The GPS Music Showcase is an extraordinary day of music making culminating in performances by students from all nine GPS schools in Choir, Big Band, Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra. The 2023 GPS Music Showcase promises to be a memorable musical extravaganza.

Welcome

As Chairman of the GPS Association for 2023, and on behalf of the nine GPS Headmasters and Principals, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2023 GPS Music Showcase.

Tonight promises to be a wonderful evening celebrating the creativity, talent and dedication of students from across our GPS community We also pay tribute to the leadership and commitment of the teachers and professional musicians who inspire and develop our students, and our wonderful community of parents and families who provide invaluable support and encouragement.

I look forward to sharing a magnicent evening of music with you all.

Symphony Orchestra Conductor

Mr Paul Dean

Brisbane born and bred clarinetist Paul Dean is widely regarded as one of Australia's foremost musicians in his multiple capacities as soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, composer and Artistic Director. He is currently Associate Professor and Head of Winds at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, co-Artistic Director of Ensemble Q, founding member of the Endeavour Trio and a member of the Australian World Orchestra. He was a founding member and Artistic Director of Southern Cross Soloists and the Bangalow Music Festival, before his appointment as Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne

In 2022 Paul won the Paul Lowin Orchestral Composition Prize for his rst symphony which was commissioned by the Australian World orchestra.

As a composer he recently held the title of Composer in Residence for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and has been commissioned to write works for major artists and orchestras including the Australian World Orchestra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, and for major international artists including Jack Liebeck, Michael Collins and Torlief Thedeen. He is the conductor of the Queensland Youth Orchestra 2 and the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra.

Big Band Conductor

Mr Leon Wensley

Leon Wensley is the Head of Arts and Director of Performance at Ipswich Grammar School and oversees the Instrumental Music Program conducting music ensembles and choirs. In the classroom, Leon teaches Senior Music and Middle School Drama while directing the extra-curricular performance program across The Arts P-12. Leon has collaborated with numerous arts organisations in Australia as both a performer and conductor over his 25-year career including the ABC, Queensland Symphony, Camerata Chamber Orchestra, Queensland Pops Orchestra, Queensland Conservatorium and Queensland Department of Education and Training.

Leon holds both graduate and post graduate qualications in Music and Education from Griffith University and was recipient of the Sydney May Memorial Scholarship in 1993. Previously winner of the 4MBS Chamber music prize, Qld Yamaha Woodwind Competition and Conservatorium Woodwind Prize, Leon is a passionate advocate for community arts engagement and has been an integral part of increasing boys participation in the Arts at IGS.

Concert Band Conductor

Mr Stuart Bent

Stuart Bent started learning trombone in the Queensland Education music program in Bundaberg, before attending the Queensland Conservatorium of Music graduating with a Bachelor of Music

Stuart has performed regularly with many different professional groups including QLD Symphony, QLD Pops and QLD Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as many other smaller ensembles.

Stuart has also toured both nationally and internationally with different groups, including Opera Australia.

Stuart has been heavily involved in the brass band scene, including being a life member and past secretary of Brisbane Excelsior Band. As well as being long

serving Principal Trombonist of the band, he has won solo competitions in QLD, Australia and New Zealand as well as performing in the National Australia Brass band

As an educator, Stuart is a highly passionate and experienced teacher who has been teaching for more than 20 years including 15 years at Citipointe Christian College, 7 years at Anglican Church Grammar School and is currently in his 6th year as Head of Brass and Percussion at Brisbane Boys’ College.

Choir Conductor

Peter Ingram

Peter Ingram is a noted conductor of school, university and community choirs throughout Australia. He is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and Florida State University (U.S.A.) where he gained his master’s degree in choral conducting under the guidance of Rodney Eichenberger and Andre Thomas. Previously the conductor of various choirs at both the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Griffith University) and the University of Queensland, he currently conducts two choirs as part of the acclaimed community arts organization Voices of Birralee: young adult ensemble Resonance of Birralee (co-conductor) and project-based adult choir Birralee Recycled

Peter is Head of Music at Brisbane Grammar School where he directs several choirs including the Grammarphones which, in 2010, was awarded the City of Vienna Prize as champion choir at the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival. He is a longserving committee member of the Australian National Choral Association (ANCA) at both state and national levels, serving as national president for three years and president of the Queensland Chapter for ve years. He was chair of the organising committee for the ANCA national conference Choralfest in 2017. He is in demand as a guest conductor, adjudicator, clinician and workshop leader at various choral events throughout the country.

In case of an alert patrons should remain calm, look for the closest EXIT sign in GREEN, listen to and comply with directions given by the in-house trained attendants and move in an orderly fashion to the open spaces outside the venue
