HISTORY IN THE HEART

TALLAROOK MECHANICS INSTITUTE

OF VICTORIA

A rich and meaningful history is waiting to be discovered in the Heart of Victoria. Dating back to our indigenous ancestors, the region’s history has been shaped by early pioneering farmers, gold miners, irrigators, loggers and bushrangers. Today, it is yours to discover! Travelling through the country side of the Heart of Victoria, it’s hard to ignore the historic buildings, rustic homesteads, shearing sheds, cottages and rural outbuildings of yesteryear. Each building is beautiful and unique, and together they stand as a testament to the thriving communities of a different era that helped shape the region as it is today. The many local Historical Societies and Museums across the Heart of Victoria provide an insight into the rich tapestry of the region, and each town has its own story to tell. Explore the tales of hardships and triumphs, ingenuity and prosperity and heroes and villains who shaped this region. Let’s not forget the many other important facets of life. Everything from logging, railways and irrigation to agriculture and manufacturing allowed each town to build a distinctive identity.

The links of a rich military history are evident throughout the Heart of Victoria and provide a fascinating insight into our armed history. Be moved by the evocative Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk at Seymour, which honours the service of the men and women who played their part in a tumultuous period of Australia’s history. Follow the stories of the troops at the Australian Light Horse Memorial Park as they prepared for battle in the Great War and later in WWII. Nearby, the RAAC Memorial and Army Tank Museum at Puckapunyal collects, preserves and exhibits the history of the Australian Light Horse and Armoured Corps. Whilst you’re here, why not take a visit to honour our Victoria Cross recipients. The ‘Honouring our Heroes’ statues of Maygar, Burton and Tubb stand tall at the VC Memorial Park in Euroa while in Tatura the sacrifice of Private Mactier VC is remembered.

NED KELLY Echoes of Australia’s most notorious bushranger Ned Kelly can be heard across the rugged ranges of the region that he roamed with his gang. Discover the Ned Kelly Touring Route at www.heartofvictoria.com.au/ned-kelly.

VIETNAM VETERANS COMMEMORATIVE WALK THE VIETNAM VETERANS COMMEMORATIVE WALK (VVCW) IN SEYMOUR IS A UNIQUE MONUMENT DEDICATED TO THE AUSTRALIAN SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVED IN THE VIETNAM WAR. The VVCW is a meandering red earth path set in native trees and grasses that symbolise the rubber trees and rice paddies of the Vietnamese landscape. The entrance to the Walk is a replica of the ‘Luscombe Bowl’ troop entertainment site. The centrepiece of the Walk is an extensive DigiGlass wall engraved with the names of over 60,000 Australian personnel and eleven tracker dogs who served in the Vietnam War. The 106 panels tell the pictorial story of Australia’s involvement in Vietnam. Situated a small distance from the wall, the Remembrance panel lists the names of those Australian personnel who died during the Vietnam War. Areas of contemplation allow people to rest and reflect. The landscape is enhanced with artifacts used during the Vietnam War, including a replica of the Long Tan Cross, a Centurion tank and a Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) helicopter. MERINDOC VINTNERS, CELLAR DOOR & BISTRO

For three generations the Shelmerdine family has been among Victoria’s most prominent grape growers. With two vineyards in Heathcote we offer a variety of wine styles. Wines on tasting include Riesling, Viogner, Chardonnay, Grenache Rosé (dry), Nebbiolo, Syrah Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and of course Shiraz. The Merindoc philosophy is simple; we employ our understanding of the site, soil, and the seasons to craft wines that express the unique characteristics of our vineyards, this in turn ensures wines with a true regional identity. Surrounded by dramatic hills, sweeping vistas and spectacular granite outcrops, Merindoc Vineyard sits on McIvor Creek, site of mid-19th century gold diggings and amongst the earliest vineyards in Victoria.

Our Merindoc Cellar Door & Bistro is the ideal place to discover the balance and elegance of our wines. Let our experienced and friendly staff guide you through an educational tasting experience. The Merindoc property is also a working farm running sheep and cattle and there is a large kitchen garden adjacent to Cellar Door. Our Bistro menu is seasonally inspired and uses our own beef, lamb and garden produce. Heathcote is fast becoming one of Australia’s most loved wine regions. Good food, friendly cellar doors, spectacular landscapes, gold rush relics, local art and craft, serene bushlands and dark night skies dotted with stars make Heathcote an ideal place to explore. Cellar Door is open Friday to Monday from 10 am to 4pm for wine tastings & sales. The Bistro is open Saturdays and Sundays from 11.30 am to 3pm. Please check our webpage for latest menu offering and bistro hours
