High   Domino recorded a game-high 11 tackles, including a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss, in South Dakota State’s 44-6 victory over Georgia Southern on Sept. 19. It marked the first-ever win against Georgia Southern for South Dakota State (in four tries). First Things First

The Sept. 19 start date of the conference schedule is early for the league, but nowhere near the earliest in MVFC annals. The earliest date for a conference game was Aug. 30 -- and that’s happened twice previously. Notably, the conference season has only started earlier than Sept. 16 three times since 1990 (Western Illinois hosted Western Kentucky in the Hilltoppers first league game in 2001.) Last year, two league games were played before Sept. 16. Aug. 30, 1986 -- Eastern Illinois at Illinois State Aug. 30, 2001 -- Western Ky. at Western Illinois Sept. 1, 1990 -- Southern Illinois at Northern Iowa Sept. 3, 1988 -- Southern Illinois at Western Illinois Sept. 6, 1986 -- Missouri State at Illinois State 4Sept. 6, 2008 -- Youngstown State at SDSU Sept. 7, 1985 -- Missouri State at Southern Illinois*   *first-ever conference game

Wrapping It Up, Almost

After this weekend (Sept. 19), only three regular-season non-conference games remain. So far, the Missouri Valley Football Conference has combined for a 5-12 nonconference record, but that includes eight games at FBS sites. In 2008, the MVFC had an 11-8 record at home against non-conference teams while posting just a 3-12 mark away from home.

Missouri Valley vs. Ohio Valley

Two league games this week are against a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. Since 1985, the MVFC is 102-52-1 against the OVC, including a 2-2 record in 2009. Valley Football has a streak of seven-straight .500+ seasons against the OVC, going 38-15 in that span. Notably, Valley Football teams have won seven-straight playoff meetings against OVC members, dating back to 2001.

Tuning In

One game this week will be on a regional cable system on Saturday, Sept. 19:   Austin Peay at ILS (Comcast Spotlight), 6:30 p.m. CT

Saving Grace

QB Pat Grace threw for 445 yards in UNI’s 66-7 win against South Dakota. It marks just the 20th time in league history that a QB had thrown for 400+ yards. Happy Birthday To Us

Founded in 1985 as the Gateway Football Conference, the Missouri Valley Football Conference is celebrating its 25th season of FCS football in 2009. During the season, fan voting will be conducted to help select a “Silver Anniversary Team,” recognizing the league’s alltime greats. Voting can be accessed at www. valley-football25.org. Fans can also vote to determine an Offensive and Defensive MVP of the league’s All-Select NFL Team.

New Name, Same Game

In June 2008, presidents of the ninemember Gateway Football Conference and the 10-member Missouri Valley Conference approved a rebranding initiative that changed the football conference name from the Gateway Football Conference to the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

Six Among Nation’s Top 50

Six Missouri Valley Football Conference players are among the Top 50 players in the FCS in rankings compiled by Josh Buchanan, who provides an NFL scouting service, working in conjunction with coaches and scouts to compile the lists. FCS TOP 50 OVERALL 11. DE James Ruffin, Northern Iowa, Sr. 12. TE Clay Harbor, Missouri State, Sr. 20. DT Mychal Savage, Youngstown State, Sr. 26. DE Danny Batten, South Dakota State, Sr. 41. C Austin Steichen, Northern Iowa, Sr. 50. CB Korey Lindsey, Southern Illinois, Jr.

Southern Gentlemen?

South Dakota State’s victory over Georgia Southern marked the first for the Jackrabbits in four tries against GSU. Notably, Missouri Valley Football Conference members have had small success against members of the Southern Conference, going 3-13 all-time against members of that league. Western Kentucky has the league’s only two other wins against the Southern Conference, beating Chattanooga (2006) and Georgia Southern (2002). Notably, 12 of the 13 MVFC losses have come in the playoffs and only one of those 12 was at home.

Five on FCS Lists

Five Valley football players are among 32 nationwide players listed by The Sports Network as official “Payton Watch” and “Buchanan Battle” members. The honors will be presented at the 23rd annual FCS College Football Awards in Chattanooga. R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Good Sports

The NCAA and AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) decided to promote sportsmanship during the opening week of 2009, calling college football’s opening slate of games Respect Weekend. The NCAA encouraged teams to meet at midfield prior to the start of the game and have the teams participate in a pregame hand shake. Valley Football has taken a leadership role in the area of sportsmanship by becoming the first league in the NCAA to institute a full-team, pre-game handshake before all conference games. The handshake, done for one game in 2003 and as a conference-wide program in 2004, involves head coaches and all players meeting at midfield.

The award honors players that embody the true spirit of “teamwork” and “giving back” through selfless contributions and commendable acts of kindness.

Despite being the first Redbird signal

caller since 1999 to start as a freshman, Matt Brown completed 27-of-47 pass attempts and threw for 312 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Illinois State’s 45-17 loss to Illinois. It’s the first 300-yard passing game at ISU since Luke Drone threw for 305 yards against Missouri State, Nov. 4, 2006, and the most passing yards since Drone torched Indiana State for 440 yards Nov. 12, 2005.

Senior Class

Indiana State has just nine players on its roster who are seniors. Of those, Mike Woods and Elliott Thomas are fifth-year seniors, while Donye McCleskey, Jeramie Gray, Jerry Calvert, Dan Millington, Pat Burke, Bill McGrath and Nate Brown are in their fourth year. Indiana State is tied with South Carolina and Duke for the second fewest amount of seniors in the nation. Boise State has the fewest in Division I with four.

League Slate Begins

With seven catches for 103 yards and two scores, Illinois State senior WR Eyad Salem did some climbing up the Redbird leader boards. Salem moved into eighth place all-time with 106 career receptions and the two touchdown grabs moved him into fifth all-time with 14 career touchdown catches. It was the sixth time that Salem has gone over 100 yards receiving in his career.

Indiana State’s 24th season as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference begins on Saturday when the Sycamores travel to South Dakota State for a 7 pm kickoff on the road versus the Jackrabbits. ISU is 6-17 in league lid-lifting contests, including 1-10 all-time when opening league play on the road. The only time the Sycamores earned a league opening victory on the road was a 10-7 victory at Western Illinois on October 5, 1996.

Playing the CAA

YSU’s last road game against a CAA team, which was formerly the Atlantic 10, was at Richmond in 2000 playoffs. Since that time, the Guins have played three CAA opponents at home - Northeastern in 2005, Maine in 2006 and James Madison in the 2006 playoffs. YSU won all three. The Guins’ last road win over a CAA squad was in 1999 - a 28-21 win at Villanova. In the playoffs last year, the MVFC was 2-2 vs. the CAA.

Bledsoe’s Big Game

Safety Sir Demarco Bledsoe finished with 15 tackles, including 10 solo stops in the Penguins’ win over Austin Peay. It was the most tackles by a Guin since Jeremiah Wright had 18 at Missouri State in 2004. It was the most solo stops in a contest since Marty Hutchinson was credited with 10 at McNeese State in 2004. Bledsoe’s 15 stops were the most by a member of the secondary since Mike Bracken’s 15 vs. UNI in 2002.

Defense Shows Improvement   Through two games this year the YSU defense has allowed 612 total offensive yards. That’s a far cry from last year when the Guins had allowed 1,001 yards after two contests. In 2007, the Penguins surrendered 673 yards through two games. In 2006, YSU allowed just 520.
