TOURISM CORNER Blue Flag encourages cooperation among government agencies
Congratulations! The Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Shamfa Cudjoe (centre) and Permanent Secretary Mrs Vidiah Ramkhelawan (right) are all smiles as they are handed the Blue Flag plaque by Blue Flag National Coordinator, Joanna Moses-Wothke in recognition of the third consecutive Blue Flag award given to the Las Cuevas Beach. The Blue Flag is an indicator of a clean and safe beach that adheres to international best practice on conserving the environment. It is awarded annually to beaches and marinas that have complied with the criteria for the award, including monthly water quality testing. From November 2016 to November 2017, the Tourism Development Company and the Ministry of Tourism will continue to spearhead environmental education activities in accordance with Blue Flag’s international requirements. The activities planned include the publication of a children's book about the marine eco-system; an interactive session on marine animals for students; and a stray dog management exercise. Minister Cudjoe expressed her delight that the Blue Flag programme has been initiated in Tobago and three beaches have been selected for further assessment. Mrs Moses-Wothke used the opportunity to also encourage continued cooperation among the stakeholders: Ministry of Tourism, the Tourism Development Company and the Ministry of National Security, Lifeguards Unit, with the support of the 10-Member Blue Flag National Jury.
