SPECIAL MESSAGES
From the President and Vice-Chancellor
On behalf of all of us at the University of the Fraser Valley, I extend heartfelt congratulations to this year’s graduating class. We are thrilled to celebrate the completion of this stage of your educational journey with you. This week, we have the honour of recognizing your hard work and dedication in achieving your goals.
2024 is an especially momentous year, as UFV celebrates its 50th anniversary. As we mark this milestone, we are deeply grateful to the forward-thinking, visionary community leaders and educators who, in 1974, turned the dream of a post-secondary institution in the Valley into reality.
UFV was built by the community, for the community, and the unwavering support from our students, faculty, staff and broader community has been vital to our growth and transformation. Community is the thread — the unbroken line that connects the people of our past to UFV’s current students and our future alumni, partners, and leaders who will nurture and grow this very special place over the next 50 years.
We strive to maintain our founding principle by engaging with the community, both on and off campus, in all our endeavours; and we deeply appreciate our many partners who support UFV students through mentorship, co-op and work placements, and financial contributions in various forms.
Our mission statement, Engaging Learners, Transforming Lives, and Building Community, resonates profoundly today as we celebrate the Class of 2024 — a class that, for many, began their post-secondary journey with online learning due to the pandemic. We are overjoyed to gather in person to honour your accomplishments.
As you venture into the world, be proud of who you are and what you have achieved. We encourage you to embrace st’elt’elawtexw, a strong sense of community; to continue transforming lives through ayeqet kw’e shxwaylexws ; and to commit yourselves to ey shxweli , the pursuit of all that is good.
As you transition from students to alumni, you become part of UFV’s legacy, joining 50,000plus alumni making a difference in economic, environmental, social, and cultural sectors.
Please know that you have made all of us at UFV incredibly proud to be part of your journey. Congratulations, Class of 2024!

From the Chancellor
Ey swayel te shxwexwílhl te lálém (good day to all of you, my friends).
As we gather to celebrate your incredible achievements this week during convocation, it is my profound honour and joy to be here with you at this very special time in your lives.
Congratulations to each and every one of you! I share in the immense pride that your families, friends, and community feel for your hard work and dedication.
I became the University of the Fraser Valley’s fourth chancellor just a few weeks ago, and I am absolutely delighted that one of my first official duties is to celebrate this milestone with you. Although I am new to this role, my connection to UFV dates back to its early beginnings. This year, as we celebrate UFV’s 50th anniversary, we reflect on the incredible journey since 1974, and recognize how the roots of the institution we cherish today took hold back then.
UFV has always been a beacon of transformation, cooperation, partnership, and community support. Even in those formative years, UFV championed understanding and a deep relationship with community. For the past 50 years, we have continued our mission with a profound respect for culture, language, and land.
As a member of the The’wá:lí/Soowahlie First Nation, I am incredibly proud to be part of a university that is authentically committed to the journey towards reconciliation, a value embedded in our institution since its inception.
UFV’s greatest strength lies in our relationships. We will continue to foster genuine connections both within the university and with our broader communities, locally and beyond. Every day, we strive to live up to our motto “Íyáqáwtxw” — a house of transformation. Those of us who are part of UFV know that by working together, we can achieve anything we set out to do.
To all of you — students, family, friends, and community leaders and partners — in Stó:lō tradition, I raise my hands in thanks and respect to you for being part of this remarkable journey. We celebrate together with heartfelt joy and excitement. Wishing you all the best on this very special occasion.
Q’um Q’um Xiiem Dr. Jo-ann Archibald Chancellor

SPECIAL MESSAGES
From the Alumni Association
On behalf of the UFV Alumni Association Board of Directors, we extend our sincere congratulations to the Class of 2024! We are thrilled to welcome you into the UFV Alumni Association, where you automatically become a member upon graduation and join an exceptional community of remarkable individuals. Not only are UFV alumni found throughout the Fraser Valley and Canada, they’re also in 43 other countries around the world.
Graduates, you have achieved a significant milestone! As you cross the stage today, you are not only receiving your well-deserved credential but also becoming part of a global network of more than 50,000 alumni. This milestone comes at an auspicious time, coinciding with UFV’s 50th anniversary, marking half a century of excellence in education and community building.
Fifty years ago, the community came together to create Fraser Valley College — a place and space for everyone to learn and grow. In the years since, as FVC then University College of the Fraser Valley became the university we know today, a lot has changed. But much has remained constant: UFV’s values of inclusivity, integrity, excellence, and, of course, community. Join us during this special anniversary year as we honour the past, celebrate our present, and co-create the future.
We trust the valuable skills, insights, and knowledge you’ve acquired will serve you well as you embark on your exciting new journey.
The UFV alumni community consists of individuals who genuinely make a difference. Our presence spans far and wide, and we are committed to harnessing our expertise and passion to positively impact our communities.
As you move forward, know that you are in the company of change-makers who are shaping the future. We eagerly anticipate witnessing your accomplishments and celebrating your successes along the way.
We couldn’t be more proud of you, and we look forward to seeing the incredible things you will achieve next.

Traditions
OUR TRADITIONS
Stó:lō Territory
UFV strives to be a place of learning that recognizes, respects, and includes Indigenous ways of knowing. Our campuses are situated on the territory of the Stó:lō peoples. The Stó:lō have an intrinsic relationship with what they refer to as S’ólh Téméxw (Our Sacred Land); therefore, we express our gratitude and respect for the honour of living and working on this territory.
THE TALKING STICK
The Talking Stick is a gift from the Stó:lō people to UFV, honouring all Indigenous people. The Talking Stick leads the academic procession into Convocation and the recession after the ceremony.
The figures on the Talking Stick are a wolf and a thunderbird. The wolf is symbolic of “the teacher” in Stó:lō territory, while the thunderbird represents the highest level of knowledge.
Most universities in the Commonwealth have a ceremonial mace, which accompanies the Convocation ceremonies. It is the staff of office, representing official authority (like the Speaker of the House of Commons).
UFV uses the Talking Stick rather than a mace for this purpose, thus bringing together a partnership between Indigenous and university traditions.
THE DRUM
A gift of the Stó:lō people, the UFV Ceremonial Drum was presented to UFV in 1997 by Steven Point, who was then the Chiefs’ representative of the Stó:lō Nation. The drum features a thunderbird and is used during university ceremonies.
“It’s with great pride that I present a symbol of our fraternity, camaraderie, and loyalty,” said Point at the presentation ceremony.
“We all spent nine months with our mothers, waiting to come in to the world, and we heard her heartbeat, and when we were born, we recognized our mothers by their heartbeat. When we make the sound of a drum it’s a symbol of the heartbeat of our mother. It’s a precious sound, it gathers people together, and we sing our songs.
“That’s why we chose this symbol to present to you. We truly want to come together, and to have a good relationship with all of you. I hope and pray that it will always stand as a symbol of the affinity between our groups of people.”

Traditions
TRADITIONS
OUR
ACADEMIC DRESS
Traditional academic regalia consists of a gown, hood, and a mortarboard or cap and tassel. The wearing of robes became common in the Middle Ages. In monasteries and universities of the time, scholars wore the same long closed gowns as other medieval men. By the time the University of Cambridge was founded in the early thirteenth century, doctors in law and music were permitted to wear gowns in scarlet, purple, and red. Over time, garments and colours came to identify their university. Regalia colours often matched those of the university patron, or the colours of the city in which the university was located.
At UFV, regalia uses the university’s rich green colours. There are vee-stoles for diploma and certificate graduates, while bachelor’s degree program graduates wear degree hoods. The coloured binding or trim on the edge of the degree hoods represents the faculty from which a student is graduating.
UFV hood trim colours:
White Arts
Light blue Education
Forest green Business and Computing
Silver Health Sciences
Apricot Nursing
Pale green Science
Forest green Social Work
Emerald green Alumni Association (blue cord) Board of Governors (silver cord) Senate (gold cord)
Pale green on UFV Faculty and Administration a green hood
The addition of red cord denotes a master’s degree
Honorary degree hood colours:
White velvet Doctor of Letters
Purple velvet Doctor of Laws
Orange velvet Doctor of Technology
THE CHANCELLOR’S MEDALLION
UFV’s medallion is worn by the Chancellor for very special occasions. The radiant diamonds in the design symbolize future alumni spreading their knowledge. The BC jade in the centre reflects our region’s rich farming and ecological roots. This hand-crafted 18kt white and yellow gold medallion was a gift to the university from Brian Lee of Abbotsford.
THE UFV COAT OF ARMS
UFV’s coat of arms (on the cover) features symbols of Stó:lō culture, local wildlife, and elements of the landscape.
The UFV motto, “Íyáqáwtxw”, is a Halq’emeylem word meaning house of transformation, symbolizing the transformational power of education.
Blue herons are Indigenous symbols of inquisitiveness, determination, and excellent judgement. Sighting a heron before a hunt indicated the hunt would be victorious. This parallels the search for knowledge at UFV.
The sturgeon is a symbol of abundance and a source of life that lives in the Fraser River (symbolized by the green and white undulating stripes). These represent UFV as a source of knowledge and vitality.
The hummingbird represents joy, resilience, agility, and the ability to travel great distances. It mirrors UFV’s mandate to provide lasting knowledge, the ability to respond to the community, endurance over time, and the transfer of knowledge to students for their journey.

Faculty of Applied and Technical Studies | Faculty of Science
Kaden Tamis
Agriculture Technology Diploma, Livestock concentration
Kaden Tamis, a second-generation graduate of the University of the Fraser Valley, is completing his agricultural studies at UFV as part of a lifelong commitment to agriculture, specifically in the area of livestock management, where he is well positioned to grow into a leader.
In the classroom, he tends to be the quiet one, a person who might be overlooked; but Kaden has always been able to demonstrate leadership in his small group projects, working with a diversity of students with respect and a kind heart.
Kaden has balanced his studies with working and will likely begin his career in custom agricultural work, a highly technical aspect of agriculture, often underappreciated in terms of technical skill and value to the sector. Without this critical service many producers would be unable to continue farming. Kaden chose to pursue service through 4H and has demonstrated his leadership there.
For his leadership in an important sector for the Fraser Valley, Kaden Tamis is an excellent example of the student population as UFV begins 50th anniversary celebrations.

Kue K’nyawmupoe
Bachelor of Social Work
Kue K’nyawmupoe was born in a refugee camp on the border of Myanmar and Thailand, where she lived with her mother, aunt, and older siblings for fourteen years. Kue received her basic schooling within the camp, taught by teachers who themselves were solely taught within the boundaries of the camp.
Kue’s family came to Canada in winter 2007 as governmentsponsored refugees. Kue attended high school in Surrey and received a scholarship to attend the Community Social Service Work diploma program at Douglas College. Upon graduation, Kue worked as a community support worker and outreach support worker with vulnerable adults. During her time as a BSW student at UFV, Kue has balanced academic success with student involvement in the Student Social Work Association. In her third year, Kue was a member of the Student Committee of the BC Association of Social Workers as well as the school’s student delegate to the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Association for Social Work Education.
Kue graduates this spring after completing field placements with the Chilliwack Youth Health Centre and Abbotsford Regional Hospital and plans to work as a healthcare social worker with older adults. Kue raised her baby and worked part-time while earning her degree, with great support from her family. She is the first person in her family to graduate from university.

Bachelor of Kinesiology, Exercise Science
Nina is a student with a love of discovery in the field of kinesiology, one who has focused her interests in research with initiatives such as trail running/blueberry supplementation, and an eight-week hiking program with older adults and faculty members in Health Sciences. She also volunteered for the Trishaw project. Nina recently took part in the Two-Minute Thesis challenge at Student Research Day, clearly explaining her work validating wearable technology in a way that engaged the audience, left them with questions that were applicable to their everyday life, and made them laugh.
Nina is a first-generation Canadian whose language is Afrikaans. Growing up, she participated in everything from piano to soccer, French-immersion, skate-skiing, judo, hiking, visual arts, and waitressing. In her first year of university, she struggled to narrow down these vast interests, trying out mathematics, biology, dental hygiene, and agriculture. In her second year at UFV she took a kinesiology course — and was hooked. There she discovered her passion for the science of human movement.
Nina plans to continue to pursue a master’s degree in Exercise Science, with aspirations of becoming a kinesiology professor.

His multifaceted contributions as a researcher, scholar, creative artist, and performer have earned him respect and admiration.

He has been a key organizer of many conferences addressing the legacy of residential schools and played a key role in providing invaluable support to the schools’ survivors — focusing on their resiliency and ability to overcome their trauma and begin a new vision for their future.
As a Skwah First Nation Councillor, Eddie concentrates on land and fish habitat restoration, economic development and governance based on inherent rights to self-determination as outlined in the United Nations Declaration on Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP).
Eddie earned a certificate of intermediate fluency in Halq’eméylem, and is passionate about bringing the language alive in the community. He is a founding member of Éy St’elmexw St’elt’ílém — Good Medicine Songs, a group that creates lyrics in Halq’eméylem and English, a dynamic musical expression of Stó:lō culture and traditions. This fosters cross-cultural understanding, and inspires collaborative action to restore, preserve and conserve ecosystem services in Stó:lō Téméxw — Stó:lō Land.
Eddie is a respected Elder and Pelólxw Tribe leader. He is well known for conducting sweat lodge ceremonies, making them available to people from all backgrounds who respect the protocols. He has always embodied distinguished and visionary leadership. His dedication and generous contributions have not only enriched our society, but also significantly improved the quality of life for the Indigenous community and those around him. Marion Keys
DOCTOR OF LAWS
Engaging Learners. Transforming Lives. Building Community. It’s rare to find someone who embodies all pillars of the University of the Fraser Valley’s mission. But if anyone does, it’s Marion Keys. And if an issue arises connected to social justice, community collaboration, or political movement, chances are good Marion is involved.
Marion’s contributions to everyone and everything around her demonstrate a strong dedication to the development and well-being of the Abbotsford community, emphasizing inclusive growth and active civic engagement.
Recognized for her sustained involvement in the local community, Marion was part of a team that led the formation of Abbotsford First Electors Society (AFES) in 2016 with the mission to involve local residents in governmental processes and to support council candidates from diverse backgrounds. The organization has fostered a community that grows along positive and inclusive lines, a goal to which Marion has dedicated herself. The results? In 2022, she served as president, financial agent, and campaign manager, with an election cycle that resulted in gender parity of councillors for the first time on Abbotsford city council and more diverse candidates elected.
Marion has also been a board member of the Maplewood Care Society and has been an organizer for the Holmberg Memorial Golf Classic, which supports the Abbotsford Hospice Society. During that time, she has helped raise millions for the Abbotsford Hospice to build Holmberg House.
As an active member of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, Marion was a founder of the not-for-profit committee — a key participant in a joint Chamber/UFV report: The Business of Doing Good , which measured the economic impact of the not-for-profit sector in Abbotsford. In 2022, Marion was awarded the Platinum Queen’s Jubilee medal of community service. She was also awarded — not once, but twice — the Paul Harris award for her work with Rotary International. And Marion is the recently installed President of the Abbotsford-Sumas Rotary Club, an organization that plays an important role in assisting in community success on youth, literacy, and health matters.
She is an indefatigable volunteer, community booster, effective citizen, and agent for change. She is the life of the community, a true grassroots champion who emphasizes the importance of participation in the electoral process. She has empowered diverse groups to use their voices in making a difference.
Marion Keys is a strong believer in the role of teamwork in making a difference. She has consistently demonstrated the University of the Fraser Valley’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life of its communities. She is someone who believes the term “selfless” should not precede service, as service is inherently selfless. Marion has wholly contributed to making Abbotsford into what it is today.

Michelle Frances Good
DOCTOR OF LETTERS
Michelle Frances Good is a changemaker, a woman who uses her voice and her words to stand up to injustice, a tireless advocate for meaningful decolonization and reconciliation; she is a fierce truth teller with a disarming sense of humour, an eloquent communicator who relates to students with kindness, and a visionary leader whose sense of hope is deep and reflective of the historical resiliency of Indigenous communities.
A member of the Red Pheasant Cree Nation (Saskatchewan), which is situated on Treaty 6 land, Michelle (LLB ’99, MFA ’14, UBC) is a community activist, a lawyer, and an award-winning author who has established herself as a transformative and accessible leader, sharing with everyone her hope for the future, her values, and her way of being in the world.
After working for Indigenous organizations for 25 years, she obtained a law degree and advocated for residential school survivors for over 14 years. Good earned a master of fine arts degree in creative writing at the University of British Columbia (UBC) while still practising law and managing her own law firm. Her poems, short stories, and essays have been published in magazines and anthologies across Canada, and her poetry was included on two lists of the best Canadian poetry in 2016 and 2017.
Michelle tells the stories of residential school survivors — not specific ones, but of the collective experience of tens of thousands of young Indigenous children who were taken from their families over decades.
Five Little Indians, her first novel, won numerous awards, including the HarperCollins/UBC Best New Fiction Prize, the Amazon First Novel Award, and the Governor General’s Literary Award.
Her newest work, Truth Telling: Seven Conversations about Indigenous Life in Canada, was released in May 2023 and was shortlisted for the Writers Trust Balsillie Prize for Public Policy Writing.
Michelle Good has been described as a bright light in a dark world. Her works and her wisdom are a guide towards actual decolonization and meaningful reconciliation.
At a time when despair and cynicism are high, when it is difficult and challenging to reckon with the pain and suffering experienced by people around the world, voices like Michelle’s are needed more than ever. She is an individual who strives to build community and to encourage each of us to build better relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in this world.

Nick Taylor
DOCTOR OF LAWS
Anyone who hits the links in the Fraser Valley knows who Nick Taylor is. And while he’s a familiar name on the PGA Tour, he is just as well known for his mentorship of young players and his philanthropic support of UFV students and local community service organizations.
After graduating from Abbotsford’s Yale Secondary School — where he and his teammates won back-to-back provincial golf championships — Nick earned a degree in Economics at Washington University, where he was ranked as the world’s top amateur golfer, and received the 2010 Ben Hogan Award as the best college golfer in the United States.
Nick turned pro in 2010, shaping his game through the smaller PGA Tour Canada and Web.com Tour before earning a spot on the PGA Tour in 2014. Nick has won on the PGA Tour four times — capped by a 72-foot putt for his historic win at the 2023 Canadian Open — becoming the first Canadian to win our national championship in 69 years.
While Nick is clearly a champion on the golf course, he has also stepped into the role of mentor to young golfers, and as ambassador to causes that are important to him.
Along with his wife, Andie (a UFV alumna, BSW ’12), Nick established the Nick Taylor Charity Classic golf tournament in 2017 to support UFV and local social service agencies. To date, more than $1-million has been raised for UFV scholarships, plus the UFV Student Union Food Bank, Archway Community Services, 27blue, the Starfish Backpack program, Holmberg House, and Chilliwack Community Services.
Through the tournament, the Nick and Andie Taylor Endowment Leadership Award was established at UFV — one of the first endowed scholarships for UFV student-athletes. And while each charity supported by the tournament benefits financially, the activity also inspires others to become donors and work together to promote and support important causes. This includes the establishment of 10 additional endowed scholarships at UFV for members of the golf team.
When the COVID-19 pandemic spread in 2020, Nick’s tournament took a social-distance approach while raising $40,000 for the UFV Student Union Food Bank, helping many students with food insecurity, which escalated dramatically during the pandemic
He returns to his hometown of Abbotsford as often as he can, recognizing the pivotal role it has played in where he is today.
