Health & Kinesiology

Volume 2, Issue 4 October, 2011

H&K Crew Make Their Mark on Fit City Bergfeld Park this past Saturday was the place to be as it was the host spot for the 2nd annual Fit City Challenge. This community outreach event was all about health and fitness promotion. The Health and Kinesiology Club hosted a booth and conducted more than 50 fitness assessments for the community. These fitness assessments included testing for cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. I am very proud of our members of the Health and Kinesiology Club for volunteering their time and expertise last Saturday. This willingness to dedicate both their time and expertise

on one of their few days off just goes to show what amazing Health and Kinesiology students we have within the Department. Not only was this a great way to educate others about living a healthy lifestyle, but it was a great experience for our students too.Tara Eaton I just wanted to echo Tara’s comments related to our amazing Health and Kinesiology students. I was so proud to see our students shining so bright throughout the day. Great Job Health and Kinesiology students...you make us all proud every day! It was also great to see so many H&K Faculty there too. Dr. Marzilli

What’s New in H&K

Student’s Weigh in on “C” or Better Majority of students support raising standards Last month I sent out a survey to all of the Health and Kinesiology students asking them if they supported increasing the minimum course grade accepted within the Department from a “D” to a “C” starting in the 2012-2014 catalog year. It was exciting to see that 4 out of 5 students (80%) responded in favor of increasing the minimal standards acceptable within the Department. What was even more exciting was to read the students’ reasons for their sup-

port of the proposed policy. One student responded that “...anyone can earn a D in a class by simply completing assignments without actually gaining any knowledge in course. Raising the requirements only improves the quality of the graduates.” Another Health and Kinesiology student stated that “ By accepting and permitting admittedly below average scores, we are perpetuating mediocrity in our field. This is not only unprofessional, but in the health and well-

ness industry, can be downright dangerous.” I really appreciated our students taking the time to respond to this questionnaire. I am confident that iIf we raise the standards you will strive to surpass them. Never settle for less!! Dr. Marzilli

Message From the Chair of Kinesiology

Dr. Scott Marzilli Can you believe it is already October? It feels like we just started this semester; however, I know that we are now about 1/2 way through it. Make sure to put the time in and be prepared for your midterms. Although you can come back from poor midterm tests, it is not a great way to start!

I just wanted to use this time to welcome you back to The University of Texas at Tyler and back to our Department. I know this welcome is late; however, now that the dust has settled I have time to officially say WELCOME BACK!! I hope that your semester is going well thus far and know that although it is moving by fast, you still have time to turn things around if you are having trouble. Don’t wait until the last second to go in and see your Faculty. Believe it or not, we want you to come to our offices and visit with us! Let us help you! If you are doing great up to this point, keep that positive momentum moving forward and finish the

Semester just as well as you started it. Remember, we still have 2-months left. As for some activities to keep your stress level down, the H & K Club will be going to play paintball at the end of the month. I am sure this will be a blast. Currently, Dr. Dong, Ms. Eaton, Dr. Spier and I will be participating in this adventure. So...if you have ever wanted to get back at us for anything, here is your chance. I am sure I will have plenty of pictures to post during the next Newsletter so be prepared! Have a great month of October and I will see you around! Dr. Marzilli

Tip of the Month I believe the best way to increase your understanding of course material during a semester is to visit your Professors’ office hours!! I believe in this so much that the H&K Department has DOUBLE the faculty office hours that are required by the University! This time is for YOU!!! Use it!!! Dr. Marzilli
