MESSAGE

from Bobby Moody

I’d like to thank everyone who attended the 139th GPhA Convention. (Reprinted from Bobby’s speech on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the GPhA Convention.)

I

hope the past few days have been as good for you as they have been for me. I’d like to thank my parents, Doug and Monie Moody, and Sherri’s parents, Johnny and Annette Shoemaker, for being there. Throughout the years, I never gave much thought to becoming a member of the Executive Committee. But in 2000, Wayne Oliver asked me to be on the PharmPAC Board of Directors. He said, “many past presidents have started out in this way,” and I replied, “I’ll serve PharmPAC but I’m never running for the EC”. Several years ago, Jeff Lurey also asked me to run, and I told him there’s no way I’m ever running for the EC. Then finally, Pam and Jonathan Marquess convinced me to run while tailgating at the Ga/Ga Tech game at Bulldog Park in Athens. Well I’m here to tell you, that this has been a very rewarding experience. I would like to encourage everyone to get involved, volunteer for committees, run for region president, and if asked to run for the Executive Committee, give it some serious consideration. You won’t be disappointed. Growing up, I always attended the Georgia Nursing Home Association conventions with my parents and I understood the importance of being involved in a professional association. Not only to keep apprised of the current state of the profession, but also to network with your colleagues. The convention location this “I would like to focus year has a special place in my heart. This is where I attended my very first GPhA Convention in 1991 with fellow UGA students at the end of our first year of pharmacy school. It was at that on association convention that I met many lifelong friends for the first time as well as my wife of 20 years, I would like to encourage all pharmacy students to get involved and stay involved after membership during Sherri. graduation. You are the future of your association. When our current Executive Vice President Jim Bracewell was hired, some of our members my presidency and were unhappy with the process and the fact that he is not a pharmacist. However, Jim has lead develop a leadership your association well both financially and in advocacy and proven that it is not necessary to be a pharmacist to head our association. What is necessary is to have the ability to work with mulprogram.” tiple parties and build relationships. This year the Board of Directors took on an new challenge by approving a Transition Committee that would create transparency and oversee the hiring of future Executive Vice Presidents. This year the committee did a great job selecting three well qualified candidates to present to the EC. After our careful review we sent out a recommendation to the Board of Directors for approval and the association has the pleasure of bringing on Scott Brunner as our new EVP. We are now entering a new era for the Georgia Pharmacy Association with the hiring of Scott. I believe that Scott has what it takes to implement the goals of GPhA’s Board of Directors and grow your association. Several years ago, then President Eddie Madden instituted the Strategic Plan focusing on Association membership and advocacy through Governmental Affairs. Last year President Pamala Marquess asked the Board of Directors to add two more directives to this Strategic Plan focusing on Leadership Advancement and Professional Advancement. We have done a good job with the advocacy portion but have never seemed to get a handle on growing the membership. I would like to focus on association membership during my presidency and develop a leadership program. Membership is the life blood of any association. President Madden’s goal, when creating the Strategic Plan, was to increase your membership 20 percent by the year 2015. Well, that’s right around the corner and unfortunately our membership has dropped some since this goal was set. But I’m here to tell you, that with everyone doing his or her part to reach out to our colleagues we can reach and even beat that goal. With a larger

more active membership imagine what a difference your association can make. This is your Association and you should be proud of your membership. Tell your colleagues about the advantages of being a member. I would like to challenge everyone to make it your mission to encourage at least one colleague to join your association. Membership should be seen as an obligation. Can you imagine how our profession would be different today without GPhA fighting for us legislatively? You might not be able to give immunizations. You definitely wouldn’t have some of the audit protections that you have today. You might be filling 400 to 500 prescriptions a day with 6 or 7 technicians and you as the lone pharmacist. Everyday the Insurance and PBM lobbyists go to work trying to take more of your business. The GPhA is the only association at the Capitol trying to make life better for all pharmacists. At the APhA convention this year, a speaker made this comment: If you fail to make a difference, you won’t make a living very long. Well, it’s time to recruit your friends and co-workers and start making a difference. You need to proudly proclaim “I am a member of GPhA, MY state pharmacy association!” We all need to take pride in our chosen profession. Our non-member fellow pharmacists and those not “Our non-member active in our association need to be shown how they too can make a difference and benefit from membership. According to our bylaws the region presidents officially serve as the memfellow pharmacists bership committee of the GPhA, but I challenge each of you as a member of GPhA to be an active part of membership recruitment. There are over 10,000 practicing pharmacists in the and those not active in state of Georgia but barely 10% are members and even less than that are active. We need to increase GPhA’s total membership and encourage current members and new members to get our association need to involved and stay involved. be shown how they too I also want to begin a premier leadership program - Leadership GPhA. We need to develop our future leaders. With Scott Brunner’s guidance I believe we can create a great program to can make a difference do just that. Scott has experience in developing such programs in other associations he has and benefit from led. I envision 6 to 10 pharmacists who want to learn leadership skills that will help them both membership.” professionally and personally. It would be a year-long program meeting monthly using conference calls and at least three times throughout the year in person. In-person meetings would give the class time to meet the leaders within the association. They could sit in on the board meeting and learn what is involved in leading your association. The year of leadership growth would culminate with graduation at the GPhA Convention. Now I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but without GPhA and the convention when would you be able to get together with colleagues from other practice settings and discuss challenges and solutions that have been explored? When would you be able to see old friends from pharmacy school and former coworkers? Where else can you come and hear from the Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency and the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy? It’s time to encourage your friends to come back to GPhA and the Convention. Remind them that the Convention is a great place to get live, relevant C.P.E.s, meet old friends and make new ones, and a good time to hear updates directly from the Deans of each College of Pharmacy. And to top it all off, a great time for the family to relax at a great destination and recharge. Now I would like to ask you to encourage your pharmacy friends to come to the convention next year and experience it for themselves. In closing, I would like to remind you that we are all pharmacists. Even though we work in different settings with different goals, your association is here fighting to make the profession of pharmacy better. While we will stay anchored in excellence, it’s time to move forward with the wind in our sails. At the NCPA meeting my first year on the Executive Committee, I heard an ancient Chinese proverb that states: alone we go fast but together we go far. So let’s all work together to take your association as far as possible.

Now, let’s get this party started. n Bobby Moody GPhA President

Jim Bracewell Bids Farewell to GPhA

When my father passed away in 2001 I was struck by the idea that a prudent person

plans for the future. At that time I decided it would be a great idea to plan ahead and purchase a group of burial plots at the church cemetery in Dublin, GA. That type of advance planning tends to disturb my wife. So imagine here enthusiasm when I found out that Dublin Burial Vault and Monument Company was going out of busi-

ness and had greatly reduced prices on monuments. She was not excited about going with me to pick out a monument, or as she calls it a “tombstone”. Nonetheless after many years

“GPhA, each of you are part of me and I shall forever be humbled and honored to have served you.”

of marriage she tends to humor me. As I considered the inscription I thought about the dash between the date of birth and the date of death and how it represents the years of one’s life. So it is times like this that cause me to pause and ponder that little dash and how it will represent all of my life, all of my career, all of my work. I am extremely proud that twenty five years of my “dash” has been in the work of state pharmacy associations and I am most proud of my eight years

as the Executive Vice President of GPhA. Robert Glover, a professional friend of mine once told me of an extended mission trip where he lived for weeks with a tribe in a very remote part of central Africa. He told me that after a few days of eating the food they packed they chose to experiment and ate some of the tribe’s food. This consisted of a communal cooking pot and they found the food was pretty good if you were hungry enough. You see, what went into the communal pot was whatever members of the tribe had hunted, gathered or caught fishing. Each member of the tribe made a contribution from their efforts to bring in food for the village. One member was selected to tend the constant fire under the pot and to stir its contents frequently to be sure all the food was cooked. I was struck by what a great metaphor this was for your Association. Your Association is made up of what each member contributes of their time and talent. Your Association hires an Executive Vice President to feed the fire under the Association and occasionally stir the contents of the pot. I hope I have kept that charge. I know I have tended the “fire” for GPhA and I know I have

regularly stirred the pot, all of which has been an extreme pleasure for me to work with you. Alfred Lord Tennyson pinned a very pungent line in the poem Ulysses where King Ulysses concludes “I am a part of all that I have met. GPhA, each of you are a part of me and I shall forever be humbled and honored to have served you. n

A Call to Order T

he 139th GPhA Convention was held June 26-29 at the Wyndham Bay Point Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida. It was a great opportunity to network and meet one-on-one with other professionals in the pharmacy profession. There were great discussions regarding the Georgia Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. We learned how we can get involved in the Pharmacist Provider Status Initiative and we learned what new laws and regulations effect pharmacy. There were some great CE sessions including an introduction to aromatherapy, updates in the care of diabetes, steps

we can take to advance the profession of pharmacy, understanding Star Ratings, patient-centered care and management of asthma, and the management of hyperlipidemia. All in just four days. Plus, it was just a lot of fun for members and their families. The AEP Tennis Tournament was very competitive. We have some members who are really serious about their tennis. The Carlton Henderson Memorial Golf Tournament had a great turnout. Some of the scores do not compare to Jack Nicklaus at his best, but the tournament was played on a course that Jack built. What a thrill to play that course.

Skills training, continuing education, networking, and some fun. That’s what the GPhA Convention is all about and we feel this year’s convention hit the mark. As 2013-14 President Pam Marquess stated in her opening remarks, “GPhA has a lot to celebrate! We have had a very exciting and success filled year. We had our share of challenges but were able to overcome these due to our incredible TEAM. I am thankful for the hard work and dedication of the GPhA members, staff, legislative team, and Executive Committee. I would encourage everyone to support GPhA and to get involved in leadership.
