CUSTOMS and IMMIGRATION

METRIC CONVERSION

Camping is available throughout the region in municipal, provincial and private campgrounds. Camping rates vary. Please refer to the Camping Guide pages in this publication for a full listing.

Since June 2009, everyone from every country arriving in Canada by air, land, and sea has needed a passport or equivalent travel document. (Some exceptions apply to children’s passport requirements). Besides an upto-date passport, visitors may instead have an equivalent travel document, such as a NEXUS card. For more information contact- Canada Border Serves Agency. Canada uses the metric system. All highway and traffic indicators are in kilometres (km) and km/h, gas is sold by the liter, temperature is measured in Celsius, and the electrical current is 110 volts. 1 kilometre = 0.62 miles 100km/h = 62 mph 3.8 litres = 1 gallon Temperature 25°C = 77°F Celsius readings are oriented from the temperature at which water freezes which is set as zero in Celsius; this is 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURES • The Grande Prairie Region has 314 sunshine days per year on average. • Average winter season temperature is -12°C (10.4°F) • Average summer season temperature is 12.8°C (55°F). Summers can bring thunderstorms, although they are not as frequent or as severe as those in southern Alberta. • Grande Prairie gets 295 mm (11.6”) of rain and 179 cm (70.66”) of snow per year on average. Snowfall amounts, however, vary greatly from year to year. • Being fairly close to the Alberta foothills, it can get quite windy in the Grande Prairie Region, especially in the spring and fall. Chinooks are not an unheard of occurrence in the Grande Prairie area.

BANKING and CURRENCY Traveler’s cheques and credit cards are accepted at most commercial establishments, banks and currency exchange offices. Banking hours range from 9 am to 8 pm, Monday to Friday; some banks are open Saturdays. Most automated teller machines (ATMs) accept one or more of the following networks: Interact, Cirrus, or Plus. They are located at all banks and in retail areas. Refer to the Relocation pages in this publication for a list of Bank locations.

CHURCHES There are over 50 churches in the Grande Prairie region. Contact 780-539-7688 for a comprehensive list or more information on denomination, and service times.

Does the call of the wild call out to you? Well, then the region around Grande Prairie would be the one calling you! The Grande Prairie region is the perfect place if you love the wilderness and big game hunting.Whether you are a conventional hunter using a rifle, or enjoy the traditional use of a bow, Grande Prairie offers exceptional scenery with all the excitement and adventure anyone can dream about. In the spring, the region is a hunter’s paradise for trophy black bear. During the fall, bow and rifle hunters try for trophy elk, white-tailed deer, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and moose. The area also offers fine game bird hunting for goose, duck and grouse. Regional sporting goods stores also sponsor the annual Great Northern Whitetail Buck and Bull Elk Hunt and Awards Dinner every autumn. Hunting regulations and special licensing requirements vary depending on the type of hunting. Hunting is absolutely prohibited in all national and provincial parks. To get updated information on current hunting seasons, licensing, and other regulations, please refer to the Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations available at www.albertaoutdoorsmen.ca or mywildalberta.com or pick up a copy of the Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations at any licence vendor. Whether you just love to fish, or are looking for that once in a lifetime experience, fishing in Alberta waters offers opportunities for all anglers. The Grande Prairie area offers some great fishing, whether you’re looking for trout, pike (jackfish), walleye, perch, or grayling. Many of the lakes are stocked with rainbow, cutthroat or brook trout. Many rivers have some of these same species as well as bull trout, grayling and rocky mountain whitefish. Bull Trout is the provincial fish of Alberta and because it is still listed as a threatened species, it remains as catch and release only. If walleye, pike or perch is what you are after, there are plenty of sources for these as well, both lakes and rivers with camping available.

www.cityofgp.com Grande Prairie is the vibrant regional hub of the Peace Country with a population over 60,000 and a trading area that encompasses more than 250,000 people. Grande Prairie is aptly named for the vast and fertile prairie surrounding the City. Fur trading opened up the area, and Grande Prairie quickly became an agricultural settlement after the turn of the 20th century and remains an economic pillar of the region. This sector produces millions of tonnes of barley, canola and wheat, as well as world-renowned red fescue used in turf grass and the largest share of Canada’s honey production. The regional industry continues to strengthen with the construction of Viterra’s new highthroughput grain terminal and the designation of the Beaverlodge Research Farm as the National Honey Bee Diagnostic Laboratory. The region has a wealth of natural resources including oil, natural gas, coal, and lumber. Many major corporations, from Canfor to EnCana, have operated in the region for decades, providing jobs and growth to the City and its residents. As the world’s appetite for resources continues to expand.

A Little History Grande Prairie is well-positioned to serve markets at home and abroad. In addition, tourism is becoming an increasingly important factor with new attractions like the Eastlink Centre and the soon-to-be built Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, adding to the draw of the region’s natural beauty. As well, our business-savvy community has been recognized by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business as the Most Entrepreneurial Community in Canada for three consecutive years. Whether it is parents pushing a stroller, children filling the Eastlink Centre, or families biking one of the many trails, there are signs of youth everywhere you turn. Grande Prairie is an exceptionally young City, with a median age of 30.3 years compared to the national median of 40.6. Thanks to modern amenities from a recently renovated art gallery, new library, contemporary schools, a new state of the art Hospital (projected to open in 2017) along with a spectacular park that runs through the community, Grande Prairie is a great place to call home and raise a family.

Location, Location, Location One of Grande Prairie’s greatest assets is its geographical positioning!Grande Prairie is strategically located at the heart of a regional transportation network. West of the city, via HWY 43, connects to British Columbia and is only 108 km/67 mi to Dawson Creek-Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway. Two hours, south on Hwy 40 will bring you into Grande Cache, the start of mountain adventure, with white water rafting, hiking, beautiful lakes and spectacular scenery. Two more hours and you are in the majestic Rockies of Jasper National Park; offering visitors world-class skiing, hot springs, restaurants and more! To the north, along Highway 2, you’ll encounter the majestic Peace River Valley while crossing the historic Dunvegan Bridge and connect to the Mackenzie HWY to the Northwest Territories.

Retail Shopping has exploded in the last year, as well as having over 90 stores in the Prairie Mall and various private shops in the downtown core; we now have a plethora of new box stores open. In the last year, HomeSense, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Pier 1 Imports, Bouclair, the Gap, Old Navy, Sleep Country, Moore’s and Browns Socialhouse and so many more have all opened their doors.

Love the Outdoors!

Outdoor City Initiatives

Muskoseepi Park

Community Garden

Grande Prairie has an abundance of neighbourhood parks. Muskoseepi Park is the jewel of the community, running through the centre of the City. Along with both paved and natural trails through the urban forest for walking, biking and cross-country skiing, , large playground, allseason pond for fishing and skating, outdoor basketball, tennis and lawn bowling courts, mini-golf, bird watching facilities, and quiet places to just sit and enjoy the solitude. Muskoseepi Park is the place to be for entertainment during the summer. Grande Prairie’s Canada Day, Heritage Day and Municipal Government Day celebrations are held in the Park. The outdoor Amphitheatre, with its hillside seating, provides the stage for concerts, dance performances, and other shows throughout the season. Stop by the Pavilion for a bite to eat during the summer. The Park also offers fun and educational programs for schools, youth groups, adults and children of all ages.

The City has started a pilot community garden at the corner of 101 Avenue and 98 Street with the support of Grande Prairie Garden Club and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. If residents are interested in starting their own community garden in their neighbourhood:

Crystal Lake Waterfowl Refuge Located in the northeastern corner of the City, Crystal Lake is a sanctuary for nature in the midst of the community. Many species of waterfowl, including Grande Prairie’s signature trumpeter swans, call Crystal Lake home. It is a great place to walk the dog, hike, or simply relax and watch nature’s beauty unfold.

They can work with their community association, if it exits, to see how much interest there is and/or Spend a summer volunteering at the community garden off of 98 Street.

Yard Makeover Contest The contest started in 2010, offering City residents an opportunity to win a green yard makeover. Winners receive products and services such as landscape design, materials, and labour. The goals of this initiative are to increase awareness of alternative landscaping methods, promote unconventional ground covers such as mulch and rock, the use of native and zone appropriate plant species, and to decrease the dependence on grass as a single or primary landscape cover, and lower water consumption. All the Attractions, Events, Golf Courses, Camping and other pertinent information can be found on other specific pages in this Guide.

15 kilometres west of La Glace is the Hamlet of Valhalla Valhalla is home to many Norwegian

Glace traces is roots back to the early 1900s. Folklore has it that it was named after Chief La Glace who drowned in 1909 in nearby Valhalla Lake while trapping muskrats. Within the Hamlet is La Glace Heritage Park, which has beautiful brick-pathed gardens and a Cairn in memory of the well-respected native leader plus many pioneers of the area. The Cairn explains the local history, names of pioneers and has a time capsule filled with memorabilia and predictions from local children.

descendants including Halvar Ronning, a Lutheran minister and missionary who facilitated a significant Scandinavian settlement. His son Chester, who was born in China, also lived in Valhalla Centre becoming a teacher and diplomat. Chester was an important link between China and North America, advocating recognition of the Peoples Republic of China and its admission into the United Nations. The Ronning Homestead in Valhalla became a Provincial Historic Resource in 2001.

Just a few minutes drive from Valhalla Centre and La Glace is the Spring Lake Ski Hill, which is open from January through March. Run by volunteers for over 20 years, the Spring Lake Hill is accommodating to skiers and snowboarders alike and has an excellent Beginner hill.

Make sure to stop and visit the restored Melsness Mercantile, a provincial historic site in Valhalla Centre. Originally a general store and post office, the local residents decided in 1994 to restore and save it as a local landmark. Thanks to the efforts of the Valhalla Heritage Society, the once rundown, abandoned building is now a coffee shop, serving scrumptious homemade food, a museum and a studio for local artists. Valhalla Park is a picnic area that preserves plants indigenous to the region and where 3 ft, hand-carved wooden trolls greet visitors in tribute to the area’s Scandinavian heritage.

Besides downhill skiing, there are over 10 kilometres of cross country ski trails at the facility. As well, ice fishing, snow shoeing and snowmobiling are also offered. A chalet and concession are also onsite to accommodate all visitors.

Spend even a few days exploring the County of Grande Prairie and you’ll begin to understand why we love this vast and dynamic landscape where we work and play. Located 460 km northwest of Edmonton, at the southern end of the Peace Country, the County of Grande Prairie is a study of contrasts: rich prairie, abundant rivers, creeks and small lakes, a mixed boreal forest, and the province’s northernmost badlands.

Terri Corbett - The Eagle Has Landed

You’ll see wildlife here, perhaps the majestic – and the still “threatened” – Trumpeter Swan that migrates to our lakes and sloughs in late April to nest and to raise its young, or you’ll see Canada geese snacking in fields or hear them honking as they fly overhead. If you keep a watchful eye, you’ll also spot moose, elk, mule deer, white tail deer, foxes, coyote and beaver. With a wide open sky that overlooks gently rolling prairie, Alberta’s first county has a little bit of everything within its borders. It spans the Saddle Hills in the north to the Wapiti River in the south, and stretches east from the Smoky River to the B.C. border. The county surrounds a mid-sized city and encompasses towns, a village, several hamlets, county residential communities and a First Nations reserve.

From atop the 3100 foot Saskatoon Mountain in the west county, you can view the panorama of land that inspires artists and that enamoured the homesteaders who travelled the harrowing Edson Trail just a century ago to settle here. But this rise of land is no stranger to human habitation; archeologists have found evidence of humans here dating back 9000 – 10,000 B.C. when the now fertile farmland below would have been covered by a vast glacier.

The County of Grande Prairie is becoming known internationally for its prehistoric resources. Paleontologists are busy excavating dinosaur fossils at Kleskun Hill, Pipestone Creek and the Red Willow River. They’ve recently found skeletons of duck-billed hadrosaur dinosaurs along the Red Willow River, several of which even have preserved skin impressions showing their knobby, scaly hide. This dinosaur is very unique and grew up to three tons and ten feet tall. The Pipestone Creek Bone-bed is one of the densest accumulations of dinosaur bones in the world and holds the remains of hundreds of horned dinosaurs washed onto a floodplain including the the first dinosaur named from the region, Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai, was recently featured on the Royal Canadian Mint’s first glow-in-the-dark coin. This dinosaur was found in a massive bonebed at Pipestone Creek containing thousands of bones from animals the size of a dog up to the size of a rhinoceros. During the summer, you can take an interpretive walk at Pipestone Creek to visit an active dinosaur dig and imagine what the area was like 73 million years ago when it teemed with dinosaurs, crocodiles, and turtles living in lush,

swampy forests like those of the southern US instead of the more familiar aspen and spruce that fill the creek valley today. Slated to open in September 2015, the Philip J Currie Dinosaur Museum is Canada's pre-eminent uni-disciplinary museum in the making, dedicated to the study, research, collection and display of paleo-fauna and allied narrative drawn from the rich fossil heritage in northern Alberta. The 41,000 sq.ft. museum is located on a 10 acre-site with unprecedented sight-lines. It includes a theater, labs, classrooms, restaurant, a dinoplayground and a Gift shop, in addition to nearly 11,000 sq.ft. of cutting-edge exhibit galleries. With its exposed layers of clay, sandstone and coal, the Kleskun Hill Natural Area to the east has the distinction of containing Alberta’s northernmost badlands, made up of rocks from the same age as those found in the badlands of Drumheller. Fossils of dinosaurs, lizards, fish and mammals were found in these badlands over 60 years ago, and more are found here every year. Kleskun has the most extensive and diverse native upland prairie vegetation in the Peace Region. You’ll even find prickly pear cactus here, a native plant more common to the grasslands of southern Alberta.

The community of Bezanson, located approximately 30 km east of Grande Prairie on Highway 43, has been a part of this area since the early 1900’s. In 1915, the old Bezanson town site had twenty buildings, including a hall, general store, hotel, and bakery. Enormous efforts continue to maintain the heritage and revitalize the unique treasures of this community.

Fenton Greenhouses is a family owned business that has been operating for over 25 years. They provide beautiful annuals, vegetables, flower pots, and also offer custom creations. Book a group tour to see their exquisite displays. They are open from mid-April to the end of June.

The Old Bezanson Town site has had many improvements made over the last few years. Arborists have cleaned the deadfall and others are working to reclaim the area with more defined campsites, ball diamond, walking trails, a playground, and historic building markers. A full booklet has also been published that focuses on the diverse plant life of the old Bezanson town site that features native flowers, shrubs, and trees that have not been identified anywhere else in the Peace area.

Bezanson offers a General Store that has been serving the local gas, lotto, liquor, and grocery needs since the 1950’s.

Efforts are now ongoing to repair and restore the Glen Leslie Church. It was designated a Provincial Historic Resource in 2011 by the Minister of Culture and Community Development. It is currently one of the only pre1920’s structures left in the area. It will be worth your while to stop and smell the roses and aroma’s of these long standing attractions. Bring your appetite and be ready to experience the unique creations that only “Lefty’s Café” can offer. Lefty’s “is family-oriented with a relaxed country atmosphere and prides itself on providing hearty, delicious homemade food made from local ingredients. The convenient location and friendly staff make this a natural gathering spot for families and friends to chat, dine, and experience rural Alberta’s charm.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you will not be disappointed.Take a hike through the picturesque Kleskun Hill Park or the Simonette River Provincial Recreation Area, which offers campsites with amazing scenery, day use areas, and very easy access to a large, sandy beach, perfect for swimming. Bezanson is located only minutes from the Smoky River and they host the annual Bezanson Bog Cross Country Running Race on the third weekend in September for those of you that want to test your athletic endurance. There is also an outdoor ice rink to enjoy during the winter months.

Be sure to sign our “Around the World” guest book and try the ultimate Lefty’s Burger complete with secret sauce!

The park is 20 kilometres east of the Highway 43 interchange, turn north on Township Road 724 Traveling east on the twinned Highway 43, the surrounding prime agricultural farmland produces plentiful fields of barley, canola, wheat, and oats. Fields turn bright yellow in July as the County is one of the largest growing areas of canola Canada Oil. The fields seem endless alfalfa, timothy, clover, fescue (top-notch grass) and seed forage crops providing hay for the dairy and beef farms. Game farms for elk, bison, llamas and alpacas are also gaining popularity in the region.

Going back in time, pioneers would sometimes use the white mud from the hills to chink the gaps in their log homes. A clue to early settlement also lies in the original wagon ruts from the early pioneers who traveled along the Edson Trail.Today within this natural area there are walking trails, and 9 unserviced camping sites for visitors to enjoy. The Kleskun Hill Museum Society has preserved the original East Kleskun school, teacherage, barn, outbuildings, the first area post office, and a Catholic Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Visitors may also view a native burial ground; evidence of the days of the last territorial disputes between the Beaver and Cree people.

Kleskun Hill Park is part of a provincial natural area and is managed by the County of Grande Prairie and a non-profit museum society. Once part of a prehistoric river delta, the natural area protects some of the last remaining native grassland in the Grande Prairie region. Here cactus grows in the desert-like conditions where remains of prehistoric lakes and seas are visible in the exposed hills. Kleskun Hill boasts more than 160 flowering plants, as well as a number of birds that are usually found in the prairies of the south; its soils contain fossils from the marine sea and dinosaur eras.

Town of

Named after Wembley, England,

www.wembley.ca

the Town of Wembley has traditionally served the agricultural sector. As it pays tribute to its rural nature, this neighborly community gets together to celebrate annual events that you do not want to miss. Each August, Wembley hosts Day in the Park on the Recreation Centre grounds. This event includes a parade, barbeque, family activities and more. Sunset Lake Park features a boardwalk, water spray deck, upgraded play area and campground. It is also a bird sanctuary. Wembley currently has a population of over 1500, and has amenities such as a skating rink, skateboard park, soccer, baseball and football fields.

Wembley is the gateway to the dinosaurs and has been the chosen site for the future home of the Philip J Currie Dinosaur Museum. The Pipestone Creek area, located south of the Town of Wembley, has received international attention due to the discovery of the world’s largest Pachyrhinosaurus (“thick nosed” horned dinosaur) bone bed. The Pipestone Creek site contains hundreds of dinosaur skeletons, and is one of the best horned dinosaur bone beds found in North America. The Dinosaur Museum will be a world class museum with a natural history ‘Time Walk’ surrounding the exterior of the building. A few of the attributes the building will have are a theatre for sixty persons, two state of the art classrooms, galleries and a gift shop. The Museum and the Dinosaur Bonebed will be a major tourism destination site for northwestern Alberta travellers.

During summer months, the Pipestone Creek Dinosaur Initiative will be providing tours of the Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai bone bed. Groups of 4-15 people are taken on a tour of the bone bed. The site is known as the highest density bone bed in the world.Visitors will find out why the bones are there, who found them and have answers to every question you may have.

Grande Prairie science teacher Al Lakusta discovered the Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai bone bed in 1973. Roughly 3500 bones and over 20 skulls or partial skulls have been collected from the site. The paleontological wealth in this region is very rich, most bone beds have about 20-60 fossils per square metre; the Lakustai bone bed has between 100-200 fossils. The educational tour will be filled with detailed information on the natural history of the area, erosion and paleontology. Some of the laws that exist in Alberta are touched on concerning fossil excavation.

According to the Grande Prairie Regional College paleontology program, it’s a theory that during a migration more than 70 million years ago, a herd of the thick-nosed, plant-eating pachyrhinos tried to cross a river in a flood. The animals may have panicked and similar to the mass mortality of a Quebec caribou herd in the ‘80s, the dinosaurs died in the flood. It’s theorized the carcasses were washed downriver until they settled in a final location. Once there, the bones were disarticulated, jumbled up like a puzzle. The tours will be offered on a regular basis.

Nestled in a picturesque valley is the town of Beaverlodge. With a community of over 2300 people, Beaverlodge has experienced steady growth over the past decade. The agricultural, forestry, and oil and gas sectors have all contributed to the town’s prosperity. Today, Beaverlodge is the largest town in the County and is the service and medical centre for the entire west side of the County with a full complement of doctors, a dentist, and a hospital and pharmacy as well as other health and wellness practitioners. The town boasts a new indoor pool and fitness centre, ice arena, curling rink, agricultural barns and gymkhana grounds, tennis courts, ball diamonds, and several playgrounds. Opposite the Cultural Centre and tourist information centre, visitors can view the magnificent cultural roadside attraction in the form of Canada’s national animal, the beaver. The sculpture stands 17 feet tall by 28 feet long and weighs 3000 pounds. Town of www.sexsmith.ca

In the late 1940s,

the Town of Sexsmith was known as the Grain Capital of the British Empire, shipping more grain than any other port in the Empire. To this day, the surrounding area has some of the most fertile soil, making it one of the largest grain producers in the world. Sexsmith has grown and is a friendly, progressive community with over 2500 people. The community offers excellent education, religious, recreational and cultural facilities, including a municipal campground called Heritage Park that includes a fish pond. These facilities continue to make Sexsmith a great place to live, raise a family and visit. Sexsmith is located minutes north on Highway #2 from the City of Grande Prairie; it’s a stop you don’t want to miss.

Sexsmith has transformed its downtown core to showcase the 1920s and 30s. Vintage street lighting, a gazebo, large old fashioned clock, and a livery barn create a setting that allows you to step back into another era. An important attraction is the 1916 Sexsmith Blacksmith Shop, a provincial historical site that was built in 1916. It is one of the country’s most completely equipped operating museum sites of its type in existence, and one of the best examples in Canada of an early smithy. The resident smithy will leave visitors with a smile on their face while sharing stories about the beginnings of settlement in the region. Across from the blacksmith shop is the Paszkowski Farm House (1911) which has been restored to the original condition. The very active Museum Society is working to rebuild the old lumber yard that was destroyed by fire in 2009. To replace the 1916 Roman Catholic Church that also burned, they have purchased the beautiful Anglican Church, built in 1936. There is also discussion on trying to save an elevator, which would preserve our unique skyline.

Further expanding on the old time theme is the old Sexsmith Railway Station and caboose, built in 1928; it is one of the focal points of the downtown and also a provincial historical site. Each year the Town of Sexsmith holds many annual events including Chautauqua Days in June. This event has been held for over 75 years, and is an old fashioned community celebration inspired by the traveling entertainers who first came to the prairies. It’s a great time to visit and exchange stories.

Grande Prairie region will now see the unveiling of a world class new museum in September 2015. Named after Canada’s leading Palaeontologist Dr. Philip Currieone of the foremost professional voices around the globe, the new museum honours his lifelong commitment to the discovery and study of palaeo-heritage.

GRANDE PRAIRIE & REGION 2015 VISITOR GUIDE

Fossils were first found in northwest Alberta – close to the Town of Wembley – in 1974. Before that point, palaeontologists believed there were no dinosaur remains in the region. However, a young school teacher by the name of Al Lakusta stumbled on something strange when out on a nature walk one day at Pipestone Creek. Eventually, his findings were identified as bones of a yet to be discovered species Pachyrhinosaurus – a type of horned dinosaur- subsequently re-christened as the Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai, in honour of Al.

458354 GP TOURISM 2015-jan14 15-01-15 12:27 PM Page 95

In the meantime, palaeontologists from the Royal Tyrrell Museum, including Dr. Currie, had started travelling to the area to excavate these intriguing fossils. They examined the area scoped by Al and soon realized that there were thousands of bones in one place. The bone-bed as large as several football fields was in fact a mass grave site where hundreds of dinosaurs of all ages died at once and washed up in a flood. It was one of the densest dinosaur sites in the world. That was a big discovery. That is what started it all. The palaeontologists were intrigued by the area and through their excavations, started to find bones from other dinosaurs, including teeth and footprints. Remains have been found from animals like Hadrosaur, Tyrannosaur, Nodosaur, Plesiosaur and Pterosaur, to name a few. The Red Willow River has yielded one of the most important Hadrosaur skeletons known to science. Palaeontologists have even found fascinating skin impressions – fossilized imprints of dinosaurs’ scaly hide. As the discoveries continued, the scientists realized how much more potential there was to find even more. The idea started to percolate. Why not create a facility, one that could preserve and

protect these incredible fossils, a place where people could come to learn more about them? Such priceless resources should be protected, preserved and not only that – celebrated! The plan was a good one – it would open up the world of science based on the incredible resources in our own backyard and it was something people would be excited about. It was also something that would have a significant positive impact on the Peace Region in enhancing the economy and putting the area on the global tourism map. Work began in 2004 by a group of palaeontologists and palaeo-enthusiasts called the Palaeontological Society of the Peace. Then in 2009 the County of Grande Prairie created a full-time museum task force called the Pipestone Creek Dinosaur Initiative. With the completion of construction work of the architecturally stunning 42,000 square feet facility on a 10 acre site, the museum is in advanced stages of exhibit design and production. Over 7,000 students and close to 9,000 members of the public have already participated in one of the education programs created for the museum. The programs include a K-12 curriculum-connected

program and a public program at Pipestone Creek Park, offering exciting activities on the Peace Region’s prehistoric past. The facility itself will include Dinosaur exhibit galleries with skeletal reconstructions, an Interactive Dig Wall, a recreated Bonebed, a Time Spiral Staircase, an Oil and Gas Discovery Wall, two simulated prehistoric ecosystems, a Discovery Tent, Palaeontology Lab and much more, including the Aykroyd Family Theatre, two SMART-technology classrooms, a gift shop and a restaurant. Sections of the facility will be available to rent for special occasions and events.
