It’s all about the AND. Gould is more than a traditional college prep school. Our students are actively involved in shaping their own education by taking advantage of opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom and out onto the stage, the field and mountains, and into our communities and the world. We think of choice as something additive; our students don’t choose this or that, they choose this AND that.

Gould is a study in contrasts. We’re a small, close knit community, but we’re far from insular.

We believe in traditions, but we also believe in disruptive innovation.

We’ll provide you with experiences on campus and off that will broaden your understanding of community and of the world.

Yes, there will be many classroom discussions around our Harkness tables and in our labs, but there will also be opportunities to get outside, to create, and to learn by trying something new.

We believe in granting independence AND providing support. At the heart of any Gould endeavor are the energy to try, the willingness to risk, and the capacity to persevere. That may manifest itself in the classroom, in becoming a certified ski patroller, in overcoming obstacles during a winter camping trip, or travelling internationally on a service trip. When you graduate from Gould Academy, you will have a clear advantage over your peers in how you relate to the world and the challenges in it.

ACADEMICS Discover unexpected passions.

At the core of our academic program – and your academic success – are the relationships you will build with our teaching faculty. These experts and explorers within their fields will not only guide you through a rigorous curriculum focused on traditional academic disciplines, but will also open your eyes to other interests and passions. There are no limits to the challenges our faculty can and will provide to an academically exceptional student like yourself.

ATHLETICS Leading by example. Some of our athletes go on to compete at their college or university. Others come to Gould with little to no experience and graduate an accomplished member of a team. And, while many of our teams boast championship titles or podium finishes, the common thread that ties all of our student-athletes together is a shared commitment to excellence.

ON SNOW Competition Program

Whether your goal is to develop a lifelong love of alpine, freestyle, snowboarding, or Nordic, or to compete for an NCAA Division I school and beyond, Gould Academy has the coaches, the teachers, the opportunities inside and outside of the classroom, not to mention the passion to help you achieve your goals. From regional and national competitions to international events at the highest level, the Gould Academy Competition Program provides an unbelievable educational and athletic experience thanks to our training location at Sunday River Resort located only six miles away.

ON SNOW On Snow Programs Gould Academy has a longstanding tradition of celebrating the winter season beyond just that of its on snow competitive programs. Thanks to our proximity (six miles) and even closer working relationship with Sunday River Resort, education outside of the classroom and on the slopes allows our students to excel and learn in ways that they never imagined possible. Here students become certified ski patrollers, teach skiing or snowboarding to young children, and provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to overcome perceived limitations and boundaries.

COLLEGE CO Find the right fit.

You’re here with a goal, and Gould’s College Counselors are here to help you reach it. That’s why they begin the step-by-step process in your very first year, to determine your best path to college. It’s an individualized approach that determines the best college fit based not just on academics, but on other important considerations including location, athletics, co-curricular activities, and scholarship opportunities. Recent Gould graduates are attending Berkeley College of Music, Boston College, Colby, Dartmouth, Lewis & Clark College, Middlebury, MIT, Savannah College of Art & Design, Stanford, University of Vermont, and Williams College.

OUNSELING

EXPERIENTIAL “You won’t just get ready for life at Gould, you’ll live it—in the classroom, in the dorms, traveling abroad with faculty and classmates, even camping in the Maine woods.”

Experiential Learning Gould Academy will prepare you for college and for life. Some of these lessons will be learned in the classroom while others will be learned over a campfire, through community service and internships, or while studying or serving abroad. We believe in the transformative benefits of immersion, expression, awareness, and independence.

CHRIS HAYWARD | Director of Experiential Learning

FOUR POINT PROGRAM Each year, Gould classes embark on journeys, which – like the four points of a compass – expose students to essential questions: Who are you in the greater world? Who are you within your community? Who are you as a member of a team? – And, who will you become when given the reigns to explore your passions? NINTH GRADE: Immersion through international travel to China and Tanzania TENTH GRADE: Artistic Expression through community service ELEVENTH GRADE: Self-awareness and team building through winter camping TWELFTH GRADE: Independent research and reflection

ADVISORY PROGRAM

TENTH GRADE PROGRAM

Gould’s Advisory Program is the center of the Gould Life experience for both students and their families. For the family, the advisor is a personal guide, another parent – someone who acts as a mentor, helping both with academic decisions and life events.

In addition to community service opportunities with other local organizations and nonprofits like the Mahoosuc Land Trust, Maine Adaptive, Mt. Abram, New Beginnings, and the Maine Veterans’ Home, Gould’s Tenth Grade Program includes regular class meetings to share information and offer students support. Bowling, roller skating, and a weekend trip to Hurricane Island allow students to challenge themselves and form connections with their classmates in fun, informal settings.

COMMUNITY LIFE For those students who live on-campus, residence life provides day to day experience within a tight knit community, teaching you the values of trust, responsibility, kindness, honesty, respect, and tolerance. Students share the dorms with faculty residents and peer proctors. Dorm rooms are where students study and relax, while common areas provide social gathering spaces to share pizza and watch a game, or movie. Day Students are an important group within our community, sharing in these same experiences and spaces.

NINTH GRADE PROGRAM Gould’s Ninth Grade Program is designed to help new students lay sound foundations for success, in both their academic careers and lives beyond Gould. Through our student mentorship program, ninth graders learn and practice productive academic habits, and ultimately become more confident, capable students and peers.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM Did you know that one third of Gould Academy’s student population is composed of international students from more than 20 countries around the globe? Our International Program provides an all-encompassing support system that aims to facilitate travel, everyday life, and adjustment to American and Maine culture for students from abroad.

CONNECT Make the Gould connection. Visit.

The best way to start your Gould journey is to come and visit us. Walk into our classrooms or laboratories. Watch one of our teachers lead a challenging discussion or work one-on-one with a current student. Observe one of our student musicians perfecting their technique with adjunct faculty at the Manhattan School of Music or an aspiring artist blacksmithing in the art cottage. Witness how design thinking really works – on paper, through a sewing machine, in an mp3 or a robot, or even through a piece of wood – in our IDEAS Center. Train with one of our coaches on the field or trails or on-snow. We will cater a visit to your interests.
