CervÊlo engineers bikes that are second only to our imagination As a bicycle company founded and driven by engineers, we’re always testing new ideas and technologies. So when we want to deliver the lightest, stiffest, fastest bikes anywhere, we start with the toughest benchmarks in the industry. Our own.

weight, stiffness, aero, comfort and simplicity. As engineers, we are always questioning how to reach the Change the dimension of one parameter and what effect does it have on the others? What effect does it have performance? With our Concurrent Aero and Structural Engineering (CASE) process, we can focus the skills and efforts of an entire team’s worth of engineering disciplines on getting all the details exactly right for every design. The bottom line is simple. You go faster. For aerodynamics, for precision, for structural engineering and testing, athletes, the cycling press, and even our own competitors agree that CervÊlo sets the worldwide bar for performance. And we do it by combining our engineering and testing processes with continuous feedback from pro riders to develop the best possible bikes for our customers. But every bike company makes that claim. So don’t take our word for it. Just see the results for yourself. It’s a difference you can see in the RCA, the world’s lightest frameset. In the P5, named the world’s fastest superbike by Tour magazine. And in the S5, too, named Editors’ Choice, Best Aero Road bike by Bicycling Magazine.

AERO ENGINEERING Drag = ½ ČĄV2 (CdA) ČĄ= Air Density V2 = Velocity Squared Cd ; < % ; $ Aero drag is 80-90% of a cyclist’s overall resistance. As bicycle engineers, we can’t change most of the parameters affecting drag. In fact, the only parameters we can control are tube shape and frontal area. This means we focus on maximizing aero advantage wherever we can in every step of our engineering process. We begin development by brainstorming hundreds of ideas based on aeronautical principals and engineering R&D. The most promising ideas advance to a virtual CAD model, where aero performance can be simulated in Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). The best of the best are then produced as physical prototypes and tested in the wind tunnel with our friend Foam Dave. Then the process is repeated for every part of the bike: seat tube, seatpost, fork, top of the downtube, bottom of the downtube, etc. And we choose the combination of those options that result in the fastest bike possible. We also have to consider the three-dimensional space surrounding the bike and rider, including the downstream ( " )

PROJECTCALIFORNIA While other companies subcontract outsiders to develop their leading-edge bikes, CervÊlo has developed its people and talent and technologies internally. As an engineering company dedicated to making all our riders go faster, we know that we get the bring talent and expertise inside the company. And keep it there. In 2008 CervÊlo began an ambitious engineering project in California to push the composites R&D envelope. This facility is where we prove our leadership in innovating faster, stiffer, lighter and stronger bikes. And it’s where we create new manufacturing [

analysis software. In 2010 we launched the R5ca, 100 grams lighter than its nearest competitor and 30% stiffer. In 2013 we raised the bar again with the RCA: almost 100 grams lighter than the R5ca, equal stiffness‌and now aero too.

CASE: Concurrent Aero and Structural Engineering Before the RCA, our aero and structural engineering were quite separate. Our R-series prioritized lightweight design and stiffness over all else. At the same time our S-Series had a laser focus on . Of course all of our bikes had to be stiff, comfortable, and go through the air effectively. But each series had either pure structural performance or pure aero performance at the top of the priority list. This project scope statement of each CervÊlo frame. The other elements (such as comfort and simplicity) were assigned a rank after this priority. . With the RCA, all of our engineering tools were used simultaneously. This isn’t new in the bike industry (aero bikes still have to pass structural tests, after all). What’s different about CervÊlo is that we had already the world’s lightest bike (then the R5ca) and most aero bike (the S5) – so we also had extremely mature engineering tools in each category. It was a simple decision to apply them concurrently in the RCA. As industry leaders in light weight, stiffness, and aero engineering, every CervÊlo most advanced Project California frames. For example, the new R5 begins the transition of our R-series to Squoval 3TM tube shapes, for the ultimate in lightweight and aero design.

PRO ROAD All CervÊlo models are engineered to race at the highest level _ Championships, Grand Tours. And as always, the pros ride the same frame you do: the bikes at your local shops are exactly the same as the ones our teams ride to major wins. (Only less battered, of course.) CervÊlo is proud to power riders from Team Garmin-Sharp to World Tour podiums, including victories at LiÊge-Bastogne-LiÊge, and stage wins at the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and the AMGEN Tour of California, among others. Our pro riders also help you go faster because their feedback goes directly to our engineering team. That’s why there are teams of CervÊlo engineers at all the big races: our riders rate our bikes based on the same categories that we use to engineer them: aero, weight, stiffness, comfort and simplicity. And the results show up in subsequent CervÊlo generations.

Dan Martin, Team Garmin-Sharp, Liege-Bastonge-Liege, 2013

How much power can you save riding an RCA? The reduction in aero drag means the other road bikes require more power for the same speed. The new RCA saves at least 26 grams of drag, equivalent to 2.6 Watts at 40 km/h (25 mph) to up to 102 grams against the competition. Project scope: Not only does the RCA need to offer higher stiffness at a lower weight, but it employs revised frame shapes to offer reduction in aerodynamic drag, meets contemporary equipment requirements (internal routing, larger tire sizes; electronic, mechanical and hydraulic shift/brake options), and provides more enhanced road feel and comfort to the rider. At our Project California engineering facility, our unwavering obsession with every single detail + from cable routing to bulkheads + allows us to continually raise the performance bar. Project scope: The R5 fameset will be the production version of the R CA, and will share Squoval 3 TM shapes to improve aerodynamics and stiffness. The new R5 brings our RCA engineering into our regular lineup. With our new Squoval 3TM tube shapes, aero meets ultimate lightweight design. The Squoval 3TM frame shape reduces aero drag by a whopping 74 grams (equivalent to 7.4 Watts) compared to second-generation SquovalTM frames, without giving up any stiffness or gaining any weight. Sure-footed riding is assured with clearance for 700 x 25c tires. Climbing and cutting through the wind with ease are matched with excellent stability and control.

Project scope: road racing bicycle. The S5VWD shares the shapes of the S5, but ! and stiffer platform. Winner of Bicycling Magazine’s Editors’ Choice award in 2012 for Best Aero Road Bike, the S5VWD currently sits at the top of the aero category. Project scope: The S2 provides an entry into the world of Aero ' 8!' 87 $ ' When we ask our pro riders about their favourite rides, the most common answer is a long ride with friends over fairly dramatic terrain: some steep climbs, a few group sprints, and a descent that almost steals your breath. They also mention the ideal bike for that ride: something stiff, comfortable, reliable, and of course, fast. These pros often choose the S2. If that sounds like your ideal weekend ride, the S2’s race geometry and renowned comfort may have you looking for some new competition.

SIMPLY FASTER

The P5 features truncated airfoils behind the seat tube and seatpost. While this appears counterintuitive, it actually offers a distinct aero advantage. How? Testing on the frame alone shows that the truncated airfoils indeed lead to the expected aero penalty. But when we test the P5 with a rider on the frame, the low-pressure drag created by the truncation " # $ advantage for the bike-and-rider system. The aero gain far outweighs the aero penalty. This demonstrates how essential it is to consider real-world riding conditions when evaluating aerodynamics claims.
