Connexion THE CAREERs FORUM programme

APPLIED RESEARCH SEMINAR Explore challenges in your sector, work with promising researchers at the Graduate Institute

Students from the Graduate Institute’s interdisciplinary master programmes in international affairs and development studies carry out research projects in groups (called Applied Research Seminars or ARS) for international and non-governmental organisations, public institutions and the private sector as part of their studies.

The results of the ARS are delivered to the partners by the Institute’s students through reports and presentations. By helping students gain hands-on experience working in partnership with them on real world projects, organisations can also tap into the Graduate Institute’s talent pool for recruitment and expertise.

The research is prepared in the spring and is carried out between September and December every year, each student dedicating approximately 100-150 hours to the project. The groups receive guidance and supervision by Graduate Institute faculty on methodology and content and the partners are expected to interact with the groups on a regular basis. Students do not receive any monetary compensation for their work but partners are expected to cover non-discretionary expenses such as long distancetravel costs incurred as part of their mandate.

Welcome to Connexion 2014! This year’s event sets a new standard for Connexion, our Career’s Forum. For our participants and first-time visitors you will discover the Institute’s new home, the Maison de la paix, which has quickly become a landmark in International Geneva since its doors opened to the public last September. You will be stunned by its elegant and innovative design and the art works commissioned as part of the architectural project, in particular, the Peter Kogler honeycomb covering which links our stunning auditoriums to our beautiful new library. Moving into our new home marks the beginning of a second chapter in the life of the Graduate Institute, following the merger and integration of our two predecessor institutions back in 2008. We have ambitious goals for this new chapter, both in terms of the depth of our work and the strength and diversity of our community. We will continue to search and select the best and brightest young women and men from all over the world to study here and prepare them for successful international careers. Former Secretary-General of the United Nations and Institute alumnus Kofi Annan set the tone for this new chapter as he opened this academic year: the Graduate

Institute sits squarely, and plays the role of hub and catalyst, in International Geneva. This in turn allows us to support and enrich Geneva’s, and Switzerland’s, international, intellectual and professional communities. Our new home has inspired us to be bold in reaching out to our partners and they have been amazingly present in all our conferences and events. This year’s Connexion has benefited from this wave of interest and has attracted a record number of prospective employers for our students, from across all sectors: the public sector with the many Geneva-based international organisations and the Swiss federal administration, the private sector with its financial institutions, advisory companies, traders and the media, and the large third sector with NGOs, think thanks and other non-profits. To our participants, I wish you happy discoveries of the Maison de la paix and our dynamic student body. To our students, may you uncover the international job or internship of your dreams. Jacqueline Coté Director of Public Relations

GRADUATES’ SUCCESS STORIES

Nathalie Mrak

Project Coordinator, Access to Health (A2H) Merck Group How did you start your career? I first started my career working at the UNICEF headquarters in New York in the HIV and AIDS programme. It was here that I first learned about global health and the key issues affecting the ability of people in developing income countries to access health services and solutions. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? I chose to study at the Institute since it is located in Geneva, the renowned center for global health. With the WHO located here along with numerous international organizations, NGOs and private companies, Geneva is a great place to get exposure to the latest topics in global health. The Institute helps facilitate

students’ interactions with these stakeholders through courses, seminars and public events. Also, the Institute is well-positioned to help students think critically about the latest issues in international affairs. The faculty come from diverse geographic areas and disciplinary backgrounds which provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the latest issues and encourages the use of a multifaceted approach when addressing challenges. Why did you choose a career at Merck? When the opportunity to work at Merck presented itself, I seized it because I was very impressed by the work they were doing around the issue of access to health. Merck has an

| 13

impressive profile of health solutions – medicines, products, technology, etc. – which provide them with the capabilities to truly make a difference reaching under-served populations who have limited access to health services and solutions.

affecting developing countries. The “hands-on” approach of some courses, particularly my Applied Research Seminar (ARS), provided me with practical knowledge and skills which have been essential to my success at Merck.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at Merck? For a successful career at Merck, commitment and creative thinking are important. Merck is very keen to making a difference and it is essential that its employees share this commitment in order to ensure the realisation of this goal. As Merck’s motto is “living innovation,” creative thinking is also important in order to contribute to the company’s novel approaches to addressing the latest health challenges.

What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? The multidisciplinary nature of the Institute has definitely provided me a solid intellectual foundation. Particularly in the MDev, I had the opportunity to take courses with professors from different disciplines – economics, anthropology, law – which have all provided me with the tools and knowledge to approach issues and challenges from varied perspectives.

Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? Yes, the Institute prepared me well for my position. Courses on key issues in global health were offered as well as my required courses for my degree in Development Studies (MDev) provided me with a sound understanding of the latest issues

How did you benefit from your position at Merck? I have benefited immensely from working at Merck. Through my work I have come across issues and trends which I normally would have not been exposed to in my courses. This has enabled me to embark on research assignments which address current and future global challenges.

| Beatrice Mosello

Research Officer Overseas Development Institute (ODI), London (UK)

How did you start your career? I was enrolled in a PhD programme at the Institute – for the first 3 years I was based at the Institute in Geneva working as a Research Assistant on an EU-funded research project. I then left for Central Asia where I did my fieldwork and spent the last 9 months of my PhD at the London School of Economics thanks to a scholarship from the Swiss National Science Foundation. My research focused on climate change adaptation in the water sector – both topics that are at the top of the ODI’s agenda. I thus became more and more interested in ODI’s research and applied for a Project Officer position as soon as my PhD was (more or less) completed. I started working in the ODI’s Climate Change and Environment team and then moved to a more research-oriented position in the Water Policy Team, where I am currently employed since October 2013. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? The Graduate Institute attracted me because of its reputation as an academic institution preparing its students for a career in international organisations. Its location in Geneva (when I started all the classrooms where still in beautiful Villa Barton by the lake) was also a plus, as it allowed access to UN organisations and NGOs

for internships and other experiences such as the Geneva Model United Nations (GIMUN), conferences, and other cultural events. The bilingual nature of the Institute influenced my decision as well: my English and French were a little bit shaky when I moved to Geneva, and studying at the Institute has been a great opportunity to bring both languages to a proficiency level. Why did you choose a career at ODI? The Overseas Development Institute is one of the most well-known and well-reputed international think tanks in the UK – as well as in Europe and worldwide. It brings together excellent researchers working on the most relevant international development issues. Among these, climate-resilient development and water governance figure prominently – and since my expertise precisely lies in these fields, ODI was a very attractive destination for my professional career once my PhD was completed. In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at ODI? From a professional point of view, ODI requires you to be an innovative thinker, a smart professional that is able to question

| 15

the assumptions of international development by producing high-quality research and knowledge products. You need to be rigorous in your research, flexible to take in and respond to new developments and realities, and good at communicating your work to a differentiated audience. Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? Yes, absolutely. The multicultural environment of the Institute gave me that openness that was required to adapt to an equally multicultural organisation such as ODI – and nourished my willingness to travel and see and understand more of the world, which is also a very important requirement to be an ODI employee. My MSc and PhD taught me to conduct rigorous academic research, and to think creatively and innovatively about the world’s problems. My language skills, also a legacy of the Institute, proved essential to conduct research in different regions of the world, being able to easily adapt to Frenchspeaking and English-speaking contexts and to communicate with people from different social, cultural and geographical contexts.

What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? I was very well-trained on theories and methods from the political science and international relations disciplines, in which I specialised. Beyond that, the Graduate Institute offers a wide range of courses, some of them spanning across multiple fields, from law to economics; and this is crucial if one wants to have a more holistic view of a problem (which, in turn, is essential to find solutions to it). How did you benefit from your position at ODI? I am enjoying working at ODI immensely: I am doing applied research on the topics I am interested in (climate change, resilience, water governance), which implies fieldwork. In turn, this results in a lot of travelling to incredible places and collaborating with amazing people – other researchers, humanitarian and development practitioners, farmers’ and water users’ associations, women’s organisations, micro-credit institutions, government representatives, and so on. I have a permanent contract (not a bad achievement in itself these days) and work in an environment full of brilliant and friendly people that I am happy to be able to call ‘colleagues’. | Amiyna Farouque

Programme Officer, Western Africa Team | Grant Management Division The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

How did you start your career? I started during my Masters with an internship at The Geneva Forum that works in disarmament. Following my graduation, I worked for numerous entities including an anti-human trafficking campaign, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Sri Lankan Permanent Mission, CARE International, and the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR). My series of short term posts finally ended when I started at the Global Fund where I have received a long-term contract. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? I had originally applied to the Graduate Institute due to its proximity to all the international organisations, as well as its reputation. At the time when I was accepted, I was on a very different path to teach English in China for a year. The Graduate Institute’s scholarship and financial assistance also positively affected my decision.

Why did you choose a career at The Global Fund? Having worked in NGOs, government, international organisation and UN-settings, I have seen the various ways in which large and small entities function, and The Global Fund has the reputation of having less bureaucracy than the UN, and acting more on results-based performance. I did not originally imagine I would work for a financing organisation, but given that I get to see results on a regular basis, is very fulfilling. In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at the Global Fund? I believe that in order to work at the Global Fund one has to be determined, skilled in multi-tasking and critical/strategic thinking, pay very close attention to detail and have some experience in monitoring and evaluation. Communication and negotiation skills are key and approaching countries with no prejudgements is very important in order to work in the best interests of the country requesting funds.

| 17

Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? The composition of the student body particularly helped prepare me for my career – having to deal on a daily basis with people of very different cultures and mindsets taught me a lot about the importance of communication, tolerance, cooperation, listening, etc. – all necessary for being a good Programme Officer and all useful for moving forward in any position. What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? The Institute’s opportunities to study abroad were very useful, where my exchange at the University of George Washington proved to be enriching. Moreover, the Graduate Institute’s requirement to either complete an internship and/or take some practical-skills workshops were very useful and can be applied at work settings (such as negotiation skills).

The Institute also provided us with a research-based/academic background that was vital during my research posts. How did you benefit from your position at The Global Fund? In the 11 months at the Fund, I have grown significantly in terms of work skills – from applying negotiation skills, monitoring, communications, problem-solving, evaluation and inevitably some diplomacy and politics. There is never a dull day and the fact that the Fund is a cross between the best aspects of an international organisation and a financing institution makes the work more rewarding. The international health and development component is addressed using a private-sector-like approach thereby addressing more substance and producing tangible results in a short span of time. To work in a humanitarian field in a dynamic and results-based environment has only brought me more motivation and skills to develop my career. | Anca Merfea

Product Manager, Aviation Management Training | Member and External Relations Division International Air Transport Association (IATA)

How did you start your career? During my Master’s programme at the Graduate Institute I had the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and develop new skills through a series of internships and part-time jobs at the UN and several NGOs in Geneva. This prepared me for a more challenging yet rewarding career at IATA. I found out about these positions and others through the Career Services. I will always be very grateful for the role the Connexion Forum 2009 and 2010 played in my life in terms of expanding my network and finding new jobs. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? After finishing my Bachelor degree in economics and international relations I was ready for a new challenge that would combine the two backgrounds. After some research, I found the perfect match to be the Master in International Affairs (MIA) programme from the Graduate Institute. I was attracted by the quality of the courses, the board of professors that are recognized worldwide and by the international exposure that you can get in Geneva. The Graduate Institute was indeed the right

choice! Besides the theoretical part, the courses I attended prepared me for my future career. Why did you choose a career at IATA? I’ve always had a natural inclination towards training, transfer of knowledge and teaching. I wanted to channel my energy on something that could make a significant impact in the world. At IATA Training and Development Institute we train more than 35,000 aviation professionals each year in a wide range of areas of expertise like aviation management, airline law, environment, etc. The aviation industry has a huge impact on human existence and development so we have the responsibility to ensure quality training and expertise. In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at IATA? First of all, IATA, the trade association for the world’s airlines, represents some 240 airlines or 84% of all total air traffic. We support a variety of aviation activities and we help formulate the industry policies. To succeed with IATA you need to be able

| 19

to make a difference, as our products are built to connect the world. Apart from achieving results and acting with integrity, you have to have the ability to work across cultures, demonstrate cultural intelligence and teamwork. As the industry is rapidly changing you should be able to embrace innovation and be creative. Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? Definitely! The Institute prepares you for any job, it’s up to you to follow your instincts and succeed. For instance, I did not have an aviation background but I understood the international community quite well and this helped me to drive the aviation training business. There are some skills that I developed while studying at the Graduate Institute (analytical skills, negotiation skills, communication skills, etc.) and I now apply them in my day to day job and beyond.

enabled me to think globally. The world is changing, the issues that we are facing today are extremely complex so I gradually developed the ability to be flexible, innovative and look outside the box for a suitable solution. How do you benefit from your position at IATA? Over the last four years since I have been working for IATA, I have changed project and responsibilities three times. I have had the opportunity to learn and grow in various capacities and more importantly to make a difference in my department. My current position is about managing a portfolio of courses on aviation law, environment and airline management with the help of more than 70 industry experts. The beauty of the job is that every day I learn something new on aviation specifics, marketing, account management or course quality.

What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? The MIA programme that I completed at the Graduate Institute More graduates’ success stories on graduateinstitute.ch/career

| Daniel Walter

Associate The Boston Consulting Group (BCG)

How did you start your career? Participating in BCG’s GROW Workshop in November 2010 helped me decide to start my career at BCG. After going through the interview process about half a year before graduating, I joined the company in October 2011. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? Choosing the Graduate Institute for my graduate studies was based on several factors. For one, the competitive recruitment policy of the Institute allows to have small classes with a lot of interaction between the students and the professors. Having professors with a great reputation for both research and teaching reinforced my wish to do my master at this institution. Furthermore, having classmates from all around the world with a myriad of different backgrounds creates a rich cultural experience. Why did you choose a career at BCG? I chose to apply at the Boston Consulting Group because it is a challenging job that teaches various skills quickly. It requires communicating the results of structured, critical thinking and

thorough analysis in the most accessible way at all times. I feel that working at BCG, as a first full-time job, prepares you extremely well for almost any job in many different industries. In addition, you have the chance to create a lot of impact with your work from the start. Having access to the senior management of a client lets you accumulate a lot of knowledge about different business models and topics easily, which can be very valuable. Last but not least, I like the atmosphere and the people. You will seldom find somebody at BCG say that a task is too difficult or a problem impossible to solve. Additionally, almost all of my co-workers are very active people, having some of the most interesting hobbies. Given that the age-difference is usually small, you are likely to find new friends at the company. In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at BCG? If you have extraordinary skills in problem solving, structured thinking and putting your results on paper, you are likely to be successful at BCG. Often that requires familiarity with numbers and statistics, although expert knowledge of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques is rarely required. You

| 21

should also be hard-working and flexible regarding your worklife balance. If you like to travel, this can be an advantage. Clear and direct communication as well as an open mind during discussions and brainstorming is as important as respecting other people’s opinions and inputs. Teams work closely together throughout the whole duration of a project. Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? The Graduate Institute prepared me well as there are many professors at the Institute that have a unique way of cultivating student’s curiosity, ability to think critically and asking the right questions. All of these are important skills for working at BCG. The Graduate Institute also gives students a lot of independence and liberty in doing their assignments to the best of their knowledge, just as BCG does.

What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? The focus on global topics and the sensitivity to go much further than just looking at some main indicators has helped me to realise opportunities for development. Often this meant that my main analysis would not focus solely on the facts and figures, but also on the social climate and the well-being of individuals. That is something I have realised to be very effective. How did you benefit from your position at BCG? I joined BCG in October 2011, and have since met some of the most extraordinary people from all over Europe. I have also been given the chance to travel and to work on some topics of high personal interest to me. In the future I hope that working for BCG will help me find my way professionally, and prepare me uniquely well for which ever route I will chose to take.

Junior Programme Officer | External Relations and Policy Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD)

How did you start your career? Quite early on, I started doing small projects alongside my studies, such as volunteering for the British Red Cross and working in administrative positions. This helped me obtain my internship with Geneva Call, which I did as part of my Master in Development studies (MDev) programme in 2012. This introduced me to and got me interested in the field of mine action. I subsequently applied to and was selected for the position of Junior Programme Officer with the GICHD. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? I wanted to be in Geneva for its prominence in the humanitarian and development arena. The Graduate Institute offered appealing courses and appeared to be the right place to start a career in this field.

Why did you choose a career at the GICHD? My entry in the field of humanitarian mine action and the GICHD was somewhat inadvertent. I came to Geneva with an open mind and a willingness to experience the different opportunities presented to me. The more I learned about this sector, the more fascinated I became. The GICHD provided a great starting point for my career as it deals with mine action from different angles and is staffed with experts from all over the world. In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at the GICHD? Although the Junior Programme Officer positions vary according to the divisions, they require a number of key shared qualities: > Organisational skills > Communication skills, especially different languages > Eagerness to learn and preparedness to ask questions > Keen attention to detail

| 23

Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? The Graduate Institute prepared me well because in addition to the academic dimension, I also had access to the various forms of support offered by the Career Services.

How did you benefit from your position at the GICHD? This position has presented me with the opportunity to experience this field in different ways, including researching specific topics, participating in missions and taking part in diplomatic meetings and IHL conventions.

What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? Possibly the course which has been of greatest benefit to me in this position was Jakob Kellenberger’s module ‘Humanitarian Action, Frameworks and Practice’. I now work on issues directly discussed in this module, including various International Humanitarian Law (IHL) conventions and disarmament.

Junior Economic and Social Affairs Expert Permanent Delegation of the EU to the UN Office and other IOs in Geneva

How did you start your career? Since an early age, I have made a conscious effort towards an international career. I am currently enrolled in the Master in International Law programme at the Graduate Institute and worked as a researcher in International Law, focusing on International Trade at the University of Neuchâtel (CH). Having previously obtained a fellowship to work at the trade department of the Italian Consulate in Sydney (AUS), I later joined the Delegation of the EU in Geneva where I was offered a traineeship as Junior Economic and Social Affairs Expert.

Why did you choose a career at the Delegation of the EU to the UN? I decided to apply to the Delegation of the EU as I was very much fascinated by the complex realm of multilateral diplomacy and the mechanics of the European Common Foreign and Security Policy in the Post-Lisbon setting. Throughout my academic and professional experiences, I have always been a strong advocate of the European integration process and its role in the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.

Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? I wanted to specialise in the field of international law and I have been attracted by the Graduate Institute’s eminent tradition of legal scholars and practitioners providing top notch teaching in practically every branch of the field. Cosmopolitanism is another factor which contributed to my decision. The Institute gathers highly motivated and brilliant minds from every corner of the globe. Last but not least, it is ideally located at the heart of International Geneva providing its students with a plethora of professional opportunities.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at the Delegation of the EU to the UN? Life at the Delegation is extremely dynamic thus requiring motivated and proactive people. Intercultural communication skills, languages, as well as a sound knowledge of the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the EU institutions are also of paramount importance. In addition, a certain degree of specialisation in one of the areas of work of the Delegation, namely human rights, humanitarian issues, economic and social affairs and health, is definitely an asset.

| 25

Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? I believe that the Graduate Institute endows students with a competitive advantage in the job market thanks especially to the outstanding level of its faculty. Furthermore, the daily exchange of ideas, debate as well as cooperation amongst students from all over the world helps in developing communication and intellectual skills which are necessary in pursuing an international career. What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? Certainly the ability of thinking critically and developing an independent reasoning over the most significant challenges facing the globalised world. I am also learning how to understand and

analyse complex international legal issues. At the Institute, theoretical approaches are always put in practical perspective. Moreover, its multidisciplinary setting allows its students to become ‘all-rounders’ in international affairs. How did you benefit from your position at the Delegation of the EU to the UN? At the Delegation of the EU I have been able to put into practice my academic knowledge and obtain hands-on experience in the advancement of EU foreign policy within multilateral fora. I was able to contribute to the daily work of a delegation and to the coordination of the 28 EU Member States.

| Ivan Ovando-Lacroux

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AFTER GRADUATION

Our surveys of graduates carried out since 2008 show that almost all of the Institute’s students had obtained prior professional or internship experience, often in an international environment, during their studies.
