objective

_ PHI L HAM L ETT

Visual Communications is about conscious communications. This project examined the larger role that graphic design plays in society and equips designers to become participants in the world at large. To paraphrase Bruce Mau, this course is less concerned with the world of design, and more concerned with the design of the world. As a designer and communicator, I was asked to consider my own role in society, examine my value systems, and develop distinctive voices. The project focused on storytelling, collaboration and authorship.

I told a story of the close to death experience that my mom had after taking herbal supplements that claimed to be natural and safe. I realized that my mom was not alone in being a victim to the unregulated herbal supplements and that through graphic design I could tell her story. I was determined to help educate people about these potentially harmful products through storytelling and statistics. Through visual communications I helped educate people about the facts, as well unveil the myths that they might have about herbal supplements. Through the project I was able to discover the idea and concept for my thesis: educating people to stop and think about what they are actually putting in their bodies, eat more of the right foods and swallow less manufactured pills to stay healthy. p r o j e c t _ UNREGU L ATED

Appealing to today’s savvy observer, the project moves beyond the creation of a simple identity system to discover the nuances in the creation of a holistic brand. I explored various methods of research to discover the audience, mood and reason for existence of my selected brand through industry-standard techniques. I was able to bring the chosen brand to life through the creation of a collection of integrated brand extensions.

Since 1889, McCormick has been a pioneer of teas, syrups, fruit, juices and most of all, flavoring extracts such as herbs and spices. They are the reason for many great family dishes and memories. McCormick’s selling approach needed to change to a new concept. Instead of selling spices and herbs as something to make your food taste good, the solution was to sell the products as something that would make you a healthier person. The key focus was to promote a healthy active lifestyle for families and individuals. A clean, to the point direction helped the brand take on a fresh new start.

Set in 1960’s New York, the sexy, stylized and provocative AMC drama Mad Men follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising, an ego-driven world where key players make an art of the sell. The choice of using bold colors and silhouettes was to help men imagine themselves as one of the characters. Mad Men yourself and own your life.

Design Outside the Box, is about conceptual thinking without fear. We live in a world surrounded by issues and problems where graphic design has a great influence on what we know. The goal was to find a reoccurring problem and try to develop a visual graphic solution for a new product line correlated with an existing brand. I selected a company that could expand into a market that the company had never stepped into before, thus reaching a new audience.

Keywords integrated with my own photography were used to introduce IKEA wireless electricity. Millions of fires are caused every year due to electrical wiring or people plugging many devices into outlets. What if our furniture had electrical capabilities so that we could charge our phone or power a blender? The solution would be to have the ability to supply our electronics with electricity by simply placing it on a table or counter. This is a conceptual project with the idea of IKEA selling furniture that replaces traditional sources of electricity. An idea like this would put an end to fires and electrical cords making them extinct, scrap and remnants.

For this project I worked to integrate a word and an image that were given to me at random. The project grappled on how to create a book using the word and the image in combination. With all the constraints that the project had, I was allowed to use any structure as long as the word appeared at least once and contained the given image.

Doorbell and spider seemed to work best in a poetic context. So, the solution for the project was to edit a poem integrating the concept doorbell and image of a spider. By creating a poetic story about a hungry spider who invited his friend over for dinner, gave it a fun, eerie, feeling as you read through it. The use of frayed red string gave a web-like feel, stringing the pages together like a spider would. It gave a sense that the spider was crawling through the pages as a reader flipped through the book.

objective

Through the thorough examination of different typefaces, I explored the typographic form of Minion. The typeface Minion is the name of a typeface designed by Robert Slimbach in 1990 for Adobe Systems. The name comes from the traditional naming system for type sizes and it is inspired by the late Renaissance-era typography. solution

Minion was used for this project because it is slightly condensed with pronounced contrast, and it is an effective text face. The typeface ensures readability, as well as it reflects its tone, its structure, and its cultural context. The original copies are of type specimen sheets from known graphic designer and typographer Wolfgang Weingart and Emil Ruder. Through the experimental pages, the use of scale and flow shows how minion combines character and functionality.

She is not alone, millions of people look for alternative ways of improving their health issues or simply just want to be healthier.
