«ODYSSEYS» NEW PERIODIC EXHIBITION

EXHIBITIONS

☞ Exhibition

The new exhibition of the National Archaeological Museum “Odysseys” is the main commemorative event on the occasion of the 150th anniversary since the foundation of the Museum. It attempts to give an account of the adventurous journey of man through time considered from an abstract and symbolic perspective that draws its inspiration from the Homeric Odyssey. Without reciting the mythological epic of Homer the

exhibition is inspired by the archetypal character of Odysseus and recounts through the emblematic, as well as the lesser-known ancient works of the National Archaeological Museum, the long chronicle of the beleaguered man, his incessant endeavour to tame his environment, conquer new places, broaden his horizons, establish well-governed societies and fight against the perishable nature of his existence with the aid of love and creative act.

PERFORMANCES AMYNTAS by George Mormoris ☞ Theater

Amyntas premiered at the Athens

Festival in 2016 and will be performed again at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, in loving memory of the late director and scholar, Spyros Evangelatos. Originally written by Torquato Tasso, Amyntas is set in a forest full of love-struck shepherds, sheep, virgin Amazons, wild beasts and legendary creatures such as satyrs, dragons and deities of love. Evangelatos used the Greek translation by George Mormoris, which he described as “exuding a freshness and a youthfulness and is noted for its charming humour.” The production seeks to convey a dreamlike sense, moving to and fro between the atmospherics of a benign nightmare and a poetic farce.

Stage turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the season 2016/17. It was praised by the audience in 10 sold out performances as well as by the critics. Dimitris Maramis wrote a particularly melodic musical composition, based on Kornaros’ masterpiece, retaining the Cretan dialect and the verse of fifteen syllables. With influences from the Cretan musical tradition, jazz and the blues, as well as Hadjidakis’ music, the composer created a new melodic universe for the thousands of verses of Erotokritos.

Now a stranger, blind and in rags, he seeks hospitality after ten years of wandering. His time has come: he needs a final resting place. His sole supporter is his daughter/sister Antigone. Following a series of negotiations, he is allowed to reside in the “borders,” in a liminal space across civilizations, between life and death, law and lawlessness. Through

his encounters with Theseus, Creon, his youngest daughter/sister, Ismene, and his son/brother, Polynices he re-examines his life and contemplates the absurdity of the human condition. Stavros Tsakiris’ production adopts the style of narrative theatre. The cast will narrate a “parable” to the audience on a stage that is virtually empty save for a few objects. The characters are conceived as apparitions of the dying Oedipus.

operatic masterpiece with a Greek storyline as its first work; none other than Richard Strauss’ Elektra based on the tragedy of that name by Sophocles. Elektra has been dubbed one of the most important, yet also most demanding, 20th century operas. Staging the work is a major challenge for the Greek National Opera and its musical ensembles because the particularly complex score, in which Strauss pushes expressionistic delivery to the limits, almost touching upon tonality, requires around 110 musical instruments. Strauss’ Elektra has never before been performed by the Greek National Opera. The symbolism operates on many levels, since a work with a Greek theme has

been chosen, inspired by the myth of the house of Atreus, which will play a major role in the Greek National Opera’s overall program for the next 3 years, but is also a 20th century work since one of the Greek National Opera’s intentions is to demonstrate that opera, the lyric art, and musical theater did not come to an end in the 19th century. The production also marks the first collaboration between the Greek National Opera and world class Greek contralto Agnes Baltsa, who will star as Klytemnestra in all performances, which will be directed by the international Greek director and set designer Yannis Kokkos, and conducted by the internationally acclaimed conductor Vassilis Christopoulos. The acclaimed Wagnerian soprano Iréne Theorin stars in the title role. Theorin has performed the role in Saltsburg, Paris, Munich, and, after Athens, will be performing in Stockholm. Renowned Greek baritone Dimitris Tiliakos will be debuting in the role of Orestis.

What to do in Athens – beyond visiting the Acropolis Unmissable moments and experiences to have in Athens, Greece Ancient and modern Athens co-exist in perfect harmony with each other. Wherever you stand in the Greek capital, the Parthenon will always be in view as a constant reminder of the city’s history and where it all began over two millennia ago. So after you’ve climbed to the top of the Acropolis and marvelled at this remarkable temple,

built to honour the patron goddess Athena, filled your camera with the sprawling view of Athens, as she stretches out to the port of Piraeus, what’s next? Beyond the wellknown cultural attractions, here’s a round up of what to do in Athens, that will get you in touch with the modern side of the city.

Enjoy the Greek way of life

When considering what to do in Athens, getting a taste of Greek culture, which is full of life and music, should be on the top of your

W hat to d o in A thens

list. Athenian summer nights are best enjoyed outdoors and you can see live Greek dancing beneath the glow of the Acropolis (until 25th September) or one of the scheduled performances from the annual Athens and Epidaurus Festival. Movie screens move to the open air too from May to October and Cine Paris in Plaka is one of the oldest in town bringing out the golden oldies, but it’s less about the movie and more about the killer views of the Acropolis

in the background. Tuck into meze with live Greek music along the steep walkway of Mnisikleous or Erechtheos in Plaka. Live rebetika music or the ‘Greek blues’ is currently having a resurgence in the capital. A short taxi ride to the old gasworks precinct of Gazi will get you to Gazarte, who schedule weekly musical acts (from all over the world) on their rooftop stage. Keep your nights going until the wee hours of the morning down the lengthy road of Kolokotroni in central Athens, lined with trendy bars with imaginative names such as Barley Cargo, Booze Cooperativa and The Bank Job.

Eat like a local

Many affectionately refer to Athens as the largest village in Greece and when it comes to food that is very true.

W hat to d o in A thens

Freshly baked bread is always within reach and the famous Koulouri is how most like to kick off the day. Follow the aromas of home cooked “paradosiakos” food in non-touristy tavernas that are scattered all around town including Diporto where there is no menu and only a handful of dishes served every day. It doesn’t get any more rustic, authentic or delicious. This very mercantile part of Athens is where the city’s buzzing

2

central market is located with home grown organic produce that is bursting with colour and local flavours. A short walk to Athinas St is the coffee micro-roastery Mokka, where you can enjoy a shot of Greek coffee, prepared the old fashion way. Closer to the Acropolis in the very picturesque area of Thissio, you can devour a kilo of lamb chops at To Steki tou Ilia and then walk it all off in the surrounding pedestrianised walkway with market stalls along Agias Asomaton.

There are many hills to climb in Athens and not all lead to the Acropolis, one in particular frames the Parthenon perfectly against the background of the Aegean Sea.

4

Jump on the funicular or railway carriage that leads to the top of Lycabettus Hill and cold beer will be waiting for you as the unofficial street vendors (who have fought tooth and nail to be there) await to greet you. Otherwise, bring your own picnic and grab a spot for the spectacular sunset.

For something a little different

Take a break from all the splendid ancient antiquities and stop by the Hellenic Motor Museum with a private collection of more than 110 cars from the late 1800’s until the end of the last century.

For outdoorsy pursuits, take the cable car to the top of Mount Parnitha (about 30 kilometres northwest from the centre) and hike this glorious mountain, which is the

You can explore Mount Parnitha another way and try your luck at the Regency Casino inside the Mont Parnes Hotel that was built in the 60s and perched up high above the mountain. It’s an impressive example of modern Athenian architecture. (Observe the dress code and bring your passport to enter).
