GRAEME NOETH C A N D I DAT E A R C H I T EC T

“Graeme did an excellent job in his position and was an asset to our organization during his tenure with the office. He has exceptional skills in order to produce hand drawn architectural concept sketches, 3D renderings and fly-through video animations within a limited timeframe. He has excellent skills in building information modelling software, can work independently, and is able to effectively multi-task to ensure that all projects are completed in a timely manner. “

- Roald Meyer (Director / Anthrop Architects)

I am currently working towards my Professional Registration, and aim to be a registered architect by in the next few years. While I see myself having a strong sense of design and conceptualisation, I would like to expand my knowledge of construction, details and project management.

HOUSE PATERNOSTER House Paternoster is a small retirement home in Paternoster on the western coast of South Africa. The client wanted a 3-bedroom open plan beach house which allowed for maximum natural light and views to the exterior. With extremely strict aesthetical limitation due to the architectural guidelines for the small historical fisherman’s town, the design responds in a modern way towards it’s surrounding context while respecting the guidelines and the town’s spirit. The design allows for ample cross-ventilation and natural light to flood interior spaces. PATERNOSTER | WESTERN CAPE | SOUTH AFRICA

HOUSE RIDGE Situated in the far east of Pretoria in “The Ridge Estate”, the client presented us with a corner site with minimal slope to design his long awaited dream home. The brief called for a small budget orientated design that would cater 3 bedrooms, 3 garages, open plan living space and a portion of the site for the client’s vegatable garden. SOL PLAATJIE UNIVERSITY In June 2013 the Department of Higher Education and Training launched an architectural competition for the design of a new university for the Northern Cape Province, to be constructed in the city of Kimberley. The brief was to design a mixed use building that will accommodate retail, academic facilities, administration offices and hostels. The challenge for the architects was to design a building that responds to an existing urban design framework that will integrate the new development with the existing city fabric. Furthermore it was expected to design a building that will respond to the historic, cultural and climatic aspects of Kimberley and the Northern Cape region as well as to create a study and social environment that will include all groups of society. A total of approximately 60 entries were received and Wilkinson Architects, in joint venture with Mashilo Lambrechts Architects and GXY Architects, were announced the winners as part of a design team of 5 architect firms. HOUSE AvdK Situated about an hour east of Toronto in the small town of Coburg along Lake Ontario, this projected presented several unique challenges. First - the client, an Interior Designer by profession, bought two adjacent properties and wanted to develop a family home spread over both properties. The first lot would house the main family home, a five-bedroom, open plan kitchen-dining and living room area along with a walk out basement. The second property would be used for the garage and studio space. Second - the client was heavily inspired by Australian and Italian country style architecture – suited for warmer, more forgiving weather than that of the Canadian winter. This made materials and detailing

challenging, as Canadian code and construction have strict regulations in terms of thermal design. Thirdly - the project was split up between Section Architects, and Van Der King Interiors, with Section being responsible for all the exterior architectural work. This meant direct and constant communication between the architect and the client, to hone the look and feel of the house from the start and to make sure that we translate those warmer exterior styles with the clients interior intent. The result, a unique home by Canadian standards challenges the style of architecture commonly found in Ontario. COBORGH | ONTARIO | CANADA

ELISABETH HOUSE Elisabeth House is a 75 bed Long Term Residential Care home situated in Hamilton, Ontario. The building has is divided into 3 occupancies, Memory Care, Palliative Care and Residential Living. The Facility is located on a sloped site surrounded by an existing forest and is therefore mainly isolated from any urban context. The concept of the building was to have a stone like anchor cut through the main building, acting not only as a wayfinding device, but also serving as the building’s main circulation core. The wood-look exterior with softer earth tones are in response to the natural surrounding forest and context HAMILITON | ONTARIO | CANADA

HOUSE SEE 01 This small conceptual one-bedroom retreat is situated on a moderate beach facing property in Paternoster. The design is for a couple to escape the busy life of the city while still being able to accommodate friends and families for get togethers. By respecting the context of neighboring houses and the strict Paternoster Architectural Guidelines, the proposed designed tries to achieve something traditional in massing and style, while bringing modern, minimalist interiors to life. The design is equipped with a open plan Kitchen, Dining and Living Room facing the ocean, along with one bedroom and study area. The garage also includes a small studio space should they ever feel the need to work from this gorgeous little town. PATERNOSTER | WESTERN CAPE | SOUTH AFRICA

TRANSNET: INNOVATION CENTRE & RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT LABS Linking through Visual Expression of Kinetic Energy “kinetic energy” -energy which a body possesses by virtue of being in motion In the day-to-day operation of an office building, movement is experienced on a physical level by virtue of the building occupants or users moving from one space to another. This movement through space can either be emphasized horizontally or vertically. What happens when this movement is partially re-directed diagonally? By introducing ramps to the existing building, new circulation routes are created where interior spaces are linked, enabling the potential interaction of occupants to exchange ideas and collaborate. Due to the restrictive nature of the existing building envelope, a ‘second skin’ is introduced to solve various environmental design shortcomings. These additional facades are designed to not only accommodate vertical gardens, but also linking new building services like HVAC systems, rainwater collection tanks, renewable energy sources, heat pumps, solar shading, and glare reducing architectural elements. The position of the facades provide the perfect opportunity for various meeting, collaboration, observation and contemplation spaces to punch through the old facade, creating new additional floor area with views into the distance. How can intellectual movement be experienced or expressed? Sharing ideas, reviewing concepts, and testing prototypes are important activities for developmental processes. In order to distribute these activities efficiently through out the building, a pneumatic tube delivery system is introduced, forming a network of connected collaboration between building occupants. DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT: NATIONAL NORMS & STANDARDS FOR SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE DEELIVERY The National Norms and Standards for Social Infrastructure Delivery provide guidance on interventions surrounding the sustainability of new infrastructure. In order to ensure that there is uniformity within the DSD sector, the Department developed National Norms and Standards for Social Infrastructure Delivery for each facility type in order to ensure that any new building would be built according to a standard.

PASSIVE SURVEILANCE

Improving the design of new infrastructure within the Department’s portfolio, requires all new developments to have a high standard of design. Well-designed buildings have a significant impact on the overall quality of the lives of people that use these facilities on a daily basis. Well-designed buildings not only look impressive, but makes practical and economic sense as well. They function well, are easily accessible by people living with a disability, cost-effective to maintain, adaptable to change with the future circumstances, and help to avoid wasteful use of energy and materials. The National Norms and Standards for Social Infrastructure Delivery, provide guidance on interventions surrounding the sustainability of new infrastructure by focusing on WHO delivers social services, WHERE social service facilities are to be located, WHAT is to be constructed and/or delivered, HOW this is to be constructed and/or delivered, and at what COST. The National Norms and Standards for Social Infrastructure Delivery will consist of the following five (5) chapters: CHAPTER 01 - Spatial Norms & Standards (‘WHERE’ & ‘WHAT’) CHAPTER 02 - Architectural Blueprint Designs (‘HOW’) CHAPTER 03 - Security Standards (‘HOW’) CHAPTER 04 - Costing Models (‘COST’) CHAPTER 05 - HR Model (‘WHO’) TEXT BY: ANTHROP ARCHITECTS

CENTRAL HEALTH - LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES This P3 project called for the design of two 60-bed Long Term Care Facilities in the Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor region. The challenge was to design two facilities, not only cost-effective but that would work on two extremely difficult and complex sites. While making sure the floor plan designs are as efficient as possible, the design also aims to create a home like environment for its residents with an hierarchy of spaces - from Public, Semi-private and private spaces. The design emphasises short walking distances, efficient core designs, and compact spaces to create a more intimate and residential environment. GRAND FALLS | NEWFOUNDLAND | CANADA

THE DESIGN OF AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF ASTRONOMY & ASTRO-TOURISM CENTRE Architecture represents the symbiotic relationship between earth, man and the sky. The dissertation explores these connections in a Cosmic Landscape. The proposed facility is situated at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Sutherland. It is nested within the South-west-embankment of the mountain, currently hosting the Southern Africa Large Telescope (SALT). The resultant design takes on a linear building typology with radial aspects to document astronomical events. The project investigates the semiarid Karoo climate and how the resultant architecture reacts to harsh environmental conditions. SUTHERLAND, KAROO, NORTHERN CAPE 19 250m²

THESIS: AN ASTRONOMICAL CENTRE

FRAMING COSMIC EVENTS The built artefact is explored as a “telescope”, bringing astronomical objects from the Cosmic Dome to the foreground. The concept was inspired by an Axis Mundi and the way in which the horizontal planes (geographical poles) intersect with the vertical (celestial poles). The proposed design allows for interaction between the spatial form and the Cosmic Landscape

MAPPING THE COSMIC LANDSCAPE The proposed site is placed within the Cosmic Envelope, creating a new landscape in which the design proposal will interact. The Cosmic Landscape was explored using 2D spatial parameters to gain a greater understanding of the interaction between the Cosmic Dome and the proposed site. The expected positions of solstices, equinoxes and star activities, in relation to the site, were intended to determine the viewing from within the building. The first study investigated the movement of stars and planets across the Cosmic Dome.

MUSEUM COMPONENT

6TH YEAR DESIGN

SITE & A SENSITIVE LANDSCAPE The building form follows the natural contour lines of the mountain. Detailed floor plan design of the museum component. No weather line present in proposed building. Exposed plenum levels and natural landscape within the building help continue the landscape from the outside. Public Circulation is regarded as a journey that creates curiosity and narrates the exhibitions within the building.

THESIS: AN ASTRONOMICAL CENTRE

PORTION OF GROUND FLOOR PLAN

SOLAR/WIND CHIMNEYS Solar and wind chimneys are used to assist in cooling the building through the plenum level and aid in ventilation within deeper recessed spaces in the design. Using the stack ventilation method, openings below and above create air pressure differences that allow for air currents to flow through the building. Warm air that rises is extracted through an exhaust above ground, while cooler, outside air is funneled through the plenum and openings on the western façade.

GEOTHERMAL HEATING MODERN HYPOCAUST SYSTEM: Geothermal heat pumps are used in the winter months to assist in warming the building. During winter, the plenum discharges the water and closes up. Once air is heated up through the geothermal heat pump, it is distributed into the plenum level and heats the building up from below. This technique is based on the Roman hypocaust system. The geothermal pipes are to be laid at a minimum depth of 4m.

WATER HARVESTING Rain and melted snow from the roof and landscape will be collected, filtered and stored in tanks within the building. Grey water in the building is also to be filtered and re-used. Water discharged from the plenums will assist where possible to supplement the use of the borehole water on site. Water flowing in the plenum level is to filtered and pumped back up to create a loop system where the water is always in motion. This eliminates the threat of bacteria and fungi growing in motionless water.

6TH YEAR DESIGN

REACTION TO CLIMATE AND SITE Passive design systems were incorporated as an extension of the building complex. The introduction of radiant cooling and heating assists in achieving a more temperate indoor climate. Using water and geothermal heat pumps, the building is able to adapt to climatic changes with minimal use of energy. The western façade is designed as an extended or deep skin to mediate solar radiation. The design, as has been emphasised, should also take into account the light sensitive telescopes and ensure that minimal artificial light escapes the building at night.

3D SECTION OF PROPOSED DESIGN - CROSS SECTION

6TH YEAR DESIGN

TO CONNECT TO THE COSMOS The aim of this dissertation was to design a School of Astronomy in such a manner as to pay homage to the ancient civilisations that documented our night sky while introducing modern functionality to the building. The Cosmic Landscape in which the design finds itself, allowed for architecture that complemented the natural elements. By exploring massing and natural building materials, the building establishes itself within the landscape and creates the illusion that it has stood there for epochs. This is further emphasised by architecture that frames certain astronomical events.

6TH YEAR DESIGN

THE DESIGN OF A NUCLEAR SKYSCRAPER POWER PLANT The brief called for a radical skyscraper design which would not only establish pretoria’s highrise hub but would also address crutial economical and evironmental issues. The proposal was to harness the power of depleted urianium from the Koeberg nuclear power station in order to create re-cycled nuclear energy for pretoria - in a time where national blackouts were common due to a shortage of power production.

PRETORIA WEST | GAUTENG 3000m²

RE - “about regarding, with reference to” The concept is a play on the letters “RE”, meaning “what is it about”. RE act as a guideline towards the design, and what it aims to achieve. The design aims to archieve several “RE” elements: RE-USE RE-CLAIM RE-COVER RE-PROCESS RE-COMFIGURE RE-ACT

CONCEPTUAL: SKYSCRAPER

0-00 SITE The site aims to open up and join the urban fabric by linking together with other proposed skryscrapers, thus enhancing the overall urban experience. Furthermore the site blurs the realm of public and private spaces when it comes to industrial building types, allowing for more public an pedestrian participation. In essence the site forms part of the urban rejuvenation scheme, bridging the isolated site to the greater Pretoria West.

SITE CONTEXT PLAN

5TH YEAR DESIGN

This allows the city to acces the lake as a source of water and relaxation. by doing so, the site exposes itself to its historical and heritage quality to the urban environment.

STRUCTURE The propsed design structure is based on the Tomigaya Exhibition Building, Tokyo - Japan, done by Richard Rogers. the structure consissts of two main cores; One steel frame support strucutre and one steel mast. These two cores are then joined with one other by a series of girder trusses whcih in turn carries the floor slabs. The entire structure is then braced together by a massive tensioning cable spanning from the mast towards the back support structure.

2013

CONCEPTUAL: SKYSCRAPER

0-001 WIND The proposed design is cooled by using the wind shafts on the side of the building. wind is pushed down into an ice room, where the air is cooled naturally. Decondary pipes with extractor turbines on the top of the tower draw air out of the ice room, allowing the cool air to be distributed through the proposed building

0-002 WATER To harness the solar energy generated from the ETFE panels, water is pumped up the building and then released againt o ensure that energy is kept in a closed system. This allows the elimination of a battery system for energy storage. this system is also used in several skyscrapers and solar power plants.

0-003 NUCLEAR Depleted uranium 238 is dropped in a battery container down the drop shaft within the building. Once it reaches the reactor, the battery container is dropped into the reactor core. energy is then generator through nuclear fusion. the energy is transported back up to the turbine rooms, which converts the energy into electricity.

0-06 ENERGY GENERATION The building uses several natuiral ways of generating its own power, this is done to assist the energy needed to start the fission reaction. it also elevates some of the stress caused on the ESKOM grid when fission takes place. These elements are listed below: - Solar panels - etfe panels - Wind energy - Hydroelectricity Natural ventilation is also achieved by using the excess wind energy to cool the building down by passing the air through a freezing room.

RE [SCRIPT] “Useless architecture – give presence to that suppressed human need to be loved for what you are, and not for what you perform.” – Emil Sotirov Hybrid architecture occurs at the point of intersection between two ideas. At the intersection there are three possible outcomes: Displacement – one idea, placed within another to create tension. Reaction – two ideas respond to each other – symbiotic relationship emerges. Fusion – two ideas merge completely and becomes a new idea with different characteristics from either of its current ideas. The physical structure provided a frame in which spontaneous activities, events and interpretations could evolve.

“Hybrid spaces exist where a designed frame accommodates the evolution of a spontaneous growth. The resulting space is a hybrid of an architectural concept and the events that occur within it.” – Nathan Su As, 2012 CBD | JOHANNESBURG 1000m²

CONTEXT CONTRAST The strip aims to link the two seamingly different zones with the high energy of pedestrian life it contains. By doing so, the strip aims to expose “live” and “dead” zones between these two sites, allowing pedetrians and everyday walkers to experience a new feeling within their city.

4TH YEAR DESIGN

REACTION TO AN URBAN CONTEXT It is a proposal that reacts to the current division within Johannesburg. It stitches energy pockets together with lost spaces in the city. The visual strip becomes more user-friendly through providing seating, roof cover, informal market space and a sculptural element which links with the existing linear markets in a visual and functional manner.

2012

DES BAKER COMPETITION

RESPONSE TO CITY The design will utilize the CBD of Johannesburg as the script. The everyday activities and movement of pedestrians will serve as the ‘story’ within the script. Key sites were chosen to represent each plot point. By doing so, we create a strip that stitches the city together similar to a movie. Johannesburg becomes the canvas of [re-script]. The strip would then link the intriguing key sites with each other. The strip would expose the cityscape to the pedestrian by introducing a new experience.

4TH YEAR DESIGN

CONVENTION CENTRE PRECINCT The brief called for the design of a international convention centre and hotel for CBD Pretoria in the aim to rejuvenate the inner city. The two designs should be linked in someway, allowing visitors to easily orientate themselves to and from the hotel ond convention centre. Futher, the designs should address large scale urban issues, and contextualise itself within its surrounds. The design should aim to nest itself within the urban grid.creating a beat that would reactivate the city. CBD | PRETORIA | SOUTH AFRICA 16 000m²

MASSING DEVELOPMENT A vertical element was introduced to identify with the large scale skyscrapers located in the immediate context. Acting as a large observation tower, the tower would be roughly 20 stories high and would help contextualise the building within the context it finds itself. The tower would help claim the ICC block by having a scale wise conncetion with the National Reserve Bank and the ABSA building. This invisible triangle formed by these 3 towers would help claim the 4 block strip in which the ICC is situated.

URBAN: : ICC PROPOSAL

CONCEPT & APPROACH The concept of the design revolved around the large scale urban intervention by acting as a beacon of energy within the city grid. By means of clever form manipulatian the design aims ta address streetscape and create integrated spaces within the building. A key goal for the Convention Centre is to improve the quality of the city grid in the eastern part of CBD Pretoria by accentuating pedestrian traffic. The design would not only act as a place where energy gathers, but a source for energy disbursement within the inner city.
