Pastor Alan Hush in full flight during the ‘Sharing the Joy of the Harvest’ Series at the Waterford SDA Church
T
he Evangelistic thrust of the Gregory Park Church kept moving with the latest series, the ‘Sharing the Joy of the Harvest’ Series’ - a district effort held at the Waterford SDA Church from September 2127, with Evangelist Alan Hush. Pastor Hush, an Evangelist and Pathfinder Director of the North England Conference, had conducted crusades in England, the Baltic, Africa, India, and the Balkans. The Pathfinder Director appropriately made his introduction to the Gregory Park Church as guest speaker for Pathfinders’ Day, Sabbath September 21.
The Series began with a Singspiration at the Waterford SDA Church featuring, groups and soloists from the two churches as well as performers from other churches in Portmore. Sunday featured a health fair with the usual health checks and displays. For the one-week programme, however the focus was on the Englishpreacher who declared that he had looked forward to the opportunity to speak in the Caribbean and that desire was now realized. He clearly relished that opportunity as he used the platform for honest, back-to-the-Bible Christian preaching. .
Not even the power outage early into one of the presentations or rain which forced the open-air programme indoors could stop the truth of God’s Word from being proclaimed. He would often tell of stories and experiences (some involving his family members) which depicted the working of Jesus in his life and others. Pastor Hush repeated Biblical truths of the Advent (Continued on page 3)

Sabbath School’s Day Out
B
right and early, Sunday, August 18,2013, all roads led to the Gregory Park SDA church as the young, the old and the young at heart gathered for the Annual Sabbath School outing. With much eagerness, the approximately 150 individuals waited to depart for Frenchman’s Cove Resort, Portland. A short devotion was held to thank God for the blessing of a new day and to seek guidance and protection for the trip. The journey was uneventful except for one minor incident at the entrance to the venue which resulted in a window on one of the JUTC bus being broken. Frenchman’s Cove is a beautiful, remote property that allows for a relaxing beach experience away from the large crowds that normally flock more popular local beaches. The grounds are a mix of well-maintained lawns and lush, green untamed vegetation. However, the heart of the resort is the beach, one of the most beautiful in Jamaica and also the site of a popular Tom Cruise film, Knight and Day. Nestled at the outlet of a fresh-water stream, the beach’s white sand and turquoise waters have attracted visitors to Jamaica for decades. The day was one of fun and excitement and featured a myriad of water games and ‘sand craft’. It was pure joy to relax under the warm sun then take a dip in the Caribbean Sea. Even persons who made early declarations that they would not enter the water could not resist its allure. By midday they were seen frolicking around in the crystal clear water. After a well spent day of fun, food and fellowship, it was time to return home. Worship again preceded the journey, then it was time to say goodbye to Frenchman’s Cove Resort. Many thanks to the Sabbath School team for making the day possible. - Melissa Brown

The main highlight of the day was the Grand Baptism conducted by Elders, and the Lay Workers Awards Ceremony, at which 10 longserving Gregory Park Church members were recognized. . ‘Sharing the Joy of the Harvest’ was the third series for the year involving the local Church following the REACH Programme (April 5-14), a combined effort of the Portmore Churches and the Prophecy Unveiled Seminar (June 29-July 20).

BLONDEL Campbell Pastor, Gregory Park Circuit of Churches
“There is joy among the angelic host when sinners are rescued from the snare of the devil. We at Gregory Park rejoice with them as we welcome our newest family members”
T
he third quarter started on a spiritual high and ended on the same note which is still resounding in the hearts of all the members of the Gregory Park Seventh-day Adventist church. The Prophecy Unveiled Seminar was truly a blessing. It was a timely reminder that the Word of God can be trusted as history has vindicated every event that was foretold. The next grand event will be the second
coming of our Saviour Jesus Christ. I trust that all have been blessed by the messages. Once again the members have shown that with Christ all things are possible and as such I extend congratulations to a number of individuals for their various academic, professional and spiritual achievements: ● Young Sis. Francine Green who has gained nine ones in her CSEC examinations testifying that service to our Lord and hard work truly equal success. Not to be overshadowed are those who have also achieved success in their various internal and external examinations. This should encourage all our young members that service to God is not a distraction but is central to ‘true success.’ Special congratulations to young Khalangi Gayle and Amelia Riley who also did exceptionally well in their CSEC Examinations. ● Another young achiever – Bro. Jean-Mark Davis has started Medical School this September. Let us remember to pray for Bro. Davis that he will continue to lift up Jesus in his new environment and that God will use his hands to bring healing to his people. ● Bro. Terence McLaughlin has proven that God’s plans for His people are as diverse as we are and so the Lord has placed him in the ranks of the Jamaica Defence Force. Let us continue to pray for Bro. McLaughlin that he will keep the Lord always as his guide. ● Yes, we still have members who the Lord has ordained for the special work of caring for his flock. The Lord has shown that he is no respecter of persons or gender and so Sis. Gloria Williams is the newest addition to the Board of Elders. While the additions to the Board of Deacons are: Ruel Brown, Kerlew Francis and Royston McLaughlin. We pray that they will continue to submit themselves to the leading of the Holy Spirit. The greatest reward is to hear well done from our Lord but it is indeed a joy to share in the appreciation service to all our faithful members who have toiled long and hard in the Master’s vineyard. Let us continue to pray that their strength and faith will not fail as the years go by but that they will remain resolved in the work of building up the Kingdom of God. Together, under the leading of the Holy Spirit, the members have shown the awesome work that can be done as a unit in Christ. I must extend commendations to those department leaders and their teams for their contribution to the mission of the church. The VBS Team had another great summer programme for our children which included having fun in the Lord. Well done Team VBS! We pray that the members will continue to make the focus – Jesus and His Love. I cannot end this section without mentioning the special days that were
planned and executed by the other departments. These include Bro. Damian Wilson and the Communication Department, Sis. Melissa Brown and the Youth – the programs presented were truly a ministry that testify of God’s wisdom in blessing the church with the talents needed to spread the gospel in this 21st century – ‘everlasting gospel of God’s Grace to sinners.’ Sis. Eileen Roper and her team from the Pathfinders Department had a wonderful, spirit-filled day for the members. Indeed we were blessed by the message presented by Elder Alan Hush as he allowed the Lord to use him to minister to us. Elder Hush’s ministry did not end at Gregory Park but it continued at our sister church, Waterford for one glorious week. Special thanks to all the members, officers and in particular the Elders of the Gregory Park Church who supported this program. Your presence and prayers have helped to make it the success it was. Thank you Pastor Hush and it is our prayer that God will continue to use you to inspire His people. How can I forget Camp Verley and the celebration of the Year of the Laity. Thanks again members for your overwhelming support. Continue to bask in the joy of the Lord. Long life is a gift from God and our beloved ‘Sis. B’ is truly blessed as she celebrated her 90 years of living in August. Sis. B, may the Lord continue to pour out His blessings upon you as he keeps you in His way. There is joy among the angelic host when sinners are rescued from the snare of the devil. We at Gregory Park rejoice with them as we welcome our newest family members. I encourage you all to continue to pray and study the word of God so that you may grow in the faith and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour. Even as we welcome these new members we are saddened as we say farewell to our beloved daughter, Kelly-Kay Brown. We pray that the Lord will continue to bless and guide her and her family in her new journey. The church of God is holistic in its ministry and Bro. White and the Sabbath School Team reinforced this message with a wonderful beach outing to Frenchman’s Cove. Indeed the church that prays and plays together will be the church triumphant. It was a fun filled day. As we continue on this pilgrimage, let us remain focused on the threefold truth on which our faith depends: Christ has died! Christ is risen! Christ will come again! God’s richest blessings to all.

Sis. Maxine Campbell presents the Ordination Certificate to Elder Gloria Williams, who was ordained as an Elder during the Ceremony
Pastor Blondel Campbell, Elder Gloria Williams, Head Deacon Kerlew Francis, Royston McLaughlin and Ruel Brown (left to right) kneel during the September 7, Officers’ Ordination Service
T
he words ‘call’ and ‘calling’ are frequently used in the Christian Church. Members are called from sin to salvation, called out from the world to be a peculiar people. Four officers of the Church were further ‘called’ to become leaders of the Gregory Park Congregation on Sabbath September 7 when Sis Gloria Williams joined the roll of ordained Elders, while the Head Deacon Kerlew Francis, Bro. Royston McLaughlin and Bro. Ruel Brown joined the team of ordained Deacons. Pastor Blondel Campbell in his sermon to the ordainees and the congregation insisted that ordination is not to build up a religious hierarchy in the church or a service of exaltation, but a service of consecration. “When God calls us we should not ask questions but do as he bids because He will be with us. God wants us all to ‘go’ and not ‘be afraid of their faces’. No matter who we may come across, we are to be brave because God will deliver us.” To begin, the four ordainees were escorted to the front of the church and their profiles read. Their families were then recognized and asked to relocate to the front of the church. Elder Gloria Williams accepted the Adventist message at an early age in 1961, before coming to Kingston. It wasn’t until 2007 that her membership was transferred to Gregory Park SDA Church and during that short time, she served the church as Sabbath School Teacher, member of the Prayer Band, volunteer bible worker and (unordained) elder. Head Deacon Kerlew Francis, has also served the church faithfully in a relatively short period of time. Kerlew was introduced to Adventism at an early age while growing up in Guy’s Hill, St. Catherine. Years later he relocated to the Portmore area and

started attending the Gregory Park Church. In 2003 he would make a recommitment to God and that same year, married his wife of ten years, Karen Riley-Francis, a union that has produced two children. His areas of church service has included Sabbath School Teacher, Deacon and Assistant Superintendent. Royston McLaughlin’s sojourn at Gregory Park is much longer, going back to 1989 after he and his wife migrated to the Portmore area. The newly-ordained Deacon can be described as a soft-spoken, deep-thinking and God-fearing husband, father and servant of God. He has served as a Sabbath school teacher and choir member in addition to being a deacon for many years. Ruel Brown’s membership at Gregory Park goes back to 1993 even though he made his commitment to God in 1978, where he grew up in Kitson Town St. Catherine. He is married to Sis Hortense Brown and the two have Jewelle Brown as the sole child of the union. Bro. Brown has served the church as Sabbath School Teacher and male chorale member. The officers were each presented with a certificate of ordination by Sis Maxine Campbell and the book, The Victorious Christian. The special service also included the Litany of Dedication and Prayer of Dedication offered by Pastor Campbell, where the officers knelt – surrounded by the Board of Elders. Later they were joined on the podium by their spouses who offered a warm embraced and welcomed them to the noble calling by the ordained members of their Departments.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2013
O
n July 15, 2013 at approximately 9:00 am, the doors of the Gregory Park SDA Church opened to accommodate the annual two-week Vacation Bible School (VBS) programme with twenty-six (26) children and six teachers.
The theme for this year’s VBS Programme was Universe of Adventure with Jesus. Numbers grew daily as evidenced by the fact that by day-two there were forty-six (46) children present. Each morning started with devotion at around 9:30 am. Teachers and participants spoke about Bible stories that illustrated their knowledge of the universe, the solar system, planets, stars, and sun. Other events included memory verse recital and the usual art and craft. Outside there were organized games and free time. This year’s VBS was another successful one for Gregory Park Church aided by the assistance of faithful church members, who came daily to assist in the various
areas – as well as those who contributed much-needed cash and kind. . The Director and VBS Team would like to especially thank Unit 16 as well as the community for allowing their children to be a part of this exciting, adventurous and wonderful Christian schooling, and encourage children to support the many activities the Church has for them, such as Sabbath School, Adventist Youth Programme, Pathfinder and many others. . On Sabbath July 27, members of the three VBS classes were individually presented with certificates to commemorate being a part of the out-of-this-world experience that was VBS 2013. This was followed by the viewing of intricate solar systems and planets hung from the ceiling of the children’s department and other works of art, all the handy work of the participants and teachers over the course of the hugely successful two-week period.

Whether at Aunty's office, Tom Redcam Library, or the UWI campus. I printed a copy of my exam timetable from very early and I reluctantly devised a study timetable around it, giving my self two subjects a night, excluding Fridays and Saturdays, and Sundays were flexi-sessions and Spanish oral work with Aunty Hortense, and tried to stick to the timetable as much as I possibly could. I learnt the importance of the syllabus, and reading my textbook. A major part of my studying occurred online. I used YouTube and downloadable Powerpoint presentations. I did a lot of late night work as well . ...relives exam success I also did past paper questions, lots of them. They were an integral part of studying. After every topic, I did questions. Having knowledge is great, but having knowledge and being While academic success (at the able to answer the questions is even CSEC Level) is not new to students better. of the Gregory Park Church, Francine Green set a new mark with a perfect nine ones in all the subjects she sat: Spanish, Principles of Accounts, Mathematics, Information Technology, Physics (all with distinctions), Biology, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature plus Electronic Document Preparation and Management in fourth form, for a total of ten ones. This all while being actively involved in church activities as a member of the Worship Committee, a Sabbath School Secretary and an active part of her Sabbath School Unit. We asked Francine about her journey to academic success and to offer advice to those behind her.

What is the secret to your success? I hardly watched television for the whole year and spent a lot of time praying and attending extra classes (a major part of knowing if I needed an Francine receives an award from Ms. Jennifer extra class was through discussions Williams during her school’s Prize Giving Cerewith my teacher to identify my weak- mony in October 2012 nesses). I always said that I would get nine As for studying methods, eve- ones - in accordance with my belief ryday after my classes and activities that "if you can believe it, you can
achieve it". Although I often considered the possibility of getting only 8, 7 and even 6 ones. The night when I received my results, I didn't check them. I asked my friend to, and she told my aunt who in turn told me. When I heard, I was in shock. Knowing that I had the ability to do it was one thing, but the realization that I actually had was incredible for me. . What are your academic and career goals after high school? Right now my main goal is to do well on my CAPE examinations so that I can then matriculate into a tertiary institution. Currently I am studying the first unit of advanced level Biology, Chemistry and Physics, so most naturally I want to pursue something in that area - I'm leaning towards the medical sciences but who knows where the Lord will lead me. Any advice for the current crop of GPSDA young people in high school, especially those who are going to be sitting external exams To the current fifth formers of the GPSDA, this your final year of high school is a very crucial one as it is the crowning glory of your high school experience. Everything you have learned thus far, every examination you have taken, is in preparation for your CSEC examinations. Your parents and teachers will be constantly reminding you of what they expect from you and how hard you should work, even when you don't feel like working or you don't feel the pressure. You have to get into the frame of mind for work way before that. It is very important for you to start labs and SBAs as you get them. If you have problems there is nothing wrong with asking a friend or a teacher for help. Find your weaknesses and work on them. Get familiar with your syllabi and your textbooks. Do as many past papers as you possibly can. Get a copy of your exam time table and let it be your guide on how to study, and the order in which you study. Develop a study pattern, one that works for you. Envision your success - if you want it, you'll work for it. Why settle for a one when you can get a distinction? Always remember that. Remember to take breaks and have fun with the work - but most importantly, put God first.

Health as a Lifestyle
10 Common Allergy Triggers Nearly 20% of Americans have allergies. Allergies are an abnormal response of your immune system. Your body's defenses react to a usually harmless substance, such as pollen, animal dander, or food. Almost anything can trigger an allergic reaction, which can range from mild and annoying to sudden and lifethreatening. Here are 10 of the most common triggers.
make your bedroom a pet-free zone, avoid carpets, and wash him regularly. A HEPA filter and frequent vacuuming may also help. Allergy shots may be beneficial.
Dust Mites
Pollen
rine immediately after a sting. Allergy shots are recommended to prevent anaphylaxis for some stings.
Molds Molds make allergens, irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances. Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in some people. There are many types of mold. They all need moisture to grow. They can be found in damp areas such as basements or bathrooms, as well as in grass or mulch. Avoid activities that trigger symptoms, such as raking leaves. Ventilate moist areas in your home.
Food
Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds can trigger hay fever or seasonal allergies. You might have symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, and itchy, watery eyes. Treatments include over-the-counter products, prescription drugs, and allergy shots. Prevent symptoms by staying inside on windy days when pollen counts are high, closing windows, and running the air conditioning.
Dust mites are microscopic organisms that live in house dust. They thrive in high humidity and feed on the dead skin cells of people and pets, as well as on pollen, bacteria, and fungi. Help prevent dust mite allergies by covering mattresses, pillows, and box springs, using hypoallergenic pillows, washing sheets weekly in hot water, and keeping the house free of dust collecting-items such as stuffed animals, curtains, and carpet.
Insect Stings
Animal Dander
Milk, shellfish, eggs, and nuts are among the most common foods that cause allergies. An allergic reaction usually happens within minutes of eating the offending food. Symptoms, which can include breathing problems, hives, vomiting, diarrhea, and swelling around the mouth, can be severe. Avoid all foods that you are allergic to. If you're exposed to them, you may need an epinephrine injection.
Latex
Proteins secreted by oil glands in an animal's skin and present in their saliva can cause allergic reactions for some people. The allergy can take two or more years to develop and symptoms may not go away until months after being away from the animal. If your pet is causing allergies,
People who are allergic to stings can have a severe or even life-threatening reaction. Symptoms include extensive swelling and redness from the sting or bite that may last a week or more, nausea, fatigue, and low-grade fever. In rare cases when insect bites cause a severe reaction (anaphylaxis), symptoms may include difficulty breathing, swelling around the face, throat, or mouth, racing pulse, an itchy rash or hives, dizziness, or a sharp drop in blood pressure. If you're severely allergic, you should get epineph-

Symptoms of allergies to medications, such as penicillin or aspirin, can range from mild to lifethreatening and can include hives, itchy eyes, congestion, and swelling in the face, mouth and throat. It's best to avoid the drug altogether. But if you're exposed, your doctor may recommend treating mild symptoms with antihistamines or steroids. For severe allergy symptoms, you may need epinephrine. Fragrance Fragrances found in products like perfumes, scented candles, laundry detergent, and cosmetics can cause mild to severe health problems. For most people, symptoms ease up once the scent is gone. For some, repeated exposures cause more symptoms that happen more often and last longer. There’s some question whether fragrance reactions are a true allergy or simply your body's response to an irritant.
Cockroaches
Not only are cockroaches creepy, but a protein in their droppings can be a troublesome allergen. It can be difficult to get rid of cockroaches from your home, especially in a warm climate, or if you live in an apartment building where bugs can pass back and forth to between neighbors. Treat for roaches by using pesticides, keeping a clean kitchen, and repairing cracks and holes in floors, walls, and windows to stop the from entering your home. Source: Reviewed by Hansa D. onventional wisdom holds that married people live longer and are healthier than singles. And research suggests that may be true. Studies show that married people, particularly men, are less likely to die early and are less likely to die from heart disease or stroke. But why? And what about people who are in committed relationships but haven't said "I do"? Or those who are happily single? Experts weigh in on long-term love and your well-being. What's So Healthy About Marriage? . Safer behavior. Christopher Fagundes, PhD, psychologist and researcher at The Ohio State University, says there is less risk-taking and substance abuse when couples marry - even less than if they just move in together. Socially connected. "If you’re married, ideally that’s your closest relationship," says Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, PhD, S. Robert Davis Chair of Medicine at The Ohio State University. "That means there’s a partner and close source of support readily available." . On the other hand, says psychiatrist Sudeepta Varma, MD, of NYU Langone Medical Center, people who are alone and unhappy may run the risk of social isolation. That can lead to depression and neglecting one’s health. Health helper. UCLA psychologist Theodore Robles, PhD, says, “Your spouse is a large force of influence in your own behavior. You have someone to remind you that you shouldn’t eat that; that you should exercise. That means your spouse can help you maintain healthy habits." People who are in happy marital relationships are also more likely to follow their doctors’ recommendations, research shows. Thriving Solo . Of course, people can thrive on their own. "If someone is single, it may or may not point to a difficulty in establishing close relationships," Varma says. "For some, this is the case. For others, it's simply that they have not found their life partner yet. The key would be to surround yourself with good people that care for you, and that you are willing to help."

oo much religion can harm a society’s economy by undermining the drive for financial success, according to a new study in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science. . The study of almost 190,000 people from 11 religiously diverse cultures is raising eyebrows among some of England’s religious leaders for suggesting Judaism and Christianity have anti-wealth norms. . Written by academics at University of Southampton in England and the Humboldt University of Berlin, the study found that religious people in religious cultures reported better psychological adjustment when their income was low. The study cites the Bible to show how Judaism and Christianity turn upside down the belief that the highest possible income leads to the highest possible happiness and psy-

he Central Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists has taken another step in advancing the cause of providing accurate and up-to-date information systems to all churches within its territory by making available, free of cost, a church membership software that will revolutionize the way records are kept and reports produced. The software was launched on Sunday, September 13, 2013 after a series of parish consultations. The purpose of the CHURCH MEMBERSHIP 1.0 Software is to computerize most of the Church’s record-keeping and reporting operations. These include recording keeping and reporting for the Church Clerk, Treasurer and Sabbath School Secretary. The developer of the programme, Pastor Damian Chambers, Pastor of the Clear Park District of Seventh-day Adventist Churches, has already successfully implemented the programme in his churches. “When I took on responsibility as district Pastor in 2010, I recognized that in order to do ministry effectively (especially in these times), there is a great need for having Continued on next page

Earlier this year, city officials threatened to take legal action if the Las Cruces Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church failed to comply with the requirements of the business registration ordinance.
Pastor Damian Chambers, developer of the program Church Membership 1.0, a church membership management software recently launched by CJC information at your fingertips. Yet, the Church was still recording information in a book, or at best a Microsoft Excel file. Therefore, after searching in vain for a system that would meet our unique needs in the local Congregation, I felt compelled to utilize the computer programming skills that I possessed to create a software that could manage most of the Church's information systems' demands. It took me close to two (2) years to develop this system to the point where it is workable,” Pastor Chambers stated. After entering the necessary information the computer software generates the various reports and does all the calculations and allocations. All reports are produced in the format currently being used by the Conference and track any changes that are made to critical information. Though the software accommodates the use of multiple users on different devices, the central management system syncs all the information. However, for the protection of individuals’ financial records, this information is only accessible by the treasury team and administrators. The software updates itself once connected to the internet but no information is stored on the net. Currently, the system is only available to Churches within the Central Jamaica Conference. Hopefully by the end of this year it can be made available to other conferences.
Las Cruces Ordinance No. 16-131 defines a business as “any profession, trade or occupation and all and every kind of calling,” including the work of pastors, priests, rabbis, bishops, imams and other religious leaders. . The ordinance ostensibly requires all pastor-led churches within city limits to register with the city, pay a registration fee and pass a discretionary review process before gaining approval to conduct worship services or provide pastoral care. Faith groups that are lay-led rather than clergy-led are not subject to the requirements, lawyers said. According to a complaint filed by the church in the U.S. District Court of New Mexico, there is no timeframe for an approval, and no avenue for appeal if the city denies an application. . “I’ve never seen anything like this. It blatantly goes against the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,” said Todd McFarland, an associate General Counsel for the Seventh-day Adventist world church. . Further troubling church lawyers, the ordinance requires separate registrations for each location that business is conducted. Lawyers said this stipulation could require pastors to obtain special permission before visiting sick members, providing off-site counselling or conducting evangelism. “Such religious speech and activities frequently occur in private homes, public meeting places, hospitals and funeral homes as a result of regularly occurring life events with very Source: Kemar Douglas, Central Jamaica Conference little if any advance notice,” the complaint stated. “It is impossible for an applicant subject to the ordinance to provide acAdventist Church files lawsuit against U.S. curate information because many pastoral activities are a response to unpredictable events.” . city for ‘blatant’ religious liberty violation Church lawyers also said the ordinance is “impermissibly vague” because it fails to specify what actions he Seventh-day Adventist Church last week filed a law- fall under the definition of “calling” and thus require separate suit against the city of Las Cruces in the U.S. state of advance approval.
