The Indiana State Head Coach Indiana State is led by head coach Trent Miles, a 1987 ISU graduate and Terre Haute native. Miles made his head coaching debut last season against Eastern Michigan and carries a record of 1-20 into Saturday’s game. Miles previously spent three seasons (2005-07) as the running backs coach at Washington and three years at Notre Dame (2002-04) as the wide receivers coach. Miles is 0-1 against the Bears and 1-13 against members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Miles earned his first career collegiate coaching victory on Oct. 24 with a 17-14 victory over Western Illinois. The Missouri State Head Coach Missouri State is led by fourth-year head coach Terry Allen, who is 17-25 at the Springfield, Mo., school. He is in his 16th season as a collegiate head coach, and has amassed a 112-84 record at Northern Iowa, Kanasas and Missouri State. He is 9-2 against Indiana State, including a mark of 2-1 against the Sycamores while serving as the head coach at Missouri State. Scouting Missouri State Missouri State is a member of the NCAA FCS Subdivision and competes in the MVFC. The Bears are 5-4 on the season, including a mark of 3-3 in the MVFC. The Bears are led by quarterback Cody Kirby, who threw two TD passes against Illinois State last week, giving him 36 for his career and tying Mitch Ware (1976-79) and Jeremy Hoog (1994-97) for the all-time MSU lead. Kirby threw for 248 yards in the game, marking his 13th career 200-yard output and fifth this season. Kirby also extended his streak to seven consecutive games with a TD pass and matched a career best with no interceptions for the second straight contest. A Little History This marks the 105th season of football at Indiana State, dating back to 1896. The University did not field teams from 1899 to 1900, 1908 or from 1910 to 1919. ISU owns an all-time record of 339-463-22 and is competing for the 24th consecutive season as a member of the MVFC. What’s Transpired Indiana State opened the season with a 26-20 overtime loss against Quincy at Memorial Stadium. The game drew regional attention, as 7,216 fans were in attendance. The Sycamores bounced out to a quick 17-0 lead in the first quarter against the Hawks - ISU’s largest lead over an opponent since 2004 -- but Quincy came back to knot the score at 20 with 43 seconds left in regulation. Darrius Gates paced the Sycamores with 102 yards on the ground and also threw a 75-yard touchdown pass as the offense showed spark early in the game. ISU enjoyed its closest game against a member of the NCAA Division I FBS Subdivision since 2003 with a 3010 loss at Louisville. Santino Davis recorded a pair of interceptions in falling to the BIG EAST opponent. The Sycamores were shut out in their third contest of the season against Eastern Illinois by a 31-0 count. It marked the first time ISU was shut out by the Panthers since 1962 and their 95 yards of total offense was the Sycamores’ lowest total since the 2003 campaign. Indiana State battled tough at No. 18 South Dakota State in the first half, but it wasn’t enough, as the Jackrabbits took it to the Sycamores late in the second quarter en route to a 41-0 win over ISU. ISU trailed just 3-0 in the waning moments of the first half, but a blocked punt and a touchdown with less than a minute remaining helped SDSU to the game’s momentum and the eventual victory. Senior Donye McCleskey recorded a season-best 15 tackles in defeat, plus his first interception of the season. ISU was shutout in back-to-back games for the first time since the 1999 season. The Sycamores were shutout for the third consecutive game, falling 28-0 to Youngstown State. The Penguins owned just a 7-0 lead in the fourth quarter as the Sycamores held YSU without a score for nine consecutive possessions and did not allow a first down to Youngstown in third stanza. Indiana State went over the 100-yard mark in total offense, but were not able to reach pay dirt, falling to 0-2 in league play. Indiana State defensive tackle turned fullback Rod Hardy got the Sycamores on the board in the third quarter of the Northern Iowa contest to break a 17-quarter streak without scoring a touchdown. The Sycamores fell to No. 3 nationally-ranked Panthers on Oct. 3 by the score of 62-7. ISU put on its best offensive performance of the season on the road against Illinois State as it scored a season-high 21 points versus the Redbirds, but the Sycamores fell 38-21. Ryan Roberts found the end zone twice for Indiana State and the Sycamores rolled up 354 yards of total offense, including a 37-yard scoring pass from Roberts to Bryant Kent in the final two minutes of the game. An Indiana State Win Over Missouri State Would...

• Give Indiana State its first victory over Missouri State since the 2006 season when ISU secured a 28-22 Homecoming victory over the Bears. • Be Indiana State’s first road victory over Missouri State since a 25-19 victory over the Bears in 2001. • Give Indiana State multiple victories in the Missouri Valley Football Conference since downing Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois in 2002. • Be the Sycamores’ first MVC road victory since a 21-14 victory at Southern Illinois in 2002. Indiana State then ended the nation’s longest losing streak with a 17-14 victory over Western Illinois. ISU had dropped each of its previous 33 games prior to a Homecoming victory against the Fighting Leathernecks. The Sycamores’ last victory prior to Saturday’s was against Missouri State in 2006. ISU improved to a perfect 6-0 all-time against WIU when playing on Homecoming at Memorial Stadium. The Sycamores fell to the No.3 nationally-ranked Southern Illinois last week by the score of 33-0. Indiana State mustered just 90 yards of total offense against SIU. Sycamores Have Three Of Top Six Tacklers In The League Indiana State redshirt freshman linebacker Aaron Archie ranks third in the MVFC with a 10.1 tackles per game average, which leads the Sycamores and is ranked 23rd nationally. He heads up a group of three Sycamore defensive starters who rank in the top six league-wide for tackles per game and are in the top 64 nationally. Behind Archie is Donye McCleskey, who averages 8.8 stops per contest and is fifth in the league and 48th in the country. Alex Sewall is sixth with an 8.4 tackles per game average, which ties for 64th in all of FCS football. Twice (In One Year) Would Be Nice! Indiana State won its first MVFC contest of the season on Oct. 24 in a 17-14 Homecoming victory over Western Illinois. The Sycamores travel to Missouri State this week and conclude the season on Nov. 14 against North Dakota State. If the Sycamores earn a victory in either of those contests, ISU will finish the season with multiple wins for the first time since the 2004 campaign and with multiple league victories for the first time since 2002. Ryan Roberts Named MVFC Offensive Player of the Week Sophomore quarterback Ryan Roberts was named the MVFC’s Offensive Player Of The Week following his superb showing in the victory over Western Illinois. Roberts rushed for 160 yards on the day -- the fourthmost in program history for a quarterback -- and recorded a school-record 91-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Additionally, Roberts scored in the final five minutes of the victory from four yards out to secure the win. He was the first Sycamore since Jake Shields in to score multiple touchdowns in consecutive weeks, as he also had a pair of rushing touchdowns at Illinois State on Oct. 17. Trey Interceptions The Sycamores recorded three interceptions against Western Illinois, including the first in the young careers of Andrew Blackmon and CJ Cook. Donye McCleskey also added in a pick as well, as the Sycamore defense stood tall in the 17-14 victory over Western Illinois. Indiana State had just four interceptions on the season prior to Saturday’s three picks against the Fighting Leathernecks, including the game clincher by Blackmon as time expired. They Don’t Call It A Streak … Now The Sycamores ended the nation’s longest losing streak with a 17-14 victory over Western Illinois. ISU had dropped each of its previous 33 games prior to its Homecoming victory against the Fighting Leathernecks. The Sycamores last victory prior to Saturday’s was in a Homecoming contest against Missouri State in 2006. ISU improved to a perfect 6-0 all-time against Western Illinois when playing on Homecoming at Memorial Stadium. The 33-game skid was the fourth-longest in college football history behind Prairie View (80 games), Columbia (54) and Northwestern (34) and was the third all-time in FCS football. We Are Mostly...Young Of the 84 players on the current Indiana State roster, a total of 65 student-athletes are underclassmen -- or just over 76 percent. There are 38 true or redshirt freshmen on the roster currently. A total of 19 studentathletes have seen their first collegiate action this season, including 18 true or redshirt freshmen. We Are Mostly...Young (PART 2) In research conducted nationally, it was determined that Indiana State has played 13 true freshmen this season, which is the second most in the nation behind Northwestern State. Included in that number is a nation-leading nine true freshmen who have started at least one contest during 2009. Facing the Nation’s Best The Sycamores are 8-69 all-time against FCS nationally-ranked opponents, including a mark of 6-50 against league members that are nationally ranked. Sycamores Against the MFVC Indiana State is in its 24th season as a member of the MVFC. ISU’s first season as a league member came in 1986 when it went 1-5 through a six-game league schedule. The Sycamores are 40-111 in MVFC contests and had lost each of their last 21 league matchups before downing Western Illinois earlier this season. Return To Sender Indiana State has been solid in special teams, as the punt return squad ranks 41st nationally with an 9.0 yards-per-return average. That mark is good enough for fourth in the MVFC. Individually, Darrius Gates averages 28.23 yards per kickoff return which is tops in the league and fifth-best nationally. As a team, the Sycamores average 20.49 yards per kick return, which is 51st nationally and in a league which boasts some of the best special teams in all of the FCS Subdivision, is fourth in the MVFC. BARRELLING IN ISU debuted a new jumbo package against No. 3 Northern Iowa in the Sycamores’ last game before the open week, and the benefactor was Rod Hardy, who has started every game this season at defensive tackle. Hardy, who recovered a UNI fumble to give the Sycamores a short field offensively, plunged into the end zone to give ISU its first offensive points since the second game of the season at Louisville. Hardy was the first ISU player since 2005 to score an offensive touchdown despite starting the game on defense, as Andy Jones scored on a pass reception that season against Western Kentucky in a game in which he also started at linebacker. Few Seniors Indiana State has just 10 players on its roster who are seniors. Of those, Mike Woods and Elliott Thomas are fifth-year seniors, while Donye McCleskey, Jeramie Gray, Jerry Calvert, Dan Millington, Pat Burke, and Bill McGrath are in their fourth year. Antoine Brown and Gabe Mullane transferred into the Sycamore program and are in their final season as well. Indiana State has the fourth-fewest seniors on a 2009 roster nationally. Working Overtime The Sycamores have played in 11 overtime contests since the rule was established for regular season games in the NCAA FCS Subdivision in 1996. The Sycamores are 6-5 in games that have used an extra period, including a 33-30 overtime win over Eastern Illinois in 2004.

The Last Time Against Missouri State … November 22, 2008 TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The 2008 Indiana State football season came to an end with a heartbreaking 2724 loss in overtime to the visiting Missouri State Bears in a Missouri Valley Football Conference game Saturday in ISU’s Memorial Stadium. With the loss, ISU falls to 0-12 on the season, while the Bears improved to 4-7 overall. “I thought our kids played extremely hard, especially in the second half,” head coach Trent Miles said. “At halftime, we challenged our players and lived up to the challenge in the second half.” Indiana State got the ball first in overtime with Baulio Martinez booting a 39-yard field goal. But Missouri State came right back, as Bears quarterback Cody Kirby rumbled 19 yards for the touchdown to give Missouri State the win. Missouri State took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, using just four plays to go 91 yards for the first touchdown of the game on a 16-yard run by Miguel Warren with 6:03 left. Matt Hottelman booted the point after for the Bears. In the second quarter, Kingjack Washington capped off a 12-play, 77-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run for Missouri State’s second touchdown of the game. Hottelman again booted the point after to give the Bears a 14-0 lead with 10:11 remaining in the first half. A bad snap on a punt attempt gave the Bears an opportunity for their third touchdown, starting from the Sycamore four-yard line. But Indiana State got the ball right back when Missouri State’s Washington was stripped of the ball by ISU’s Jayden Everett, who also recovered the fumble at the ISU five yard line. The Sycamores took advantage of the turnover, marching 95 yards in 14 plays to cut the Missouri State lead in half. Darrius Gates capped the drive with a seven-yard run around the right side and Braulio Martinez booted the point after as the Sycamores trailed 14-7 with 4:13 left in the third quarter. After holding Missouri State on their next possession, the Sycamores took over at their own 18-yard line and promptly marched down the field, going 82 yards in nine plays to tie the game on a one-yard run by Gates. The touchdown was set up by a 67-yard run by Gates that moved the ball down to the Bears five-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Four plays later, Gates took the ball over the left side on fourthand-one and stretched the ball across the goal line for the touchdown with 12:25 left. Martinez booted the extra point attempt to tie the game at 14-all. Indiana State got the ball back with less than two minutes to play and the Sycamores needed just 42 seconds to take the lead for the first time in the game. Starting from their own eight-yard line, Brock Lough ran 14 yards to the Indiana State 22 yard line. Gates broke free and rambled 77 yards down to the Missouri State one and then Ryan Roberts dove over the top of center Jack Byrne for the touchdown. Martinez’s point after kick made it 21-14 with 46 seconds left in the game. Missouri State came right back, scoring on a 19 yard pass from quarterback Cody Kirby to Chris Geisz on the final play of the game. Hottelman booted the point after to tie the game at 21 and send the game into overtime. “We got after the team at halftime,” Miles commented. “The first half was unacceptable. We had to challenge this team at halftime and our kids went out and played hard in the second half and had a good chance to win. Today we got beat by the better team, we got beat by a good coach.” Gates led the way for the Sycamores with a career-high 237 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the day. Gates became the first ISU runner to eclipse the 200 yard mark since 2006, when Tony West amassed 217 versus Murray State. C.J. Cook led the way for the Sycamores defense, recording a career-high 14 tackles, including three solo stops. Donye McCleskey and Jayden Everett each added 11 tackle for the Sycamores as well.

Trent Miles Head Coach

1-20 (2nd Year) Indiana State, 1987 Head coach Trent Miles enters his second year at the helm of the Indiana State football program in 2009. Miles was named the Sycamores’ 23rd head football coach on Dec. 4, 2007. In his inaugural season on the job, Miles had three players earn All-Missouri Valley Conference honors as Jayden Everett, Donye McCleskey and Alex Sewall all took Honorable Mention plaudits. Additionally, Sewall, Larry Carter and Ryan Roberts took MVFC All-Newcomer status. Everett recorded 102 total tackles on the season, which ranked in the nation’s top 20 and was in the top five in the MVFC. He also had a key forced fumble and recovery in the season finale against Missouri State that allowed Indiana State to comeback from down 14-0 to force overtime. Everett posted six games in which he recorded double digit tackles, including a season-high 18 stops on Homecoming versus South Dakota State. McCleskey posted 98 total tackles last season, including 53 total stops. In the conference opener against Illinois State, McCleskey was credited with a career-high 17 total tackles. Known as a big-play defensive threat, McCleskey recovered a fumble and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown at Youngstown State. He had four games in which he recorded at least 10 tackles, including 13 against South Dakota State, 11 in the season finale versus Missouri State, 10 at Western Illinois and the season-best 17 versus the Redbirds. Sewall was Indiana State’s top newcomer on defense with 90 total tackles, including 52 solo stops as he played in all 12 of the Sycamores’ contests this season. He notched a season-best nine tackles in five different contests: at Eastern Illinois, at Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, at North Dakota State and in the season finale versus Missouri State. Carter played in 10 games in 2009 and recorded 34 total tackles, including one for a loss and was credited with one half of a sack. He broke up four passes this season and recovered one fumble at Southern Illinois. In the conference opener against Illinois State, Carter posted a team-high eight tackles. Roberts played in all 12 games this year, including the final six as the Sycamore quarterback after playing the first six games on the defensive side of the ball. He completed 39-of-84 passes for 294 yards, including a long of 20 yards. Roberts was strong on the ground with 107 rushes for 194 yards, plus three rushing touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Roberts was credited with nine total tackles. He posted a season-high 59 rushing yards at Youngstown State and was 15-of-24 for 124 yards passing against South Dakota State. Running a well-rounded program is an important concept for Miles, as evidenced by a trio of Sycamores being named to the MVFC All-Academic squad. Those Sycamores making the second team were tight end Josh Jones and punter Gabe Mullane, while offensive lineman Jack Byrne was an honorable mention selection. Jones, who holds 3.92 GPA in Exercise Science, was the Sycamores’ top pass catching tight end as he hauled in 11 passes for 83 yards, an average of 7.5 yards per catch. Mullane, who has earned a 3.93 GPA in Physical Education, punted 82 times on the year for a total of 2,948 yards. He averaged 36.0 yards per kick and recorded a long punt of 66 yards. Mullane only had two touchbacks in 82 punts and forced 10 fair catches. He was able to pin the opposition inside their own 20-yard line a total of 17 times and recorded six punts of 50 yards or more. Byrne, who has a 3.15 GPA in Business, played and started in all 12 games for the Sycamores at the center position. The Sycamore offense gained 1,539 yards on the ground and reached the end zone eight times. Byrne was the leader of a team which also had 881 yards through the air and reached the end zone through the air three times. The ISU Football team is also very involved in community service, including working tirelessly across the Wabash Valley in June of 2008 helping victims of the floods in the area. The football players at ISU also are committed to teaching young children how to read and visiting with local hospitals to help children that are ill. Miles is a native of Terre Haute, Ind., and a 1987 graduate of Indiana State. Miles was a wide receiver at Indiana State from 1982-86, where his 1983 and 1984 squads each won nine games and advanced to the NCAA FCS playoffs. The 1984 Sycamores were ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the season. That team was inducted into the Indiana State University Hall of Fame on Sept. 7, 2002.

Prior to coming to Indiana State, Miles completed his third season as the Washington running backs coach in 2007 after having spent the previous three years on Tyrone Willingham’s staff at Notre Dame as the wide receivers coach. In 2007, Husky running back Louis Rankin rushed for 1,294 yards, becoming the first Washington player to tally a 1,000-yard rushing season since 1997. While at Notre Dame, he mentored future NFL standouts Maurice Stovall, Rhema McKnight and Arnaz Battle, as well as Jeff Samardzija, who is now playing professional baseball in the Chicago Cubs organization. Prior to coaching at Notre Dame, Miles worked under Willingham for one year at Stanford. That season Miles had the opportunity to coach some of the nation’s finest receivers including Luke Powell (whose 22.3yard average per catch set a school record) and Teyo Johnson (the 2001 Pacific-10 Co-Freshman of the Year and a second-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2003). Miles spent the 2000 campaign with the Green Bay Packers as an offensive assistant, working with the wide receivers and as a quality control coach. During his tenure with the Packers, he coached NFL all-pro receiver Antonio Freeman. Miles has 20 years of coaching experience on the collegiate level. He was the wide receivers coach at Fresno State for three years (1997-99), producing some of the greatest receivers in Bulldogs’ history. In 1999, two of his receivers, Rodney Wright and Charles Smith, combined to produce more than 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns on 120 receptions. Their production helped the Bulldogs to a share of the Western Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the Las Vegas Bowl. He also recruited and coached Bernard Barien of the Minnesota Vikings. Throughout his career, Miles has coached on both sides of the ball including wide receivers, defensive backs and linebackers. Miles began his coaching career at Indiana State in 1987, tutoring the wide receivers and defensive backs as a graduate assistant. Another graduate assistant position followed at New Mexico (1988-89), where he worked with the receivers and linebackers. Miles then moved on to Oklahoma in 1990, working with the wide receivers as a graduate assistant. Following four seasons as an assistant at Northern Illinois (1991-93 as receivers coach, 1994 with defensive backs), Miles headed west to Hawaii for two seasons (1995-96), where he spent a season each with the wide receivers and defensive backs. Miles earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Indiana State in 1987. He was born July 29, 1963, in Terre Haute, Ind. Miles married the former Bridget Hogan on July 10, 2004. They have three daughters, Kaylee, Anna, and Charlie Elizabeth.

Game 1: Quincy Recap TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State fell to Quincy by the score of 26-20 in overtime on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams in front of 7,216 fans at Memorial Stadium. The Sycamores opened the game with a barrage, taking a 17-0 lead out of the gate. ISU sophomore kicker Braulio Martinez hit a 40-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 7:44 left in the first quarter. Martinez’s kick capped a 10-play, 52-yard drive that took 4:59 off the clock. The lead grew on a five-yard pass to sophomore Ryan Roberts from Stutzriem for a 10-0 advantage with 5:50 left in the opening stanza. The four-play, nine-yard scoring drive was set up by a Sam Donatucci fumble which was forced by Nate Brown and recovered by Aaron Archie. Indiana State’s lead ballooned to 17-0 on the biggest play of the game when tailback Darrius Gates hit Bryant Kent on a 75-yard scoring strike with 1:01 left in the first period, a play which was a perfectly executed tailback pass. The Sycamores’ 17-0 advantage was its largest since a 28-7 lead over Illinois State on October 2, 2004. Quincy cut the Sycamore lead down to 17-3 with a 22-yard field goal by Alex Beard with 11:12 to go in the second quarter. The lead went down to 17-6 on a 30-yard field goal by Beard with 10:12 to go in the third quarter, the period’s only score.

Game One

That set up a wild fourth quarter in which Tyler Truttmann caught a 12-yard pass from Donatucci and then Donatucci found Chris Jenkins in the end zone for the two-point conversion to make it 17-14 with 14:09 to go.

Donatucci knotted the score with 43 seconds left at 20 with a one-yard plunge into the end zone. Beard’s kick failed after Quincy was flagged for a false start and had to make its attempt from the eight-yard line instead of the three. Indiana State was unable to score and even had to survive a last second attempt by Quincy as they gained possession with three seconds left on the clock. Quincy won the toss to begin overtime and elected to play defense. The Hawks held as the Sycamores lost the ball on a botched shotgun snap back to Stutzriem.

Quincy marched down to the one-yard line and the Sycamore defense held on first and goal, but on second and goal, Donatucci plunged in from a yard out to earn the 26-20 overtime victory. Gates paced Indiana State with 102 yards on the ground while Stutzriem was 9-of-18 for 60 yards with an interception. Gates was the team’s leading passer with 75 yards in the air on the trick play in the first quarter. Ryan Roberts caught a team-high three passes for 18 yards while Kent paced the team with his 75-yard scoring catch from Gates. Defensively, Donye McCleskey and Aaron Archie each had 10 tackles on the night while Archie added a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery. Nate Brown paced ISU with three tackles for loss and forced a fumble.

Game 2: Louisville Recap LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Indiana State took a 7-3 first-quarter lead but was held to 101 yards on the night by the Louisville defense in a 30-10 loss at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium Saturday night. In front of 39,344 fans, the Sycamores dropped to 0-2 on the season, while UL improved to 1-0. The Sycamore defense proved that Louisville wouldn’t be the only defensive force on the evening as Indiana State put the stops to the Cardinal offense as well in their season opener. ISU defensive back Santino Davis highlighted the game for ISU by posting a pair of interceptions – the most over any FBS opponent in ISU history – including one that set up a touchdown drive that gave the Sycamores an early 7-3 lead. Davis’ two interceptions in one game are the fifth-best showing in school history, and is the best performance since John Allman against Illinois State on Oct. 27, 1979. Louisville produced a balanced offensive attack in its season opener, as Victor Anderson rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Justin Burke had a 17-for-31 passing night for 223 yards, and Ryan Payne also kicked three field goals of 28, 21 and 31 yards, respectively. For the Sycamores, Antoine Brown led the ground game with 14 yards on nine carries, and Darrius Gates produced eight yards on 10 tries. Larry Lacotti had three receptions for 26 yards, while Ryan Roberts totaled 24 yards on two receptions. Defensively, Aaron Archie had the most tackles of any player on either team with 9.5.

Louisville jumped on the board first with a field goal by Payne at 9:44 in the first quarter. The Sycamores responded with an interception by Davis just before the 6:00 mark, grabbing a Burke pass at the Louisville 33-yardline and returned it four yards to the UL 29. The pick set up a touchdown drive led by ISU quarterback Chris Stutzriem, who guided a seven-play, 29-yard drive. The sophomore faced a third-and-goal situation from the 3-yard-line before a short touchdown run – his first rushing TD of the season – with 1:30 remaining. Braulio Martinez added an extra-point kick to give ISU a 7-3 lead to finish the first quarter.

Game 3: Eastern Illinois Recap TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State fell by the score of 31-0 to Eastern Illinois in its final non-conference tilt of the 2009 campaign in front of 2,977 fans at Memorial Stadium. Offensively, Indiana State was led in the passing by redshirt freshman Travis Johnson, who made his first career start. Johnson was 8-of-15 for 63 yards with an interception in the contest. Chris Stutzreim, who had started the first two contests, came on in relief and was 3-of-7 for eight yards. On the ground, Antoine Brown paced the Sycamores for the first time this season with 10 rushes for 29 yards while Darrius Gates had six rushes for nine yards. Brown also was solid out of the backfield for the Sycamores, hauling in four passes for 29 yards while Gates had a trio of catches for 12 yards. Defensively, freshman Jacolby Washington made 10 tackles while Santino Davis had seven tackles, including a pair for losses. Eastern Illinois recorded their first score of the game at the 9:30 mark in the first quarter when Chavar Watkins raced into the end zone from 20 yards out for a quick 7-0 lead. The Panther advantage ballooned to 14-0 just 18 seconds later on a 26-yard interception touchdown return of a Johnson pass with 9:12 left in the opening stanza. Eastern Illinois added another score on a 54-yard touchdown run by Williams with 4:41 left to go in the opening half to make it 21-0. The Panthers got an extra three points heading into halftime on a 31-yard field goal by Austin Signor as time expired. EIU got the ball back after a Johnson fumble with 26 seconds left on the clock and the Sycamores’ Daniel Millington sacked EIU quarterback Jake Christensen two plays later with the ball coming loose. Christensen was ruled down before the fumble so the Panthers retained possession and Signor kicked the field goal to send the teams into the locker room with the score 24-0. Williams added a 30-yard touchdown run with 7:58 left in the third quarter to give EIU a 31-0 lead. The Sycamore offense was limited to just 95 yards of total offense in the game, marking the first contest that Indiana State did not record at least 100 yards since a 45-10 loss on Nov. 1, 2003 at Missouri State. Redshirt freshman quarterback Travis Johnson, making his second career start, had an 11-for-25 passing night for 65 yards and no interceptions. On the ground, Antoine Brown had 12 rushes for 13 yards, while Darrius Gates rushed seven times for 20 yards. Michael Mardis hauled in four receptions for 21 yards. Game 5: Youngstown State Recap TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State Sycamores fell 28-0 to Youngstown State in front of 3,557 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Sycamores were paced offensively by sophomore Ryan Roberts, who returned his role as the team’s quarterback versus the Penguins. Roberts, who started the campaign as a wide receiver, went under center and was 11-of-18 passing for 78 yards. Darrius Gates led the charges offensively with 11 rushes for 51 yards. Roberts was solid on the ground as he compiled 14 rushes for 18 yards. Leading the Sycamores in receiving was Larry Lacotti, who hauled in three catches for six yards. Bryant Kent had a pair of receptions for 22 yards, including a game-best 17-yard catch off the arms of Roberts. Gates had 18 yards on a pair of receptions during the game as well. The Sycamores appeared to be ready to knot the game at seven midway through the second quarter when the Sycamroes took over at the YSU 31-yard line with 4:24 left before the half. A fumble inside the 20-yard line stymied ISU’s best chance to score in the contest. The Penguins took the ball down to the ISU 16-yard line, but Stephen Blose missed the first of two field goal attempts to keep the score at 7-0 heading into the locker room. Game 6: Northern Iowa Recap CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Indiana State football team fell 62-7 to Northern Iowa in front of 14,860 fans at the UNI-Dome on Saturday evening. Quarterback Ryan Roberts started his second game of the season for the Sycamores, completing six passes for 60 yards and adding 21 yards on the ground. Antoine Brown totaled 10 rushes for 10 yards, while Bryant Kent led ISU’s receivers with a pair of catches for 35 yards. Gabe Mullane had eight punts, averaging 32.1 yards per kick, including a long of 48 yards. He also pinned the Panthers inside the 20-yard line twice. Koby Kraemer, in just his second game of the year after a preseason foot injury, returned nine kicks over 154 yards. Game 7: Illinois State Recap NORMAL, Ill. -- Quarterback Ryan Roberts had two touchdowns and Indiana State totaled a season-high 354 yards of offense, but it was not enough to push the Sycamores past Illinois State in a 38-21 loss at Hancock Stadium Saturday afternoon. Roberts, in his third start of the season, had a touchdown pass and a pair of rushing scores himself on the day. The sophomore is the first Sycamore with two scores in one game since Darrius Gates had two touchdowns against Missouri State on Nov. 22, 2008. Roberts completed 10 of his 16 pass attempts for a season-best 136 yards, including a 39-yard toss to Bryant Kent. Antoine Brown had a solid day for the Sycamore ground game, rushing 102 yards on 17 carries. Kent led the ISU receiving corps with four grabs for 97 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Game 8: Western Illinois Recap TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State Sycamores used a pair of touchdown runs by sophomore quarterback Ryan Roberts to end the nation’s longest losing streak at 33 games with a thrilling 17-14 come-from-behind victory over Western Illinois on Homecoming in front of 6,028 fans at electric Memorial Stadium. The Sycamores got 160 yards rushing from Roberts along with his second consecutive week of reaching the end zone twice in a game. His 91-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was the longest scoring rush in the history of the program, topping the previous mark of an 85-yard run by Todd Yokem against the Leathernecks in 1989. The victory was clinched after Roberts plunged into the end zone from the four-yard line to cap a 15-play, 80-yard drive with 4:12 left in the game. The game was sealed when freshman Andrew Blackmon picked off a Wil Lunt pass as time expired. Western Illinois opened the scoring with a first-quarter touchdown at 4:12 - a one-yard run by Dre Gibbs - to go up 7-0.

Roberts led ISU with 160 rushing yards and his pair of scores, while Antoine Brown added 58 yards of his own on the ground. Brock Lough also had two catches for 23 yards. Jacoby Washington also had a double-digit day with 12 tackles, with one sack and two tackles for a loss of eight yards, while CJ Cook finished with 11 tackles, a tackle for loss and a 25-yard interception. Additionally, Ben Obaseki and Rod Hardy had a pair of key sacks of Lunt in second-to-last drive of the game, followed by an interception by Andrew Blackmon to cap the Leathernecks’ final quarter effort. Game 9: Southern Illinois Recap TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Just a week after the Indiana State football team snapped a 33-game losing streak when they defeated Western Illinois on Homecoming, the Sycamores squared off against No. 3 nationally-ranked Southern Illinois at Memorial Stadium. The Salukis proved why they are the third-ranked team in the nation by shutting out the Sycamores 33-0 in front of 4,582 fans on a cloudy day. The Sycamores were able to contain the Salukis for the entire first quarter, as the game remained scoreless after fifteen minutes of play. Southern Illinois was able to turn on the heat during the second quarter however, scoring three touchdowns with the help of lead runningback Deji Karim, who rushed for 32 yards in the second quarter alone, and later finished with 87 yards. The half ended with a 21-0 score in favor of Southern Illinois. Following halftime, the Salukis received a second rushing touchdown from their quarterback Paul McIntosh, driving the Saluki lead to 28-0. In his first career start, McIntosh finished the game 15-of-22 with 159 yards, including 57 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The Sycamores were able to end the third quarter on a positive note, when freshman Andrew Blackmon intercepted Bobby Brenneisen’s attempt at a touchdown pass at the three yard line.

Senior Antoine Brown led the Sycamore offensive attack with 36 rushing yards on 18 attempts while sophomore Ryan Roberts was 7-of-18 for 52 yards. Junior Bryant Kent caught three passes for 22 yards. Defensively, the Sycamores were led by freshman Jacolby Washington with 10 tackles, including a career-high three for loss. Rod Hardy and Lawrence Young added multiple tackles for loss while Nate Brown had one as well. Blackmon posted an inteception for the second consecutive week and added a fumble recovery.
