RIDING CLUB

Clyde Branch Shows The Clyde Riding Club has been on the go for over 50 years now. We are based at Lower Carbarns Farm courtesy of Mr and Mrs Brian Jordan and run 11 competitive days between April and September. Each day has two jumping classes and four games and the classes are determined by height of pony and age of rider. We have classes for juniors with simple cross poles and go right up to horse classes at about 80-90cm. Lead reins can have some fun at games. We are one of the few places where riders over 16 on ponies can compete in their own class and we have introduced an HC class with jump offs for any rider, any age, any size mount at 60-70cm to let the less experienced or less brave still have a good competition. We have rosettes for each daily event. The end of the season sees us handing out a huge array of trophies, keepsakes and rosettes. The Clyde Riding Club is possibly the best value club you

West Kype hold successful demo British Show Jumping Lanarkshire Area in conjunction with Pony Academy held their first event in the form of a very successful demonstration, over 150 people attended West Kype Farm, Strathaven to hear Mark McGowan International Course Designer, talk through and demonstrate building a course, walking a course then have riders demonstrate the problems and technicalities and how best to ride them. HOYS winner 2011, BS Accredited Level 3 Coach Aileen Craig along with Trevor Nicholson jumped and compared two younger horses with two or their more experienced competition rides over Mark’s tracks, interacting with the audience, allowing everyone to learn from their experience. Advice and techniques to ride and build courses at all levels of competition from Pony Club to HOYS were discussed.

New practical first aid session dates announced After the success of the inaugural practical first aid talk, held in September 2011, Loch Leven Equine Practice are launching a series of useful hands-on sessions throughout 2012.The first two sessions are set to take place on Friday 2 March from 12.30pm-2.30pm and Saturday 3 March from 10am-12noon and each session is open to both clients and non-clients. The first aid courses are hosted by our qualified equine vet nurse, Lynsey McKay who says, “It’s a very friendly interactive hands-on course which covers all basic first aid from taking pulses to bandaging correctly. We will also look at the structures of the lower leg, where and what to look for when assessing lameness and how to deal with different emergency situations.” The first two courses will take place at the Loch Leven Equine Practice, near Kinross. Refreshments will be provided and tickets are priced at just £10 per person. Places are limited to 12 per session so book early to avoid disappointment. For more information visit www.lochlevenequine.co.uk and to get your ticket call the office on 01577 840 022. 6 | Scottish & Northern Equestrian | March 2012

Cumbrian event cancels 2012 fixture Regrettably, the Cumwhinton British Eventing Horse Trials at Murray House near Carlisle will not run this year. The event scheduled to run in June 2012 will not be possible due to the current upgrading of the equestrian facilities on the farm. The organiser, Peter Bainbridge commented that, “We fully expect Cumwhinton to be back in the calendar for 2013, and hope it will have a new layout that will realise the full potential of the venue.”

LORRY MAINTENANCE

The welfare and well-being of your horse is important to you. With high quality stabling and the best possible veterinary care you can ensure your horse is comfortable and healthy, but what happens when you are on the move? How safe is your horsebox? Having your horsebox properly and regularly serviced by a qualified mechanic will help to make sure it is maintained to a roadworthy condition.

Make sure your horsebox is loaded when you bring it to the test station so the brakes can be checked for maximum efficiency. Use heavy items such as bags of feed or fertiliser or even straw bales, as long as it is not livestock. Listed below are some of the most common reasons vehicles fail the annual MOT test and details of some fortnightly checks which you can carry out yourself. Keeping your vehicle in a garage will help. • STEERING MECHANISM • HEADLIGHTS AND LAMPS

Annual MOT Test

• PARKING BRAKE Check you have a plating certificate (VTG 6) displayed somewhere in the cab and another copy for your records (VTG 7). Remember that both must be presented at the annual MOT test. If your vehicle has a gross weight in excess of 7.5 tonnes you must use a tachograph at all times, which includes driving to the MOT test station. You must make sure that all the seals are intact, and that the tachograph has been initially / periodically calibrated and is fitted with both the calibration and K factor plaques.

• WHEELS AND TYRES • FUEL SYSTEMS • REFLECTORS • SUSPENSION • SERVICE AND SECONDARY BRAKES
