The Bulls: Our genetics continue make massive strides in profit building characteristics. Traits like fertility, desirable calving ease, soundness, structural integrity, foot quality, fleshing ability, longevity, advantageous carcass traits and pounds of production are areas of consistent focus. You will notice sire groups of bulls selling as well as full brothers being offered. This is for your benefit. You may select half brothers or full brothers in order to help increase the consistency of your calf crop. The Angus, SimAngus and Simmental genetics offered here are second to none! We have grown these bulls on a high roughage forge based ration. All of the bulls have DNA data, ultrasound data, and are weighed, measured, and semen tested. All of the bulls offered for sale will be guaranteed breeders. Every bull will qualify for the Phase One Tobacco money for both Kentucky and Tennessee and we will furnish the paperwork necessary to obtain those funds.

This group of Angus and Simmental females are the highest quality that we have ever offered. Every cow has either put a bull in our bull sale, a heifer in our replacement herd or both. The calves on these cows are sired by breed leading sires. Pay close attention to these females. The Angus cows are genetically progressive and their calves even more so. On the Simmental side of the females being offered, the Patriot and Anthem calves on the side of these cows are breed leading genetics that have so much to offer. Make sure and pay close attention to the udder quality and progressive genetic value in these Simmental cows and calves!

We would like to extend a great deal of gratitude to several Pleasant Hill Farms customers that continue to work closely with us for breeding decisions and marketing opportunities. A huge shout out to L&S Angus, Dogwood Hills Angus, RAW Cattle Company, BB Simmental, Packard Point Ranch, Dixie Land and Cattle and Green Family Farm. These are all excellent customers of Pleasant Hill Farms and it is a privilege to work with them. We guarantee that all breeding cattle sold by Pleasant Hill Farms are fertile to the best of our knowledge. Each bull has passed a Breeding Soundness Evaluation. In the event of a problem, the buyer is responsible to return the bull to Pleasant Hill Farms. If the bull does not respond as a satisfactory breeder, the buyer will have the option of a satisfactory replacement (if available), or the issue of a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus the salvage value received for that bull. All credit is good for one year from the sale date. We simply ask that you contact us concerning any issues.

This is not a life insurance policy. We will not guarantee bulls that are run in multiple sire groups. We will not replace a dead animal if it is killed or dies for any reason. Welcome to our 2025 Spring Production Sale offering.

When I think of this set of cattle, I think of the genetic progress that has been made here at Pleasant Hill Farms. This is a huge opportunity for someone to tie into these bulls and females to take home and build a program. This set of bulls had our heaviest averaging weaning weights to date, and are out of some of our best cows for long term maternal traits like unassisted calving, udder qualty, breed back and fleshing ability. While we strongly focus on soundness, foot quality, udder structure, teat size, fleshing ability, breed back, phenotype, hair shedding and docility, we also understand the importance of performance, that pounds is money. Our goal is to breed cattle that thrive in any environment, and bring more profit to your program.

The quality in this set of females runs very deep, with a proven production record, with either a bull in the offering or have put a heifer in the replacement pen. I highly encourage everyone to stop by and check out the offering before the sale.

I would like to thank my wife, Heather and our daughter, MaKinley for being patient and supporting of this dream I chase. As most of you know time management isn’t one of my strong points, it seems as we are never on time for anything. So thank you Heather for still putting up with me. There’s nothing that makes me much happier than seeing the smile on MaKinley’s face while checking cows or the excitement she has for baby calves, and hearing laughs while being horseback. Second to that hearing a customers success story with PHF genetics is what fuels me on those days when the sun isn’t shining and there’s freezing rain,

Thank you to Gil, Mary and family for allowing me to work in a business that I’m most passionate about. As a child my dream was always to be on a purebred cattle operation, and work with like minded people. And I’m thankful to be able to live out that dream everyday even on the tougher days. So again thank you to the Cowles Family for allowing me to work alongside them in building one of the very best cow herds.

explanation of EPDs

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

PRODUCTION

CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

WEANING WEIGHT (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

CARCASS

MARBLING (MARB), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

RIBEYE AREA (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

FAT THICKNESS (FAT), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

MATERNAL

MATERNAL MILK (MILK), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

COW ENERGY VALUE ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow er year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. Components for computing $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

$VALUE INDEXES

$Value Indexes, reported in dollars per head, are multi-trait selection indexes where a higher value suggests more profit. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

MATERNAL WEANED CALF VALUE ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.

WEANED CALF VALUE ($W), an index expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. $W assumes that producers retain 20% of their female progeny for replacements and sell the rest of their cull female and male progeny as feeder calves. Over time, increased selection pressure on $W will increase weaning and maternal milk traits while also continuing to increase mature cow size.

FEEDLOT VALUE ($F), an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes commercial producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis with no considerations of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade.

GRID VALUE ($G), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires.

BEEF VALUE ($B), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, facilitates simultaneous multi-trait genetic selection for feedlot and carcass merit. $B represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid.

COMBINED VALUE ($C), an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a qualitybased carcass merit grid.
