Lewis Hamilton is a constant front-runner in Formula 1, with the right equipment many believe he is the best of the best. In Malaysia his pace setting Mercedes W05 was on song all weekend long. After annexing pole position for the second time in two races, he then proceeded to dominate the race as he cruised to his 23rd career victory, albeit only his second one for the Silver Arrows. Hamilton is a man who wears his heart on his sleeve and shortly after jumping out of his Mercedes, dedicated his victory to the families of victims of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 tragedy which cast a sad shadow throughout the weekend at Sepang. For Mercedes it was their first 1-2 finish of the modern Formula 1 era and reward for radical changes which they made to their team. Perhaps the only concern for the team bosses is the possibility that their two drivers, good friends for now, will end up slugging it out for the world title, but that is a story for another time perhaps… Meanwhile this is Hamilton’s story, in his own words, of a triumphant weekend in Kuala Lumpur.

ewis Hamilton won the Malaysian Grand Prix with a pole-to-flag victory ahead of Nico Rosberg on Sunday in a first Mercedes one-two since they returned to Formula 1 as a works team in 2010 – the last time they did so as the F1 Silver Arrows was in 1955. The 2008 Formula 1 World Champion easily pulled away from his rivals on a dry track, with a threestop strategy, to win the race by 17.3 seconds,

Incredibly happy. My first time. It’s my eighth year here and finally got that win. job, the guys back at the factory pushing non-stop to get the car to where it is, a ground…almost, to get a one-two, I mean it’s quite special when you get a onemakes it even more special. I’m really grateful for all the work that’s done and…
I really just owe it all to the team…did a fantastic and of course to do it on Petronas…on our home -two. I’ve not had many in my career and so that …yeah, great day.

You’re sweating even before you get in the car. It’s trying to keep your body as cool as possible and then just keep you focus. Fortunately, the team were just spot on with all the pit stops and the calling, the timing. Also the info I was getting was just spot on.

I don’t think any race is ever easy. Obviously there are opportunities that are pr obviously you have to take them with both hands and today that’s what I did but after fuel, not making any mistakes, it was a massive challenge in that sense.

I would hear that Nico had stepped up the speed, reacting to those things without damaging your tyres, so without doubt it was still a great challenge, but one that I was able to do well because the car was spectacular this weekend, so really really happy, with just a great performance by the team.

I would like to think that us, as Mercedes, are the title…at least, at the moment, but there’s such a long way to go. We’ve got a lot of competition out there so I’m sure everyone’s going to be pushing and so we need to stay on it.

It’s always a great challenge here and today wasn’t as hot as it has been in the past, i would say. Generally, this year, with a lot less downforce, it’s a lot less physical – still really physical but it’s not as much as years and years ago when we had so much downforce and particularly last year when we had a lot of downforce, but it’s still a serious workout. Fortunately I’m just grateful my drink machine worked, even though it’s like drinking hot tea, it did the job. I think the team has done a great job in terms of weight this year. We know we’re not having to cut things off to get to the weight.

I’m really happy with our result today. It was a very close session and I’m relieved to come away with pole position as it was pretty tense towards the end. The lap was far from being my optimum: I should have been able to eke out a little more time but thankfully it wasn’t needed. Conditions were incredibly difficult and it would have been so easy to get it wrong today. At times towards the end it was almost impossible to see if anyone was behind me. The team have done a great job once again, we have a great car, and we now have to convert this performance tomorrow.

hamilton: happy with our progress I’m happy with our progress over the two sessions today and we were able to complete our programme. The car feels good and our focus was on trying to understand the tyres and make sure the balance is right for the weekend. There are areas where we can improve so we’re keeping focused on our own work, rather than being distracted by what the others are doing. It was pretty tough with the temperature and humidity and it’s so important to keep hydrated here. We would love a good result this weekend, particularly as it is the home race for Petronas, but it’s impossible to predict what will happen at this stage. It’s one of the trickiest races of the year so we just have to make sure we tick all the boxes and that it all comes together for us.
