GRADED SCHOLAR PROGRAM
GRADED SCHOLAR PROGRAM
T
he Graded Scholar Program targets inequality by providing full-tuition scholarships and supplementary support to economically disadvantaged, highly gifted children, many of whom reside in the neighboring community of Paraisópolis. By “leveling the playing field,” Graded provides a life-changing opportunity to eager, bright young minds. Currently, there are ten children participating in this program. We aim to increase the number of Scholars to 24. Graded Scholars typically enter the school in sixth or seventh grade. They are selected after completing Graded’s intensive Outreach Program. These exceptional students enhance and diversify Graded’s student body. Graded Scholars have gone on to successfully attend both American and Brazilian universities.
OUTREACH PROGRAM
G
raded’s Outreach Program serves as a gateway into the Graded Scholar Program. Qualified candidates participate in a pre-screening process that includes document submission, on-campus Portuguese and mathematics tests, family and individual interviews, and home visits. Once accepted to the Outreach Program, participants are given the opportunity to take daily immersion English classes on campus and attend elective classes with current Graded students. In addition to gaining English fluency, Outreach Program participants benefit from the opportunity to experience life in Graded’s international community. “The friends I made, the places I explored, the knowledge I gained; they were all gifts from you. I feel like the protagonist of a novel, your novel. With that said, I want to thank you for writing such a fantastic story, and creating such a happy path for me, as your character, to follow and learn from; if I am who I am, and if I exist as I do, it is because of you.” Leo Oliveira Graded Scholar ’14 Skidmore College ’18
