Communication & Ideas for Positive Outcome
T
he theme for the 2012-2013 year is, “Answering Opportunity”. I thought this was appropriate as we see so many changes headed our way in healthcare reform. The more we communicate with each other and share our ideas the better we can position ourselves for a positive outcome as these changes occur.
The 2012 GPhA Convention saw some new members of the GPhA staff in attendance: Amy DeFaveri, who manages membership development and communications, and Erica Bell, who provides support for all departments. We welcome these new staff members and if the results of the convention are any indication, we are looking forward to a great year for our association. As we start the year, we have a lot of events ahead of us. One that I would like you to put on your calendar is VIP day. The date is February 14th and it is where we get together and “storm” the capitol in Atlanta. Folks, we have 4
to get in front of our legislators and let them know we care about our profession and are willing to get in front of them with our issues. Please plan on being there with your colleagues. I am looking forward to serving as your 20122013 president and I welcome any help you can give me to serve you better.

GPhA Brings Home Its Own Olympic Gold
I
bet that all of you enjoyed all of or at least some parts of the 2012 Olympics these past weeks. I’ll bet that few of you were aware of the Olympic level efforts of your GPhA Advocacy Team this summer. Here is the story: The Georgia Primary Elections were held Tuesday, July 31 across the state of Georgia. In Georgia House District 4, in Dalton, GA a great opportunity arose this spring. The incumbent member of the House of Representatives chose not to seek re-election this term. Quick to qualify was a former challenger from the 2010 election. Shortly thereafter a second candidate was recruited and backed by the incumbent and qualified to seek the office. This set up a very interesting race, a former candidate and a candidate backed by the current incumbent meant this was an all-out battle for the right to represent Dalton in the State House of GA. Now the race really gets interesting. Walgreens pharmacist and former GPhA President Bruce Broadrick decided to enter the race late in the game. Bruce is exceptionally well-qualified for the office, but we all know voters seldom truly examine the good qualifications of a candidate. They go on name recognition, which elected officials are backing them, and what experience they have in public office. This being Bruce’s first offering for public office he was coming up short in almost every category except he has
an Olympic-winning coach who wanted to help him win the battle. That coach was GPhA’s Advocacy Team. Our first strategy was to work with Bruce to get into the inevitable primary runoff that comes from a three candidate race with a former candidate and a candidate backed by the incumbent. The GPhA Team also had its challenges. The timing of the final campaign month of July was also our 137th GPhA Convention in Hilton Head Island, SC and our fourday Executive Committee annual planning meeting. With Bruce Broadrick as our Team Captain, we brought home the GOLD on Tuesday night July, 3, when he garnered 53% of the vote and secured the right to represent Dalton in the Georgia General Assembly without a runoff. He became the fifth pharmacist in the legislature, joining Senator Buddy Carter, Rep. Ron Stephens, Rep. Butch Parrish and Rep. Buddy Harden. A special thank you to Andy Freeman, Jeff Lurey, Gene White, Robert Hatton, Eddie Madden, the NAPA Student Chapter at Mercer University and every pharmacist and tech that believed we needed another pharmacist to speak up for the profession at the State Capitol. Bruce Broadrick led the GPhA Advocacy TEAM to win the GOLD for all the pharmacists in Georgia. I am proud to be a part of an Olympic-winning, competitive team like GPhA.

registration, cpe, brown bag competition The 137th GPhA Convention is in the record books as one of the most successful annual conferences in years with over 240 attendees, more than 25 speakers and a bounty of valuable CPE workshops. Meeting at the Marriott Hilton Head Resort & Spa in Hilton Head, SC, steps away from the beach, convention attendees began their first day registering, and picking up their badge and program guide. Then off to eat a hearty continental breakfast to help jump-start the day. The morning schedule of CPE sessions on healthcare topics such as asthma, Diabetic care and geriatrics was packed full of information on advances in new guidelines, diagnosis and long-term management affecting these health-related issues. The 3rd annual Brown Bag Patient Counseling Competition kicked off the afternoon where presentations were made by ASP Chapter members from Mercer, South and UGA. Based on their summary reviews of prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs and herbal therapies prepared for a fictitious patient, 1st place went to South who took home $1,000 for their Chapter. 9

GPhA Helps Elect Bruce Broadrick On July 31, 2012, something happened that many thought would be impossible. Bruce Broadrick was elected to the State House of Representatives without a runoff. Bruce beat two other candidates with 53% of the votes cast in the Republican Primary. One of those candidates had been running since he lost in 2010 and the other was recruited and supported by the outgoing representative of House District 4.

Grassroots Campaigning for Pharmacist Bruce Broadrick Article by Austin Tull, a fourth year Pharm.D. student at Mercer COPHS Some students spent this summer working on their intern hours, but six of us took the opportunity to help a fellow pharmacist on his campaign trail to the state house. As members of NCPA at Mercer we are constantly asking pharmacists to speak to our chapter or help out with an event; this was our chance to return the favor. We know the importance of having a pharmacist speak on our behalf in the capitol. As a past GPhA president and independent pharmacy owner, Bruce Broadrick is more than qualified to be a man Georgia’s fourth district can get behind. When we met with Bruce he wasn’t just talking about pharmacy legislation- it was increasing local jobs, putting an end to misspent government dollars, and ensuring a quality education for each child. As we sat and listened to Bruce speak we saw his genuine desire to help the citizens of his district and this state. We took this message to the streets- literally. Bruce, his wife and the six of us spent the day knocking on doors in Dalton while spreading the word about the upcoming election and Bruce’s goals for the fourth district. We had countless people who would answer the door and say, “Yeah I know Bruce very well, he has my vote”. Hearing such resounding support for Bruce Broadrick from those who live and work alongside him truly speaks to his outstanding character and earnest efforts to better his community. After our day of trekking the streets of Dalton we sat down for lunch at a local hot-spot with Senator Charlie Bethel. We chatted about our day with Bruce and our hometowns as we enjoyed some southern cuisine. Many people view politicians as aloof and out of reach; Senator Bethel, however, was anything but that. Senator Bethel is a down to earth man that took time out of his workday to come eat with a couple of pharmacy students. Being a part of this grassroots effort was a rewarding experience for everyone involved and more than worth the time and effort. For some, it was their first time participating in this more personal, grassroots campaigning. Everyone took something valuable away from our time with Bruce and Senator Bethel. I would encourage each of you to get in touch with your legislators and take an active role in such a rewarding venture. After your grassroots experience, I know you too will gain insight into the process of local politics and the future of pharmacy legislation.
