EDGE
THE
INTRO
Welcome to the first incarnation of Falmouth Illustration’s new student catalogue! Having published our well known ‘Wunderkammer’ Graduate catalogue since 2016 we felt it was the right time to shift the theme of this year’s book. The origins of the new theme stem from an important project that 2nd year students have worked on for many years… ‘The Edge’.
Why ‘The Edge’? Such a theme is laden with metaphorical and literal potential. It might encourage us to consider the next step in our lives or career with either excited anticipation or, perhaps, nervous trepidation. As the world in which we live rapidly evolves, the theme of ‘The Edge’ feels increasingly appropriate. It might suggest environmental or technological change, or the crossing of boundaries, both physical or perhaps psychological. For an illustrator such a theme is a perfect visual challenge that will showcase their conceptual skills and stretch their visual language.
These are the challenges that the BA Illustration course at Falmouth relishes. A core objective of the course has always been to nurture the development of ideas generation alongside the evolution of a unique visual language. Central to the course’s philosophy is a desire to remain contemporary and relevant within an industry that is constantly evolving. We hope you enjoy the first edition of ‘The Edge’.

WILLIAM THOMAS
Our protagonist wanders into a strangely beautiful but terrifying scene. Before him nature has been replaced with trees and towering flowers of gold, leeching the landscape of all its life and colour in favour of cold marble. Some things that were once people stumble towards him, their bodies stone and gold. The protagonist stands on the edge of life and death, the natural and the unknown.

The edge is where the land meets the sea as owls call to James Rielly. As bold as the waves and as free as a bird, he keeps a lighthouse lit in dreary turns. He smokes his pipe and raises his arm, a perch for a friend in storms so strong. The moon shines bright and the candle shines brighter, but no light brighter than Daidi, the lighthouse keeper.
