Grace Notes Grace Cathedral winter 2016
E X P ER I E N CE W O R S H I P, ED U CAT I O N , S ER V I CE A N D THE ART S at San Francisco’s Cathedral for All
Dean’s Message Dear Friends, At this time of new beginnings and resolution, it is a blessing to greet you in Grace Notes, our seasonal publication for worship, education, service and the arts. As you may know, the cathedral picks an annual theme for the year, and I hope you will share my excitement about this year’s theme, which is “Home.” Some of you have heard me say that our reasoning, logical mind is only a tiny part of who we are. What a place looks and feels like speaks to a deep part within us, and this is especially true of the place or places we call home. A positive experience of home can give rise to thoughts, dreams and experiences that would otherwise be impossible. It helps us welcome others into our lives. You will notice our “Home” theme in the events and programs described over the following pages. The winter season of our conversation series, The Forum, will feature some fascinating people who have national or global reputations but call the Bay Area home. The Interfaith Celebration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 17 focuses on King’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, “The Reality of the Dream,” in which he avowed his “abiding faith in America,” the homeland for many of us. On January 23, we have our second Grace Gives event, a day of volunteer service to make our city a better place to call home. Thanks to you, our first Grace Gives day of service in September 2015 was a great success. In February, at Carnivale, the annual gala to benefit Grace Cathedral, the guest artist will be Aaron Neville. Neville has a powerful connection to his home in New Orleans. After that city was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, he helped to make it a home again. Soon after Carnivale, we begin the solemn season of Lent, which gives us the chance to reflect on how we can be more at home with God. Then, we will celebrate the joy of Easter. We hope that Grace Cathedral will be your home whether you come here to worship, attend a concert, practice yoga or simply enjoy its quiet and beauty. Love, The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young Dean of Grace Cathedral
