Championship Tussle?
UNI (3-0) hosts Southern Illinois (3-0) this Saturday in Cedar Falls. The winner of the SIU-UNI game has won the league in six of the past eight years. Since 2001, the two teams have combined for 11 playoff bids, four semifinal berths and one trip to the national championship game (UNI-2005). The league’s other perfect team so far - South Dakota State (3-0) - hosts North Dakota State this weekend (and the Jackrabbits also have home games later with UNI and SIU.)
Have to Stop Meeting Like This
UNI and Southern Illinois play one another this week, marking the first time this year that two ranked league teams will face one another. There have been 81 previous games in which two league teams ranked in the top 25 played one another. Of those 81, 19 times the meeting involved teams that were both ranked in the Top 10 at the same time. Two meetings have occurred in the playoffs. The home team has been 50-31, while the higher-ranked team is 45-36.

4-0 League Starts Important
A league team has started conference play with a 4-0 record on 24 occasions. All but one (Western Kentucky in 2005) finished second or better in the league standings. Nineteen of the 24 with 4-0 or better starts earned playoff berths, while 17 won the league title.
Doing It On Purpose
Southern Illinois’ Deji Karim had a personal-high 310 yards of all-purpose yardage in the Salukis’ 43-23 win against Illinois State. Karim’s figure ties for 14th-best all-time, and is the second-best this year in the MVFC. Karim already has 1,139 all-purpose yards through five games. He’s on an 11-game pace of 2,506, which would be a league record (SIU’s Arkee Whitlock had 2,330 yards in 13 games in 2006.) 410, Steven Rush, MSU, vs. Illinois State, 2003 373, Aaron Stecker, WIU, vs. S. 2009 Missouri Valley Football Conference Weekly Release (Oct. 12) Happy Birthday To Us
Founded in 1985 as the Gateway Football Conference, the Missouri Valley Football Conference is celebrating its 25th season of FCS football in 2009. Fan voting is being conducted to help select a “Silver Anniversary Team,” recognizing the league’s all-time greats. Voting can be accessed at www. valley-football25.org. Fans can also vote to determine an Offensive and Defensive MVP of the league’s All-Select NFL Team.
Karim Goes Long Distance
RB Deji Karim of Southern Illinois reeled off the longest TD run in SIU history -- 93 yards -- against Illinois State. It’s the thirdlongest rush in league history. Coupled with his 92-yard jaunt against Western Illinois this year, Karim is now the only player in conference history with two 90+ rushes. The league has had three 90-yard TD runs this year (including Pat Paschall’s 91-yard scurry against Wagner). Longest Rushing Plays, MVFC History
Flag Football
The UNI-North Dakota State contest on Oct. 10 featured a combined 27 penalties for a combined 272 yards, but neither team established a league record in either category. Western Illinois holds the all-time record for penalty yards, as the Leathernecks had 228 penalty yards in a game against Morgan State in 2008. Four different teams share the league record for most penalties in a game, with 18. Last week, UNI was penalized 14 times for 121 yards, while NDSU was flagged 13 times for 151 yards.
Two Approach 1,000 Yards
Only eight times in the league’s 24-year history has a back reached 1,000 yards in seven or fewer games. Pat Paschall of North Dakota State has 869 yards in his first six games, while Southern Illinois’ Deji Karim has 834 yards in five games. Year Player

The Sycamores are 39-109 in MVFC contests and have lost each of their last 20 league matchups. ISU’s last victory over a member of the league came on Oct. 21, 2006, against Missouri State (28-22). The Sycamores’ last road victory over a MVFC opponent came on Nov. 9, 2002, at Southern Illinois, a 21-14 ISU victory.

A total of 19 student-athletes have seen their first collegiate action this season, including 18 true or redshirt freshmen.

Road Warriors
Missouri State has won four of its last six road games against FCS opponents. This season, the Bears are 1-1 overall away from Plaster Field, including the season opener at Arkansas, but have claimed two straight road wins against FCS teams. Against this week’s opponent Western Illinois, the Bears are 7-7 all-time at Hanson Field, while Terry Allen is 3-2 there.
Measuring Stick
In Saturday’s 24-17 loss against South Dakota State, the Bears outgained the visiting Jackrabbits, 404 to 344. MSU has been outgained in two of its wins this season.
Harbor Continues to Climb
TE Clay Harbor had six more receptions, giving him 119 catches for his career as he moved into the No. 3 spot on the school’s career receiving list, just 18 shy of tying the all-time MSU record (137). This season, he has 13 more receptions and 65 more yards than New Hampshire’s Scott Sicko, the 2008 first-team AP All-America tight end.
