W E LC O M E

Welcome to this very special GPS Centenary Music Showcase. Tonight, we look forward to a magniďŹ cent celebration of the musical talent, creativity and commitment of students throughout our GPS Community. We applaud the inspirational leadership of the dedicated tutors and professional musicians who enrich the musical development of our students, and the invaluable support of our wonderful parent community. I am delighted to welcome our guest His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland, to help us mark this special Centenary year. I wish you a wonderful, memorable evening. Dr. Alan Campbell Headmaster, Anglican Church Grammar School, Host of the GPS Centenary Music Showcase

As Chairman of the GPS Association in this milestone year, and on behalf of the nine GPS Headmasters and Principals, I am delighted to add my welcome to that of our host for this evening, Dr Alan Campbell. This showcase of musical excellence is a superb way to open our anniversary year, and bring to life one of our signature Centenary themes – the GPS Spirit of Fellowship. We have a precious opportunity this year to pause in our busy 21st Century lives, to look back and celebrate the story of our proud GPS traditions, to be thankful for the contribution of so many individuals today, and look ahead to the next chapter and the GPS of tomorrow. I look forward to sharing the Centenary celebrations with you throughout this momentous year, beginning with tonight's special musical extravaganza. Mr. Peter Fullagar College Principal, St. Joseph's Nudgee College, GPS Association Chairman for 2018

THOMAS JACKSON Tom began learning guitar at the ripe age of eleven, after watching many great guitar performances on television. Driven by his love of music, he has worked hard and come a long way in just 5 short years of training. Tom is currently in Year Twelve and studying Music as one of his OP subjects. Tom is tutored by Mr Walter Stapf, who himself is a working professional musician and Nudgee Music Tutor. Walter and Tom enjoy working together as they have a mutual respect for each other's ability and passion for guitar. Even though Tom only started at Nudgee in 2015, he has made an indelible mark on the College Music scene. Starring in Nudgee's Rock Band 3 in 2015, he quickly progressed to becoming the Lead Guitarist in the College's Premier Rock Band, Rock Band 1. This is a position he has held for the last

two years. Not content to be pigeonholed as a pure Rock Guitar God, Tom has shown he is equally versatile in many styles of music, and currently also holds the position of Lead Guitarist with Nudgee College Stage Band and Nudgee Guitar Ensemble. In these groups Tom has toured Queensland and NSW working with young musicians from many walks of life. Tom is looking to further his music career after Secondary School as professional musician. To this end he has already started a successful duo with his fellow classmate and vocalist - Stephen Lean (who is in the GPS Choir as well). They have featured at the Annual Nudgee Alumni Gala to critical acclaim, they are in great demand for College Events. The Duo are working on getting their busking licence to also conquer greater Brisbane!

MARCO TARABORRELLI Marco Taraborrelli's (GT2016) career as a guitarist started as a student performing in the Terrace big bands and musical productions. He quickly secured a place in the Terrace Jazz Orchestra, the College's premier big band, and held that position for four years. Outside of College life, Marco was performing professionally with his father, Domenico Taraborrelli, who is well known on the Brisbane music scene for his performances with Irish band Murphy's Pigs, and numerous guest appearances with the Queensland Pops Orchestra. After graduating from Terrace in 2016, Marco secured the guitar chair in the Brisbane Big Band, the resident big band at the Brisbane Jazz Club for over forty years. He continues to perform numerous engagements in a variety of settings from duos and small groups (Latin MaďŹ a) to big bands. Marco has also performed in the pit band for the musical Rent at the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of Melt 2017, and was recently involved as a musical extra in the ďŹ lming of the movie Aquaman. In addition to his busy musical life, Marco is also studying a Bachelor of Industrial Design at QUT.

Student Reflection “Being part of the GPS Music Showcases has always been important to me. Since my first GPS singing experience in year 5, all the way up to now, the GPS Showcase has remained one of the most noteworthy moments of the school year, not only due to the stimulating repertoire, the unique expertise of each conductor, the impressive hall, or the sheer, exciting magnitude of all the ensembles — also because it helps place music in the bigger picture, showing us what other musicians our age, in our city have to offer and teach. The GPS showcase will remain with me as a turning point of my musical learning.” Nicholas Hughes Anglican Church Grammar School

Student Reflection “I have been involved in the GPS Music Showcase Symphony Orchestra for 3 years and have enjoyed every minute of it. From the experience, I have gained many valuable tips for my viola playing from leadership in a small ensemble to understanding the context and style of a piece of music. The opportunity to work with skilled and professional conductors and tutors has been a privilege. On behalf of the students, I would like to thank all of the enthusiastic teachers who have assisted us in the GPS Music program. Sebastian Masel Brisbane State High School
