The Wheeling, Ill., native was also credited with a pancake block and two knockdowns against the Bears as the Redbirds racked up a season-high 178 yards on the ground thanks to Cliffton Gordon’s career-high 122 yards rushing. Bledsoe and his teammates also did not allow a sack in the game, marking the third time this season the unit has accomplished that feat.
For All the Marbles
For the first time since 2005, the league will have a winner-take-all contest as South Dakota State hosts Southern Illinois on Saturday. The winning team will claim at least a share of the regular-season title and the conference’s automatic bid into the FCS playoffs. The game will be the first meeting between two teams with 6-0 league records.
The Last Time ...?
The last time the league had a decisive Saturday similar to next weekend’s SDSUSIU game in Brookings was in 2005, when UNI claimed the league’s automatic bid on the final weekend of the regular season with a 25-24 victory against SIU. That forced a three-way co-championship and UNI won a tiebreaker with the tri-champs (SIU, YSU).
Another Top-25 Battle
Southern Illinois and South Dakota State play one another this week, marking the third time this year that two ranked league teams will face one another. There have been 83 previous games in which two league teams ranked in the Top 25 played one another. Of those 83, 20 times both teams were in the Top 10. Two meetings have occurred in the playoffs. The home team is 5132, while the higher-ranked team is 45-38. Ranked vs. Ranked, This Season Oct. 17 -- #5 Southern Illinois 27, at #2 UNI 20 Oct. 24 -- #11 S. Dakota State 24, #6 UNI 14

Perfect Seasons in the League
In 2007, UNI (6-0) became the ninth team in league history to win the conference title with an undefeated record. Before that, Southern Illinois (2004) was the last to do it. Illinois State (1999), Western Illinois (1988 and 1997) and UNI (1985, 1987, 1994, and 1996) have also gone unbeaten. SIU in 2004 was the only to go 7-0; UNI was 5-0 in 1985 and 1996; and the others were 6-0.
Behind the Eight Ball
The Missouri Valley Football Conference has had at least two eight-game winners for 15-straight seasons. In 23 previous Valley Football seasons, 46 teams have won eight or more games during the regular season, and all but five have made the playoffs: UNI (in 1989 and 1999), WIU (in 1994), and YSU (in 2001 and 2005) are the only league teams to win eight and not make it.
Road Warriors
Last weekend all four league teams won on the road in conference play, marking the first time since Nov. 22 of last year that it had happened. Notably, it also happened on Oct. 25, 2008, but before that the league had not gone 4-0 on the road in conference play since 2004. The league also was perfect on the road on Nov. 3, 2007, although only three league games were played.

Winning on the Road
In 2007, UNI set a league record by winning six road games. Only 12 teams in league history have won five road games in a season and all of them reached the playoffs. No previous league team had claimed six road victories in a season, although both Western Kentucky (2002) and Youngstown State (1997) won six away from home in a season as each won the national title in those respective seasons. Southern Illinois (2-0) and SDSU (3-0) are perfect on the MVFC road this year, while Missouri State has won four league road games in a row, dating back to last year. SIU’s road winning streak in league games is at five games. Harbor Approaches MSU Mark
TE Clay Harbor posted his third 100-yard receiving game of the season -- and second in three games -- in Saturday’s game against Illinois State, pulling in eight passes for 102 yards. His eight receptions matched a career high and pushed him into first place on Missouri State’s career pass receptions list at 138. His 47 receptions this season is already a career high and makes him just the second MSU player to record three seasons with 40 catches or more (Jason Cannon, 1995-96-97). He has at least one pass reception in 31-straight games. That streak is now the second-longest string in Bears’ history (the record is 33 by Jason Cannon, 1995-97). It’s the eighth-best streak in the league’s 25-year history. Two Reach 1,000 Yards
Only 10 times in the league’s 25-year history has a league RB reached 1,000 yards in seven or fewer games. Pat Paschall of North Dakota State got 1,017 yards in his first seven games, while Southern Illinois’ Deji Karim had 1,025 yards through the Salukis’ first seven contests. It marks just the second time in league history that two RBs reached 1,000 yards through seven games during the same season (the other coming in 2006). Year Player

National Rushing Leaders
Western Illinois RB Herb Donaldson, the league’s all-time leading rusher, led the nation in rushing and scoring as a senior in 2008. This year, the league has four candidates who are currently challenging for the nation’s rushing title, as NDSU’s Pat Paschall leads the nation while SIU’s Deji Karim ranks No. 2. Through seven games, no Redbird
had rushed for 100 yards or more in a game. Cliffton Gordon had 122 yards on 30 carries against the Bears. Both marks were new career highs for Gordon, who just missed out on a 100yard effort earlier this season against Austin Peay (96).
Stopping The Run
Illinois State entered Saturday’s game giving up 223 yards per game on the ground to its opponents. However, that all changed as the Redbirds held the Bears to just 31 yards on 28 carries in a 24-14 win in Springfield. The 31 yards were the second fewest given up by the Redbirds defense, which held Austin Peay to just 14 yards on 32 carries in a 38-7 win.
Look What I Found
ISU TE Brandon Venson stepped under a deflected hail-mary pass on the final play of the first half to score the go-ahead touchdown and give ISU a 21-14 lead at the half. The TD catch was the first of Venson’s career and the second of the game for QB Matt Brown, who has now thrown for two touchdowns in four-straight games. Indiana State won its first MVFC contest of the season on October 24 in a 17-14 Homecoming victory over Western Illinois. The Sycamores travel to Missouri State this week and conclude the season on Nov. 14 against North Dakota State. If the Sycamores earn a victory in either of those contest, ISU will finish the season with multiple wins for the first time since the 2004 campaign and with multiple league victories for the first time since 2002.
In research conducted nationally last week, it was determined that Indiana State has played 13 true freshmen this season, which is the second most in the nation, only behind Northwestern State. Included in that number is a nationleading nine true freshmen who have started at least one contest during the 2009 campaign.
Archie Ranks No. 3
Indiana State redshirt freshman LB Aaron Archie ranks third in the league with a 10.1 tackles per game average, which leads the Sycamores and is ranked 23rd nationally. He heads up a group of three Sycamore defensive starters, which rank in the top six league-wide for tackles per game and are in the top 64 nationally. Behind Archie is Donye McCleskey (8.8) and sophomore Alex Sewall (8.4).

Schedule Strength
UNI has suffered three losses this season but the combined record of the teams the Panthers have lost to is 23-2. Iowa is ranked No. 4 in the latest BCS standings and has a perfect 8-0 record. Both Southern Illinois and South Dakota State enter this week’s action with identical 7-1 records.
Senior Laden Line
The Panthers’ offensive line has been vital to the team’s success through seven games. Led by five starting seniors (Austin Howard, Nate Herrig, Austin Steichen, Jason Fiacco, and Jordan Limbaugh), UNI has only allowed seven total sacks on the season. Not only are the men up front keeping the Panthers from moving backwards, they have also been a force in the ground game. UNI’s 195.9 yards rushing per contest is the 11thbest mark in all of FCS football.
Farley is Perfect vs. YSU
UNI and head coach Mark Farley have won eight straight games against Youngstown State, including a pair of one-point victories in each of the past two seasons. Summers’ Impressive Starts
Senior quarterback Brandon Summers has been extremely sharp in the first halves of the last four games. Summers has completed 44-of-52 passes (84.6 percent) for 407 yards and three touchdowns.
Wins vs. Losses
The difference between winning and losing can pretty much be dictated by turnovers and red-zone performance so far this year for the Guins. In the four victories, YSU has caused 14 turnovers while giving the ball up just five times. In the red zone of those victories, YSU is 14-of-18 (78 percent) while its opponents are 5-for-9 (56 percent). In the four defeats, YSU has committed 10 turnovers while causing just two. In the red zone, the Guins are 0-of-6 while opponents are a 14-of-15, including 10 touchdowns. Also, in the wins, YSU has scored 18 touchdowns compared to just two in its four losses.
Dependable Duo
Wide receivers Donald Jones and Dominique Barnes have combined for 99 receptions, 1,067 yards and eight touchdowns this season. In their two years together (20 games), they have 168 receptions for 1,945 yards and scored 18 times. Jones has 55 receptions this year, the most in a season by a Guin since 1999.
