2:30 – 3:20 p.m. Polliteracy: Understanding the Art and Science of Public Opinion Dr. Mileah Kromer, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Hughes Center Julia Rogers G50
“Polliteracy” is an overview of the commonly asked questions concerning public opinion polling. What should consumers of polls look for in determining whether a poll is a signal of a political reality or simply the noise of junk science? How can we tell what millions of voters are thinking by only interviewing hundreds? Who is a likely voter? And, despite their best efforts, why do pollsters sometimes get it wrong?
3:30 – 4:20 p.m. A World Full of Color…Thanks to Science Dr. Pam Douglass, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Julia Rogers G50
How do we experience color? How do we communicate about the colors we see? How can we design technology that uses only a few different types of colored pixels yet communicates to us the many colors in nature? In the sciences at Goucher, we aim to guide students to a deep understanding of our world and how we interact with it by asking meaningful questions and investigating well designed studies. Since one of the ways many of our students interact with the world is through the use of smartphone technology, we explore the use of this technology as it relates to vision and color. Using smartphones and a scientific instrument called a spectrometer, we explore together a system of compounds and light that opens our eyes to the methods and techniques we use as scientists to expand our knowledge of the natural world.
2:30 – 3:20 p.m. Market Madness
Dr. Gina Shamshak, Associate Professor of Economics Julia Rogers G52 We will learn about key economic concepts while taking part in an in-class market activity. Dr. Elisa Koehler, Associate Professor of Music Julia Rogers G52 Everyone loves music with a good beat, but the real action takes place underneath the surface.
