30 YEARS OF GTA
30 YEARS OF TRADE FACILITATION
CHAIR MESSAGE trade portfolios. Trade and market access, Non-Tariff Measures, grain protection, storage and handling and many more activities, underpin GTA's core business in 2022 of facilitating trade for the benefit of GTA members and the Australian grain supply chain.
It is with great honor and pride that I welcome you all to the 30-year celebrations for Grain Trade Australia. I have been very lucky and proud to have been a foundation member of NACMA WA and associated with Grain Trade Australia for more years than I'd like to think about.
We now have a much greater focus on members whose businesses are in the domestic trade with the establishment of the Domestic Sector Council that sits alongside the Australian Grain Exporters Council.
30 years for any organisation is a fantastic milestone, especially for a member driven, not for profit organisation such as GTA. As we say GTA does not have a right to exist, we are here for and because our members require us to be.
As the current Chair of GTA, it is abundantly clear to me just how important and relevant GTA continues to be. It has not arrived 30 years on without the significant time and effort members and others have made to this organisation.
30 years ago a group of like-minded leaders involved in the grain industry decided to establish a national umbrella organisation for grain industry participants across Australia, NACMA. Those innovative leaders decided grain trading would be more professionally executed by having a single set of grain trading standards, trade rules and grain contracts across the national supply chain.
A large contingent of members have voluntarily made themselves available for the betterment of the whole supply chain whether that be as arbitrators, committee members or technical advisors.
It has turned out this is even more relevant today than it was then. They underpin the way we all do business everyday, and almost every grain contract that is written up, will be based on the 3 core GTA products, Trading Standards, Contracts and Trade Rules.
GTA is extremely lucky to have such a cohesive, intelligent, broad-based board who all give up their time on a voluntary basis and continually question the where to from here approach on behalf of members. Along with the Board, GTA is very fortunate to have such loyal and committed Management and staff who continually put in extraordinary hours to make sure we all stay focused on the important things, which are to Facilitate and promote trade by providing products, services and advocacy for the Australian value chain. Congratulations GTA, 30 years is a fine effort.
GTA, has grown and evolved since that first meeting in March 1991 to now be the leading voice and advocacy organisation for all the 270 members who deal with grain post the farm gate. Whether that be for export, domestic usage for both human food, animal consumption or even energy generation. Geoff Honey, who we all still miss, would be so proud to have been an integral part of the 30th year celebrations. He always told me, “GTA is not a Peak Body” well, I think it has grown into be just that. GTA has had to change over the past 30 years, we are now very involved with both Federal and State Governments, and all the departments that oversee the agriculture and

CEO MESSAGE today. Geoff coined the phrase “GTA does not have a right to exist, it must continue to deliver value to its members”. This approach drives GTA's culture and “can do” attitude today, as we know GTA's reputation is dependent on delivering benefits to members and our industry.
It is very humbling to be writing this letter to acknowledge and celebrate Grain Trade Australia's 30th Anniversary. GTA through its products and services provides its members with an industry driven self-regulatory framework. We should recognise and appreciate the grain industry is mature and sophisticated enough to largely self-manage in a fair, efficient and effective manner without excessive and costly government intervention and regulation. This benefits both government and industry, particularly in an industry like the grain industry, that can be simple, but is mostly complex.
GTA is also fortunate to have and had great people, dedicated to the organisation and to industry, and especially its members and none more so than the Board, the staff and technical advisors at GTA today. We must thank and credit all the people who have volunteered their time either on the Board, through Technical Committees, Working Groups, Conferences, training and Arbitrations over 30 years. This commitment and “culture of volunteering” to benefit the industry at large, in my view is fundamental to the culture and success of GTA.
Core to the self-regulatory framework is the Australian Grain Industry Code of Practice, GTA's Grain Trading Standards, contracts and Trade Rules, that establish clear specifications and fair and balanced terms of trade.
I remain humbled at the willing support we receive from GTA members, from the CEO's of industry's largest companies to members running a small, niche grain industry business with a mobile phone and laptop. I believe our members understand that to have a successful business in the grain industry, you need a successful industry, which is by definition a group effort!
Industry's capability in these is supported by GTA's stewardship and training programs. Commercial confidence in the grain supply chain is underpinned by GTA's Dispute Resolution Service. The simple fact it is there and known to be effective, instils confidence and facilitates trade. The value of all this, while perhaps not openly apparent each day, is embedded in the businesses of every GTA member.
The grain industry has never been as solid and successful as it is today. To all the staff and volunteers from the 16th of March 1991 to today, you can be proud and are an integral part of GTA's 30 successful years and an efficient, equitable and open commercial Australian grain industry.
Crucial to the success of an organisation that survives 30 years, and in fact thrives, is great products and services, and: • strong and effective governance, • an enviable culture and reputation, and • great, engaged and committed people.
Thank you and congratulations!
Through the foresight, hard work and dedication of many, many supportive people, committed to improving their industry, GTA has all of the above. Geoff Honey, established strong governance practices and procedures in GTA that have stood the test of time and remain the cornerstone of the organisation

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Just over thirty years ago, on the 16th March 1991, an innovative group of Australian grain leaders established the National Agricultural Commodities Marketing Association (known as NACMA).
In February 2009, NACMA stepped into its next phase as it officially became Grain Trade Australia (GTA). While the governance and organisational framework may have changed, GTA’s mission and charter remained the same.
The first meeting of NACMA, in Tamworth, set out with an aim to standardise grain trading standards, trade rules and grain contracts across the Australian grain industry. Its purpose was to enable efficient facilitation of trade across the grain supply chain.
GTA became heavily involved in trade and market access committees both in Australia and overseas, as well as managing the development of Grain Trading Standards which formed the basis of trade for domestic and export contracts.
Originally an ‘association of associations’, the 1991 founding member organisations included:
Membership grew from five grain trade organisations to a national organisation with around 280 members. Technical committees were established to ensure industry deliberations were actively debated and resolved, and contact with overseas grain trade organisations continued to grow.
• Australian Grain Exporters Association • Grain and Agricultural Commodities
Association of SA • Grain and Feed Trade Association Inc • Melbourne Corn Exchange • QLD Produce Seed and Grain Merchant
GTA soon became the ‘go to’ grain organisation for many government (both State and Federal) and overseas grain related organisations. GTA also became a member of the Management Council for the International Grain Trade Coalition (IGTC), contributing to the facilitation of the commercial functions associated with global grain trade.
Association • Rural Merchant Supply Association NACMA helped put in place frameworks that assisted the Australian grain industry’s transition from the single desk to deregulation, and become the pre-eminent grain trade organisation in Australia.
4
TURNING 30 30 years on, GTA’s role remains to ensure the efficient facilitation of commercial activities across the grain supply chain.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS HUMBLE BEGINNINGS NACMA was formed on 16th March 1991 in Tamworth.
AUSTRALIAN GRAIN INDUSTRY CODE OF PRACTICE In July 2013, the Australian Grain Industry Code of Practice was published, and endorsed by the Australian Dept of Agriculture. The Code describes the quality assurance processes in the supply chain to ensure the integrity and reputation of the Australian grain supply chain, giving global customers and regulators confidence in Australian grain.
CONTRACTS AND TRADE RULES NACMA developed several standard form grain trade contracts and published standard industry Trade Rules in 1998. NACMA REGISTERED WITH ASIC In 2001, National Agricultural Commodities Marketing Association Ltd registered as a private not-for-profit company limited by guarantee with ASIC.
IGTC GTA is a founding trade association and was integral to the formal establishment of IGTC in 2014. This has enabled GTA to play a role in facilitating trade at a global level. Today, IGTC is recognised as the credible global grain trade NGO at a global level and by multilateral institutions including the IGC, WTO, FAO, World Bank.
AUSTRALIAN BULK HANDLING ASSOCIATION ENGAGEMENT In 2003, seed funding was provided by the Australian Bulk Handlers Association which allowed a full time CEO to be appointed. This helped drive the implementation of a revised business plan and its programs.
AGEC In 2018, the Australian Grain Exporters Council (AGEC) was established formalising the integration of the Australian Grain Exporters Association (AGEA) and GTA. AGEC being the inaugural Sector Council within GTA.
MEMBERSHIP GROWTH Geoff Honey joined GTA in 2003, expanding the membership base from five grain trade organisations in 2003 to a national organisation with over 260 members. NACMA JOINED IGTC In 2006, NACMA joined International Grain Trade Coalition (IGTC) establishing GTA engagement in global trade policy and its international credentials. At that stage IGTC was an informal group of like-minded global trade organisations and commercial stake holders. NACMA BECOMES GTA In 2008, members vote to change NACMA name to Grain Trade Australia (GTA). AUSTRALIAN GRAIN INDUSTRY CODE OF CONDUCT In 2009, the Australian Grain Industry Code of Conduct was published. This was a key milestone in GTA’s role in managing an industry driven self regulatory framework.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT Grain Trade Australia aims to create an operating environment for the commercial grain industry that is efficient, effective and transparent. This would not have been possible without the dedication, time and effort of the people and associations who founded NACMA back in 1991. Volunteer participation has been vital to the ongoing development of the grains industry, and the Australian grains industry owes a collective thanks to all those who have contributed along the way. Thanks to our past and current members, volunteers, board, employees and affiliated associations.
