Welcome to Connexion 2012! This 9th edition of Connexion is marked by modernisation. Under the plastic sheets wrapping up Villa Barton, a sustainable and refreshed building will be revealed this spring, a few months before another real estate project, the Edgar de Picciotto Student House, will be completed. Our goal with these developments is to provide our students, staff and guests with sound infrastructure for our growing operations. This shows our commitment to maintaining our position as one of the leading international schools of world affairs. For our participants and visitors, the renovation works in Park Barton should not distract you from meeting our extraordinarily accomplished and talented students. They come from all over the world but have one attribute in common: they are eager to join a workplace that will fulfil their dreams and aspirations of helping to build a better world. They have prepared themselves throughout the year to come to the forum in the hope that they would meet the right employer who could provide them with a short-term internship or a first-time job. To all public, private and non-profit organisations, we are confident that you will find exactly the person you are looking for.

To our students a warm word of welcome to you too. Whatever the level of your studies at the Graduate Institute, you will have the chance to meet representatives from an increasingly wide range of fields of activity and businesses. This year we are fortunate to welcome a higher number of non-governmental organisations than in the past. This reflects the growing number of NGOs coming to Geneva and is in turn an indication of Geneva’s continued role in global governance. A few of our traditional private partners will not be with us, a sign of the difficult economic times facing the financial industry. We are confident that this pause will be short-lived and that we will have the pleasure of having them with us again to celebrate our 10th anniversary. Staff and students have worked hard to make this forum a success and I wish you all a very productive Connexion 2012. Jacqueline CotÊ Head of Communications & Public Relations

Responsible of HR Promotion International Committee of the Red Cross*

You have been recruiting at the Institute for several years. How does this collaboration benefit you? For many years, the Institute has been a steady supplier of delegates to the ICRC. Those who eventually apply for a job at the ICRC often bring along not just the tools needed to survive in the humanitarian environment but also a certain maturity, which is equally important given the environments and situations we are working in. We have also been given an additional platform (a one day workshop) that usually helps us to inform and sensitise students who have a serious interest in getting involved in field work. Many of those who participate in this event do apply for a job at the ICRC and some have remained within the ICRC for

years. Other who are still with the ICRC actually teach at the Institute and thus we can actually close a very fruitful and inspiring circle, nicely highlighting how our field experience eventually flows back into the Institute. A perfect win-win situation! What qualities do our students have that particularly interest you? Graduate Institute students who have or develop an interest in the ICRC and its humanitarian action usually bring along the fibre of compassion. Apart from this very important ingredient, they receive a lot of other important intellectual tools that are vital when confronted with the situations one may face in the

field such as sharp analytical skills, an intricate understanding of the complexities in international relations. Another important issue is that the students focus not only on how to question ideas and concepts, they are taught a constructive, solution oriented approach. This is essential and helps shaping those profiles that we are looking for. What types of profiles are you most particularly interested in? The ICRC needs people with at least two years of working experience and language skills. We look for candidates with strong interpersonal and management skills who are able to work independently. In addition,

people who work for the ICRC must be resistant to stress. Confirmed written and oral skills in English and French are important and other languages are an asset (e.g. Arabic, Russian, Persian or Spanish). What types of positions are available? For people who have studied at the Graduate Institute there are a variety of positions available. People without prior working experience can apply for internship positions. Those who have the necessary working experience and language skills can apply for delegate positions in the field and depending on work experience also for posts at headquarters.

Recruiting for Geneva Office McKinsey & Company*

You have been recruiting at the Institute for several years. How does this collaboration benefit you? At McKinsey & Company, we recruit on a yearly basis. To reach students from a wide range of backgrounds, we organise a variety of events at the Institute. The Institute offers flexible services and valuable support, bringing us a variety of opportunities to be present on campus and to meet with high-profile students. Above all, the students who attend the events are always very inquisitive, which makes every interaction and discussion highly interesting. What qualities do our students have that particularly interest you? We look for people who are driven and passionate and who share our interest in leading an intercultural dialogue in our everyday work.

Day by day, our consultants work with clients all over the world. Therefore, they not only need to be brilliant, out-ofthe-box thinkers, they must also possess cultural sensitivity and adapt rapidly to the unknown. Moreover, the clients we serve range from multinational corporations to non-profit organisations and governments. Thus, we also need consultants with an interest in public policy and international governance. Given our needs, we believe Graduate Institute students are particularly well suited to our line of work. They come from a wide range of countries and cultures and speak several languages. Moreover, the Institute’s curriculum opens their minds to the world. They are curious and adaptable, both by nature and by training.

Employers’ testimonials

What types of profiles are you most particularly interested in? We have no preference for candidates from any particular area of study. Rather, we look for four key intrinsic qualities:  Problem solving skills: strong intellectual abilities and rigor, but also good practical sense  Achievements: a record of academic excellence, but also passion, energy, and determination  Personal impact: the ability to engage people in sometimes tough situations  Leadership: a demonstrated ability to drive positive change (e.g. in extracurricular activities) All our consultants are well-rounded individuals, who have a good mix of these skills and are fun to work with. This is what makes them successful and valued by our clients. What types of positions are available? We have open positions every year, with the entry point determined by the study level. Hence, with a bachelor’s degree, you can start as a Fellow Analyst; with a master’s as a Fellow; and with a PhD, an MBA, or several years of

work experience as an Associate. We also offer internships throughout the year for students who are still studying. Whatever the entry position, every one who joins us can expect two things from a career at McKinsey: choice and growth. As the largest management consulting firm worldwide, we offer our new consultants the opportunity to work on almost any topic, in almost any sector. As they gain experience, consultants may choose to shape their own career and specialise in one or more different sectors of activity. Examples of our work include defining an agriculture strategy for a developing country, cutting the CO2 emissions of a logistics company, and redefining the IT infrastructure of a bank. Moreover, McKinsey provides continuous opportunities for professional and personal development (on-the-job, training courses, and mentoring). Our young Associates also have the possibility to enroll for an MBA or a PhD at the institution of their choice. As they evolve through a process of continuous development, we match the new skills and capabilities of our consultants with greater challenges and responsibilities in their work.

Coordinator, Rural Employment and Decent Work Programme International Labour Office (ILO)*

You have been recruiting at the Institute for several years. How does this collaboration benefit you? This collaboration allows ILO to:  Find quickly, from a set of potential candidates, one or two with a good to ideal profile for the specific tasks needed at a given moment by the programme I am running  Have assistants with the latest knowledge in technical fields, research methodologies, and computer skills  Have assistants who are keen to learn, to contribute to development, and to propose fresh ideas  Achieve a combination of sound technical work/delivery and serious professional behaviour, with openness and informality/flexibility in work relations

* Presentation by ILO: Wednesday 21 March at 11:15, room S4

What qualities do our students have that particularly interest you? The Graduate Institute’s students have mainly a combination of specialisations in specific fields (e.g. rural economics) and multidisciplinary backgrounds (e.g. capacity to grasp political, legal, social and historical hurdles). Also, openness to different cultures; analytical skills; precision in work; responsibility to deliver strong products in time; capacity to write and behave “diplomatically”; and to work in teams. Many candidates also have very good linguistic skills and are multilingual. What types of profiles are you most particularly interested in? I am interested in economists preferably, but other social scientists too such as development specialists, particularly

rural development. They should have some work experience, possibly in analytical-type work, and possibly exposure to field work as well as the capacity to:  Learn quickly, take initiative, propose solutions, be creative, and adapt to new tasks/methodologies  Analyse, synthesise and draw key points from complex documents  Draft and express oneself with precision, synthetically, and using an engaging style  Work in English, French and Spanish  Surf the net, use modern technologies (including websites and platforms)  Work in teams, be diplomatic, and a “networker”  Be flexible  Work on different types of tasks, moving from one to the other swiftly

 become truly engaged in work and not just “from 9 to 5” What types of positions are available? Preference to start with a six-month internship, to allow the candidate to learn basic facts and work procedures of ILO and its Rural Programme, and to assess the match between the candidate’s capacities and the specific needs of the Programme. If the match is good, proposal to continue with a six-month short term contract; then with a longer contract, on a technical cooperation project, for instance. Those two or more years’ work experience will be a definite asset for the young person if he/she decides to take part in an ILO competition (usually at P2 level), but also for those of other agencies.

GRADUATES’ SUCCESS STORIES

Daniel Walter

Associate Boston Consulting Group, The (BCG)*

How did you start your career? Participating in BCG’s GROW Workshop in November 2010 helped me decide to start my career at BCG. After going through the interview process about half a year before graduating, I joined the company in October 2011. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? Choosing the Graduate Institute for my graduate studies was based on several factors. For one, the competitive recruitment policy of the Institute allows it to have small classes with a lot of interaction between the students and the professors. Having professors with a great reputation for both research and teaching reinforced my wish to do my master at this institution. Furthermore, having classmates from all * Presentation by BCG: Wednesday 21 March at 12:15, room S1

around the world with a myriad of different backgrounds creates a rich cultural experience. Cost also played a role. Why did you choose a career at the BCG? I chose to apply at BCG because it offered a challenging job that teaches a wide range of skills. I feel that working at BCG, as a first full-time job, prepares you extremely well for almost any job in many different industries. In addition, you have the chance to create a lot of impact with your work from the start. Having access to the senior management of a client lets you accumulate a lot of knowledge about different business models and topics easily, which can be very valuable. Last but not least, I like the atmosphere and the people. You will seldom find somebody at BCG say that a task is too

difficult or a problem impossible to solve. Additionally, almost all of my co-workers are very active people, having some of the most interesting hobbies. Given that the age-difference is usually small, you are likely to find new friends at the company.

questions. All of these are important skills for working at BCG. The Graduate Institute also gives the students a lot of independence and liberty in doing their assignments to the best of their knowledge, just as BCG does.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at the Boston Consulting Group? If you have extraordinary skills in problem solving, structured thinking and putting your results on paper, you are likely to be successful at BCG. Often that requires familiarity with numbers and statistics, although expert knowledge of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques is rarely required. You should also be hard-working and flexible regarding your work-life balance. If you like to travel, this can be an advantage. Clear and direct communication as well as an open mind during discussions and brainstorming is as important as respecting other people’s opinions and inputs. Teams work closely together throughout the whole duration of a project.

What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? The focus on global topics and the sensitivity to go much further than just looking at some main indicators has helped me a lot to realise opportunities for development. Often this meant that my main analysis would not focus solely on the facts and figures, but also on the social climate and the wellbeing of individuals. That is something I have realised to be very effective.

Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? Yes, as there are professors who have a unique way of cultivating student’s curiosity, ability to think critically and asking the right

How did you benefit from your position at the Boston Consulting Group? I only joined BCG in October 2011, but I have already met and gotten to know some of the most extraordinary people from all over Europe. I have also been given the chance to travel and to work on some topics of high personal interest to me. In the future I hope that working for BCG will help me find my way professionally, and prepare me uniquely well for which ever route I will chose to take.

How did you start your career? My undergraduate studies were very focused on language, and a lot of my extracurricular activities and jobs centered on communication. I started my career by aiming for internships which were based on the skills I had (especially written communication) but would allow me to build on them and apply my international affairs education as well. I am very happy that I was able to do two excellent internships in communications at the HD Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue and CARE International. While at HD and CARE, I benefited from the experience and guidance of my supervisors who gave me a wide variety of professional opportunities.

out of what is familiar and into a “foreign” and international environment like Geneva. That really adds a lot.

Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? I think if you really want to study international affairs from an international perspective, you have to get out of your own country and see how things look from the outside. Where I am from, the US, there are plenty of options for an international degree. But staying there would not have gotten me

Why did you choose an experience at DuPont? I loved my work at HD Centre and CARE, and that helped me figure out exactly what I was looking for in my first fulltime job: an entry-level communications position in an international setting where I could keep learning. DuPont has a Graduate Internship Program, and it was exactly what I

Did you work during your studies in Geneva? Yes. There were some busy times trying to combine the two, but being able to have these internships really made my experience here more complete. Just as an example, learning about food security in Nigeria in class was valuable, but getting a glimpse of how a humanitarian aid organisation operates nutrition programmes for Nigerian children and their mothers – seeing how it plays out “in real life” – helped paint the big picture for me.

Graduates’ success stories

wanted: professional training; real, relevant experience; and a clear commitment to investing in the development of their employees. Plus, after years studying the links between the public and private sectors, I was very interested in working in a private sector role for a new perspective. In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at DuPont and in communication and public affairs? I think for my role, flexibility. I do not do the same thing every day, and that is where having a multidisciplinary background really helps. Being an effective communicator is obviously important, but just as important is being open-minded and eager to understand a complex organisation so that you are able to interpret and illustrate it for its various stakeholders. More generally for my department, you have to be able to go out and connect with as many people as possible. They have the information everyone else needs, so being in touch with them is crucial.

Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? I would say the Institute gave me the opportunity to interact with classmates and faculty from all over – both geographically and ideologically. I feel comfortable connecting with people who studied a wide range of issues in depth, understanding their expert assessments, and synthesising different points of view together into a comprehensible and relevant format. What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? A multidisciplinary background gives you a great range of tools to understand current affairs and how different political, economic, and social phenomena are linked. I am able to draw from my education at the Institute in game theory, economics, and trade law and I gained the advantage of being able to think about complex issues in a variety of ways. This is valuable to me because before I can break down a problem and express it comprehensively, I have to understand the main components.
