Discover “Through studying Carey’s Bachelor of Applied Theology and through the Pastoral Leadership training, I have been taught how to think critically about the intersection of life and faith, and how it plays out in different contexts. At Carey you learn the skills needed to critique the world around you and your assumptions about it. You aren’t just getting a degree; you are discovering and learning how to love God, love others, and how to truly live out your faith!” Lindy Jacomb - STUDENT

“
I love the excitement of sitting down with prospective students to talk about training options at Carey.
”
There are four things I am keen prospective students understand. Firstly, they will be superbly trained. Their curriculum and training experiences will be relevant and focused on the things that will best prepare them to achieve the call God has placed on their lives. Carey lecturers will be both leaders in their fields academically and cuttingedge practitioners doing the stuff they are teaching. We pray that our graduates will be leaders, thinkers, and risk-takers; people who are innovative, globally aware, outward looking, and very God-dependent! Secondly, they will make a difference. A theological education at Carey will give you a healthy dissatisfaction with the status quo. As you develop God’s call on your life you will be encouraged to imagine, to stand up and say, “It will be different!” I keep saying, “It’s not by chance that you have arrived at Carey.” Students will be encouraged to find the answer to, “Why has God brought me here? What does he want me to do?” We pray that one of our graduates might be the next William Wilberforce, Dietrich
Learning in isolation is not really an option at Carey. God uses the relationships we develop with one another to form us, grow us, and challenge us – staff included! As Principal, not a day would go by without me being challenged or inspired in my thinking and behaviour by a Carey student. And even more, you will take this community with you into your ministry and mission — the friendships formed at Carey will never stop journeying with you! Fourthly, they will know Jesus in a deeper way. If the purpose of education at Carey is to just fill students with head knowledge, and to provide them with the right diploma or degree, then we will be letting them down enormously. Although the academic is vital, we should never lose sight that our purpose must be the same as that of the Apostle Paul’s in Philippians 3…knowing Jesus Christ my Lord…gaining Christ and being found in him…to know Christ and the power of his resurrection…becoming like him. We pray that our graduates might consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord. As Principal of Carey I am always keen to hear from our prospective students, so if you want to chat with me about studying at Carey please feel free to email me: charles.hewlett@carey.ac.nz Regards

Studying at Carey Carey Baptist College strives to offer the most accessible study possible. Courses are available to students using a variety of delivery modes. Students are encouraged to choose the modes that suit their particular needs. Currently the following modes of delivery are used: ONSITE CLASSES Most courses are offered at our campus in Penrose (Auckland). These are timetabled in weekly 3-hour classes over 12 weeks of the 17-week semester. A number of these courses are offered as evening classes, making them accessible for students in full-time employment. DISTANCE COURSES Many courses that Carey offers are available by distance learning. Distance learning means that students can be located anywhere around New Zealand or the world but still study through Carey. BLOCK COURSES A number of block or intensive courses are offered each year. These are held either at the Auckland campus or at various locations throughout New Zealand and are usually either one five day block or two blocks of two or three days. FIELD EDUCATION Some courses are practical-based field education courses. The requirements of these courses are completed in the student’s local place of ministry under the guidance of a nominated supervisor. FULL-TIME STUDY Students can study full-time towards any Carey qualification. Full-time study allows students to combine on-site classes, distance and block courses to provide a highly customisable study programme to suit their individual needs. PART-TIME STUDY Students can study part-time towards any Carey qualification. Part-time study enables students to combine study with other commitments such as employment, family and church life. Part-time students can combine on-site classes, distance and block courses for a study programme that will meet their own needs.

Marketplace Applied theology Carey’s qualifications in Applied Theology are all intentionally designed to equip people for living out their faith in the marketplace. Flexible study options are designed to help those working full-time. Examples of marketplace related courses include: Marketplace Christianity, Organisational Leadership, Applied Christian Ethics, and Understanding and Interrogating Culture. Vocation Vocation is a new course that will show you the purpose of work in God’s world, and equip you to know how work can be carried out in a distinctively Christian way. For many Christians, work is a burden they bear out of necessity, which often feels disconnected from their Christian life and church on Sunday. But work has intrinsic value in God’s sight, and we want students to discover that value for themselves. Work can be more than just a job, more than just a setting for evangelism, and more than just a source of income. Students will learn a well-rounded theology of work and the importance of work within the Christian church. Vocation is available both onsite or by distance. www.vocation.ac.nz

Take the Next Step. Discover. “When I started my journey of theological study, I chose Carey because a very reputable colleague advised it was ‘the only place to go.’ Emerging from a scientific background and being a lifelong learner, I am now completing my Master of Applied Theology. The staff at Carey are approachable and of international standing and the work environment is one conducive to study, developing lifelong friendships, as well as academic rigour. Carey has been, and will continue to be my preferred environment for excellent biblical, theological and ministry training.” Antony Horacek-Glading
“Postgraduate research has been a challenging and rewarding process. I thought I was going to be too busy for it, but the programme is quite flexible. Many of the courses are over the whole year including block courses, which is really helpful in fitting them around, and applying them to my work as a Pastor. My focus has been on the relationship between worship and mission, and I’ve particularly appreciated the way I was able to use the Missional Theology course (taught by Dr. Darrell Guder) to explore and sharpen the questions I had. I have found Carey to be a place of holistic formation, and feel so grateful to be here.” Dale Campbell
“Studying at Carey has been a blessing and a dream come true for me. I am currently studying for a Master of Applied Theology. Recently I have undertaken research on why churches are declining in rural New Zealand. The journey has been fascinating and full of discovery. At the commencement of my study, I was very nervous, but the lecturers, librarians and my fellow students put me at ease. The support and encouragement from Carey has motivated me to fulfill my dreams. I’ve been a Christian a long time, but my studies at Carey opened my mind to clearly understand the scriptures like never before. I feel that Carey has helped me discover my purpose in life.” Rohini Paul
“My decision to pursue postgraduate studies was a result of continual encouragement from family and the Carey faculty, who recognise and nurture the potential in students. I’m so thankful God places influential people in my walk of faith or I may have missed this opportunity to further explore his Word. Stepping up to this level of study was daunting, but the experience so far has been enriching and life changing, and I’m looking forward to researching a thesis topic soon. I highly value Carey’s intentionality in preparing courses for students to be not only equipped with knowledge but challenged to articulate their learning in practical and impacting ways.” Robert Ifopo
