In 2018, The Great Public Schools' Association of Queensland (GPS) reaches its centenary, providing an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate one hundred years of the GPS 'spirit of fellowship'. This year, it is a special privilege to welcome competitors, spectators and staff from GPS member schools to this great occasion of the GPS Centenary Rowing Championships – the Head of the River. The Rowing Championships have been an important feature of the GPS sporting calendar for almost as long as the Association has been in existence, and this Centenary year marks the ninety-sixth event. The Wyaralong Dam has provided a spectacular backdrop for the full GPS 2018 regatta season, culminating in today's Head of the River. It promises to be a momentous occasion showcasing the very best of GPS – proud tradition, courage, dedication, rivalry, passion, respect and honour – in both victory and defeat. The GPS Association is delighted to wish all competitors well at this historic GPS 100 event.

GPS Centenary Rowing Championships Competition Information CONDUCT OF THE REGATTA:
!
Member schools should note that reviews during competition are not an alternative to pursuing a protest through boat race officials. Rather, matters within the purview of the officials should be dealt with accordingly, as outlined above (see Protests under Rowing Australia rules). Resulting outcomes and/or matters relating to fairness and the values and objectives of competition within the GPS Association may, from time to time, be the subject of a GPS Review.
!
The GPS Executive Officer (GPS EO) is responsible for administering the procedures in the event of a review request. GPS Review Request Forms may be obtained from the GPS EO on the day of the Head of the River.
!
Final results will not be valid and trophy presentations will not be made until the GPS EO announces the result of the review.
The conduct of the racing program on the day is the responsibility of the Head Referee. Please Note: The only motorized boats allowed on the Course are the Official boats. LANES !
Lane allocations may be subject to the changed weather conditions on the course.
!
The lane numbering system in Queensland was changed by Rowing Queensland in December 2010 when it was decided that a uniform numbering system would be introduced with all courses to be numbered Lane 1- 10 from the left hand side when looking down the course from the start line.
OBJECTIONS, PROTESTS OR GPS REVIEW !
The process for lodging Objections and Protests will be as per the Rowing Australia Rules.
!
A GPS Review may be sought by member schools through their relevant GPS Sport and Activities Committee member and/ or the GPS Rowing Sub-Committee member.
!
HELICOPTERS AND USE OF DRONES All external requests for media access to the event are to be directed through the GPS Executive Officer. The GPS does not sanction the use of helicopters or drones for the event without prior authorisation. Please note: 1. We will have to stop the racing if it is ‘unsafe’ and / or will disadvantage crews on the water, i.e. a drone overhead or in the proximity of crews and crowds.
Reviews relating to matters which develop during the conduct of the regatta need to be requested as a matter of urgency, not later than fifteen (15) minutes after the result has been officially announced.
2. CASA have regulations against flying over populated areas and sporting events and any person found to be in breach of these regulations will be reported. 3. RQ officials have been instructed that in the event of an unauthorised drone flying near the event area, they are to initiate a cessation of the regatta racing program until the craft is landed.

Student Reflection “People ask why we row. Every morning that I wake up and I go rowing I realise why I do it. It is for the other eight boys in my crew. Rowing builds a bond like no other. Every crew, no matter what, gels and becomes one. This is the beauty of rowing and this is why I row.” Fred Fewtrell Anglican Church Grammar School 2018 Captain of Rowing 2

Student Reflection
1st IV 1930's
“I am privileged to be a part of the GPS100 Head of the River, leading the bluered-blue, in my fifth and final year at State High. Head of the River is the culmination of hundreds of hours of training, coming down to a couple of minutes of racing. GPS rowing has taught me that the things we do behind the scenes often go unnoticed, but really make the difference to our success. Going that extra mile in training knowing that it may not make a difference today but if we do it each and every day it will become the difference that counts.” Niall Waller Brisbane State High School, 2018 Vice-Captain of Boats, First VIII Coxswain

NC Snapshot Student Reflection
2003 Head of the River
“Head of The River is like no other event. Seven schools, battling it out race by race. By far it is the pinnacle of QLD GPS racing and furthermore, it being the QLD GPS 100 years celebration, makes the event even more special. I have experienced so many different feelings from my Head of The River journey, both highs and lows. That is why I love the

racing competition, taking me to new levels where I thought I would never get to.” Timothy Mark St Joseph's Nudgee College 2018 Captain of Boats (NC HOR 2013-2018)
GPS Centenary Rowing Championships Emergency Response Plan FIRE WARNING SYSTEM There is no electronic Emergency Warning System for the Finish Tent. This system will need to be activated manually by the Event Controller or the Rowing Queensland Officials. In the event of an emergency requiring action on the part of the public then a PA announcement and the sounding of the alert tone “Barp Barp” will occur. Should an evacuation be ordered the sound you will hear is “Whoop Whoop”. All persons having a portable intercom will (under normal circumstances) be given instructions EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY POINT
EVACUATION PROCEDURES !
When instructions are given or on hearing the Alert Tone “Barp Barp”, you must prepare for an evacuation.
!
The Event Controller is to announce that all activities should be held up until final notice and that the Supervising Staff are to return to their school’s marshalling area.
!
The Event Controller will receive and or provide further directions from the Chief Fire Warden or Rowing Queensland Venue Management Staff via the UHF Radio provided.
ANY ADVICE THE PUBLIC REQUIRE WILL BE GIVEN OVER THE BROADCAST SYSTEM
EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY POINT
When the order to evacuate is given, or when hearing the Evacuation tone “Whoop Whoop”, the Event Controller is to announce that an evacuation of the area is required and that all persons are to move directly away to an open space as indicated on the plan as an Assembly Area and wait for further instructions before moving back into the event zone. 12

Student Reflection “Head of the River provides the kind of energy and exhilarating pressure every schoolboy rower thrives on. The aura around the phrase “Head of the River” and what it requires of boys who want to win is what inspired me. It gave me a purpose to train the hardest I have ever trained, forced my mental strength to a point I could not have imagined, and has produced bonds with the other boys in the boat that I will cherish forever. Hearing the roar of the crowds and my Terrace brothers coming into the last 300m of my schoolboy rowing career was an electrifying feeling, like no other I have ever experienced it was one of the greatest days of my life.” Nathan Cox St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace GPS Rower, 2013-2017

GPS Centenary Rowing Championships Wyaralong Dam
Completed in 2011, Wyaralong Dam is South East Queensland's newest dam. The dam holds 102,883 mega litres of water at full supply. The dam has provided a spectacular setting for the full regatta season in 2018, culminating in GPS Centenary Head of the River Championships.
The excellent on-water facilities are being further developed and planned improvements to the infrastructure will enhance large events such as ours. Rowing Queensland have shared their plans which present an exciting prospect for the future of rowing in Queensland.

Student Reflection “Participating in the 2017 senior Head of the River made me realise the crew which is willing to drag themselves through hell for the longest period of time will be the crew that stands in triumph. Hugh Robinson The Southport School Captain of Boats 2018 TSS 2018 First VIII

GPS Centenary Rowing Championships Wyaralong Dam Development Update
Queensland Government with a matched $800,000 grant and the total cost of the development to the stage 2 level is $2 million. Hutchinson Builders are partnering with Rowing Queensland to deliver the next stage of the development but your help is needed. If you can assist with building, electrical, earthworks, landscaping or any other services please get in touch with Rowing Queensland. If you cannot help with services then make a tax deductible donation at https://asf.org.au/projects/rowing-queensland-limited/. The development is ready to go, the only thing that is missing is your support.
The development of the Queensland State Rowing Centre at Wyaralong has continued since last year's Head of the River. Rowing Queensland has now received all the development approvals to get started on the earthworks and construction of the rowing sheds and car parks. With the support of all the rowing community we will see a very dierent Rowing Queensland headland and car parking situation for next year's GPS season. Rowing Queensland is in the unique situation of having to own and fund the facility unlike most other sporting facilities (such as the new Anna Meares Velodrome, Qld Netball Centre and Qld State Hockey Centre) that are all government owned and funded. The project is being supported by the

Student Reflection “Whether you row in a blue or yellow boat, a red or green zootie, the objective is the same - row 2000 meters faster than the six boats next to you. There are many factors that contribute to this ultimate outcome, one of the most important is relinquishing the sense of 'self' for the importance of

'crew'. We row for our school and for the
