EEF TECHNOLOGY CENTRE TRAINING NEWS

APPRENTICE IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS ISSUE GEMMA FLETCHER Gemma Fletcher is 17 years old and has recently started her Engineering Apprentice training, here at the EEF Technology Centre and is employed by Goodrich Actuation Systems. Gemma travels from Wolverhampton by train to the centre each day and enjoys the camaraderie of other apprentices travelling back and forwards to the centre. Gemma is working towards her Apprenticeship in Advanced Engineering that incorporates NVQ’s levels 2 & 3, Key Skills and a Technical Certificate. One of only two female apprentices at the centre this year, Gemma enjoys the competition at the centre and aims to achieve good results in all sections that she works on. Having attended Dormston School in Dudley, Gemma left school with B – C grades in English Language & Literature, Maths, Double Science, ICT, History, Citizenship, Child Development, R.E and Drama – which have helped her secure her position here at the centre and her employment with Goodrich.

manufacturing and it is this experience that he uses to good use to teach the apprentices of today. John says, “Students must have a willingness to learn, and a sense of curiosity that makes them want to find out about things, and why and how they work. A good positive attitude is paramount as this indicates whether or not a student will progress well”. John is due to retire September 2009, and he is looking forward to the time when he can tinker about in his garage, mending gadgets that he has not got round to and to continue delivering private training courses on a parttime basis for the EEF Technology Centre.

Staff use their knowledge to make lessons interesting and participative. Learners enjoy the ‘off the job’ training and find it to be very stimulating ALI Report

NATIONAL QUALITY MARK FOR EEF TECHNOLOGY CENTRE

EEF Technology Centre has been accredited with the nationally recognised quality mark for organisations that provide support to individuals to make learning and work more accessible – the matrix Standard. As a specialist Work Based Learning provider, our aims are to help learners fulfill their potential and experience through an industrial/educational environment, which responds to individual needs and stimulates and challenges each and every learner. Working with over 500 candidates, we wanted to ensure that these learners were receiving the best information, advice and guidance (IAG) possible, and as an organisation, we decided that the matrix standard would help us to reinforce our already existing systems and processes. Commenting, Graham Cowan – Quality Manager said: “EEF Technology Centre first engaged with the matrix standard in 2007 when senior managers at the centre signed a commitment to work towards the matrix Standard. Since signing that commitment we have gone through a number of changes in the way we work to embed the provision of IAG within the whole ethos of the centre. This has made us more focused on our learners and better able to work with our partners in our Work Based Learning provision.”

WELCOME TO ADRIAN KNIGHT Who joined the EEF Technology Centre in January as a Bench/Welding Instructor. His appointment adds valuable welding skills to the centre’s portfolio
