AUGUST 2018

INTRODUCTION BY COTY

R

eturn to Freedom is a national non-profit wild horse conservation organization. Return to Freedom operates the American Wild Horse Sanctuary which currently provides refuge to over 500 wild mustangs including 42 burros. Neda DeMayo is the founder and director. It was an exciting for me to go to their Lompoc location and photograph many of their horses. They have two other locations, one in San Luis Obispo and leased pasture in Northern California. Spirit is a Kiger Mustang stallion who was the muse for DreamWorks 2002 animated feature film, Spirit: Stallon of the Cimarron. Written by John Fusco, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for best animated feature, and had a host of other tributes. I went to see it and then I also bought the movie when it came out on video. That’s how long ago it was, when things were still on video, it’s now also available on DVD. I rewatched it last night, and it was even more precious after having met the stallion whose beauty and movement inspired the animators!

T

he Kiger Mustangs through genetic testing have proven to be descendants of the Spanish horses. The herd is still active in the state of Oregon. My tour guide was a young lady named Paloma. We visited several herd groups and each one produce some memorable photos. I first photographed Spirit, he is handsome, smart, and sweet. I was delighted when he came over so I could pet him! Then we went to photograph the Hart Mountain group that had three stallions and each had their own individual harem band of mares.

AUGUST 2018

One of the stallions decided to sprawl out and take a nap in the sun, so I quickly captured his image with the other horses standing around munching on hay.

I

wanted to photograph the disabled and elderly horses and again they gave me their own precious images to share.

Sundancer has a misshaped hoof but in spite of this came walking over so that I could pet and greet this precious horse. I also snapped Sundancer in a roll and it made me smile when this lovely horse popped up his head and stuck up both hind legs straight up in the air! Then we were off to the Sulphur Springs HMA herd with two stallions, a small gruella named Bear and his mares and Chief and his mares. They each have their separate pastures and they were all beautiful equus models. If you notice in Bear’s herd a mare that looks a lot like Spirit, that’s because it’s Spirit’s daughter, Bonita. According to my research, the Sulfur Springs Herd is a very special herd, some of the purest descendants of a genetic line tracing back to the steeds of the Spanish conquistadors. The Spanish explorers in the late 1500s brought their horses to our country. The herd is still active in the state of Utah.

T

hey vary from various shades of dun to a gruella or grey/silver mouse coloring, their ears curve in like a birds beak, insides trimmed in black, some of them have bicolored manes and tiger striped legs, many have a dorsal stripe down their backs and their backs are a little shorter because they have five lumbar vertebrae instead of six as other horse breeds. Chief, is the perfect name for him, his striking chiseled face full of wisdom reminds me of an Indian chief. He munches scraps off the ground, never pausing during his grazing.

WAYS TO HELP RETURN TO FREEDOM • DONATE: Support Return to Freedom’s work, both in caring for over 500 wild horses and burros at its American Wild Horse Sanctuary and its satellites and in advocating for wild horses and burros on the range and in government holding. Sustain Return to Freedom’s work by making a monthly donation to Sponsor a resident Wild Horse or Burro, Sponsor a Hay Bale, or Become a Member. Include us in your Planned Giving, or Give to our Wild Horse Defense Fund, which fuels our advocacy, selective litigation, and monitoring of roundups. Visit returntofreedom.org/donate.

Yet, he constantly looks me directly in the eye and in the lens of my camera and connects in a soul-tosoul way that absolutely creates a lifelong memory for me. I have one picture where I’m focused on his mane, to the right you can see his branded mark left by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) when they rounded him up from the wild. But if you look at those precious eyes of his, even then, he’s looking up towards me.

• SHOP: Shopping at Return to Freedom’s onsite

or online store which offers apparel, home goods, jewelry and more, means that you are not only supporting wild horses, but companies who promote the preservation of open spaces and support our love of all things wild and free. Peruse the selection at returntofreedom.org/store. Supporters can also choose to make Return to Freedom their charity of choice through smile.amazon.com.

C

hief is communicating, he’s friendly, he doesn’t feel guarded or threatened, he seems to be happy to enjoy my company, which is a blessing beyond what I can articulate. Just look at the pictures that I captured of him. His face and his eyes, his focus, his concentration, he is majestic!

• ADVOCATE: Return to Freedom seeks to provide

information and educational programs, including webinars on topics ranging from current legislation to the history of America’s burros, which allow people of all ages to find their own voice as wild horse and burro advocates. To receive action alerts as well as news about the sanctuary, subscribe at https:// returntofreedom.org/subscribe/ and follow RTF on Facebook or Twitter.

The mares are willing to come over and say hello so I can pet them, considering these used to be wild horses, I think that that is such a lovely compliment that they can pay to us. The one hesitant mare is Ruby, she is Chief’s lead mare. Paloma explains that she doesn’t think Ruby has ever recovered from the roundup and what they went through. Ruby doesn’t come anywhere near us, but neither does she run, she just moves the mares around towards Chief and keeps her distance.

• VISIT: Return to Freedom’s American Wild Horse

Sanctuary hosts experiential education programs during the summer months, including tours, photo safaris, Youth & Family Days and special workshops. In the past, these have included photography, natural horsemanship and special subjects like reiki. Private photo safaris and tours are also available by arrangement. Proceeds benefit RTF’s resident wild horses and burros, as well as advocacy on behalf of wild horses and burros on the range. https://returntofreedom.org/visit/

One of my favorite photographs is Chief staring at me with Ruby behind him. Ears popped up, standing behind her stallion mate.

Sea Lion Proven in top competition, Sea Lion is a 1998, 16.1hh, Jockey Clubregistered Thoroughbred by Sea Salute out of Ivory Today (Caveat). In July 2015, Sea Lion was approved by the American Hanoverian Society. The judges believe Sea Lion’s score may be the highest ever awarded to a thoroughbred, and confirmed their opinion by inviting the dark bay stallion to stand at stud in Germany for a season. Under owner Pam Fisher, Sea Lion competed successfully in twenty-one international eventing competitions, including fifteen at the 3* level, and was Regional Advanced Champion and USEF/ PHR National Advanced Champion. In 2013 Sea Lion retired sound from eventing to begin his breeding career - while continuing to demonstrate his versatility competing in jumpers and hunters. Ad: Freestyle Graphic Design

Sea Lion’s crowning attribute is his temperament. Owner Pam Fisher attributes her success in tough competition to Sea Lion’s “confidence-building” personality.

Sea Lion’s stud fee is $1500 LFG Approved AHS, HV, ATA ISR/Oldenburg, AQHA
