T
he 2015-2016 academic year was, unquestionably, the most challenging of my seven years as a Graded Board member. However, as a community, we not only addressed shortterm financial and personnel hurdles, but continued to ensure Graded’s next 100 years by continuing the execution of our Centennial Campaign. As Rich Boerner was settling in as Graded’s new superintendent, the Brazilian economy began facing extreme volatility, with the exchange rate approaching the R$ 4.20 mark. As you can imagine, the financial climate made maintaining and recruiting strong teachers a challenge. Fortunately, with the phenomenal job of our Leadership Team and the support of our community and Board of Directors, Graded was able to secure a group of teachers for the 2016-2017 academic year who deliver the quality of education to which we have grown accustomed. Our Excellence in Teaching Initiative, once again, proved its value, assisting the school with its recruiting, development, and retention efforts. The 2015-2016 school year was also a landmark year for our Graded Scholar Program. We enrolled two additional Graded Scholars, who receive full scholarships to Graded based upon their unique talents and merit. These scholarships are funded primarily by our endowment, which means that we will have at least nine Graded Scholars in perpetuity. We continue working with our donor community, so that we can meet our goal of 28 Graded Scholars.
At the beginning of the academic year, we also launched the construction of our second phase of the Graded Campus Project – the new student center, parking garage, fields, and wellness gymnasium. Many of you might wonder why we decided to start with the garage. The Prefeitura gave us the license for our campus construction, contingent upon building the garage to reduce traffic in the neighborhood. This new parking facility will also significantly improve the security of our students and parents during pick-up and drop-off. We are on track to inaugurate our new facilities and are finalizing the financial planning to initiate Phase III of the Campus Project, the Athletics Center. Concurrently, we are undergoing an Academic Infrastructure Improvement Project to modernize our classrooms.
Roberto Sallouti ‘90 President of the Board
Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank John Gregg, who left Graded’s Board of Directors at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year and to welcome Caroline Lima and Gustavo Junqueira, who will join the 2016-2017 Board. Once again, we thank you all for your support. Without our Graded Annual Fund and Centennial Campaign donors, nothing that Graded has accomplished in the last few years would have been possible. We count on your continued support, so that our goal of making Graded the benchmark institution within the international school community becomes a reality. Abraços, Roberto Sallouti ‘90 President of the Board

Message from the Superintendent 6
The 2015-2016 school year marked the 95th anniversary at Graded and my first as superintendent.
ability to ensure highly effective reading and writing strategies for our youngest learners.
Despite a turbulent Brazilian financial climate, Graded was able to overcome significant economic challenges. With a supportive parent community, Graded retained and attracted some of the best teachers in international education. We are thrilled with the depth and quality of our new faculty who guide, support, and inspire our students each day.
On the infrastructure front, we broke ground on Phase II of our Campus Project. This massive undertaking, which includes a new student center, parking lot, athletic fields, and small wellness gymnasium, is a breathtaking improvement for our campus and one that rivals facilities at top international schools. Notably, the project was completed both on time and on budget. We are excited for its opening and to embark upon Phase III, The Athletics Center.
During the past year, we have made tremendous progress in positively impacting Graded’s learning environment. Faculty professional development has played a critical role in this initiative. In the Middle and High Schools, we focused on improving assessment for learning. Twentythree Upper School teachers spent a week at the Assessment Training Institute, developing their knowledge of evaluation and feedback for students. Upon their return to Graded, these educators imparted their knowledge to other Graded faculty. In the Lower School, Columbia University’s Teachers College trained our faculty for the second straight year, enhancing their

The Board stewards the school’s financial resources to provide for current needs, while at the same time protecting and enhancing the endowment for the benefit of the institution’s future. The Board is also responsible for hiring and evaluating the superintendent.

LUIZ CLÁUDIO GALEAZZI ‘81 Treasurer
2015-2016 year was a tremendously challenging one for Brazil and, consequently, for our Graded School community. As predicted, Graded completed this year with a loss of R$ 2,254,139.00, as a consequence of its negative operational result (-R$ 6,324,908.00). The result was better than that which was forecast, and it clearly reflects the school’s success in hiring and retaining topnotch foreign faculty and surmounting other operational hurdles. The challenges will continue this year, but the Board has been working jointly with the school’s Leadership Team to guarantee that Graded continues to be a premier international American school, competitive in the global education market and with the very best educators. The Finance Committee has also been working jointly with auditors and advisors in different fronts to continue to improve Graded’s financial accounting/legal reports and governance. The operating reserves increased by 31%, closing the year at R$ 44,849,018.00 in cash. The capital reserves closed at R$ 20 million, but will be entirely consumed in the next months to complete the Graded Campus Project - Phase II, which is on schedule and will be finished by December 2016.
10
With new Centennial Campaign gifts this past year, our combined endowments ended with the highest year-end balance in the school’s history at R$ 18,705,686.00, with a yearly return of 16.2%. We continue to enhance our campus, and the Board has approved the execution of the Academic Infrastructure Improvement Project, which includes air conditioning for all classrooms, new flooring for the hallways, lab remodeling, and lighting. I would like to thank my colleagues, members of the Board and Finance Committee, for their expertise, advice, and support throughout this year. As an alumnus, current parent, and Board member, I am extremely proud to be part of this unique community, and I look forward to another exciting year ahead. Thank you very much for your support and dedication. Abraços, Luiz Cláudio Galeazzi ‘81 Treasurer

Graded timeline
On the morning of October 17, 1920, Mrs. Ruth Kolb and Ms. Bel Ribble took attendance of six students. Enrollment increased to 35 the next year. In 1921, the school was officially established as the São Paulo Graded School – SPGS.
It was followed by an additional site for elementary students at Rua Itambé.
The Brazilian industrial boom of the 1950s created pressure for an even bigger school. Large fundraising campaigns were held for the construction of a new campus. Finally, in August 1961 Graded moved to Avenida Giovanni Gronchi which, at that time, was considered rural and “sitting on a hilltop with forests and pastures and rock quarries all around.”

Shortly after World War I, the American Chamber of Commerce and American companies in São Paulo envisioned a school that would prepare children for colleges and universities in the United States. It started in a tworoom schoolhouse on Avenida São João, in the heart of downtown São Paulo.
A larger building was quickly constructed with Chamber of Commerce funds on Mackenzie College land at Rua Piauí 36.
As the school continued to grow, the American Chamber of Commerce began a campaign to construct an even larger building. Head of School Maurice Vernon Powell, “Tio Powell”, moved the school to the corner of Rua Coronel Oscar Porto, close to Avenida Paulista.
The Lower School campus was inaugurated. The Montessori program that thrives today would be implemented a few years later.

International Baccalaureate (IB) courses were introduced in 1985. Un Kyung Park earned Graded’s first International Baccalaureate Diploma three years later.
In 1991, Graded invested in technology. These are Apple II-GS computers. With the help of Universidade de São Paulo (USP), the internet arrived on campus three years later.
The Lemann-Tully Arts Center was completed. In the ten years since, Graded’s artists, performers, and musicians have developed and shared their talents in countless ways.
The Graded Campus Project - Phase I was inaugurated with renovated gymnasiums and playgrounds.

The Big Four Tournament kicked off – Graded, Escola Americana de Brasília, Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro, and Chapel still compete every year.
As São Paulo expanded, Morumbi and Graded grew quickly with it.
The first Peer Group Connection (PGC) class was established. It has now been an integral part of our high school community for 20 years.
Giving to Graded was launched to invest in Graded’s future. It was later renamed the Centennial Campaign.
2016 The Graded Campus Project - Phase II was completed, including athletic fields, a student center, parking garage, wellness gymnasium, beach volleyball court, track, and maintenance building.

There are two ways to support Graded financially
Graded Annual Fund The Graded Annual Fund, the school’s annual giving program, supports priority projects that enhance learning experiences and sustain core programs. Like most top independent, non-profit, American schools, Graded relies upon philanthropic contributions to fulfill its mission, as tuition alone does not cover the entire cost of a child’s education. We encourage all members of the Graded community to participate in this important effort which funds educational enrichment, scholarships, professional development, and campus enhancements. This fund supports our yearly operating budget and makes an immediate impact on every student.
Centennial Campaign For the past 95 years, Graded has been recognized as an educational leader, dedicated to inspiring excellence, fostering intercultural competence, and empowering students to become engaged, ethical citizens. In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Graded launched the Centennial Campaign, an ambitious initiative to raise funds for three strategic priorities: The Graded Campus Project, the Graded Scholar Program, and the Excellence in Teaching Initiative.
