Pick Six
Illinois State senior CB Chris Garrett
nabbed his second career interception in Saturday’s loss to South Dakota State and turned it into his first career TD. The 30-yard interception return for a touchdown was the Redbirds’ first defensive touchdown since Jesse Caesar’s 45-yard interception return in the playoffs at Eastern Illinois in 2006. The Redbirds have intercepted a pass in all four games this season and have seven picks as a team.
First For Everything
Illinois State freshman QB Matt Lancaster scrambled for a seven-yard touchdown late in the Redbirds 38-17 loss to South Dakota State Saturday. The score was the first of any kind for Lancaster and marked the first offensive TD scored against the nationally-ranked Jackrabbits in their first three games.
On Target
Illinois State has completed 104 passes, twice the amount of their opposition. The 26.0 completions per game have the Redbirds on pace to finish with one of the highest single-season totals in school history. The 1999 Redbirds hold the current mark with 295 but played an extended 14-game season because of a deep playoff run. That squad averaged 21.07 completions per game. In 1996, the Redbirds completed 244 passes in 11 games (22.18).

Taking On Ranked Foes
Indiana State will face nationally ranked UNI this Saturday. ISU will be looking to down its first top-25 opponent since downing No. 19 Western Illinois on October 23, 1999. The Sycamores are 8-67 all-time against FCS nationally-ranked opponents, including a mark of 6-48 against league members that are nationally ranked.
Mullane Approaches Mark
Gabe Mullane was extremely busy against Youngstown State as he averaged 37.5 yards per kick on 10 attempts. His longest boot on the busy day was 54 and he pinned YSU inside their own 20-yard line once and only had one touchback in the 10 attempts. His 10 punts were just two shy of the school record of 12. For the season he has punted 35 times and has pinned the opposition deep in their own territory (inside the 20) a total of eight times, or 22.8 percent of his attempts.
Defense Shuts Down YSU
The Sycamore defense held YSU to just seven points into the fourth quarter, continuing to improve as the season progresses. In fact, the Sycamore defense did not surrender a first down in the entire third quarter against the Penguins. The Sycamores forced YSU into nine consecutive drives without surrendering a score, spanning from the 5:37 mark of the first quarter until the 10:03 mark of the fourth.

Saffold Steps Up
Sophomore WR Jermaine Saffold has emerged as one of the Bears’s top receivers over the team’s last two games. During that span, he has seven catches for 91 yards, second on the team only to tight end Clay Harbor. Saffold earned his first career start in Saturday’s game against Northern Iowa.
Yawning in Youngstown
With last year’s 42-28 win over the Penguins at Plaster Field in Springfield, Missouri State improved to 2-11 all-time against Youngstown State. Even though the Bears have won two of the last five meetings in the series, MSU has never won in Youngstown in six previous tries and has been outscored 217 (36.2) to 82 (13.7) on the road.
Harbor Cruise
TE Clay Harbor posted a game and season-high seven receptions against Northern Iowa, giving him 107 career catches and pushing him to sixth on the Bears’ career receptions list. Harbor needs 30 receptions over the team’s final seven games to catch career leader Chance Thurman (1996-99). His 1,326 receiving yards ranks 10th all-time at Missouri State.

Success in the MVFC
Slow Starts Rare
with 7.2 seconds remaining in the game, UNI had scored 124 straight points against its last three opponents. Following a South Dakota flea-flicker for a touchdown pass in week two, UNI tallied 59 consecutive points against the Coyotes. UNI then tallied a 30-0 shutout win over Saint Francis. The Panthers scored the first 35 points of Saturday’s game against the Bears.
Strong Defense
Pat Paschall rushed a career-high 28 times for 150 yards in North Dakota State’s 24-14 loss at No. 8 Southern Illinois. He has rushed for over 100-yards four times this season and eight times in his career. Paschall remained ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division I FCS in rushing, averaging 159.75 yards per game and is 5th in all-purpose yards (189.75 ypg).
North Dakota State starts the season 1-3 for the first time since the Bison started 1-4 2002. Three of the first four games for the Bison this year have been on the road.
Career Day for Holloway
Sophomore wide receiver Warren Holloway made a career-high five receptions for 63 yards. His previous best was four catches achieved twice this season. Holloway leads North Dakota State with 14 receptions for 186 yards (13.3 ypc).
A First For Ebel
North Dakota State offensive tackle Gerry Ebel recovered a blocked field goal attempt in the end zone for a touchdown. Southern Illinois’ Chance Coda blocked Shawn Bibeau’s 25-yard field goal attempt. However, another SIU defensive player touched the ball past the line of scrimmage and Ebel fell on the loose ball in the end zone.

What a Defense
UNI has held its opposition to 31 points through the first four games of the season for a 7.8 per game average. The Panthers gave up 17 points to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the first week of the season and have allowed only 14 points to FCS competition. UNI is allowing only 238.2 yards per game, which ranks among the top-15 teams in the nation.
Herring is a Triple Threat
Jarred Herring has proven to be a triple threat this season as he has scored a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a kick return touchdown. Herring scored on a three-yard touchdown run against Missouri State in the Panthers’ 35-7 victory over the Bears. Herring returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown in UNI’s 30-0 win over Saint Francis (9/19). And he has also caught a 75-yard TD pass in the 66-7 win over South Dakota (9/12).

The Jackrabbits have won their two MVFC openers by a combined score of 81-7, defeating Youngstown State, 40-7, last season and Indiana State 41-0 this year. The Jackrabbits are 3-0 for the first time since 2000. Through three games, SDSU has outscored its opponents, 123-23, and out-rushed its opponents, 518-94. The Jackrabbits lead the nation in scoring defense and rushing defense, and rank No. 2 in total defense and No. 3 in pass efficiency defense. Illinois State scored a TD with 10 seconds, marking the first TD allowed by the SDSU defense this season.

Glazier Leads on Defense
Against Stephen F. Austin, Anthony D’Astice tipped a Jeremy Moses pass into the hands of Kyle Glazier for the second interception of his career and Leatherneck possession. Glazier led Western’s defense in the game against the Lumberjacks with 13 total tackles, including one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Glazier has compiled 30 total tackles this season and is the Leathernecks leading tackler.
Streak Snapped
Stephen F. Austin was the first game in nine games that the Leatherneck defense did not force a fumble.
NFL Pipeline
Western Illinois annually has one of the country’s highest number of alumni on active NFL rosters. Six of the last seven Super Bowl championship teams have included former Leathernecks. Super Bowl XLII featured a Leatherneck on each sideline - Giants starting OG Rich Seubert and Patriots starting safety Rodney Harrison. The newest Leathernecks in the league for the 2009 season are Jason Williams and Herb Donaldson. Williams was the first FCS player taken in the 2009 NFL Draft, selected as the Dallas Cowboys’ first pick of the draft. Donaldson went as an undrafted free agent to the New Orleans Saints. No Fumbles Lost
The Penguins are one of seven teams on the FCS level who have not lost a fumble so far this season. The Guins are joined by Brown, GardnerWebb, Lafayette, New Hampshire, Princeton and Tennessee Tech.
Interceptions Up
Youngstown State is tied for eighth in the FCS with seven interceptions after four games. The Guins are averaging nearly two interceptions per game. It is a dramatic improvement from last year when they had 12 in 12 games. Only three times since 2001 has YSU finished the year with more interceptions then games played. The Guins had 18 in 11 games in 2005, 13 in 12 games in 2003 and 14 in 11 games in 2001.
INT for TD in Two Straight
The Penguins have returned interceptions for touchdowns in two consecutive games -- Andre Elliott 30 yards at Northeastern and Na’eem Outler 37 yards at Indiana State. It is the first time since 2006 that the Guins returned interceptions for scores in consecutive games. The school record for interceptions returned for touchdowns in a year is three set in 1991. The program has had two INT returns for scores in 2006, 1997, 1994 and 1977.
