Project Name: International Trade Fair Complex Client: Export Promotion Bureau, Bangladesh (EPB) Project Cost: BDT 2.65 billion Site area: 24 Acres Site:, The site is located at SECTOR 4 OF PURBACHAL MODEL TOWN, Dhaka

he current scenario of the fair is more like an amusement or recreational fair rather than promotional of trade and commerce. Not been conducted to promote new orders of products. Hardly engaged international traders. The temporary pavilions are expensive and considered useless after the fair Considering these factors. The export Promotional Bureau (EPB) has decided to build a permanent structure for the fair and other exhibition with the financial assistance of China.

The concept is to break the chain between the different classes of people. The roof will be the grand community spacefor every kind of people (including handicapped). Different kinds of amusement facilities like food court and shops will be available there for everybody. This place will be available even when there no fair is holding under the roof. This place is something to be felt. The structure is meant to designed as such a way that somebody can say it as their own structure standing on it. The Project site is located inside the urban realm. Creating a exhibition space for the trading companies as a significant model for the Bangladesh as well we consider the nature. Pre- fabricated structure inside the nature can be a part of the nature. To create a vista all the natural elements are gathered altogether like water and trees. The big waterbody at the front side represent the delta of Bangladesh and a grandness of the functions. The trees create a buffer zone for the heat generates from the waterbody.

The EPB has been trying to aim few goals through some observations through past events The current scenario of the fair is more like an amusement or recreational fair rather than promotional of trade and commerce. Significance of the Project - Successful exhibition center can make a boom in export economy - Branding Bangladesh to the world through its architecture by placing a dot in the map - Foreign traders will get a permanent destination in our country - Bangladesh-china historical friendship, which has a great impact in our developing sector, business and cultural sector. Objective of the project - Introduction of different countries to our market - Globalize the open market to our economy - Promote foreign investment to our country - Reducing the expenses of temporary pavilions

Architectural Inspiration

Laurie Baker

Laurence Wilfred “Laurie” Baker (2 March 1917 – 1 April 2007) was a Britishborn Indian architect, renowned for his initiatives in cost-effective energyefficient architecture and designs that maximized space, ventilation and light and maintained an uncluttered yet striking aesthetic sensibility. Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and his own experiences in the remote Himalayas, he promoted the revival of regional building practices and use of local materials; and combined this with a design philosophy that emphasized a responsible and prudent use of resources and energy. He was a pioneer of sustainable architecture as well as organic architecture, incorporating in his designs even in the late 1960s, concepts such as rain-water harvesting, minimizing usage of energy-inefficient building materials, minimizing damage to the building site and seamlessly merging with the surroundings. Due to his social and humanitarian efforts to bring architecture and design to the common man, his honest use of materials, his belief in simplicity in design and in life, and his stauch Quaker belief in non-violence, he has been called the “Gandhi of Architecture.” - Wikipedia

LEARNING FROM THE GREAT ARCHITECT

Bricks to me are like faces. All of them are made of burnt mud, but they vary slightly in shape and colour. I think these small variations give tremendous character to a wall made of thousands of bricks, so I never dream of covering such a unique and characterful creation with plaster, which is mainly dull and characterless. I like the contrast of textures of brick, of stone, of concrete, of wood. - Laurie Baker

The brief by the client is specific. The club authority want some specific functions in the building. The design process is quite simple. we followed the site line to planned the building. For the further process we go through the Architects working process. This is a fabricated steel structure sothat the whole structure can be removed if needed. All the materials used in the project are locally available. We highly influenced by Architect Laurie Baker and his working process, We used brick jali in the stair way sothat it itself work as a ventilation system as well as acted as a degin element. The wall are built followiung the rat trap bond ystem to minimize ethe outer heat. Every inch of the project is done to make the structure more sustainable and corresponding to nature itself.

DORMITORY BUILDING

his project is a five storied dormitory building for the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science students who will intend to study in masters in this field. The site is located in Coxs Bazar. There is no specific defined site area as it is a bare land owned by the authority. The brief is to build a structure for the masters students which will be divided into two category – one is vip class and the general class. Ground floor will be used for several purposes like conference hall, dining hall, kitchen, laundry , office etc. first and second floor will be divided into 50% for the Vip and other half for the general students. And the upper two floor will serve the general students. The vip suits will be used by single user consisting of a attached bath and a kitchenette along with a balcony where the general room will be for two person with a bath and a balcony. As a residential living structure we used a local jail design to separate the structure from others and make it more visible.

THIS SEVEN STOREY BUILDING IS PREPARED CONSIDERING THE SITE CONTEXT, NATURAL BEHAVIOR AND THE AESTHETIC BEAUTY. TO CONSIDER THE PROPER LIGHT AND AIR VENTILATION WE NEED TO RECONSIDER THE PROVIDED PROGRAMME. SOTHAT WE COULDNOT PROVIDE ALL THE FUNCTIONS AS DESCRIBED BY THE AUTHORITY. THE FIRST AND FOREMOST CONSIDERATION OF THE DESIGN ISTO MAKE THE STRUCTURE ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY AND MORE EFFICIENT. HERE WE INTEND TO MAKE A GREEN BUILDING PROVIDING MORE OPEN SPACES , REDUCING CARBON FOOT PRINT AND MAKE A ICONIC STRUCTURE OF THE WHOLE COMPLEX.

IN THIS SIX STOREY BUILDING OPTION WE TEND TO KEEP ALL THE NESSECARY FUNCTIONS AS DESCRIBED BY CONSIDERING THE AIR AND LIGHT CIRCULATION ALMOST AT ALL THE SPACES. SOME FUNCTIONS ARE RELOCATED FOR PROPER USE OF SPACE. HERE WE PROVIDE A FIRE STAIR WHICH CONNECTED ALL THE FLOORS. SUFFICIENT VOID SPACES ARE KEPT FOR NECESSARY CIRCULATION. EACH FLOOR CONTAINS GREEN BUFFER ZONE. A 20’ X 20’ INTERMEDIATE VOID FROM 2ND FLOOR WHICH CONTINUES TO THE TOP FLOOR.

THIS FIVE STOREY BUILDING OPTION IS PREPARED ACCORDING TO THE PROVIDED INSTRUCTIONS. THE FIRE-STAIR IS EXCLUDED AS THE AUTHORITY DONOT WANT ONE. THE DESIGN IS DONE CONSIDERING THE PROGRAMMES TO BE ACCOMODATED RATHER THAN CONSIDERING THE AESTHETIC BEAUTY OF THE STRUCTURE AND IGNORING THE PROPER AIR AND LIGHT CIRCULATION.

CLIENT : BAF AUTHORITY SITE : POTENGA CHITTAGONG STOREY : FIVE STORIED STATUS : PROPOSED (2016-)

The authority decided to relocate their operational wing head quarter. Their brief is to accommodate all their adjacent amenities and facilities within a five storey building. Including the basic and primary programs , we had to design spaces for the offices , conference and multipurpose usage. The authority also want the structure as a landmark of the whole complex as well as it will be one of a kind. The site is a bare land beside a natural pond having its own scenic beauty in the midst of the green land. At the concept level, we decided to work with the form of a vintage air craft. The whole structure will be floating on a water body as a giant air vessel. The main pathway will guide through a corridor floating on the water body below. We tried to make the spaces more serene and peaceful. Passing a hectic day, when a officer enter into the building, his mind will be stress free after getting through the spaces which will lead him to a calm environment.

CLIENT : Standard Asiatic Oil Company Ltd. SITE : Airport Road, Guptakhal, Patenga,, Chittagong SITE AREA : 10,000 sft (approx.) BUILT AREA : 1525sft STATUS : UNDER CONSTRUCTION (2017-)

The brief by the client is quite straight. They want the ware house looks something different than a typical one. They provided me their plans and other related drawings. Basically i have to work on the elevations of the front two sides. As the initial concept i came across with the thought that i will hide the typical roofing outlook which are done by profile sheets. For that i will go for ACP panels to bring the look stand out from the crowd. I used come brick facades to make the structure be a part of the complex as there are some other structures of brick facades as well. I want to make the name more visible by changing the acp panel color into red. As there are two mezzanine floors for the worker, i extended the floor slabs into 5 feet sothat it can be used as a balcony as well as it bring the change in the facade.
