183.7 yards on the ground, but were completely shut down by the Saluki defense that is looking better and better each week. This was the second game this season that the Dawgs held the opposition to under 100 yards rushing and the ninth time overall under head coach Dale Lennon and defensive coordinator Bubba Schweigert. Last year, Southern Illinois held three opponents to under 50 yards rushing. The lowest came on Nov. 1, 2008 against North Dakota in McAndrew Stadium. On that day, Lennon’s Saluki team held his former squad to just 20 yards on the ground on 28 attempts. Youngstown State had 24 attempts last weekend, but only averaged 2.1 yards per carry. SIU is allowing 116.3 rushing yards a game this season. First of the Year Fred Wright blocked the first punt of the season for the Salukis early in the second quarter against Youngstown State. Wright blocked the punt at the YSU 11-yard line and it was picked up by Rashad Graham who ultimately got the ball down to the two. The Salukis scored two plays later on John Goode’s first rushing touchdown of his career to give the Salukis a 7-0 lead at 13:39 of the second. Karim Gets to 1,000 On his 132 carry of the season, senior running back Deji Karim became the 18th Saluki to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. He became the third fastest in school history to get to 1,000 yards as he reached the milestone in game No. 7, which ties for the third fastest in MVFC history. Former Salukis Muhammad Abdulqaadir (five games) and Karlton Carpenter (six games) were the fastest to reach 1,000 yards in Valley history. Karim used just two more carries than Abdulqaadir and one more than Byron Mitchell in 1985 for the fastest to the milestone in terms on number of carries. Karim, who has five 100-yard rushing games and two 200-yard games this year, has rushed 139 times for 1,026 yards and 10 touchdowns this year. He leads the nation in rushing at 146.6 yards per game and his 202.9 all-purpose yards a game ranks No. 2 in the nation. Karim, a senior that transferred from Northeast Oklahoma A&M Junior College, has 18 rushing touchdowns in his two seasons. That is tied for the ninth most by a Saluki and he needs one more to tie Brandon Jacobs for the eighth most by a SIU running back. He needs just 88 more yards to become the 19th running back in program history to rush for over 1,500 yards in a career.

Friendly Fire Juniors Mike McElroy and Korey Lindsey have been going back-and-forth for the leagues lead in interceptions. McElroy’s five picks led the league going into last week’s game, but Korey Lindsey intercepted two passes to give him six on the year and surpass McElroy. Those six picks are tied for the most in the nation and Lindsey was named the MVFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Lindsey also recorded a career-high 12 tackles in the win over Youngstown State and his first career sack, which dropped the Penguins back 17 yards when they had a first-and-goal at the SIU two-yard line late in the fourth quarter. Lindsey now has 13 career interceptions, which ranks No. 3 in school history behind Terry Taylor (20) and Greg Shipp (18). McElroy is tied for fifth nationally with 0.71 picks per game and the Salukis as a team are tied for second in the nation with 14 interceptions. Southern Illinois has forced a turnover in 17-consecutive games and have forced three or more turnovers in 5-of-7 games this year (counting the blocked punt in last week’s game). Allaria Gets Second 100-Yard Game Joe Allaria recorded his second 100-yard receiving game of the season when he had five catches for 108 yards and one touchdown against Youngstown State. His one touchdown came on an simple five-yard out pass that Allaria made a couple of defenders miss before speeding past the Penguin defense and reaching the end zone. 2009 Saluki Football Game Notes 2003 • 2004 • 2005 • 2008 MVFC Champions 7-for-7 Junior kicker Kyle Dougherty is 12-for-13 on field goal attempts this season. He is making 1.71 field goals per game, which is the fourth most in the nation and his 12 made field goals are tied for fourth in the FCS. After making only 4-of-10 attempts in the 40-49 yard range last year, he has found his mark from that distance in his junior year where he is a perfect 7-for-7. Dougherty’s long this season is 45 yards, a distance he has connected on three times. His 42 career field goals are the second most in school history (eight off Craig Coffin’s record) and he ranks fifth in Saluki history with 257 career points. Jordan Wrecking Havoc Senior inside linebacker and Buck Buchanan Award candidate Brandin Jordan may have only recorded six tackles in the win over Youngstown State, but he played a vital role in the victory and holding YSU to only 50 yards rushing. Jordan tied his career-high with 1.5 sacks in the game and he also had three quarterback hurries. His sacks dropped the Penguins back a total of 17 yards. On Youngstown State’s first drive of the game they made it to the SIU 25-yard line. There they faced a fourth-and-one and the Penguins went for it, but Jordan stuffed running back Kevin Smith at the line of scrimmage to give the ball to the Salukis. Jordan has 45 tackles on the year, 4.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and five quarterback hurries. Good Field Position SIU’s average starting field position in the Youngstown State game was its own 39-yard line. That ties with the North Dakota State game for the best average starting field position this year. The Salukis had four drives that started past midfield, which was a season-high. On the flip side, Youngstown State’s average starting field position was its own 21 and they had three drives start inside its own 20. On the season, the Salukis have started at their own 34-yard line on average. High Pressure The Salukis have sacked the quarterback four times in four games this year, after doing so once again against Youngstown State. The Dawgs lead the conference with 2.71 sacks per game (19 total) and that ranks 19th in the country. Senior outside linebacker Kyle Walker leads the team with 4.5 sacks and he ranks 16th nationally with 0.83 sacks per game. Brandin Jordan has three sacks and 16 different Salukis have at least shared a sack this year. The pressure put on the quarterback has resulted in 14 interceptions, which is tied for the second most in the nation. On the other side, Southern Illinois has allowed the second fewest sacks in the conference this year (nine or 1.29 per game). This-N-That • SIU is 11-0 versus unranked opponents under head coach Dale Lennon. • The Salukis converted 5-of-6 third down attempts of less than six yards against Youngstown State and have converted eight of their last 12 within that distance going back to the Northern Iowa game. • Southern Illinois is 14-3 since 2008 when scoring first and is 11-1 when leading after three quarters. • The Dawgs have held six opponents to 10 points or less since 2008. • Chris Dieker and Paul McIntosh combined to complete 15-of-20 passes against Youngstown State for a .750 completion percentage. • Combining the victories from last year and this season, SIU’s 15 win’s are tied for the ninth most in back-to-back seasons in school history. 50 Inside 20 Senior punter Scott Ravanesi has downed 46.7 percent of his 30 punts this year inside the 20-yard line. He had two marked inside the 20 last week at Youngstown State, giving the Carol Stream, Ill. native 50 for his career. Ravanesi, SIU’s all-time leader in punting average, is fourth in the nation this season with his 44.3 average. In his four-year career, he has averaged 42.9 yards per punt, which is close behind Mike Scifres MVFC record. Scifres, who played at Western Illinois from 1999-02, averaged 43.35 yards per punt. Third-Down Defense In the last three games, Southern Illinois has only allowed its opponent to convert 12-of-39 third down attempts. Opponents are only converting 36 percent of their third down attempts against the Salukis this season, which ranks third in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Salukis make it even tougher on fourth downs, as they rank sixth nationally by only allowing 20 percent of fourth down tries to be converted. 87-Straight Including the Oct. 26 rankings, Southern Illinois has appeared in the Top 20 in 87-consecutive regular season polls (not including preseason rankings). That is the longest active streak in the conference and it is closing in on the all-time Missouri Valley Football Conference record. Northern Iowa was ranked in the Top 25 96-straight weeks from 1990-97. The Salukis have also been ranked in the Top 10 of the FCS Coaches Poll for 13-straight weeks, not including the 2009 preseason poll that penned SIU at No. 7.

Halloween Date Saturday’s game will be the 12th in SIU history played on Halloween. The first game on the holiday came in 1913 in SIU inaugural season and it was the fifth game in program history. The Dawgs fell 54-12 that day to Eastern Illinois in Carbondale. Southern Illinois has been spooked on this date, as they have just a 3-8 record in Halloween games and are 0-4 on the road. One of those road losses came at Indiana State in 1987 - a 24-15 loss. The last time the Salukis played on Halloween was in 1998 at Missouri State where SIU fell, 28-13. New Stadium in the Works Southern Illinois University is in the process of building a new football stadium, which will open in 2010. The horseshoe-shaped facility will have a seating capacity of 15,000 and include 1,080 prime chairback seats. The new stadium will be highlighted by a two-story press box that will feature 12 luxury suites and a 2,500-square foot VIP Club Room, along with traditional booths for coaches and TV/radio personnel. SIU will be the 22nd school to unveil a new stadium since 2000 and the 16th FCS school. Minnesota and Akron both opened up new stadiums this season and the last FCS school to christen a new stadium was Campbell in 2008. HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Marshall spoiled an upset bid by Southern Illinois, striking for three-straight touchdowns in the third quarter to hold off the Salukis, 31-28, in the season opener for both schools on Saturday. Southern followed its blueprint for victory to the letter in the first half. It played with poise and confidence en route to a 14-7 halftime advantage. Scores came on a touchdown run by quarterback Chris Dieker and a Dieker TD pass to Marc Cheatham. To the dismay of a boisterous crowd of 24,012 -- many of whom expect the Thundering Herd to make a bowl run this season -- Marshall could only muster a late second-quarter touchdown. That score was set up by Lee Smith’s recovery of a fumbled punt at SIU’s 22. The pendulum swung dramatically in the Herd’s favor during the third quarter, however. Saluki turnovers and penalties, plus Marshall’s hurry-up offense were the main culprits. Led by quarterback Brian Anderson, Marshall needed just six plays and 90 seconds to tie the game, 14-14, on an Anderson to Antavio Wilson 28-yard pass. A busted play resulted in a Dieker fumble on the first play of SIU’s next possession, giving Marshall the ball at Southern’s 41. Anderson led another short touchdown drive that was capped by a Terrel Edwards-May 11-yard run. “My whole theory is you make the opponent earn everything they get,” said Saluki head coach Dale Lennon. “If they get a drive that is 70 or 80 yards, and they take it 12 plays on you, they earned it. You can live with that. But when you make mistakes that give them opportunities to score...” After a three-and-out by Southern’s offense, Marshall drove 59 yards in five plays for a touchdown that gave the Herd a 28-14 lead with five minutes to go in the quarter. The drive was aided by a pair of pass interference penalties against the Salukis. “We said at halftime, ‘Marshall is in there getting their butts chewed, so we need to come out with a higher energy level,’” said Saluki linebacker Ryan Patton. “But we just let Marshall take the ball right down the field, and we just didn’t come out with that energy.” The tide turned so quickly and decisively in the third quarter, that SIU did not have enough time to recover. “We just gave over the momentum, and that’s something against a good football team you just can’t do,” Lennon said. “We had some of those first-game mistakes that are always a coach’s nightmare.” Trailing by 14, the Salukis did mount a comeback -- they simply ran out of time. Mixing the power running of Deji Karim with short passes, the Salukis drove 66 yards in eight plays, as Dieker hit fullback John Goode for a touchdown that cut the deficit to 28-21 late in the third. Karim had 25 of his game-high 67 yards on the drive. Trailing, 31-21, the Salukis got the ball back with 3:35 remaining thanks to a dramatic 4th-and-1 goalline stand, in which Edwards-Maye was flattened by Patton and linebacker Brandin Jordan for a one-yard loss. Jordan, a preseason candidate for the Buchanan Award, led the defense with 12 stops, including a sack, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Southern then mounted its best drive of the day, marching 91-yards behind the right arm of Dieker and a couple of nifty quarterback scrambles. When Dieker plunged into the end zone on a five-yard scamper with 1:55 remaining, it cut the deficit to 31-28. SIU failed to recover an onside kick by Kyle Dougherty, and Marshall ran the clock down to 30 seconds before giving the ball back to SIU at its own 19. Dieker’s desperation pass to Jeff Evans on the game’s final play fell incomplete. “We weren’t looking for a moral victory,” Lennon said. “Our intention was to come in and win this football game. I’m sitting here thinking we had our chance to win this game and with that, I’m disappointed.” Playing at the Football Championship Subdivision level, the Salukis hardly appeared over-matched at the line of scrimmage. In fact, SIU out-rushed the Herd 105-72 and limited Marshall to just 2.0 yards per carry. Southern’s offensive line also turned away Marshall’s vaunted pass rush, giving Dieker time to complete 22of-37 passes.

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Senior running back Deji Karim set a new school record for the most rushing yards per carry and Southern Illinois racked up the second most offensive yardage in program history as the Salukis defeated Southwest Baptist (0-4), 59-7, Saturday night at McAndrew Stadium. SIU (1-1) finished the game with 699 yards of total offense. Karim averaged 21.0 yards on his 10 carries, shattering the old school record by almost seven yard a carry for a back with at least 10 attempts. Head coach Dale Lennon, whose team had a bye last weekend, said that these last two weeks have been very long. “The guys were hungry and they wanted to play tonight,” Lennon said. “You know, you just finish a game, and you lose and you feel like you had a chance to win and then you have to sit a week. I don’t think that they over looked Southwest Baptist and I feel that we really needed to win the game tonight and the guys responded.” Much of the offensive outburst came on the ground. Of the 699 total yards, 435 of it came by the run, which is the seventh-most ever in a Saluki game. Fullback Lucien Walker added 78 yards on 14 carries and Richard White added 53 yards on 11 carries. Not to be surprised, Southern Illinois produced big plays all night long. Of SIU’s eight touchdowns in the game, four of them went for 39 yards or more. Karim led the Dawgs with 290 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. His 61-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter was the longest run of his career. He rushed for a career-high 210 yards in all Saturday, with two touchdowns and he returned a kickoff 82 yards for SIU’s first score of the game. Junior quarterback Chris Dieker completed 14-of-17 passes for 243 yards and he accounted for three scores (two passing and one rushing). Dieker’s 82.4 completion percentage was the fifth-best in school history. Junior wide receiver Joe Allaria had a career night. He set new personal bests with seven catches for 144 yards and scored one touchdown on a 77-yard pass from Dieker. The Bearcats were led by quarterback Steve Gachette, who finished the game with 210 yards passing and 63 rushing. However, he threw three interceptions, two of which went to junior Korey Lindsey. Southwest Baptist came out swinging and took the game’s opening drive 78 yards in for the score. Gachette completed 6-of-7 passes on the drive, which he capped off with an 18-yard TD pass to Charles Johnson. SIU would not be flustered and countered with a flurry. Karim started it by returning the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for the score. SIU’s secondary unit took exception to Gachette’s efforts on the first drive and intercepted him the next two times SBU had the ball. “When they scored, it stunned us all,” Karim said. “When we got in that huddle on the kickoff return, I was fired up. So was Richard (White) and everybody else in the huddle. We said right then and there it was time to put that to an end and this is where it stops.” Lindsey’s first pick of the game set up 21-yard Kyle Dougherty field goal and senior Mike McElroy’s interception led to SIU’s second touchdown. That came via the 77-yard Dieker pass to Allaria at the 3:50 mark of the first quarter. It is the longest pass of Dieker’s career. Dieker and the Salukis continued to roll right at the start of the second quarter. He hit Jeff Evans on a 39yard touchdown pass just two minutes into the quarter. After two more minutes had passed, Karim scored his second touchdown of the game on a six-yard run. Southern finished the half scoring one more time on a one-yard Dieker run. The Salukis had 364 yards of total offense at halftime, which were 53 more than they had in the season opener. Karim continued his magic in the third quarter. He scored 29 seconds into the period on a career-long 61 yard run. By then the Salukis were up 45-7 and they took their starters out of the game. Walker and and running back Anton Wilkins scored the last two TDs for SIU on the ground. Southern Illinois returns home next weekend for its conference opener against North Dakota State. The Saturday game is set to kickoff at 6 p.m. at McAndrew Stadium.

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Behind a strong defensive effort, No. 8 Southern Illinois was able to win its eighth-straight Missouri Valley Football Conference opener with a 24-14 victory over North Dakota State, Saturday at McAndrew Stadium. The two teams came into the game ranked in the top six nationally in scoring offense, but it was a clean game controlled by defense and field position. The Salukis (2-1, 1-0 MVFC) held the Bison (1-3, 0-1) to just 14 points after they had averaged 40.3 points coming into the game. Senior linebacker Kyle Walker had three of SIU’s four sacks in the game. He entered the contest with just two career sacks. North Dakota State only managed 14 points off of its 324 yards of total offense. Southern Illinois never trailed in the game and kept the Bison at bay, despite having the ball for 15 minutes less than NDSU had it. “They were having success moving the ball, but we didn’t give up any big plays,” head coach Dale Lennon said. “Overall, I’m very proud of our defense and how they kept their composure. Things didn’t necessarily go our way, but our guys just hung in there. It was a well played game on both sides.” The Saluki special teams had a big hand in the victory. Punter Scott Ravanesi backed the Bison back up towards their goal line all night long. He averaged 46.4 yards on eight punts and three were downed inside the NDSU 20-yard line. Kicker Kyle Dougherty added a 44-yard field goal in the first half. The nation’s top two rushers in terms of yards per game were featured Saturday. NDSU’s Pat Paschall finished with 150 yards rushing on 28 carries, but never found the end zone. SIU’s Deji Karim had 96 of his 127 yards in the second half and scored one touchdown. His 35-yard run early in the fourth quarter set up SIU’s last touchdown, a seven-yard Chris Dieker to Joe Allaria pass. Dieker finished with 186 yards on 10-of-23 passing with two TDs. His 61-yard pass to Jeff Evans early in the second quarter started the scoring Saturday. Allaria led all receivers in the game with six catches for 90 yards and that one score. Senior linebacker Brandin Jordan and junior free safety Mike McElroy tied for a game-high 10 tackles. Jordan recorded his 300th career tackle Saturday and became the 13th Saluki ever to do so. SIU senior safety Marty Rodgers had an interception late in the fourth quarter, which was the only turnover in the game. The first quarter was a scoreless one, as the two potent offensives were subdued with the sturdy defense. SIU and North Dakota State had just 57 and 56 yards, respectively, in the first 15 minutes and Dieker completed just 2-of-8 passes. However, Dieker found his mark on SIU’s first drive of the second quarter. That’s where he completed both of his passes that he capped off with that 61-yard touchdown pass to Evans, giving the Salukis a 7-0 lead. The Bison countered with a methodical, 10-play 60-yard drive. Running back D.J. McNorton scored on a one-yard run that tied the game up at seven. Dougherty would give the Salukis a 10-7 lead going into the locker room with his 44-yard field goal with 2:51 to play. Midway through the third quarter, Karim gave Southern Illinois a 10-point cushion with his 23-yard touchdown run. That rushing touchdown was his third of the season. Early in the fourth quarter after a 13-play Bison drive, the Salukis blocked a 25-yard Shawn Bibeau field goal. However, SIU had touched the ball past the line of scrimmage, making the ball live and North Dakota State offensive lineman Gerry Ebel recovered it in the end zone for a Bison touchdown at 13:19. The play was initially ruled a touchback, but after the officials huddled together, they confirmed the ball was touched past the line of scrimmage and thus a touchdown, cutting the SIU lead down to three. Southern Illinois was not fazed by the strange turn of events and answered with a touchdown at 8:16. The Salukis drove 54 yards on five plays, with help from a Karim 35-yard run. Dieker found Allaria in the flat who ran it seven yards for the touchdown. As was the theme in the game, SIU did not give up any big plays and shut down the Bison the rest of the way to secure the victory. Rodgers’ interception on a tipped pass at 6:38 on the Saluki 19-yard line squashed the last good chance NDSU had to come from behind. Southern Illinois hits the road next weekend to face Western Illinois, Saturday, Oct. 3 in Macomb, Ill. The game is televised by the Missouri Valley Football Conference and is the FCS national Radio Game of the Week.

MACOMB, Ill. - Deji Karim’s two touchdowns and 282 all-purpose yards led No. 8 Southern Illinois to a 30-10 victory over Western Illinois Saturday at Hanson Field to give the Salukis their 400th victory in program history. Karim had 18 carries for 157 yards and the two scores. His 92-yard touchdown run on SIU’s first offensive play of the game set a new school record. He also added a career-long 42yard reception and a 69-yard kickoff return in the game. SIU’s 20-point win gave the Salukis their eighth-straight victory over the Leathernecks (1-3, 0-1 MVFC). SIU goes to 3-1 on the year and start 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference for the eighth time in the last nine seasons. “It was a good win for us tonight,” head coach Dale Lennon said. “In the first half the offense came out and did what they had to do and in the second half the defense closed out the game for us. “It wasn’t the prettiest win for us, but what I told the team in the locker room is that we’ll take a win on the road any day.” Western Illinois quarterback Matt Barr came into the game ranked No. 9 nationally in passing with 274.7 yards per game, but only had 90 yards before leaving in the first half with a thumb injury. SIU’s defense held backup quarterback Wil Lunt to just 7-of-14 passing and 50 yards while sacking him four times. The Salukis outgained WIU 368-243 in the game and forced three interceptions, two by Mike McElroy and one by Lance Caldwell. Quarterback Chris Dieker was 14-of-24 in the game for 154 yards and one touchdown. Karim, the nation’s No. 2 rusher, had 217 all-purpose yards by halftime as the Salukis had four scoring drives in the first 30 minutes that all lasted less than three and a half minutes. Junior kicker Kyle Dougherty connected on all three of his field goal attempts and two of them were from 43-yards. Southern’s defense, which only allowed the Leathernecks to complete 42 percent of their passes, was led by safeties Marty Rodgers and McElroy. Rodgers tied for the game-high with eight tackles and McElroy had six stops to go with his two picks. Caldwell registered his first career sack in the game to go with his first interception. Things looked good right from the start. On SIU’s first offensive play of the game, Karim took the handoff from Dieker 92 yards in for the score. Following a Dieker fumble on a sack, Western Illinois got a 30-yard field goal from Brian Egan at 4:30 of the first quarter to get the Leathernecks on the board. Despite the hiccup on the fumble, Karim kept the Salukis going. He returned the kickoff following WIU’s field goal 69 yards to the Leatherneck 26 and then four plays later he scored on a three-yard run to put SIU up 14-3 after the first quarter. Western Illinois got its first touchdown of the game early in the second quarter following a 13-play, 74-yard drive. Dre Gibbs scored for the Leathernecks on a two-yard run at 11:39. Dougherty put the Salukis up 17-10 with a 43-yard field goal a little over three minutes later. It came on a seven-play, 46-yard scoring drive that was kept alive early thanks to a 42-yard Dieker to Karim pass on a thirdand-10 on SIU’s 28-yard line. The Dawgs added 10 more points before halftime to take a 27-10 lead into the locker rooms. Fullback John Goode caught his second touchdown pass of the season from Dieker on a 7-yard reception at 3:58 and Dougherty hit a 37-yard field goal with :07 left in the half. Southern Illinois got another Dougherty field goal on its first drive of the second half. This one was once again from 43 yards and it came after a 10-play drive four-plus minute drive. That would be the end of the scoring Saturday. After giving up 188 yards in the first half, the Saluki defense tightened up in the second half. In the third quarter, Western Illinois had negative four yards of offense and only 55 yards in the fourth quarter. Three of SIU’s four sacks came in the second half and the Leathernecks did not score in the final 41:39 of the game as Southern Illinois coasted to the road victory.

CARBONDALE, Ill. - An electric first half full of big offensive plays was topped by two huge Saluki defensive plays that allowed No. 6 Southern Illinois to win its ninth-straight Missouri Valley Football Conference game with a 43-23 victory over Illinois State, Saturday on Homecoming at McAndrew Stadium. Southern Illinois, led by 273 rushing yards and three touchdowns by senior running back Deji Karim, has now won 15-straight conference home games. Karim’s yardage on the ground is the third most in a game in school history. The Dawgs improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference, setting up a pivotal matchup at No. 3 Northern Iowa next weekend. ISU falls to 2-4 on the year and 1-2 in the league. Korey Lindsey’s interception against two open receivers on a fleeflicker early in the fourth quarter allowed SIU to extend its three-point lead. Then Ryan Patton forced a fumble on a sack with the Redbirds inside the SIU 30 in the fourth quarter, allowing the Dawgs to finish the game with 20 unanswered points. Karim became just the ninth back in SIU history to rush for 100 yards in four-straight games. His 93-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was one yard further than his school record 92-yarder he had last weekend at Western Illinois. It was his second 200-yard rushing game of the season. “Deji was pretty impressive,” head coach Dale Lennon said. “It’s just one of those things that when you have a player like that offensively, it makes it difficult to defend.” The Salukis had 613 yards of total offense in the game - the fourth most in school history. Junior quarterback Chris Dieker threw for a career-high 274 yards and two scores that were both over 40 yards. Illinois State quarterback Matt Brown, a Marion native, had 321 yards passing with two TDs and two interceptions. Geno Blow had 84 yards rushing and the Redbirds had 428 yards of total offense. Kyle Walker led the SIU defense with seven tackles, while Lindsey had six as did senior safety Marty Rodgers. Patton’s sack, was the only one in the game for the Dawgs and Mike McElroy intercepted a pass of his own after the game had been decided. In the first half alone, there was 650 yards of total offense between the two teams. Southern Illinois had 364 of that. Four of the five touchdowns between the two teams in the first half longer than 30 yards. The Salukis had seven plays in the first 30 minutes that were longer than 15 yards. In the same fashion as last weekend, Karim started the scoring with a huge touchdown run. This week his 93-yarder at 7:27 gave the Salukis a 7-0 lead. Illinois State’s Zach Kutch was able to get a 25-yard field goal before Karim struck again. With 27 seconds left in the first quarter, Karim bounced through the left side of the line and outran the Redbird defense to the goal line for a 31-yard touchdown. Junior kicker Kyle Dougherty put the Salukis up 16-3 with a 33-yard field goal at 8:12 of the second quarter. The Salukis had the Redbirds backed up on a third-and-11 on their ensuing drive. Brown dropped back to pass and was flushed out of the pocket, but bought time and found Tyrone Walker past the SIU secondary. He caught the pass near the SIU 40-yard line and took it in for an 81-yard score. That play gave Illinois State enough momentum to halt the Salukis on the ensuing drive and set up a 33-yard Kutch field goal to cut SIU’s lead down to three. However, Dieker put an end to ISU’s run, momentarily. Southern Illinois got the ball back with 2:13 left in the first half and after a sack on first down, Dieker got SIU a first down with a nine-yard rush and a short pass to Bryce Morris. Then on a first down, he hit Marc Cheatham on a fade down the sideline for a 54-yard touchdown with 59 seconds left in the half. Three personal foul calls against the Salukis, one following the touchdown that was enforced on the kickoff, allowed Illinois State to drive down inside the SIU 20-yard line in the final minute of the half. That’s when Brown found Eyad Salem open in the corner of the end zone for the TD. With the last score, Southern Illinois only held a 23-20 lead at the half. Both teams exchanged field goals in the first seven minutes of the third period. After the busy first half, those were the only points scored in the third quarter. Early in the fourth, Illinois State had a flee-flicker called and SIU bit on the run. The Redbirds had two open receivers down field, but Lindsey was playing centerfield and he was able to make an incredible interception. Three plays later Karim found the end zone for the third time on a 21-yard run to put SIU up by 10. Illinois State came back with a drive past the SIU 30-yard line, but the Saluki defense came up with another big play. Brown was rolling out to his left, but senior linebacker Ryan Patton got to him for the sack and forced a fumble that Chance Coda recovered. Southern Illinois put the game away from there, adding a 27-yard Dougherty field goal and a 42-yard Dieker to Ryan Kernes touchdown pass. Saturday’s win gives the Salukis eight-straight victories on homecoming. Now Southern Illinois travels to meet Northern Iowa in a heavyweight bout where both teams could possibly be ranked in the Top five.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - An opportunistic fifth-ranked Southern Illinois football team ended an 11-game losing streak in Cedar Falls, Iowa by beating No. 2 Northern Iowa, 27-20, Saturday in front of a record crowd of 17,190 at the UNI-Dome. There had been four previous Missouri Valley Football Conference games between Top 5 teams, and SIU became the first to beat the team ranked higher. With the win, Southern Illinois is sitting pretty in the conference championship race. The Salukis improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference. UNI falls to 5-2 and 3-1 in the league. SIU’s win over the second-ranked Panthers is its first win against a team ranked that high since beating No. 1 Western Kentucky on Oct. 27, 2005. It was also SIU’s seventh win in program history over a Top 5 team. Southern Illinois has now also won 10-straight MVFC games. The Salukis have five games remaining and three of them are on the road. “I told our team afterwards in the locker room that it was just game No. 6, but it was a heck of a game No. 6,” head coach Dale Lennon said. “We had a great defensive effort. We got to give our players credit for keeping their focus because the guys did well and were able to get the job done.” Steven Morse’s fumble recovery on a fumbled punt set up Deji Karim’s one-yard touchdown run to put Southern Illinois up 20-13 with five minutes to play. Senior cornerback Brandon Williamsadded a touchdown on an interception return at 2:48 that ended up being the winning points, as UNI was able to score in the final two minutes to cut SIU’s lead down to seven. However, wide receiver Marc Cheatham recovered the Panther onside kick to secure the victory for the Dawgs. The Saluki red zone defense deserves much of the credit as anybody in the victory. Excluding the last touchdown in the final minutes, Northern Iowa had the ball inside the Southern 10-yard line four times, but were only able to score three times and totaled just 13 points. Junior safety Mike McElroy intercepted a pass from wide receiver D.P. Eyman on a trick play late in the third quarter that ended one of UNI’s possessions deep in Saluki territory. Karim rushed for over 100 yards for the fifth-straight game, becoming just the sixth Saluki ever to do so. He finished the game with 125 yards on 24 attempts with one touchdown and added one catch for 48 yards. Senior quarterback Chris Dieker led an efficient offense and made some key plays for the Dawgs. He finished the game completing 16-of-29 passes for 174 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He added 44 big yards rushing on 10 carries and picked up a pair of key third downs with his legs. The Saluki defense held Northern Iowa to nearly 100 yards under their per game total offense average. Panther quarterback Pat Grace only completed 13 of his 28 passes for 219 yards. Buck Buchanan Award candidate Brandin Jordan led the Saluki defense with six tackles, but it was the unit that collectively won the game for Southern Illinois. Kyle Dougherty started the scoring Saturday with a 45-yard field goal at 3:17 of the first quarter. Karim got SIU into field goal position with runs of 22 and 10 yards during the drive. Northern Iowa would take the lead early in the second after a 10-play, 69-yard drive. The Panthers had a first-and-goal at the SIU four, but the Salukis held them at the one on third down. UNI went for it on fourth and Grace hit Carlos Anderson in the flat for the touchdown. The Salukis came back with a 12-play, 78-yard drive that Dougherty finished once again with a field goal, this time from 27 yards out to cut the Panther lead down to one. UNI would tack on three more points before halftime, but it could have been more. The Panthers had a third-and-goal from the SIU three with less then a minute before the half, but the Saluki defense held once again and Northern Iowa’s Billy Hallgren hit a 27-yard field goal. At the start of the second half UNI drove down to the Southern 32, but the Salukis held them on a third- and fourth-and-two to obtain possession. Then Dieker drove the Dawgs in for their first touchdown of the game on a 10-play drive. He hit Bryce Morris on a 17-yard toss to give SIU a 13-10 lead. Inside of five minutes of the third quarter, UNI had the ball inside the SIU 10-yard line for the third time of the game. On a second-and-goal at the 10, Eyman took a handoff and looked to throw. He was pressured and lobbed a pass back across the field that McElroy picked off. Early in the fourth the Panthers once again drove down inside of the Saluki 10-yard line. They had a third-and-goal at the one and Grace lobbed a pass to tight end Schuylar Oordt who got his hands on the ball, but Fred Wright was able to knock it away and UNI had to settle for a 19-yard Hallgren field goal. That made it a 13-all ball game with just under 12 minutes to play. After a Southern Illinois drive past the UNI 50-yard line, the Salukis were stopped and forced to punt. Scott Ravanesi’s punt went inside the UNI 15 and return man Varmah Sonie tried to pick it up, but bobbled it and Morse jumped on it at the seven-yard line, setting up a Saluki first-and-goal. Northern Iowa didn’t make it easy, but Karim was able to score on a fourth-and-goal at the one to put the Salukis up 20-13 with 5:06 to play. On the ensuing possession, SIU had Grace rattled and he threw a pass right at Williams, with no Panther in sight. Williams easily took the ball in for the touchdown and that basically put an end to the game. UNI did come back to score one once more, but the Salukis closed out the game with the victory.

CARBONDALE, Ill. - No. 3 Southern Illinois won its 11th-straight Missouri Valley Football Conference game and its 16th-straight league home game with a 27-8 victory over Youngstown State, Saturday on Family Weekend at McAndrew Stadium. The Salukis have now won six straight games and stand at 6-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the conference. Their 11thstraight MVFC victory ties with Western Illinois’ 11-consecutive from 1997-98 for the second most in league history. Youngstown State fell to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in league play. SIU starting quarterback Chris Dieker was knocked out of the game late in the first quarter with an injury, but redshirt freshman Paul McIntosh did a good job filling his void to lead the Salukis to the victory. McIntosh completed 10-of-14 passes for 133 yards and he led Southern Illinois with 81 yards rushing on 12 carries. His 86-yard touchdown to Joe Allaria on his first pass of the game was the second longest in school history. Allaria caught a five-yard out-route and after alluding a defender, he outraced the Youngstown State defense to the end zone for the first score of the game. “That was probably one of the turning points in the game,” head coach Dale Lennon said of the 86-yard score. “When Joe (Allaria) caught the ball I didn’t think he could break it loose and then to see him beat everyone to the end zone was good. Paul McIntosh did a great job coming in and he gained the confidence of the offense.” Senior running back Deji Karim was held under 100 yards rushing for the first time since the season opener. However, he did eclipse 1,000 yards rushing on the season during the game and became the third fastest Saluki to reach 1,000 yards in a year. Youngstown State had 346 yards of total offense, but only 50 on the ground. Penguin quarterback Brandon Summers led YSU with 296 yards passing on 30-of-45 attempts with one touchdown and two interceptions. Junior cornerback Korey Lindsey led the Dawgs with 12 tackles, two interceptions and a half sack. He moved up into third place in school history with 13 career interceptions. SIU had four sacks in the game and senior linebacker Brandin Jordan accounted for 1.5 of those to go along with his six tackles and three quarterback hurries. Bryce Morris and Allaria both had five receptions and Allaria’s 108 yards receiving gave him his second 100-yard receiving game of the season. Karim added three catches for 24 yards to give him 91 all-purpose yards in the game, his lowest output of the season. SIU’s special teams got the ball rolling after a scoreless first quarter. Fred Wright blocked Ben Nowicki’s punt at the Penguin 11-yard line and Rashad Graham picked it up for SIU and carried it down to the two. Two plays later fullback John Goode scored his first career rushing touchdown on a one-yard plunge to give Southern Illinois the 7-0 lead at 13:39 of the second quarter. McIntosh, who came in late in the first quarter for the injured Dieker, then got SIU a 14-point lead with his first pass of the game. That’s when he found Allaria for the 86-yard touchdown. The Penguins had a chance to get on the scoreboard late in the second half, as they drove down to the Southern seven-yard line. With a false start and a third down stop, the Dawgs forced Youngstown State to kick a 25-yard field goal. The kick by Stephen Blose never got off the ground and thus the Salukis held a 14-0 lead at the half. Southern Illinois got its third touchdown of the game on its first drive of the second half. Karim, who went over 1,000 yards rushing on the drive, put it in on a two-yard run. It was his 18th career touchdown run, which ties for the ninth most in school history. Junior kicker Kyle Dougherty would add a 44-yard field goal at 1:35, giving the Salukis a 24-0 lead after three quarters. Youngstown State ended a seven-quarter scoreless drought against SIU by scoring a touchdown at 9:55 of the fourth quarter. Summers found Aaron Pitts for a 56-yard touchdown pass and then the Penguins added on a two-point conversion to cut the Saluki lead down to 24-8. After the Salukis ran off a good chunk of the clock on a drive into YSU territory, Dougherty hit his second 40-yard field goal to make it a 27-8 game. The 45-yarder at 6:17 was his seventh 40-yarder of the season. With a pair of Lindsey interceptions late in the game, no more points would be scored and the Salukis walked away with the 27-8 victory.
