SITE: INNER MONGOLIA, CHINA PROGRAM: MUSEUM OF TIBETAN BUDDISM Mochlog means “cycle” in mogolian. In Tibetan Buddism, people go ground buildings and mountains to pray and worship. The journey, as part of their religious, formed the main form and circulation of the museum.

The form of the building looks like a large pipe, with all the different space and programs formed by changing of the section of the pipe, such as the corridor, second floor and restaurant. It also created outdoor space in the center, as a courtyard for outdoor exhibition.

The Carousel Parking SITE: LACMA, LOS ANGELES, CA CAPACITY: 510 CARS PROGRAM: PARKING AND RESIDENTIAL Located in the site of an art museum, the parking structure is designed as an art work exhibited in LACMA, like a modern sculpture. When people use it, it seems that they are taking part in a performance art.

The Steel House SITE: VENICE, LOS ANGELES, CA PROGRAM: RESIDENTIAL

Formed by steel frames and panels, the house is located in residential area of Venice, LA. There are two extremely different elevations: one is totally opaque while the other one is transparent. The contrast creates different views from the living room, the bedrooms and the courtyard between the two parts of the building.

The site, which is near the noisy street, is limited by the flyover above it. However, the flyover also provides shadow for the space under it, as a natural roof of the three layer in this public building. On the other hand, the building also makes the space under the flyover useable and “alive“. The building is designed not only a sports or arts centre for people who will enter, but also a public area for all the citizens, like a three-layer square. F

Adaptive Revolving Canopy System This project is located in Yoyogi Park. As the Handball site of Tokyo Olympic, Yoyogi national gymnasium has a capacity of ten thousand people. It is also a popular venue for performance and concerts. The open area around the gymnasium is always crowded during the game day. A lot of people have to waiting in line, tolerating the hot weather in summer, or heavy wind and rain during the rainy season, since there is no of benches, shelters or food booth. My approach is named as “arcs”, in short of “adaptive revolving canopy system”. It could readily and adaptively create shaped to cope with the weather, as well as a temporary structure during disaster like earthquake. The layout of the project could be adjusted according to different programs and requirements. It could create longer, continuous space for exhibition, or large vault for performance. Or smaller indoor space for shops and restaurants. It could fit well in the site of yoyogi, which is not in a regular shape, to use the public space efficiently.

Circumscribed Void MONOLITHIC ARCHITECTURE In general, monolithic architecture treat the monolith as a skin creating a space inside it. However, since the skin has two sides, it forms two space simultouneously: the space inside the skin and the space outside it. The two space has similar characteristics since they are formed and attached by he same boundary. The outside space, which supposed to be unlimited and comparatively difficult to perceive and utilize. My approach is to use a cube container to circumscribe the outside space and make it as a contrast space with the inside one in the same building. With the cube, both spaces are utilized in a resvesed way. The inside space, which supposed to be more private, is the most public space in this building. As a large hollow part of the cube, it provides large semiopen space for gathering and public exhibition. It is connected to all sides of the cube, providing light and ventilation. People can walk through it from one side of the buidling to another side. It is also the location of the theater and an exhibition zone for tall scuptures and paintings. And the outside space, with the cubic boundary, turns to be the mian exhibition area composed of smaller rooms. Other supporting space, like th office, storage and circulation is also located in this area. The skin and the cube container are connected as a continuous surface which created the whole building. The pattern flowing on the surface indicates there are no break or difference between them. It also creates similar views for the facades.

Slab House The purpose to create such a Tectonic building is to use the simple rules to build complex space. The basic module of this building is the U-shape unit. By rotating, repeating and scaling, some new modules are producted. Changing of the size, porprotion and position of the new units will also cause a seires of varieties.

VARIETIES OF MATERIALS: 1. Pure wood 2. White cardboard with black inside 3. Black cardboard and transparent plastics 4. Plastics with different level of transparency 5. Wooden panels with green inside, mesh

Parametric Tree ORNAMENTS AND PATTERNS Phase I: shape of a tree branch The shape of tree branches has been computed using the theory of flexure of beams. Numerical computation is used and takes into account large displacements and growth. The coupling between elastic bending and growth results in a branch shape having an inflection point connected with a permanent deformation.

Phase II: abstraction

According to the basic principles of the tree branch, we generated a parametric tree. In this tree, each branch connected with two more branches on the top point. Since in each level the branches are rotated in a fixed angle, the tree looks like a 2D element.

FABRICATION The 3D tree is formed by the interlocking joint, there were four elements, which repesent deferent branches generation and with interlocking the each generation branches from small to large one, we can have a 3D branches, and repeating this steps, we can get a large tree which shown already in the presentation, this method are easy to combine and no need any glue, you can see from each photo on the right to see the competion work, which is the sphere parametric tree.

Pattern on top As the different parameter affecting the forming of the trees, from the top we can see the different pattern which generate by those parameter, from the right figure, you can see that the different angle and thichness of the tree resulting the different and beautiful pattern, it also can see the chacrater of equilibrium, becasue it is the isometric view from the top, it can distinguish the thickess and length of branches is changing from thick to thin.

The Wall

The ribs which under the imaginary pressure from the roof, will distort to a curved shape and create lateral force to the battens that attached on it. When the force increases, the distortion of the rib become larger. The battens started to overlap on each other especially in the middle and finally, separate to two parts and create an opening between them.
