Domaine Comte Senard Powerful 2009 Corton Grand Crus “One of the Great Domaines of Burgundy” Clive Coates. The Domaine Comte Senard is run by Lorraine Senard and her father Philippe. The Domaine is famous for extensive vineyard holding in the Cote de Beaune with the highlight being a broad, and interesting, selection of Corton Grand Cru Red. The holdings include Clos du Roi and Bressandes plus a most unusual and rare Red Corton produced from with in the Charlemagne area and the monopole Clos des Meix. The 2009 red vintage in the Cote de Beaune has been described as “potentially great” by Tanzer with Aloxe Corton being singled out as one of the highest performing communes. Upon tasting these wines it is easy to see why. Corton rouge has a reputation for being firm and dry and requiring many years in the cellar to resolve the tannins. In 2009 the wines still have their firm tannin backbone but on top of that they also have delicious, fresh fruit of the vintage. It is an attractive combination that provides a surprising about of immediate pleasure with the traditional ability to age long and gracefully. I tasted through the full range of 2009 wines which had been recently bottled. I was seriously impressed by the Clos du Roi and Bressandes which Grand Millesime will feature. We also offer the three other Corton Grand Cru which provide some interesting insights into the terroir of the different vineyards.
7 May 2011 - Burghound Tasting Notes have been added to each wine. Some fine reviews! Four of the five wines are on Burghound’s Sweet Spot List! A great hit rate! Why not try one of our 5-bottle tasting packs and experience them for yourself?
2009 Corton Clos de Meix Grand Cru Usual Price $195.00 Pre-Arrival Price $179.00 A monopole of Comte Senard. Clos de Meix is 1.64 hectares in size and produces both red and white grapes. Much of the plantings date to the period of World War II with younger additions in 1987 and 1997. Deep red cherry fruit with some sauvage and flowers. Burghound often sees violets in this cuvee. Not a huge Corton but a very expressive one. Burghound: A floral but intensely earthy and overtly sauvage nose of ripe red and dark berry fruit aromas marries into rich, full-bodied and broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent volume as well as impressive length on the mouth coating if mildly rustic finish. This should amply reward longer-term cellaring. A Sweet Spot Wine Drink: 2021+ Score: 92 Points
2009 Corton Paulands Grand Cru Usual Price $195.00 Pre-Arrival Price $179.00 Senard’s holding measures 0.83 ha with vines planted in 1947 and 2003. They are the largest landowner in this small appellation. Deep red fruit with more oak and spice on the nose. Smoke and charcouterie with more earth. Lively on the palate. Burghound: Almost invisible wood sets off a distinctly ripe red berry liqueur-like nose liberally laced with warm earth nuances that continue to characterize the generous and quite fleshy big-bodied flavors that are seductively textured, all wrapped in a robust and powerful if slightly rustic finish. I quite like this though the prominent tannins will require at least 15 years to fully resolve. A Sweet Spot Wine Drink: 2024+ Score: 92 Points
2009 Corton en Charlemagne Grand Cru Usual Price $195.00 Pre-Arrival Price $179.00 From a small parcel of pinot noir vines located within the Charlemagne white vineyard. Rounder nose with medium weight red fruit. More textural in the mouth with a line of minerality. A rare wine - great for options competitions! Burghound: Discreet but not invisible wood frames very ripe black cherry liqueur and warm earth hints that introduce rich, full-bodied and intense flavors that possess moderate austerity on the otherwise long finish. Like the Valozières (Premier Cru), if this adds depth with bottle age, this could prove to be better than my early score suggests.. Drink: 2024+ Score: 90 Points
2009 Corton Bressandes Grand Cru Usual Price $219.00 Pre-Arrival Price $195.00 Located mid slope at the northern end of the commune, Bressandes is a favourite of Corton drinkers as it combines the power with elegance and aromatics. Senard’s holding is 0.63 ha planted in 1943, 1965 and 2002. A big step up here. Ripe red berries mingle with mineral and spice. Very aromatic. In the mouth the wine is texturally superior with subtle oak notes and very fine tannins. Powerful yet fine. A long and racy finish. An excellent Corton and highly recommended. Burghound: A markedly ripe yet attractively elegant nose displays notes of pure and seductive red currant, plum, menthol and stone hints, the latter of which also suffuses the firm, intense and full-bodied flavors that evidence a taut muscularity on the energetic, mouth coating, dusty and strikingly long finish. This is finer than the Clos du Roi but not as complex. A qualitative choice but both are terrific. A Sweet Spot Wine Drink: 2024+ Score: 93 Points
2009 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru Usual Price $219.00 Pre-Arrival Price $195.00 The best site in Corton at the top of the slope. Senard owns 0.63 ha planted in 1945 and 2001. More of everything in this wine. Darker blue-black-red fruit combined with more power and structure. Notes of earth, animal, minerals. Extremely long palate with chewy fine tannins. A serious wine ideally to be cellared for a decade or more. Burghound: A conspicuously ripe, serious, earthy and mildly animale nose features notes of red and blue pinot fruit compote that complements the equally serious, rich, full and overtly tannic flavors that possess a manifestly chewy mouth feel on the hugely persistent finish. This is perhaps a bit riper than a classic Clos du Roi but otherwise, this is text book. Note well that this will be suitable only for the very patient. A Sweet Spot Wine Drink: 2029+ Score: 93 Points
Mixed 5-Bottle Tasting Pack Usual Price $1,023.00 Pre-Arrival Price $925.00 One bottle of each of the five Corton Grand Crus above. The ideal way to experience the wines of Comte Senard and the varying terroirs of Corton.
