very since I can remember this has been my song… prayer… daily devotion. There is so much power & truth in these words… no explanation needed.

Dear Father, I need you, Your strength my heart to mend. I want to fly higher, Every new day again. Man versus himself. Man versus machine. Man versus the world. Mankind versus me. The struggles go on, The wisdom I lack, The burdens keep pilling Up on my back. So hard to breathe, To take the next step. The mountain is high, I wait in the depths. Yearning for grace, And hoping for peace. Dear God... Increase. Healing hands of God have mercy on our unclean souls once again. Jesus Christ, light of the world burning bright within our hearts Forever. Freedom means love without condition, without a beginning or an end. Here's my heart, let it be forever Yours, Only You can make every new day seem so new.

the CAUSE

say “I do” to your

professional passion By DFS Blog

Sylvia Weinstock knows a thing or two about marriage. Celebrating her 64th wedding anniversary last February, Sylvia said “I do” to her husband Ben back in 1949, when women were expected to do little more than cook, clean, and care for their families. But, Sylvia wasn’t ready to settle down just yet. After marrying the love of her life, Sylvia decided to marry her life’s passion and profession to create the world famous Sylvia Weinstock Cakes. Over scrumptious desserts and flavorful fillings, Sylvia Weinstock sat down with us to give us the inside scoop on how she went from a kindergarten teacher to celebrity cake connoisseur. Grab a piece of paper and find your favorite pen because you’ll want to take notes on this one!!! Starting your own business is no piece of cake, but if there is one thing we can learn from Sylvia, its that taking chances, finding the right resources, and getting creative can transform our innermost ambitions into fulfilling and flourishing careers.

the CAUSE Growing up in the 1930’s, Sylvia was taught from an early age that she had to fight for her rights as woman. For Sylvia, that meant creating a home she could take pride in as a homemaker and a breadwinner. “Being a housewife was just not enough. I wanted to be more. In those days, your choices were nursing, secretary work, or teaching. I became a teacher.” Still, Sylvia’s appetite for success was far from satisfied sitting in her kindergarten classroom. Ironically, she had to go back to the kitchen to find true independence. “I loved to bake, and I thought if I started a business with a specialized-to-order cake, I could run my own life.” In 1979, Sylvia embarked on an adventure to self-sufficiency, taking the first step in creating her own company: understanding the business. Just like her homemade recipes, Sylvia started from scratch, setting out to learn all that she could about the baking industry. But even with a little Saturday Night Fever, America wasn’t ready for the heat of a trailblazer like Sylvia Weinstock.

the CAUSE “I was considered a joke, because at that time the pastry department was run by men. So for a woman to come in, it was the biggest joke in the world. They couldn’t quite understand it. I asked a pastry chef that I knew whether I could come in and observe and he said, ‘sure, but you’re never going to get any place with it.’” But Sylvia wasn’t about to let the doubts of one man discourage her from following her dreams. Like all selfmade businesswomen, Sylvia took a chance on the greatest investment of all—herself. She defined success on her own terms, and encourages other women to do the same: “You have to be adventurous and you have to motivate yourself. Nobody is going to do it for you.” So, how did Sylvia turn her favorite kitchen past-time into a thriving business? She rallied her resources and rolled up her sleeves the old-fashioned way, knocking on doors, calling up business owners, and refusing to take no for an answer. Sylvia created her own opportunities, starting her business from the ground up.

First, she started with the basics, talking to anyone who might be interested in buying her one-of-a-kind cake creations. Eventually, Sylvia struck gold. “I found these little country inns in upstate New York that would buy my desserts, so I started baking all kinds of wonderful things and I sold them to about five little restaurants.” Sylvia’s extravagant desserts soon caught the eyes, and taste buds, of the New York social elite who wined and dined there, winning Sylvia her first high-profile client. “A number of women thought my cake was unique, different, and delicious. One of them ordered a cake and it went to the Carlyle Hotel, and the Carlyle became my first client. As soon as they saw it, they wanted it.” Sylvia knew she was onto something special, readying her rolling pin to make the most of her big break. Quickly realizing the power of a great first impression, she decided to make a lasting one on the luxurious Upper East Side hotel. Nonstop networking and a shining personality helped Sylvia make friends in all the right places. She’s living proof that you don’t need big bucks to get your name out there, and sometimes the word of mouth is the best way to go.

the CAUSE “The banquet manager ordered a cake, then three cakes, and the word got out that the Carlyle had something new, beautiful, different, and delicious. Soon, the other hotels called. The Pierre called, The Plaza called, and the Metropolitan Club, and I was off and running. Before I knew it, we were in demand and the business started to grow.” With the cake business booming, Sylvia Weinstock Cakes soon became too much for one woman to handle. That’s when Sylvia built her dream team. Today, these baking buffs and culinary experts are what keep her going– because every power woman needs a strong support system. “It’s the team that makes it happen, because nobody can do this alone. Every area is important. Whether it’s from the baking to the filling, from the icing to the design, or from the boxing to the delivery, every step of the way is critical.”

And, the Sylvia Weinstock team isn’t afraid to recognize a job well done. Gone are the days of the bashful damsel in distress! Now, women are leading their lives and their careers and taking credit for all the hard work it takes to get there. Sylvia’s no different: “We sign our artwork. Picasso signed his, and we can sign ours. I think that you should take the credit for it if you do something fantastic.” A leap of faith, creative vision, and smart strategy led Sylvia Weinstock to the ultimate success, and now her inspiring story and business savvy advice are standing the test of time for women everywhere aspiring to marry their passion and profession.

Consider these three tips from Sylvia the icing on the cake: 1. Take an inventory of your skills. Sit down and figure out what you can do, and then go for it! 2. See where there’s a need for your talents. Talk to people who would benefit from working with you. You have a lot to offer, so make sure they know it! 3. Pull in whatever help you can get. Court the people that would give you business by writing a letter or following up with a visit, phone call, or luncheon appointment.

the WORD Â

In dependence Day By Mona Ward

Every year on the 4th of July as most people are celebrating Independence Day, I am reminded of my own experience with In-dependence. On July 4, 1995 I was a homeless Crystal Meth addict. I had lived the last several years hopelessly addicted and miserable. This particular day was the beginning of the end for me, though I did not know it at the time. I was sitting in the rain, during a monsoon in our small town trying to find a way to stay dry, and get high. I walked the streets knocking on doors and begging people to let me in. Even my oldest friends had had enough of me. No one would answer their doors. I was left out in the rain with one shoe, a ragged old dress, and no absolutely no hope of shelter. As the fireworks began , our entire community was gathered at the towns baseball field. People were laughing, and children were playing, and I thought of my own children, up at their grandmas waiting for me to come see fireworks with them. No doubt they were looking out the windows and watching for me to come walking up the street, like I said I would. I had no intention of going there. I could not stand the humiliation. I could not look in their pleading eyes again. I came upon the house of a woman I knew , who told me I could not come in, but I could lay in the back of an old broken down truck she had in her backyard, which I did.

the WORD When I came to, I saw my reflec9on in the trucks mirror, and was shocked. I began to cry out to a God I did not know and ask Him to help me. I had a moment of clarity , in which I heard Gods voice speak to me for the first 9me. He said “Choose. Choose to live, or choose to die.” I crawled out of that truck, broke into a rela9ves home, and called my sister. I told her “ I need help, I think I am dying… and I don’t want to die.” That is the day my life began again. I found my God. That was 18 years ago, and by the Grace of a loving, forgiving, God I have never looked back. Today, the void that I tried to fill with drugs has been filled with a spiritual love I never knew existed. I have found my home in Christ. I have shelter from the storm in in His love. While the fireworks go off on the 4th of July, this year, every year, I am so grateful that I have found the meaning of Independence. Today , I am full “ In-‐Dependence” of God, who never lost sight of me.

the GUIDE

SUN SAFE

By Michelle Pino

If you’re like most people, summer means a lot of time soaking up the vitamin D. But sun exposure can be risky and damaging to your skin. Protecting yourself by wearing sunscreen every day, even when it’s cloudy, is essential. That said, the chemicals in sunscreen could be harmful to your skin, causing allergic reactions and hormone disturbances. According to EWG.org, one of the most problematic of the sunscreen chemicals used in the U.S. is oxybenzone, found in 80 percent of chemical sunscreens*. So how do you get the protection you need without the harmful ingredients? Fortunately, there are many common oils that can provide chemical free, natural sunscreen protection. Red raspberry seed oil (SPF28-50), carrot seed oil (SPF38-40), wheat germ oil (SPF20), soybean oil (SPF10), macadamia oil (SPF6), and jojoba oil (SPF4) have relatively high SPF without the harmful chemicals. Other oils, such as coconut oil, olive oil, sesame oil, hempseed oil, and shea butter, offer low SPF protection but are still valuable additions in your homemade sunscreen, as they are moisturizing and fragrant**.

the GUIDE From the Skana Spa experts of New York resort, Turning Stone, here’s a natural DIY sunscreen you can whisk up at home: 1 ounce red raspberry seed oil 1 ounce coconut oil 1 ounce beeswax 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional) Place a glass bowl on top of a saucepan of boiling water to make your own double boiler. Put all ingredients in the glass bowl and melt together. Allow mixture to cool before applying. Store in a cool, dry place or in the fridge. This recipe is beneficial because the ingredients are so nourishing, yet protective. Red raspberry seed oil is known for providing essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and natural vitamin E, besides having a high SPF. Coconut oil has a lower SPF than the red raspberry, but also contains moisturizing and antioxidant properties. Beeswax will help nourish skin in general, but it will also give your natural sunscreen the right consistency. Lastly, the essential oils can add wonderful fragrance to your product, and depending on which one you use, can also add healing properties. For instance, lavender is a natural stress reliever and wound healer.

Make sure you re-apply sunscreen after a few hours of sun exposure or after you get out of the water. So go ahead, enjoy the outdoors. Just don’t forget to protect your largest asset, your skin, with a natural, chemical free sunscreen. Your skin will thank you for it. *Calafat 2008, Rodriguez 2006, Krause 2012. the WORD

comfortable

risk…

By Jen Ko

This Zara jersey blazer is one of my favorite things in my closet that hardly ever gets worn. It’s as comfortable as a cardigan, but I get a little scared wearing it. For one thing, it’s white, and I love food with tomato sauce. So wearing it out to dinner is a big risk. But blazers also aren’t really my personality. I always feel more polished wearing them, but as much as I enjoy playing that persona for a few hours, inside I feel like a fraud. It’s as if I imagine people are secretly pointing fingers at me, whispering, “She’s really a sweatshirt and jeans type gal.” Guilty. Totally guilty. Not that taking risks or trying new things is a bad thing. In fact it can help you figure out who you really are, what you really want, what you really need. For instance, I did something crazy this week. Ok, maybe not crazy, but something pretty out of the box for me. I stayed in a monastery. With monks. No, I have not given up on my marriage to become a nun. But my life has been falling apart in ways that it never has before, and I didn’t know what else to do but to take a risk and do something that was completely out of my comfort zone. So when a friend asked me to join her at a monastery for a few days, I agreed. At the monastery there was a no music, no talking policy. People occasionally whispered anyway, but for the most part it was a silent place. Silent except for the deafening roar of your troubled thoughts. Which forced you to confront them. Did I walk away with enlightenment, or at least some answers? Not really. But I did find comfort, which is something I haven’t found in a very long while. And I don’t mean the kind of comfort you get from eating a pint of ice cream while watching reruns of Friends. It was the kind of comfort that came in a form of a whisper, that my burdens would be carried for me, as long as I could learn to let go and believe. I found comfort while taking a risk. But more importantly, I found another piece of myself.

the WORD Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. - psalm 37:4 Deep inside of you there is a well. A deep well filled with dreams, visions, and ideas. Thoughts of who you are, of what you will become, of what you have dreamt about your entire life; aching to come out and to be heard. Today, I can promise you that if you listen to those things, they will become you… because they are you. They are the essence of what you were born to do, who you were born to be. So today I ask that you listen and believe. That still small voice inside of you whispering. He is your Savior and it is called your destiny. Today you can find it, because He created you. DREAMBOARD

Putting together a dream board is a way to keep the vision alive and in front of you. There are a few types of dream boards that you can do. One is through collecting things that touch your heart. It’s filled with quotes, tear sheets, and photos that inspire you. Little trinkets and mementos that are meaningful to your heart can also take place here. The second is a more literal visual board. This style can also have inspirational quotes but the majority of it should be filled with literal images of what you desire for your life. This could be a particular house, a certain career, a type of relationship, places you would like to travel, anything really in your heart that you would like to see attained. Not in a materialistic way, but rather from a place of real depth speaking out what’s filling your heart.

the WORD What it means to love yourself..

By Melody Hawks

Have you ever thought of loving yourself and what it means? I have. It's not a great thought. When I think of someone loving themselves, I think of some perky high school girl putting on lip-gloss in the mirror then turning to me and saying "they love me" and then Little Miss Lipgloss skips away to whatever perky place she is going. It brings me thoughts of narcissism and conceit an abundance of entitlement and a somewhat pushy personality. If that's what self love is...I don't know that I want any part of it. I think however, that maybe I am wrong in my initial outlook. Because loving ourselves is something that we are expected to do. It's mentioned in scripture more than once. So what does loving myself look like? What comes to my mind is in Matthew 22 when Jesus explains how one keeps the law the statement love your neighbor as your self is stated. Loving someone else is easy but how do we love our selves without being little Miss Lip-gloss? I think first we have to realize its ok to love ourselves right here we are, even if there are things about us that we need to change. Breaking down 1 Corinthians 13 might help.

the WORD Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. If I’m going to love someone, I have to be patient with them. That means me too. What I’m saying is I have to be patient with myself give myself time to learn or understand or accomplish what it is I want to do. I can’t envy who I once was, looking back at "who we once were" can either stunt your growth forward if you lament or envy that you aren't that person any more. Or, you can look back and let that motivate you into getting back into that same space. Be careful though. You can never go back to exactly where you were. You have today, and the future. these are the only thing you have a say so in. The past is never, never going to change. Boasting and pride are some of the hallmarks of insecurity. When you are full of those attributes you are seeking human affirmation rather than God's approval. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

patient

love is

We know not to put other's down. Part of Loving yourself is being ok with who you are. When we put ourselves down whether it's in public or in the privacy of our own minds. It makes it harder to love ourselves. Its mind poison. guard your mind! Don't sit and continually think of ways to promote yourself, seeking public affirmation will do little for what you think about yourself. Instead, seek God's approval in how you live and what you do. Affirm yourself by looking at what scripture says. Don't let things tick you off. When you make a mistake don't say "I'm stupid" Or "I'm never going to learn" give yourself a break!

the WORD Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Don't strive to make yourself a vic9m of a circumstance or situa9on, but rather find how you can become victorious over it. Truth is something concrete that you can deal with, evil is abstract and vague and always trying to get around doing what is right. Right and Truth are not subjec9ve. Not if your authority is Scripture. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Protect yourself and your self-‐image. As you grow in Christ, trust your decisions and take a few chances, Always hope. Hope is a seed and faith springs out of it. Look for the best in yourself, find a lidle good and don't let the nega9ve self thoughts get a foot hold on your thinking.

love iskind

Don’t look back either. Keep on pushing yourself to do good. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child; I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. Another way to put it is "Love never dies". Once we allow our mind to go to a place where we can love ourselves appropriately, it's not difficult for it to stay there. Inspired speech and prayer in tongues will stop and there will be a limit to our understanding. Right now on this side of eternity, we only know part of the story but in time that part will be seamlessly joined with what we don't yet know of God and His Kingdom. We will no longer look at things in such a childish way, but rather in a more complete adult fashion. On earth, we only see what human eyes can see, like in a mirror but when God makes things clear for us in eternity we will understand everything from God's perspective and we will be able to see the good parts of ourselves that our sinful, human-ness hides and we will understand that loving ourselves is just as important as loving others. Because we will see the full "US"

the WORD And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. That's right, Love. Love yourself. Others will see that love and they will want to know what you have that they don't. That love begins with knowing Christ. Scripture tells us that God is love. It also tells us that no one gets to God except through Christ. Inviting Christ into your heart is the first step to being able to truly love yourself. Once you have invited Christ into your heart, the bible says that you are a new creation. I saw a Facebook post of all things, which explains that new-ness better than I could. It said, "You have a new nature, a new DNA of sorts. It's His (Christ's) divine nature in you when you first believed in Jesus. You no longer are limited by the old nature and all of its weaknesses, but you are limitless in your new DNA, (Divine Nature Applied). Our nature has been transformed, instead of choosing the forbidden apple; we become the apple that doesn't fall far from the tree. We must be diligent to apply this new nature, which is a great and precious promise that we experience now and in eternity. So be diligent, by faith to live morally excellent, with knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness, and love. The qualities will cause you to be useful and fruitful in the true knowledge of Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:2-11” (Brent Wagner, Pastor of Voyage Calvary Chapel)

If you are already a Christian, maybe you just need to remember who you are. You are the one He loves, the apple of His eye and that nature that has been transformed in you is waiting to be displayed. If you think you've lost your way, that's alright. You don't have to find your way back to a "better place". Just ask God to meet you where you are and to lead you to where He wants you to be. Not only will he meet you, but with prayer and reading of His word, He will help YOU love YOU the right way. Go ahead…Love yourself !
