Summer greetings from your Mayor I extend best wishes to all residents for an enjoyable and safe summer, whether you are travelling afar or enjoying time at home. It certainly is another busy summer for the Town of Grande Cache as we move forward with our beautification and revitalization plans. It is exciting and gratifying to see the new signage, playground equipment and tree and shrub plantings in the downtown area, parks and green spaces. We know this contributes to the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike, and I extend sincere appreciation to our Public Works staff and all employees for their hard work. We are proud to be able to ‘show off’ and share these many improvements as we host the Communities in Bloom judges once again this summer. Thanks to all residents for your efforts in keeping our community clean and beautiful. We are again looking forward to Death Race and Deathfest 2008, and all the excitement that they generate in our community. As well, we are proud to host Federal Industry Minister, Jim Prentice, and Member of Parliament, Rob Merrifield on August 6. For Minister Prentice, this is a ‘welcome home’ as he was a resident of Grande Cache in the early years! A planning process and timeline has been established regarding the multiplex facility, and I encourage all residents to take advantage of opportunities to gain information and provide input. This is a major initiative for Council and our community, and it is essential that you play a role and make your feelings known. We look forward to another ‘Open House’ for residents in September and hope to see you there. It is evident that a number of tourists are visiting our area again this year. We welcome them and recognize the positive impact to the local economy. It is gratifying to hear their comments about the warm welcome they receive in our Visitor Centre, shops, restaurants and businesses. That’s Grande Cache hospitality and the recognition that we are all ambassadors!

Happy Summer to Everyone!

Communities in Bloom The Communities in Bloom Judges visited Grande Cache July 25th, evaluating the community based on 8 different criteria. They began their tour at the Tourism & Interpretive Centre, then explored around town all morning to see the hard work the Town, local businesses, groups and organizations, and local residents have put into our beautiful town. The tour ended at the Grand Opening of Mt. Hamel Park where they participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Louis Krewusik. The judges were thoroughly impressed with the town’s ambitious and aggressive beautification efforts, as well as our progressive vision for the future. Results will be announced at the Provincial Award Ceremony in Wainwright in September. A Communities in Bloom display is located upstairs at the Tourism & Interpretive Centre, including photos, a scrapbook, and a copy of our Community Profile Book. Make sure To stop by and see all the hard work our community has done over the past couple of years!

2008 Beautification & Revitalization Plans ‌ a great start to 2008! The Town has been busy this spring and summer continuing with our Beautification & Revitalization plans for the community. The trees downtown are in full bloom and add color and life to the commercial area. The planters that were built last fall are being filled with shrubs and plants, which will just add more charm to our downtown. Shrubs and plants have also been planted in Central Park this summer, and along the highway with our new directional signage. In April, we held another public open house to go over the new design ideas for Grande Square, located downtown. A survey was collected regarding the designs, and 77% of respondents said that a public square is important to them, and 88% felt that the proposed Grande Square would improve our community.

Final design plans are in the works!

EnCana Water Park Thanks to a generous donation from EnCana Corporation, construction on the EnCana Water Park will start this summer. This park will include a water feature, surrounding an outdoor fire pit area, and public washrooms will be added to the site. The most exciting feature will be a spray pad, including a magic touch fire hydrant, water jelly, thunder domes, rising flag, firefighter cannons, and cylinder spray! To accommodate our winter season, this entire area will be developed so that it can be flooded for an outdoor skating surface. *Spray Pad Concept - actual design may differ

We have heard of a number of local businesses with plans to revitalize their storefronts this summer. We are excited for these projects, and support their efforts! We encourage all businesses to revitalize your areas to follow our new beautification theme. Don’t forget, we are still offering the Interest Free Beautification Loan through Community Futures to help you in your revitalization planning. Check out the town’s website for more information, or call 780-827-3362 ext. 27 A special acknowledgment to all the local businesses that have planted and displayed bright and cheery flowers this summer. They look great! Also – a big thank you to Sorority for planting the flowers in the Rocky the Ram bed. These contributions towards our community’s beautification efforts are not over looked and are greatly appreciated. Strategic Planning & Development

… reports are complete and available online Last fall, the Town of Grande Cache worked with a consulting firm to develop a community economic gap assessment to identify gaps within the local economy. The outcome was to provide recommendations on how to address these gaps, as well as develop business retention and expansion strategies. In November, a number of local businesses were surveyed as part of the business retention & expansion review. 107 surveys were successfully completed. A Strategic Planning Workshop was also held in November with a number of key stakeholders from the community. The result of this work has led to the completion of an economic development strategy to help proceed with community development initiatives. Two reports were received at the end of the project. The main document, an Economic Development Report, identifies four business and retention strategies for the Town: Human Capital – Improving Grande Cache’s Labour Availability & Productivity Physical Capital – Improving GC’s Physical Environment Enhancing GC’s Marketability to Tourists, New Business, and Developers Enhancing GC’s Existing Firms through Technical and Development Assistance The second document was a Four Season Tourism & Resort Development Preliminary Business Case

These documents are both available for download online under the “Doing Business” section. For more information on this project, contact: Tara Wignes Manager of Economic Development & Tourism Phone: 780-827-3362 ext.27 email: tara.wignes@grandecache.ca

Grande Cache Municipal Campground The campground opened May long weekend for this year’s season. This will be an exciting year for the campground, as a number of new changes and upgrades have been initiated. Heather Mackenzie is the new Campground Supervisor this year, and has a great group of office and maintenance staff.

… exciting new play and stay packages!

Of the 77 sites, 10 sites have been allocated for long-term seasonal stays, 30 sites reserved for reservations only, while the remaining sites are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Visit the Town’s Web Site for more information, or call the campground at 780-827-2404. This year, we have partnered with local tourism operators to offer “Stay & Play” Packages to not only encourage people to stay at our facility, but to help extend their visit. The packages vary with the length of stay, offering discounts on white water rafting, golfing, and interpretive hiking. A new day-use area will be developed this summer to accommodate large groups wishing to access an area for group picnics or gatherings. This area is adjacent to the cook shelter, and will have a group fire pit and picnic tables. In August, a playground will also be added to this area, providing a space for youth to enjoy while on family vacation. Another addition to the Campground this spring was wireless internet.

The campground will be Open until mid October

Recreation, Culture & Heritage For years the community of Grande Cache has been calling for a new or renovated recreation centre. In the past this has lead to some frustration amongst the community due to design and planning processes that have not resulted in a new facility despite past promises. In 2006 Council developed their 20/20 Strategic Sustainability Plan. Contained in that plan was the vision to move forward with the construction of a new multiplex facility. In 2007 Council passed a resolution that endorsed the multiplex as a top priority for their current mandate. Shortly after Council budgeted for the retention of an architectural firm to formally begin the concept and design phase of this major capital project. Council hired Ken Hutchinson Architects to begin the design phase which currently is well under way. In order to gather as much input into the process as possible a citizen’s advisory committee was formed to work with the architects as they move toward a final design concept. Many of you have noticed that surveys have been circulated and we would encourage you to become direct participants in this project by providing your input and thoughts on the recreational needs of the community and the specific facilities that should be a priority in the new facility. If you have not received a survey they are available at the Town Office, the Recreation Centre and available for download online. As we move through the summer Council is expecting a formal report from the Architects and by mid September will be hosting a community open house to unveil the concept design, however, this is the easy part. From this point detailed design drawings and blueprints will be developed and the tender process will begin. It is Council’s plan to move to construction by spring of 2009, pending the funding required to complete either all or components of the project. Depending on the final cost of the project and our ability to raise the money required will depend on how quickly we will complete construction. The first construction priority will be the aquatic component followed by other features of the centre as outlined in the design. Council challenges every member of our community to become engaged in this process as it will be the first major capital project in several decades and will serve our community for decades to come. Your involvement will directly impact our future as a community. Join us in this exciting journey! For more information on this project visit our web site or contact: Duane Didow Manager of Recreation, Culture and Heritage Phone: 780-827-2446 email: duane.didow@grandecache.ca

Recreation Programs and Events The Programs & Events Department has had an exciting and busy spring. We have had a lot of fun with our new initiatives like the Girls in Motion program and old stand by events like the Senior’s Week Barbeque. Unfortunately in February Linda Gray, our Fitness Instructor, changed careers. We wish Linda the best in her future endeavors! Other exciting changes in the department include adding Travis Dukelow, Youth Coordinator to our department and welcoming the Youth Programmer Summer Student Gwen Carson. Travis and Gwen have been busily planning and running their summer activities which have a little bit of something that will appeal to all youth. In February the Town of Grande Cache, thanks to EnCana were able to host the Battle of the Borders Fundraising Hockey Game. This event was hugely supported by the community and resulted in a donation of $10,500 from EnCana to be used towards youth activities. Thanks to this generous donation all of this summers youth activities will only cost $5 to participate in! Some of these great activities include video dances, camping trips, white water rafting and paintball. THANK YOU EnCana!!! Our kid’s summer camp last year proved to be so successful that we have been able to add more spots and great activities. In this beautiful region that we live we are able to give day camper’s a taste of a lot of the unique activities that Grande Cache has to offer. This year in addition to white water rafting, horse back riding and hiking we were able to bring in a fantastic artist, Cherrice Bermel, from Hinton who will work with campers to hand build clay masks during super hero week. We have also been lucky enough to book Rapid Fire Theatre for Improv’ theatre workshops for campers during the second week of August. But don’t despair if you are too old for camp! We have also set up times so you to can participate in the Clay and Improv’ workshops this summer. Don’t miss the opportunity to try these great activities. The Town of Grande Cache has also had a wonderful opportunity to host a Discover-e Science Camp. This satellite camp, put on by the University of Alberta will be held at the Recreation Centre and is completely free of cost thanks to the generosity of a funder and Conoco Phillips. This camp is for kids in Grades 1-6. The Farmer’s Market has been slowly building towards success. We are ecstatic to have confirmed Ridge Valley Farms, who will be supplying chickens, eggs and fresh produce at the market, in addition to Mualla’s Turkish delights and Lucille’s fresh baked bread, buns and assorted goodies. Quilts, dream-catchers, handmade jewelry and much more are also available so be sure to stop by on the Recreation Centre Lobby on the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of each month until October. Our movie nights have also been a great success, so we plan to continue them this summer. Please check the website for upcoming movie titles, dates and locations. With the newness of the department we have been testing the waters with new programs catering to a variety of age groups and tastes. Hopefully, you have found something to fit your style. We always welcome ideas and suggestions from the community, so if you’ve got a great idea please call us at the Recreation Centre we would love to hear from you! Fall Water Classes There is no place like the pool! Easy on your joints, fun and full of opportunity to get in shape. Aquatic exercise can achieve many benefits such as enhancing cardiovascular fitness, improving muscular endurance and overall strength and reducing muscle, bone and joint injuries. Water may be relaxing, but it is also one big resistance tool – our muscles are always working against resistance in the water. So come out and give it a try. Interested in a deep water class? Watch for new classes in the winter session.

Public Works Department

‌ an integral role

The Public Works team is responsible for maintaining Grande Cache’s roads, Water & sewer lines, snow removal, sanding, garbage collection and the animal pound Like everyone else around town, the Public Works staff is looking forward to a nice warm summer. So to the staff and the public please enjoy as we all deserve it! There have been many projects around the community which have kept Public Works busy. In particular a retaining wall collapsed between condo # 1 and the bordering house on 97 avenue. The Public Works staff did a great job getting the retaining wall rebuilt so it is safe and secure. A big thank you to the bordering house for having patience as Public Works waited on materials needed to complete the project. If you have driven around town you will have noticed that all our new way-finding signs are now in place along the highway corridor. To add the aesthetic of the signs the rock planter box bases are now full of great shrubs and plants. Our community is blooming and this is a great addition to our beautification and revitalization efforts! The staff were very happy to start cutting grass this summer after a long white winter and slow cold spring. To keep our community green Public Works has not been treating dandelions with any chemical herbicide. We are looking for a green solution but have yet to find an effective alternative to combat the dandelion bloom. Public Works has also been hard at work keeping everything running smoothly at the Sewer Treatment and Filter plant. Select members of the Public Works department have just completed filtration courses which will help them run the plant more efficiently and effectively.
