INTRODUCTION

The Years 9 and 10 curriculum consists of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, PDHPE, Biblical Studies and two Electives Students also participate in Life (previously known as Chapel) and Equip classes. Information on the following pages gives details about the compulsory subjects for Years 9 and 10 and the possible Elective subjects.

Electives are a wonderful way for students to develop in areas of ability or interest. This is the first time they have been able to choose some of their subjects and we encourage them to take the opportunity to choose subjects they enjoy. When students enjoy their studies, they are more motivated to do well and more likely to experience success.

Apart from subject content, time spent in Years 9 and 10 serves as a learning experience in terms of time management, self-discipline and the development of good study and work habits. This will be important for students to build upon as they prepare for their HSC subjects in Years 11 and 12.

The Electives are all NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) courses, yet, as with all subjects, are taught within a specific Christian frame of reference. The Bible is used to present absolute standards where this is relevant to the course.

Whether an Elective will run each year depends on student interest. When making choices, we ask students to choose their first four preferences in order of priority Their subject preferences will be collected through an online software program (Edval Choice). This will help us determine which courses have interest next year and also gives students backup choices if their first preferences do not run If a student does not have enough preferences to allocate them into two elective subjects, a staff member will talk with the student about what subject(s) he or she might do.

For Mathematics, there are three levels that can be studied. The school will place students in the most appropriate course. NESA has developed these three levels to cater for students’ varying abilities in Mathematics. If you wish to discuss your child’s Mathematics course for Years 9 and 10, please contact Mr Kastelan, the Mathematics Coordinator.

During Year 10, students will complete online Literacy and Numeracy Tests. Minimum levels of literacy and numeracy skills are required in order for students to obtain an HSC. Students will need to show that they satisfy the minimum standards at some stage during Years 10-12 (and even after Year 12, if needed). Students only need to do the tests once if they show they have reached the required literacy and numeracy standards. Multiple attempts are allowed for students to successfully show achievement of the standards.

We wish all our students well as they embark on this exciting stage of their schooling.
