Welcome As Chairman of the GPS Association for 2019, and on behalf of the nine GPS Headmasters and Principals, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2019 GPS Music Showcase. Tonight promises to be a wonderful evening celebrating the creativity, talent and dedication of students from across our GPS community. We also pay tribute to the leadership and commitment of the teachers and professional musicians who inspire and develop our students, and our wonderful community of parents and families who provide invaluable support and encouragement. I look forward to sharing a magniďŹ cent evening of music with you all.

Guest Choir Conductor

Mr. Paul Holley OAM Mr. Paul Holley is a choral conductor, educator and motivator. His personal warmth and passion for choral music have inspired many singers to discover and develop their skills and achieve personal fulďŹ lment as choral musicians. With over 25 years of teaching experience in secondary schools and many years of working with adult community choirs Paul knows how to connect with singers of all ages and enjoys collaborating with them in the music making process.

International Male Voice Festival in Cornwall in 2007. In 2012 they were awarded Choir of the World at Kathaumixw in Canada. Resonance of Birralee, a youth choir for young adults has toured nationally and internationally most recently to perform at Anzac Centenary Commemorations in France and Belgium. Paul is also the co-conductor of the national youth choir Gondwana Chorale that recently toured the UK and the Baltics.

Paul is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music where he studied choral conducting with Dr John Nickson.

As a choral educator Paul is dedicated to excellence in choral education and regularly features as guest conductor/ clinician at festivals, conferences and music competitions throughout Australia. He also contributed a chapter to the book Male Voices: Stories of boys learning through making music (S D Harrison, Ed, 2009, ACER).

Presently Paul is the Associate Director of Voices of Birralee and conducts two ensembles, The Birralee Blokes and Resonance of Birralee. In 2006, The Birralee Blokes won the ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year competition before performing to acclaim at the 3rd

In January 2016, Paul was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to choral music. 03


Choir Conductor

Miss Rebecca Thomas Miss Rebecca Thomas is an active and passionate music educator, conductor and performer, holding Bachelor of Music/Education and Master of Music Studies degrees from the University of Queensland and an Australian Kodály Certificate. Specializing in early childhood and primary music education for 13 years, she taught and conducted students from 15 months to 13 years of age for Brisbane Catholic Education and Ormiston College. She has been inspiring Middle School boys in Years 5-8 and conducting two enthusiastic treble voice choirs at Brisbane Grammar School since 2017.

and internationally with Voices of Birralee, the Queensland Kodály Choir and Brisbane Grammar School. She is a founding member of Fusion Vocal Ensemble that was invited to perform at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Seoul, South Korea (2014), and ANCA ChoralFest in Melbourne (2015), Brisbane (2017) and Fremantle (2019).

Rebecca regularly presents at local, national and international conferences and her teaching was featured as part of the KMEIA Open Classrooms series and recognized in the NEiTA National Inspirational Teaching Awards. She is looking forward to presenting two new workshops at the International Kodály Symposium in Malaysia in August 2019, showcasing her innovative work with the 'Mini Men' at BGS.

Her recording credits include violin and vocals for the BCE Music Fire project and seven Andrew Chinn CDs, which are used extensively in Catholic schools around Australia and overseas.

Rebecca has been a member of the ANCA Qld/NT Committee since 2015 and has engaged with several school and community choirs, including three years conducting The Birralee Piccolos and Kids ensembles. She has conducted, performed and toured nationally

Rebecca is dedicated to providing all children with an opportunity to grow in confidence while making music together in an engaging and enjoyable environment. 04


Concert Band Conductor

Dr. Heather McWilliams Dr. Heather McWilliams earned a B.A. in Tuba Performance from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (1992), and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching from the Queensland University of Technology (1993) before teaching in Western Australia and Queensland. In 1999 she moved to the USA where she completed a Master of Music Education (2000) and a Ph.D in Curriculum and Instruction (Music Education) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (2003). Dr. McWilliams then worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, teaching classes in Music Education and General Education, as well as teaching the Tuba/ Euphonium studio and conducting the Symphonic Band.

York City. In Oshkosh, Dr. McWilliams was the Principal Tuba of the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra, and the UW Oshkosh Faculty Brass Quintet.

As a tuba player she won the Queensland Brass Band E-flat Tuba Championship (1993) and in that same year toured the USA as Principal Tuba of the Australian Wind Orchestra performing at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and Carnegie Hall in New

Since returning to Australia, she has presented at the Maryborough Music Conference and been commissioned to write articles on low brass pedagogy, as well as instrumental music recruiting practices for the annual Yamaha Music Education Guide.

Dr. McWilliams has been a clinician and adjudicator in the USA and Australia including the Melbourne Schools’ Bands Festival. She has presented research papers at state and national conferences including the Wisconsin Music Educators’ Association Conference and the Australian Society of Music Educators Conference. Dr. McWilliams returned to Australia with her family in 2015 and is currently teaching for Education Queensland, based at Brisbane State High School.

Symphony Orchestra Conductor

Mr. Mitch Buckley Mr. Mitch Buckley is a Gold Coast based musician and educator. Having taught trumpet at a number of schools around Brisbane and the Gold Coast, he is currently a classroom and Instrumental Music Teacher at The Southport School.

Mitch is a State and National Soprano Cornet Champion, playing Soprano and Principal Cornet with Brisbane Brass for almost 10 years. He has performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Brisbane Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras and is the current Principal Trumpet of the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra. Mitch is passionate about Music Education and enjoys helping young students become better people by helping them achieve their musical goals.

In addition to conducting a number of ensembles and teaching young beginner trumpet players at the school, he also enjoys coaching cricket and rugby. He graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 2008 with a Bachelor of Music Studies majoring in classical trumpet, before undertaking a Diploma in Secondary Education in 2010.
