LIMRA REPORTS ANNUITY SALES UP! (PRESS RELEASE: FEB. 24, 2014) The Largest Quarterly Percentage Increase in 11 Years. Industry trade publications recently cited a LIMRA Secure retirement Institute press release stating total annuity sales increased 17% in the fourth quarter of 2013 hitting $61.9 billion and the largest quarterly increase in 11 years. Sales for 2013 totaled $230.1 billion which was a 5 percent increase over 2012. Single premium immediate annuity sales were up 30 percent in the fourth quarter to reach a record $2.6 billion. SPIA sales totaled $8.3 billion, which is 8 percent higher than in 2012 and another record. Sales of indexed annuities reached a new quarterly record of $11.9 billion, an increase of $1.7 billion over the prior quarter. It was also reported that Indexed annuity sales of $39.3 billion represented an increase of 16 percent in 2013 over 2012. LIMRA representative Joe Montminy stated “There are 42 million retirees in the U.S. today, which will grow to 65 million by 2025.
