NOTE: AFTER THE FINAL DECISION OF THE PUBLIC PANEL WHERE OUR DESIGN WAS SELECTED, WE WERE ASKED BY THE ORGANISING COMMITTE OF THE GARDEN OF THE UNEXPECTED TO TRY AND INTEGRATE SOME OF THE ELEMENTS FROM THE OTHER DESIGNS, IN PARTICULAR THE TWO SHORTLISTED DESIGNS OF JYOTI AND LARA. WE WELCOMED THE IDEA AND CONDUCTED SEVERAL “DREAMWEAVING” SESSIONS, WHERE WE PRESENTED OUR IDEAS TO EACH OTHER AND GAVE A CRITIQUE. WHAT IS PRESENTED HERE IS THE AMALGAMATION OF THIS PROCESS OF ONE MONTH, WHICH THE TEAM AT STUDIO NAQSHBANDI ALONG WITH JOSS AND ANDREAS HAVE PUT TOGETHER. THE REFRENCE IMAGES ARE TO HINT AT WHAT WE VISUALISE AND NOT FNAL. WE ENVISAGE THE MANIFESTATION OF THESE GARDENS IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS, ENGAGING WITH MANY PERSONS FROM THE COMMUNITY.

INSPIRATIONS FROM WITHIN AUROVILLE & SOME OF OUR SELECTED WORKS

“A garden is never finished, it is always in progress”

4

INSPIRATIONS FROM WITHIN AUROVILLE & SOME OF OUR SELECTED WORKS

“I see all as a flow, all evolves together, jumping over seeming boundaries to include all, permanently changing surfaces into others....leaning onto each other, mingling with each other, creating vistas, surprises. Nature is not ornamental.”

5

INSPIRATIONS FROM WITHIN AUROVILLE & SOME OF OUR SELECTED WORKS

“To work with rocks is contagious...”

6

CONCEPT To nurture the child within each one of us... Our garden will welcome adults and children of all ages: 1. Young toddlers of Auroville who will visit the Garden in the evening with parents. 2. Auroville teenagers who will visit the garden of unexpected with their friends to find a quiet corner to do their homework. 3. Adults and those who come to visit Inner Chamber will walk through Garden A and B to reach the granite benches in Garden C

Place of wonder and discovery in the unexpected...An initiatory place. - Roger Anger

Matrimandir : Garden Of Unexpected CONCEPT

Path – Order – Progression – Reflection (youth as the Mobius strip of life)

Path as the meandering poetry of contemplation, transforming the unique human being. We should incorporate ‘unexpected’ reflections of above and below. Colours, materials, stones as transforming, life evolving which we move through, occasionally contemplating. ‘Unexpected’ provides a direction we didn’t acknowledge to exist.

A B

What more inviting presence can there be than the curiosity of children, more connected to spirit, than humanity. There is an essence to being ‘children’. The gardens suggest ‘unexpected’ beauty and discovery, there is surprise, shared in all ages, ‘being’ without age. Matrimandir, Auroville, gardens: we leave meaning, to weave meaning, with an order of harmony, of music, of chaotic ordered pattern where spirits are invited to dwell in harmony with human beings and we invite a living wholeness, an order of life.

C

D

We must not allow playfulness unbridled, as this reality has order and responsibilities. But there could be just a few little places where we might? Where we can discover some things we have forgotten; where place order, flora order and mineral order can mingle with laughter to help us in staring from the past and into the future from a present moment of aloneness and sharing. There are 4 hidden gardens reflecting a spirit of place.

Garden A (729 sq.m) BIRTH Garden B (1357 sq.m) ADOLESCENCE Garden C (2727 sq.m) YOUTH Garden D (3531 sq.m), ETERNAL CHILD/Circle for Humanity Through all of these spaces, there is an unexpected path with entry portals at each path entry which has a unique flavour hinting at the place within. Maybe make people cross the grass or the planting to be ‘inside’ the spaces. The idea is to provide glimpses from the main paths which entice.

8

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER GARDENS Maybe the Garden of the Unexpected reflects and brings to a sweet young life through the eyes ,ears ,fingers and toes of children, the energies of all the other gardens... The GOU can also be seen as sections of the spine of a being lying curled, protecting , enjoying, reflecting on the MM , the Banyan and the Unity gardens. Behind it to the north west the whole of India, and nearby the megalithic Dravidians memories... The GOU has a dignified independence from the other gardens...it is a different being, a place with a twinkle in its eye... A place of lightness that absorbs, ponders over the other gardens from the stance of a child at play with all the possibilities of the emerging being. A Garden to find a quiet place to sit and walk amongst all ages, reflecting after sitting in the chamber, or being amongst the other gardens, ready to be transported to the unexpected..., It is an antennae to/from the past to the future with instruments/tools with which to construct the song. It can be buzzing with life of children and their sounds - not too loud but definitely not only contemplation- the twelve gardens are already there for that. These gardens are about the living presence of yoga, walking meditation, where moving, seeing, being, smelling, all the active part of our contemplative nature, invite the deep meanings of MM to partake and be loved. Youth and childhood are the beginnings of knowing the yoga and what we learn and how we imbue our living with this understanding evolves into a life of caring, tolerance, dedication‌ the pebble garden is for bare feet. The sand spaces for bare feet, the butterfly and birds are invited.

GARDEN OF BIRTH (garden A) A WALK THROUGH THE GARDEN A portal of entry set back, creating an entry courtyard. Rough stone pillars make a gate, a frog, butterfly, rat carving on some stones. A chime, low OM sound hangs loosely from the wisdom tree, occassionaly tinkled by the wind. Mirrors suspended from the tree reflects nature and invites birds to perch. A path weave through the existing plantings with randomly placed stones for seating. The path continues... We arrive at a clearing through misty fog. Buddha’s belly defines the edge providing a sense of enclosure. There is a natural lily pond (self maintaining) with stone edge reflecting the sky above. Two birds are cooling themselves in the bird bath. Trees with beautiful green bark ideal for climbing, adorn the landscape. Benches are provided for mummy to watch the play and rest quiet. And for story telling...the underlit benches add to the magic of a moment at dusk. There are alcoves of possibility, of rest, of shades, of colours, smells. A series of stone slab marks the exit of the garden...leading to the Garden of Adolescence.

CONCEPT AND AESTHETIC : GARDEN B A WALK THROUGH THE GARDEN We enter a foyer of stones, a couple of slab stones, perhaps carved in to trellis covered with sweet smelling creepers. The path meanders through a butterfly garden circle with splashes of scarlet, orange and yellow. A music stone is placed under the tree. We gently descend to a zen space with a japanese rock garden. Composed of sand and rocks, it reminds us of the sense of elemental existence. This is a place to leave something behind...Perhaps a place for stones to be left, stones which are brought by visitors from far away beaches, gardens, perhaps with memories etched, a stone of a, for a, loved one, memories, hopes, dreams as the child evolves remaining the child. Towards the right, in the sea of touch-me-nots, we have the Artist’s Corner where creative minds can display their artwork. The stone portal at the far end hints the end of the garden.

GARDEN OF YOUTH (Garden C) A WALK THROUGH THE GARDEN We enter the garden past granite slabs and pillars to step into a pathway that intertwines between the four mature existing neem trees. Shade of the tree invites the visitors to the inner chamber of matrimandir to pause and rest on the granite benches. Smell of the aromatic herbs planted in the Edible Curative Garden on the right side waft through the breeze inviting one to entice the tastebuds. We approach the Monsoon Pavillion changing over time as vines mingle and stretch together. A place to retreat and enjoy the rain... The Mansoon Pavillion overlooks a reflecting pond. A gurgling stream offshoots from it to join a lower pond at the base of garden. Perched on top of the existing Pipal tree, is a wooden platform that offers picturesque view of Matrimandir Gardens. How you enter a place, what you see and feel, begins the experience of place in the moment and carries this experience through what comes next.

GARDEN OF ETERNAL CHILD (Garden D) CIRCLE OF HUMANIY In this circle of humanity, three center stones are ringed by a circle of stones. The three stones in the center represents The Trinity. Around The Trinity is the inner circle with seven megalithic burial stones representing the foundations of life: World, Sun, Moon and Fire, Water, Earth, Air in a circle of red earth edged with tile. There are 4 stones outside the circle marking the 4 directions and signifying East, West, South and North. Granite benches are placed to provide an edging, along with the pathway it reinforces the circle. The circle is placed taking into consideration the existing trees. Each of the stones has a meaning, and a role within the circle: music, purity, renewal, power & gentleness, direction to name a few. Each stone is a marker of place and an invitation to feel its uniqueness. They invite concentrations and contemplations and help to nourish the fields of place. The native grasses around will provide a whisper, when there is wind. In anticipation of the future entrance from the west axis, we would like to propose an avenue of swaying palms trees framing the axis to the Matrimandir, welcoming the visitors.
